1 2 3 Volume 30 No. 9 June 2016 News from the Health Aspen X2 Access Office Please direct questions concerning your computer access (log-in problems) on Aspen X2 to: [email protected] The Health Office will be accepting student physicals throughout the summer. Avoid the beginning of the school year “paper rush” and send your student’s physical any time over the summer. Thank you and have a happy, safe summer. Lisa Koski, RN, BSN [email protected] Kari-Ann DeCapua, RN, BSN [email protected] Important Reminder Early Dismissal and Late Changes Our dismissal begins at 2:11pm each day. Picking up your child early without prior notification, especially between 1:30pm and 2:15pm is disruptive. We understand that emergencies may arise and things come up but respectfully request that dismissal within 15 minutes of our end time be avoided to the greatest extent possible. Unless it is an emergency, please to not call in dismissal changes after 1:00. This will help reduce classroom interruptions at the end of the day and we thank you for your support. Attendance Information Students and parents can view attendance information in “”real time” on X2. All students have had instruction with regard to accessing attendance information on X2 and how to resolve any unexcused absences from class. At the present time students are receiving an email indicating that an “attendance Event” has occurred and to access their X2 account for specific information. Students and parents are expected to check and update attendance errors within one week of the event. In other words, if a parent forgot to call in or if a teacher mistakenly marked a student absent, corrections should be made within one week. The only exception to this rule is student dismissals. A note or phone call is required before the student leaves the building in order to be excused. Please call 978-341-2490 x 7100 to report an absence. Our Calendar is ONLINE Please look for information about these and many more dates on the Master Calendar, which you can access via the High School web site at www.concordcarlisle.net At the top of the page is a link for the Calendar. From Principal Badalament 2015-16 Wow – another year is ending! I know we rarely count the days, but when you stop and think about it for a moment, the years themselves do go by quickly. I know I speak for the whole community when I say we will miss the Class of 2016. They are a wonderful group of students who have demonstrated tremendous leadership and outstanding work in both the curricular and co-curricular arenas. Thanks to the Guidance department, I have some interesting data to share with you based on an exit survey that the seniors take every year: • Over 95% reported having a connection with at least one adult at CCHS (this is perhaps the most important data point of all!) • Approximately 90% of them were accepted at one of their top three choices • The student in the Class of 2016 gave 32,971 hours of their time serving their communities! How did they do it all? Parental support - I have never seen such devoted group of parents. Whether it is helping at school functions, supporting teachers or supporting one’s own child, the parents have been overwhelmingly terrific. As a CCHS parent myself, I am proud to say I have been part of this wonderful community. I know everyone appreciates the faculty at CCHS. They are great and for good reason. The working conditions and the atmosphere created by the students and parents as mentioned above helps us attract a fabulous candidate pool from which to choose. Once here their professionalism and the high expectations that we have at CCHS are obvious to the newcomers. When you take a highly qualified professional and place them into an environment that encourages excellence the result is predictable. I have the utmost in admiration for the hard-working teachers who work with your sons and daughters every day. I hope people also appreciate the work of the support staff at CCHS. The secretaries, building service workers, tutors, kitchen workers, campus monitors, bus drivers and IT crew all are dedicated to making sure that all students’ needs are met and that they are supported and safe on a daily basis. As most of you know, I am completing my final month here at CCHS after serving the students of Concord, Carlisle and Boston for 13 years over a 19-year period (I was an Assistant Principal here from 1997-2001 and have been Principal since 2007). Again, it has been an honor and a privilege to work with your children. This is, and will always be, a special place for me. Final Report Card Every year many students and families miss information on the fourth quarter report card that can have consequences if not responded to in a timely fashion. Students should check for credit reductions (*), incompletes (I), and F’s. Getting an F in English or Health and Fitness might require a last minute decision to attend summer school. Students must obtain prior approval from appropriate department chairs to get credit for summer school courses. After school is out, approval may be obtained from the high school administration. Incompletes (I’s) should be attended to in September as they change to F’s if not completed by the end of the first quarter. Quarter four credit reductions should be cleared up immediately upon return in September by getting them signed off or by appealing them to the Attendance Review Board. To document this approval, students need to pick up a Course Credit Application form from Mary Tessari in the CCHS Records Office, have it signed by the appropriate department chair for each course, and return the form to Sharon Trainor in the Principal’s Office. Using this process, students may obtain credit for course work from any accredited summer program, but they must provide a written description of the course in addition to the number of hours the course meets for courses other than the summer programs listed above. VHS Summer Program: Interested in learning more about a topic that you either haven't had time to take or perhaps you want to learn more about? Consider taking a Virtual High School Summer Course! Courses begin on June 22nd and July 25th, and run for either 4 or 8 weeks. Some sample offerings: Mission to the ISS, An Introduction to Neuroscience, and CAD design. Visit the VHS website (thevirtualhighschool.org/summer) to see a full list of summer offerings. If you are interested, please see Laurelle Mathison in the guidance office as soon as possible so you don't miss out on this opportunity. Making the Most of Summer Summer vacation can provide an opportunity for students to explore career and college options, shore up academic skills, and engage in various enrichment experiences. While the benefits of down time in the summer seem clear, sometimes too much unstructured time for teens can lead to destructive decisions. Please stay involved in planning your son/daughter's summer, and help them stay engaged in healthy summer activities. Summer work or volunteer experience can be valuable activities. Many students use summer volunteer work to meet their community service requirement. The extra flexibility of summer schedule allows for a deeper level of involvement or for service in a more interesting setting than might be possible during the school year. Community service, internships, or summer jobs can provide a way to explore possible career interests. For juniors, the summer provides the opportunity to research colleges through websites and to visit colleges in which they have an interest. Summer is also a good time to identify scholarship information online. The Counseling section of the CCHS website provides an introduction to college research and links to many useful sites. The Naviance web program is an excellent source of information for the college search. Students and parents have been given their own registration codes from their guidance counselors. If you have not registered or forgot your password, please contact Mrs. MacHaffie at [email protected] or 978-341-2490 ext. 7224. Summer also offers the opportunity for academic endeavors. Area summer schools provide programs for students needing to make up credits for high school course work, and several colleges offer summer enrichment programs that may include living on campus. Some students use the summer as an opportunity to prepare for the SAT or ACT. Individual activities such a travel, summer reading, and various personal experiences can also broaden horizons and may provide learning opportunities not available during the school year.
