Dear CCHS Student,
It is not news to you that the cost of higher education in the U.S. continues to rise, even in the
midst of great governmental scrutiny and concern. At Carolinas College, student tuition and fees
support only about a third of our total operating costs; the rest is funded directly by Carolinas
Medical Center and the Carolinas HealthCare Foundation. The College has worked hard to seek
efficiencies in order to keep expenses to a minimum, but operational costs are projected to rise
slightly in the 2014-2015 academic year. We will meet this need both through increased System support and higher tuition. No increase is scheduled for non-credit courses or for any lab,
activity, technology, or graduation fees.
To continue to provide an excellent healthcare education and to implement new technologies,
the College’s Board of Directors has approved a small tuition increase, effective with fall semester, 2014.

For students planning to use federal student aid (Pell Grant, Work Study, Federal Student Direct Loans) for the 2014 - 2015 academic
year starting in the fall, now is the time to complete your 2014 - 2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Go to
www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will need information from your 2013 federal tax return in order to complete the FAFSA. Make sure the Federal
School Code for CCHS (031042) is listed.
Help Wanted - There are several positions available for Federal Work Study this summer at the college (pay is $10.27 per hour; hours are
flexible). To be eligible you must have a processed FAFSA on file for 2013 - 2014 and have determined financial need. Please contact
Kim Bradshaw (Kim.Bradshaw@Carolinas College.edu) or Ann Keathley ([email protected]) if you are interested.
Financial aid refund checks will be available on June 10 at 10 a.m. in the business office (208). You must present your CCHS student ID
to pick up checks.

Congratulations to Michelle Kemp, CCHS Student of the Month for May. Michelle is a first year Radiography student
and her commitment to CCHS is evident on a daily basis. Michelle is a leader among her peers and embraces all
challenges with a smile. Michelle exemplifies the Core Values of Caring, Commitment, Teamwork, and Integrity. She
is an active student within the college and serves as a student representative on the Student Life Committee. Since
the fall 2013 semester, Michelle has attended and actively participated in Student Life Committee meetings and
provided new ideas with a positive attitude, including several that were used during the fall and spring semesters.
Michelle is outgoing and leads by example. She steps up and offers to help when anything needs to be done. She is
a significant asset to the Student Life Committee, but also to CCHS. Michelle represents the college in a positive
light. In everything she does, she gives 100% effort. We are fortunate to have Michelle Kemp as a student at CCHS

Noticed New Carpet in Room 190 and Restroom Enhancements?
The perimeter of carpet in the auditorium is expected to help dampen the “sound bounce” and provide higher quality acoustics. The carpet on the center aisle will also dampen the footsteps of the speaker and audience members. New toilet seat covers in all restrooms
were installed in direct response to student suggestions.

Meet Susan Bass
In response to student feedback, this publication now features a monthly teammate spotlight allowing you to
get to know your teammates and faculty. Susan Bass, MSN, RN, CNE, graduated from a hospital-based nursing program in Wilmington, DE and worked in a variety of clinical areas including adolescent medical surgical, surgical-trauma ICU, emergency department and the operating room. Her BSN was obtained from Wilmington College and MSN from Queens University. She is currently working toward her Doctorate in Nursing
Practice and hopes to graduate in 2015. When not working as the Learning Resource Specialist/Nursing
Faculty or studying, Susan has a passion for spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite pet, an
Australian Cattle Dog named Ziva, keeps her busy. Lee, her significant other, is a retired Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer, and helps to maintain some semblance of order and normalcy in what would otherwise be a
hectic lifestyle. Susan’s office is in room 154.

Graduation - It’s FINALLY Here!
Congratulations to all nursing, radiologic technology and surgical technology students who will
be graduating on May 2. The commencement speaker is Ms. Connie Bonebrake, Senior Vice
President and Chief Patient Experience Officer at Carolinas HealthCare System. The College will
also recognize graduates from 1944, 1954, and 1964 on the occasion of their 70th, 60th, and
50th anniversaries. Among the alumni being recognized is Ms. Elinor Caddell, graduate of the
first class of nursing students at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Ms. Caddell went on to earn a
Master’s Degree in Nursing from Duke University and later was recruited back to Charlotte to
help start the nursing program at University of North Carolina, Charlotte. The ceremony will be
held at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church at 1117 South Blvd. and all are welcome to attend.
Compliance Corner - Insulin Dispensing
Carolinas Medical Center has implemented a new quality improvement initiative involving insulin dispensation. As insulin is considered a
high risk medication, two major changes will be seen on patient units:
1. Basal insulin doses will be sent by the pharmacy.
2. Regular insulin will now be stored in the Omnicell for access as needed.
Data collection has revealed that a large part of a nurse’s day can be spent on insulin dosing. Insulin Glargine, Insulin Detemir, NPH and
70/30 will now be pre-drawn according to doctor’s orders by the pharmacy and sent to the floor throughout the day like other meds. Insulin doses will come in standard insulin syringes with Cerner labels ready to scan. Regarding regular insulin doses, evidence also shows
infections can be reduced if multi-dose vials are stored in one place, like the Omnicell, and not brought room-to-room as needed. Another
safety risk is reduced because the pharmacy will triple check stock supplied in the Omnicell. When needed, nurses will log onto the Omnicell, sign out the number of units required, draw up the insulin dose, label it and once a witness verifies the dose, return the vial to the
drawer. At the bedside, after the patient is scanned and verified, and the dose scanned and verified, the dose can be administered.

Inspiration in Addiction Recovery (Chaplain’s Grand Rounds)
May 15, noon to 1 p.m. This month’s topic is of special interest to anyone planning a career in oncology, or who has battled or watched a
loved one or patient battle cancer. It will touch and change you! This is part of the Chaplin’s Grand Rounds, and is based on the premise
that there is a marvelous interface between inspiration and healing at the deepest level. When patients tap their vast resources for
strength and endurance, outcomes are often better. The CHS Spiritual Care Division sponsors this annual 9-part series and it’s open and
free to all students and CHS teammates. Each topic stands alone so it’s OK to come to just one. This year’s series explores the relationship of healing and inspiration. Held in the Suzanne Freeman Auditorium at CMC (ask Joy), it’s free, and open to students. Bring your
lunch and enjoy!

BCLS for the Healthcare Provider
May 7 & 21, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. Cost $60. Textbook included. This course is designed for professional rescuers or students required to have
professional rescuer certification for their healthcare program of study. The course provides information on adult and pediatric CPR, tworescuer scenarios, use of the bag-valve mask, foreign-body airway obstruction (conscious and unconscious), AED, special resuscitation
situations, and other cardiopulmonary emergencies. Questions about course information or requirements should be directed to Christy

CCHS Honors Our Heroes on Memorial Day
Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 26. There will be no classes and the college’s administrative offices will be closed. Ever wonder about the difference between Veteran’s Day (in November) and Memorial Day? Wonder no longer:
Veteran’s Day honors all U.S. military veterans, both living and dead.
Memorial Day honors those U.S. military veterans who gave their lives in war.
On May 26, as you enjoy your day away from work or school, pause to remember the hundreds of thousands
of men and women who were courageous enough to fight for the freedom and liberties we enjoy today.
Many of them never returned from those conflicts. They are truly worthy of our reflection on this hallowed
day.
CCHS Treats Your Preceptors
Precepting with fulltime professionals is part of the magic of a healthcare clinical experience, but it only happens when busy clinical employees are willing to give generously of their time. To say “thank you” to preceptors, the College held a drawing for tickets to a Charlotte
Knight’s game. Lucky winners were Susan Deem, Frank Carvaia, Kristy Snell, and Ashley Nelson. Help your preceptors know how much
you value their time and talents with a thank you note or a WOW card.
Successful Phone-a-thon Was Lots of Fun
For three nights in April, offices throughout CCHS were full of 30 - 40 students
from 6 - 8 p.m. each evening. Students were treated to dinner and a brief training session, then hit the phones, where they practiced saying, with a smile,
“Can we count on you for a gift this year?” To their surprise, many alumni said
YES! Pledges are still coming in, but at last count the proceeds - which support
college programs, equipment, and scholarships, totaled $17,000. Three students topped the fundraising charts and won nightly prizes: Shannon Bain,
Cathy Beer and Sally Ware. The best story we heard? One student happened to
call an alumnus who, she discovered, was a neighbor of her parents!
Avenue C - A Two-Month Retrospective
At a recent meeting of student leaders, the new college canteen, “Avenue C,” was given a strong thumbs up. Praise was given to the
broad selection of healthy foods, the accessibility of snacks and meals at all hours, and the honor code approach to consumerism. Students asked for prices to be posted on the coffee maker and consideration of MasterCard as a payment option.
CCHS Goes Multi-Campus
CCHS now offers classes at CMC-Mercy as well as in the Rankin Building. Effective in May, the Surgical Technology (ST) program will hold
all summer labs and clinicals in the simulated surgical suite at CMC-Mercy Hospital. Many ST lecture classes will also meet there during
summer semester. In the fall when ST clinicals move to hospital operating rooms, they’ll return to Rankin Education Center for didactic.
Histotechnology has been meeting in its new student lab and classroom space at CMC-Mercy since fall of 2013.
New Class Offered At CCHS
In April, the College’s Curriculum Committee approved a new Special Topics class and that class is being fleshed out for final approval as
an accelerated study of Quality in HealthCare, to be offered May 10 - June 30 as a 1, 2, or 3-credit course. Experts in the field, primarily
executives from Carolinas HealthCare System will present lectures on topics too new to be in textbooks yet. Topics like: Can Accountable
Care for Affordable Care” Can the Medical Home Model Provide a Solution to Population Disease Management in High Risk Populations?
Students will learn to search for root causes of hospital-acquired infection. Interested? See anyone in Student Services for details on how
to register for this intriguing 1, 2, or 3-credit class.
CCHS Is Going “Blind!”
In response to best practices recommended by nationwide campus security personnel, CCHS is having blinds installed on classroom and
office door windows. These will allow the instructor or others to pull the blinds in the unlikely event of a Code Silver (Active Shooter). At
other times, blinds will remain up, another safety recommendation from campus officials across the country.
Congratulations, Histotechnology Program
On April 1 and 2, visiting examiners representing the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) looked at all
facets of our Histotechnology program and left with no recommendations or suggestions. As a result, full accreditation of the program is
expected when the NAACLS Board next meets.

Make a Difference This Summer
The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is in need of volunteer summer camp counselors. Volunteers have a 1-to-1 ratio with campers, helping them with activities (Fishing, canoeing, softball) and routine daily tasks (showering, toileting, dressing). Volunteers are
trained to assist with wheelchair transfers, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and more. For more information, call Lucas Coe at

2014 Alumni Trip Was Amazing!

friends traveled to three European
countries and one principality on the
2014 alumni trip. The group flew to
Barcelona on March 19 then proceeded to visit the French Riviera (Nimes,
Nice), Monaco - where a few gamblers
learned “the House always wins,”
Cinque Terre, then wrapped up the 12
-day trip in Florence, Italy. Said RT
alumnus, Patty McCrary, “Where are
we going next year?” One young alumnus spent the first week looking for
golden arches, but then discovered
gelato. Now she’s hooked on travel.
