ALL IS A BUSY TIME in Chester County. School
begins, summer vacations end and the fall
fundraising season starts in full force in
September. This fall, one event promises to stand
out from the crowd. On Friday, November 22,
the Chester County Historical Society (CCHS)
will host its autumn benefit with the theme, “An
Evening of Elegance and Fashion.”
Added excitement for the evening will come from
a special arrangement with local students studying
fashion design. Working closely with CCHS’s
Profiles: Chester County Clothing
of the 1800s
Tying the event to CCHS’s mission through
highlighting history and collections was a natural
fit. The event will showcase beautiful, original
clothing from the 19th century as it coincides
with the opening of the exhibit, “Profiles: Chester
County Clothing of the 1800s,” sponsored by the
Coby Foundation, Ltd.
Meet the Benefit’s Chairperson
Artist and interior design consultant Rebecca
Lukens, who is also my wife, understands firsthand
the importance of leadership and community
involvement for success. She believes in CCHS’s
mission and stepped up to the plate to take on
the important role of chairperson of the autumn
benefit. “This is a great opportunity to get involved
in a strong organization that plays a key role in the
community,” says Rebecca.
Under Rebecca’s direction, the evening will hold
several unique features and exciting opportunities.
One auction item is the opportunity for you and
three friends to be immortalized in a painting
by Adrian Martinez. While dressed in period
costume, the winning bidder and accompanying
friends will enjoy a special tasting and wine pairing
at the Marshalton Inn. Martinez will capture the
moment in a painting, which will include historical
figures including Jeremiah Dixon, Charles Mason,
and Humphry Marshall along with the bidder’s
party. The painting will be featured in CCHS’s
2015 exhibition, “The Great and Strange of
Pennsylvania.” The winning bidder will also receive
two signed prints of the painting.

Supported by the Coby Foundation, Ltd., this is the
first full exhibition of nineteenth-century Chester
County clothing. Stories of the clothes and the
people who wore them will be told in CCHS’s largest
gallery space. The exhibit will include one-of-a-kind
examples of CCHS’s nationally recognized clothing
collection, featuring outerwear worn by women,
men and children that will show the evolution of
clothing in the nineteenth century.

The event will also feature a variety of unique
auction items, great food by CCHS’s exclusive
caterer Jimmy Duffy’s, cocktails and festive music.
Bringing these components together will create a
memorable night for people attending the event
and supporting the organization’s mission to
preserve and share the remarkable story of Chester
County and its people.

and Collections Manager Heather Hansen, select
students will create modern fashion pieces that
draw inspiration from the historical clothing
collection on exhibit. CCHS will showcase those
modern creations throughout the evening on
November 22.
