Career Guidance & Progression Career Guidance Until now it has often been difficult for potential students, existing employees and company managers to obtain detailed career guidance for the superyacht industry. WSA’s website now contains newly developed career progression charts for industry personnel, covering: Yacht Deck Unlimited Deck (experienced seafarer and officer cadet routes) Yacht Engineering Unlimited Engineering (experienced seafarer and officer cadet routes) Interior & Hospitality Progression Charts Maritime Education & Training STCW 2010 Amendments Major revisions to the STCW Convention and its associated Code were adopted by IMO in Manila in June 2010 to ensure that the necessary global standards will be in place to train and certify seafarers to operate technologically advanced vessels The amendments entered into force on 1 January 2012, bringing the Convention and Code up to date and enabling them to address issues that are anticipated to emerge in the foreseeable future STCW 2010 Amendments Amongst the amendments adopted, there are a number of important changes to each chapter of the Convention and Code, including new training requirements relating to: Modern technology (e.g. ECDIS) Leadership, management and teamwork Security, including piracy awareness Marine environment awareness Certification for dedicated Electro-technical officers and ratings Certification for able seafarers Operation of Dynamic Positioning Systems Prevention of fraudulent practices associated with Certs. of Competency Key STCW 2010 Dates 1st Jan 2012 – start of transition period. 1st July 2013 – new courses available 1st Jan 2014 – grandfather security end 1st Jan 2017 – final implementation Quality Management Our dedicated Quality Management team successfully manages an extensive range of related events each year, including: Internal programme validations, revalidations and audit Monitoring/approval visits by UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency Audit of ISO 9001 QMS by LRQA Inspection of academic course provision by QAA Inspection of professional short course provision by OFSTED Professional accreditation visits (e.g. IMarEST) EMSA Audit An audit of our overall course provision was carried out by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in October 2011 Feedback received on our performance from the EMSA audit team was very complimentary: “high overall standards found across the Academy” “few of the other institutions audited by EMSA across Europe and other regions of the world have demonstrated such a comprehensive approach to quality management, course design/development and continuous improvement” OFSTED Audit An audit of our professional short course provision was carried out in December 2011 by OFSTED, the UK government’s auditing body for education and skills. The formal report was published on 18 January 2012 and key findings were as follows: Overall effectiveness of provision: Grade 1 (Outstanding) Outcomes for learners: Grade 1 (Outstanding) Quality of provision: Grade 1 (Outstanding) Interior & Hospitality Interior & Hospitality WSA and the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) are setting the standard for interior training, providing the tools and recognised certification for career progression within the interior department. All of our courses are accredited through the PYA's GUEST programme (Guidelines for Unified Excellence in Service Training). Yacht Registration Yacht Registration Owners have the ultimate choice of where to register their vessel, with a variety of options open to them depending on personal, technical and financial preferences. In the past yachts were usually registered with the owner’s nation state but 'flags of convenience' are often used today for financial, tax or administration purposes.
