A simple blood sample is taken from the mother from 10 weeks and sent off for analysis. The result of the blood test (Harmony), is accurate to more than 99% in Downs syndrome, 98% of Edwards syndrome and 80% of Patau’s syndrome and the results are known within 14 days. This is great news for couples because it eliminates the risk of miscarriage which is a possibility when invasive tests are carried out. This is now one of the most accurate non-invasive tests to predict the chance of a chromosomal abnormality in a pregnancy. The process is very simple; •An ultrasound scan is carried out •Blood is taken from the vein in the woman’s arm (like any other blood test) •The tubes are immediately packaged and sent for analysis •The result is usually available within 12-14 days The test is currently available at Pinehill for £500 (this includes the initial Consultation with Mr Salvesen) Consultants at Pinehill Consultant Mr Frank Conroy Plastic Surgeon Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons (IAPS).
