Thank you all—musicians, SFJAZZ

Just 3 blocks away!

SFJAZZ the opportunity to joyously
celebrate the milestone of our 5th
Season in the SFJAZZ Center.
This is a proud moment for us all—a time to reflect on what has been achieved, but
more importantly to look forward and build on what has been accomplished.
As we neared the opening of the Center in January 2013, I was often asked how it
would feel to see SFJAZZ’s dream of a dedicated building for jazz finally come to life:
“You must be very proud.” The reply was, “Yes it will be a great accomplishment for
us, but I can give you a better answer in 3 to 5 years.” The creation of the SFJAZZ
Center was a risk—was it possible to create a cultural institution, for jazz, here in San

Francisco? It’s now time for the answer, and it looks like the gamble has worked out
and you, our audience, have made it work: SFJAZZ membership has quadrupled since
we broke ground—from 3,000 to over 12,000 members; 90% of all shows have sold
out; 35,000 students have been reached through our education programs; and over
500,000 tickets have been sold.
We all have built a community center that has been generously received by San
Franciscans and jazz fans, and we don’t intend to stand still. Our values of openness,
looking forward, presenting the highest levels of art, and community building are
the foundation for our growth. We will be announcing a number of new initiatives
in the coming 12 months. Following are three examples: a partnership with the
San Francisco Conservatory of Music, who is launching a jazz studies program for
the 2017-18 academic year with the SFJAZZ Collective as the core faculty; radio
broadcasts of “Live from the SFJAZZ Center” starting this fall on the French public
radio station France Musique, with more stations to follow; and we just became an

Season 5! Time certainly flies! Many of you

teachers we work with in the course of nine months. With new artists coming into the Center
each week from near and far—literally from around the world—we have only a brief chance
to experience their interpretation of the music we all call jazz. SFJAZZ doesn’t have a single
orchestra for you to come to know, but rather each week, week by week, we hope you
engage with the best musicians and music presented anywhere.

Jazz, we believe, is constantly evolving, and we make every effort to not only present
a wide swath of music on our stages but to also bring jazz into the community through
classroom instruction, outreach, hands on master classes, a community band, and both
a High School All-Stars Big Band and Combo. You can find information on all of these
programs in this book.
The SFJAZZ experience is not only what you come to see, but it’s also how you participate.
We have improved our email communications and hope you have added

“It’s a great thrill and honor to be an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic
Director. The number one tradition of the jazz community is
to create—always to create new, fresh, wonderful music.”
— CHRISTIAN McBRIDE
T
he SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director program was established to give today’s most innovative and influential
musicians the chance to curate exclusive programming at the SFJAZZ Center, often featuring unprecedented
collaborations between world–renowned artists. Every two years, SFJAZZ selects a new group of forward–thinking
musicians to participate in the program. Past SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Directors include Bill Frisell, Jason Moran,
Miguel Zenón, Regina Carter, John Santos, Esperanza Spalding, Terence Blanchard, Zakir Hussain, and Eric Harland.
Notable world premieres have included pianist Moran’s pairing of jazz and live skateboarding, guitarist Bill Frisell’s
adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved featuring actor Tim Robbins, drummer Harland’s
Voyager band paired with live video gamers, and an extensively revised presentation of trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s fully–staged
opera Champion: An Opera in Jazz.

At just 43, four–time GRAMMY winning bassist Christian
McBride is widely regarded as the standard-bearer for jazz
bassists in the 21st century. Among the more than 300 albums
he’s appeared on are sessions by many of the most illustrious
figures in jazz, including Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, and Pat
Metheny, while also collaborating with artists as diverse as Sting
and Questlove of The Roots. McBride has been the linchpin of
various all–star projects, such as the Five Peace Band with John
McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett and Vinnie Colaiuta,
as well as the 2015 GRAMMY–lauded Chick Corea Trio with
drummer Brian Blade. He’s led a procession of diverse groups
since the mid-90s, most recently his Christian McBride Big
Band, whose 2011 release The Good Feeling won that year’s
GRAMMY for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. He has also
found time to oversee jazz programming at Disney Hall and the
Hollywood Bowl, along with being the host of NPR’s Jazz Night
in America. As an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, McBride
brings a kaleidoscopic musical vision and a restless drive for
fresh avenues of expression.

VIJAY IYER4 F E B
9 –12
The brilliant and adventurous pianist and composer Vijay Iyer
is a musician who stretches the boundaries of jazz. He was the
recipient of the MacArthur Foundation’s “genius grant” in 2013
and the “quadruple crown” in DownBeat’s 2012 Critics Poll in
the categories of Jazz Artist of the Year, Group of the Year,
Pianist of the Year and Album of the Year. Iyer has collaborated
with the most creative figures in modern jazz, including Steve
Coleman, Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake, Ambrose Akinmusire,
and John Zorn, among others, and is a member of the visionary
collective Fieldwork. He has recorded 15 albums since his
debut in 1995, including the acclaimed sessions Historicity
(2009), Accelerando (2011), and Break Stuff (2014) featuring his
telepathic trio of bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus
Gilmore. Iyer’s role as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director
allows him to explore his creativity in various settings,
curating evenings devoted to challenging new music and
exciting collaborations.
MARY STALLINGS4 M AY
ROSANNE CASH4 M AY
4 –7
A supremely soulful jazz singer, the San Francisco native has
appeared alongside jazz greats including Cal Tjader, Dizzy
Gillespie and the Count Basie Orchestra over her stellar career.
With her supple sense of swing, blues–inflected phrasing,
and gift for empathic interpretation, it’s easy to see why The
New York Times declared her “perhaps the best jazz singer
alive today.” Following tours with Gillespie, Basie and Billy
Eckstine in the late 60s and early 70s, she effectively retired
from music, but made a triumphant return in the 1990s. She
has since made up for lost time, recording a dozen sessions for
Concord, MAXJAZZ and High Note. Stallings has a long history
with SFJAZZ, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at our
2011 Gala and performing the opening song during the historic
Opening Night concert in 2013. For her week as Resident
Artistic Director, Stallings presents music from Feelin’ Good, a
night devoted to Brazilian music, and collaborations in both an
intimate duo setting and with the SFJAZZ High School All–Stars.
More than a country music icon, Rosanne Cash
is America’s foremost musical woman of letters, who returns
after her triumphant series of concerts premiering the songs
from her latest Blue Note release, The River and The Thread. She
has landed nearly a dozen #1 country hit singles while earning
13 GRAMMY nominations, culminating in three GRAMMY wins
for The River & The Thread, which made “Best of Year” lists in
The New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Village Voice, and USA
Today. Leading publications including The Oxford-American
and New York Magazine have published her essays and fiction,
and she authored a volume of short stories, Bodies of Water,
as well as a fascinating memoir, Composed. For her week, Cash
presents a series of concerts in collaboration with fellow stars
Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris—a project that has only
occurred once before while Cash was an Artist-in-Residence at
the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
“I’m really excited to come back to the Bay
Area as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director.
I’m going to bring a lot of my friends and
colleagues, some fantastic musicians...
musically it will cover quite a range.”
“It truly is an honor to be a Resident Artistic
Director for SFJAZZ, an institution that has
done a great service for this art form. The
most wonderful level of art is being able to
share something very dear—my music.
I am excited to be able to share my musical
journey in such a wonderful place.”

SFJAZZ GALA 2017 HONORING ZAKIR HUSSAIN
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2017 • SFJAZZ CENTER
SFJAZZ honors Zakir Hussain, “one of the architects of modern
world music,” (NPR) with the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award.
Zakir Hussain is universally acknowledged as the world’s greatest living tabla virtuoso. As
a cultural ambassador and educator, he has carried the rhythmic sophistication of North
Indian classical music across genres and into collaborations such as Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road
Project and Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum, to legendary groups such as Remember Shakti
with John McLaughlin and Sangam with Charles Lloyd. In April of this year, President
Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama invited Zakir Hussain to perform as part
of International Jazz Day at the White House.

CONVERSATIONS
WITH CHRISTIAN
by
CHRISTIAN M c BRIDE AT SFJAZZ CENTER
WITH CHICK COREA AND BRIAN BLADE DURING SEASON FOUR
C
House, where President Obama “had his head bobbing to the
music, eyes closed, like a real jazz lover,” says McBride, 44, who
has emerged as an unofficial ambassador-at-large for the jazz
world, probably because he takes
such clear pleasure in the music.
hristian McBride once recorded an album of duets
with a batch of his favorite musicians. He called it
Conversations with Christian, which would make a good
title for his musical life.
He has five different bands and a
non-stop career as a sideman, and
when he performs, a lusty musical
conversation tends to break out
because his playing projects such
confidence and curiosity. He offers
an invitation to the other players:
“Surprise me!” The conversation
grows. And when he puts down his
bass and talks to the audience,
the stories keep coming: McBride
is one of the best raconteurs
in the business.
“
I’M ONLY A STEWARD FOR
OPENNESS AND CURIOSITY
AND INDEPENDENT THOUGHT.
I DON’T HOLD A TORCH
OR A FLAG UP FOR ANY
PARTICULAR STYLE OF JAZZ.
His speaking voice is rootsy and
resonant, much like the sound of
his bass. You’ve probably heard
that voice: McBride hosts shows
on SiriusXM satellite radio (The
Lowdown: Conversations with
Christian) and National Public
Radio (Jazz Night in America),
where he is a frequent contributor.
He is the new artistic director of
the Newport Jazz Festival, handpicked by founder George Wein to move the tradition forward.
He recently led a Smithsonian tribute to Ray Charles at the White

”
Debuting as a Resident Artistic
Director at SFJAZZ this fall,
McBride is careful not to make
too big a deal of his growing
presence. Yes, he gets described
as a steward for the tradition. But
the five-time GRAMMY-winner—
who can pin you to the wall with
his swing, and has played with
everyone from Freddie Hubbard
to James Brown and Sting—says,
“I’m only a steward for openness
and curiosity and independent
thought. I don’t hold a torch or a
flag up for any particular style of
jazz. I just would love for more of
the general listening public to be
curious enough to listen to things
that aren’t on the charts or on TV.”
He follows up the thought: “But
I never want to browbeat anyone
for not knowing jazz. The only
thing I can do is present jazz in a way that’s interesting or friendly
enough, so people will say, `Oh, what’s happening over here? I

The soul of jazz is in the joy of discovery and the spirit of
improvisation. So it’s only appropriate that bassist Christian
McBride’s ongoing electro-funk Situation project is a loose
assemblage of musicians including keyboardist Patrice Rushen,
saxophonist Ron Blake, and DJ Logic on turntables—a band who
came together by happenstance, but have developed a group
aesthetic that seems totally preordained.
This evening presents the West Coast debut of McBride’s
exciting new quartet called “New Jawn” in reference to that most
Philadelphian of indefinable words. Echoing the two horns/no
piano lineup of the classic Ornette Coleman quartet, New Jawn
is comprised of some of the most forward-thinking jazz artists
on today’s scene, including trumpeter Josh Evans, saxophonist
Marcus Strickland and drummer Nasheet Waits.

McBride has been the linchpin of various all-star projects, and
led his own groups in the studio and on tour since the mid-90s.
But until 2011’s The Good Feeling, McBride had never recorded
an album with his own big band. As the title implies, it’s a
swaggering, hard-swinging session featuring a cast of New
York’s best sidemen, winning the GRAMMY Award for Best Large
Ensemble Jazz Album in 2012.
The last night of McBride’s week as Resident Artistic Director is an
intimate evening of duets and conversation between the bassist
and three-time GRAMMY-winning singer Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Since she first gained recognition with the great Thad Jones/

explorer, collaborating with masters musicians of Mali, embracing
the cabaret of Kurt Weill, and delving into the funky hard bop of
Horace Silver.

SEP 22: A Christian McBride Situation is what he
Bruce De Benedictis
Jeremiah’s Pick Coffee
calls his “electric, experimental, DJ, house kind of” band. It
came together at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2007, when
members of his scheduled group—a straight-ahead, acoustic
unit—had to cancel. “Uh-oh,” said his manager. “Looks like
we have a Christian McBride situation.” No problem. The
bassist grabbed some of his friends who also happened to
be at the festival—keyboardist Patrice Rushen, turntablist
DJ Logic—and created a new group. Those same players
(with McBride on electric bass) will perform in San Francisco
along with other “Situation” regulars: saxophonist Ron Blake,
vocalist Alyson Williams and turntablist Jahi Sundance.

of McBride’s newest band, a piano-less, acoustic quartet.
After spending years alongside pianists (Chick Corea,
Geoffrey Keezer, Peter Martin, Christian Sands) and a
guitarist or two (e.g. Pat Metheny), the bassist decided it
“would be nice to play in a group where there are no chords,
where I can be the only one responsible for the harmony.
With a group like that, you have so many possibilities.”
This one includes Marcus Strickland, one of the ascendant
saxophonists in jazz; drum genius Nasheet Waits; and young
trumpeter Josh Evans whose mentors, McBride notes,
include the great saxophonists Jackie McLean and Billy
Harper, as well as drummer Rashied Ali. (By the way, “Jawn”
is a noun from McBride’s hometown, Philadelphia. In the
lingo of most other cities, “jawn” becomes “joint.”)

members, it’s a mean machine. “If it were financially possible
to work with the big band all the time, that probably could
be my main group,” he says, “because it combines all of my
different loves into one unit: writing, arranging, playing. You
can do some small-group things inside the big band, and
then you have the entertainment factor. Now I know,” he
says with a chuckle, “that jazz musicians have been trained
to frown upon the idea that they’re entertainers. To have
people outside the family enjoy your music must mean
you’re doing something artistically undignified, or not with
integrity.” He laughs at the notion, and suggests you get
ready for a good time. Danny Ray, James Brown’s master of
ceremonies for 45 years, will be the emcee.
SEP 25: Duets with Dee Dee Bridgewater McBride
says the singer is his “partner in crime.” Come hear a couple
of virtuosos who are liable to do anything—get free, or get
down in the groove. For a taste of what’s in the offing, try out
their recording of the Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing.” (It’s on
McBride’s Conversations with Christian CD, from 2011.)
As we were saying: Four shows, four variations on Christian
McBride. What does it add up to?
38
McBride doesn’t hesitate: “There’s a lot of great music out
there, a lot of great inflections within the same language—
and I’d like to learn ’em all.” ■

BOBBY IN THE DRESSING ROOM
NAMED IN HIS HONOR
REMEMBERING BOBBY HUTCHERSON
T
he most accomplished vibraphonist and composer to
emerge in the latter half of the 20th Century, Bobby
redefined the role of the instrument in modern jazz,
bringing new levels of technical mastery and harmonic
sophistication that had never been heard before. Inspired by
Modern Jazz Quartet vibraphonist Milt Jackson, he made his
recording debut with pianist Les McCann in 1961 and began an
unprecedented 24-year association with the Blue Note label on
saxophonist Jackie McLean’s 1964 landmark One Step Beyond.
From the crucial harmonic structures and pointillistic stabs of
color on Eric Dolphy’s avant-garde masterpiece Out To Lunch
and his soloistic fire on Joe Henderson’s epochal Mode For
Joe to the soul jazz grease of Donald Byrd’s Ethiopian Knights,
Bobby made indelible contributions to over 250 albums during
his Blue Note tenure, and led 23 recordings that introduced the
world to his indelible compositions “Little B’s Poem,” “Bouquet,”
“Components,” “Montara,” and others.
40
Since moving to the Bay Area in the late 1960s, he developed
fruitful musical partnerships with both saxophonist Harold Land
and pianist McCoy Tyner, and released a string of sessions on the
Blue Note, Columbia, Landmark, and Kind of Blue labels. In 2010,
the National Endowment for the Arts named Bobby an NEA Jazz
Master for his lifetime of contributions to the art form —the highest
honor the U.S. bestows on jazz musicians. A great friend and an
artist with a long history performing on SFJAZZ stages, beginning
with a performance at the very first Jazz in the City Festival in
1983, Bobby was a founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective;
composing, arranging, and performing with the band from its
inception in 2004 through 2007. He was the honoree at the 2010
SFJAZZ Gala, was a featured speaker at the groundbreaking event
for the SFJAZZ Center in 2012, and performed during the historic
Opening Night concert in January, 2013.
He is survived by wife Rosemary, sons Teddy and Barry, and
grandchildren Ruby Rose and Bobby James. Bobby will be greatly
missed. We are honored to have known him. ■
