2015
From the Principal
Dear York Catholic Family,
York Catholic administration, teachers, staff, parents, board members and volunteers
came together this past year to review the school’s mission statement. Through a
series of meetings and brainstorming sessions, a new statement was composed to
better define the purpose of our work and to serve as our guide as we continue to
provide a quality Catholic education for our students. The new mission statement is as
follows:
York Catholic High School educates students
focused on the cultivation of faith, mind, and heart.
We, as a Christian family, are guided by a Catholic moral compass
as modeled by Jesus Christ.
Our students are academically sound, intellectually curious,
and ethically prepared to serve the global community with grace.
You have shown incredible support of our mission by your generous donations of time, talent, and treasure to York
Catholic. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! In last year’s summer issue of Greensleeves, we introduced you to
our new Executive Director of Advancement, Ms. Maida Connor, who was hired to “raise awareness and new monies
to benefit the school and its students.” As a result of her leadership, the hard work of the entire Advancement
Team, the dedication of the Institutional Advancement Committee to the School Board, and most importantly, the
philanthropic support of so many, I am pleased to share that we have had a tremendous year that has translated to
greater opportunities and success for our students.
Thank you to all of you for your support, whether you are listed in our donor report, you volunteered for one of our
programs, served on one of our committees, or you have cheered from the sidelines while reading about the good
work that is going on at York Catholic. We value all of you! Your caring makes a difference for our student body.
Our 93 graduates this year felt your support as 96% of them went on to post-secondary education or military
service with over 9 million dollars in scholarship offers. I say this time and time again, but I promise that you will
not find another school in the surrounding area that comes close to that level of achievement. Again, one that
could not be realized without the stalwart support of our parents, alumni, and friends, which allows our commitment
to offering a quality spiritual and academic YC education to continue.
This past year, we were able to raise money to support tuition assistance, technology, teachers’ salaries through
the Forjan Endowment Fund, athletics, art, music, professional development opportunities, and the newly created
Sister Dorothy Fund. Through our new online giving option and efforts in social media and email messaging, we
saw an increase in our donations by 13% and an increase in our donor population. Online donors also appreciated
the opportunity to specifically designate their donation to an area of their choice or to honor a special person.
Speaking of memorial funds, most recently, we have added the Sister Gilmary Fund, to be used toward an annual
English Writing Award…something near and dear to Sister Gil’s heart. For those who did not know Sister Gilmary
Beagle, IHM, she was everything we all remember of our most favorite teacher and more. Sister came to us near
the end of her teaching career in 2007 and while she had previously spent time as a teacher and administrator in
New Jersey and South Bend, Indiana, it was York Catholic that captured her heart. She “bled green and gold” and
loved her students with “puddles of purple passion.” The impact she had on so many during her years at YC was
especially felt as almost 50 students, alumni, teachers, parents, and board members made the trip to Scranton to
honor her during the funeral services. We will forever miss our Sister Gil. She insisted that in lieu of flowers, people
would be able to contribute memorial gifts to YC in her name. It is only fitting that we honor her by using those
contributions to award students as she would, by acknowledging their English talents.
As always, we thank you for being an important part of our York Catholic family. We look forward to seeing you at
our many events planned for this upcoming year, including our enhanced Homecoming Alumni Weekend in
September!
Sincerely,
Katie Seufert ‘96

A Tribute to Sister Gilmary
By Terri Eline, YCHS English Department Chair
It is with great sympathy and sorrow we share the passing of our beloved Sister
Gilmary Beagle, IHM on June 18, 2015. As a past administrator, writer, adjunct
professor, and consultant, Sister dedicated her life wholly to our Lord and the
ministry of education. She was a proud member of the Fighting Irish faculty from
August 2007 until the fall of 2013 when her illness left her unable to teach. Sister's
passion for life was contagious and only surpassed by her love of her family, her
beloved dog Sam, and her students.
Sister Gilmary was a woman who stomped into our lives eight years ago. Her
resume read like a Who’s Who model. She taught at Purdue, she wrote textbooks,
she administrated, she knew Olivier’s role in the film Macbeth by heart. She was a
Renaissance woman.
So it is ironic the first words
that come to mind about her
are paper clips. Seriously,
paper clips. No one collected
paper clips like Gilmary: bright
Sister Gilmary Beagle
colors, standard issue, dog1944-2015
bone shaped, Notre Dame is
#1, brass plated, gold-plated —
thousands, literally, thousands of paper clips — a veritable
Guinness Book of World Records number of paper clips. As an
English teacher, she would understand the symbolism and
analogy. The thousands of paper clips she owned/hoarded
were a message. The paper clips connected us. To some of us
she was Sister Gil, to others Sister Gilmary Beagle, sometimes
Big Sis, or if you were in trouble, adult and student alike, she
referred to herself as “the Nun.” To her beloved sister, Cathy,
she was just Barb. She held us, these disparate groups,
together with paper clips.
Treasured Memories
“Sister Gilmary's energy was contagious. Her
love and passion for teaching would hit you as
soon as you would walk into her room. Even on
days when I did not feel like doing anything,
walking into her class would right away change
my mind set. I will never forget her willingness to
help a student who was struggling, or challenge a
student who was highly achieving. She was one
of the best teachers I have ever had. Her sense
of humor was unmatchable, causing every day
events to be a little more interesting. Her legacy
will always live on in both her students and with
the York Catholic family.“
~Kent Fullerton ‘15
Each of us, in our own way, offers our farewell to Sister. How
lucky we are to have something to connect us, to have
someone who makes saying goodbye so difficult. As has been
written before, some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we
are never, ever, the same. We cannot cry because it’s over,
but smile because she happened.
She touched so many lives: peers, teaching buddies, fellow
sisters, her nurses and caretakers, her beloved sister Cathy,
her dog Sam, but her greatest passion was her students. Many
heard her voice across the hall as she began each class with
“Let us pray good people.” She told her students she loved
them with “puddles of purple passion,” but they would rewrite
their essays anyway. Her students knew her obsession with
owls, dogs, World War II, and England. Many knew her passion
for Doves’ dark chocolate pieces and whether it was a one or
two piece kind of day. Her monthly English department dining
buddies knew she would order beef because what else was
worth eating? She told anyone who would listen how she loved
York Catholic, how she found her home here, and how she
“bled green and gold.”
YC Crochet & Knitting Club
Sister Gilmary donated her yarn and the club
took on some of her unfinished projects. Here
some of the club members finished a lap
blanket for her. Pictured left to right are Katie
Siple, Caitlin Bowser, Jennifer Gingerich,
Catherine Doyle, and Jennifer Nigro.
We have been blessed by her presence. As Dickens reminds us, “life is made of ever so many partings welded
together,” and our greatest expectation is we’ll have one more meeting together. All who knew her well, knew she
never announced her departure; she refused to use the words “good-bye.” But perhaps she will forgive us if we
send her off with words from Shakespeare: so, “Farewell my Sister, fare thee well. The elements be kind to thee,
and make thy spirits all of comfort. Fare thee well.” Good-bye may seem forever, but in our hearts are the
memories, and there Sister will always remain.

York Catholic Gift Societies
“Catch Our Irish Spirit!”
York Catholic is very appreciative of donors who
support the school annually, give legacy gifts, and
remember the school in estate planning. In recognition
of leadership giving, YC is pleased to recognize donors
in new and renewed gift societies for fiscal year ’16
(July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016).
York Catholic is pleased to announce the “Catch Our
Irish Spirit” Annual Fund Campaign for fiscal year ’16
(July 1, 2015-June 30, 2016).
Mystical Rose Society (annual gift society)
The Mystical Rose Society honors private and
corporate donors who contribute gifts annually of at
least $1,000 to any fund or program at York Catholic.
Mystical Rose Society members may give a personal
gift joined by a corporate matching gift to meet the
membership level.
In tribute to our Patroness Mary, the Mystical Rose,
members of the Mystical Rose Society support the
teachings and values of a Catholic education for our
young people.
Mystical Rose Society donors are listed on a special
plaque within the lobby of YC, listed in the honor roll
of donors, and are invited to special YC events
including Masses.
Because tuition revenues don’t fully cover the cost of
educating our YC students, the Annual Fund is vital
to ensuring the financial health of our school. Donor
contributions help us to provide an exceptional
educational experience for our talented students.
Please watch your mail for the “Catch Our Irish
Spirit!” Annual Fund appeal from our chairperson,
Coach Jim Forjan, and join us in celebrating YC! If
you don’t want to wait, you can visit
www.yorkcatholic.org and give online – one time
gifts or an annual gift paid in monthly installments–
it’s easy to show you care about York Catholic.
Remember – every gift matters and will be counted
in our philanthropy participation rates. By working
together we can meet our $300,000 Annual Fund
goal in unrestricted giving before June 30, 2016.
If you’ve given before, thank you!
If you haven’t yet given to YC, please “Catch Our
Irish Spirit!” and become an Annual Fund donor this
The Gaelic Society is York Catholic’s leadership gift
society. Formerly named the Gaelic Club, this lifetime year!
gift society recognizes contributions of at least
$10,000 to York Catholic (one time gift, cumulative giving, or estate/planned gifts). Society members may
give a personal gift joined by a corporate matching gift to meet the membership level.
Gaelic Society (lifetime gift society)
Gaelic Society donors will be listed in our honor roll and are featured in donor recognition areas at YC.
Current Gaelic Club members, who are now Gaelic Society members, as well as new Gaelic Society donors,
are valued partners in supporting York Catholic’s commitment to academic excellence, spiritual enrichment,
and personal growth for our students.
The Maria Society (new planned gift society)
Donors remembering YC through planned gifts and/or estate bequests valued at least $10,000 are members
of York Catholic’s new planned gift society, The Maria Society.
Previous planned giving donors/estate donors will be listed in the honor roll of donors as members of this new
gift society.
Members of The Maria Society are also Gaelic Society members, and entitled to appropriate donor recognition
and gift society benefits.
Types of planned gifts may include:
 Estate Bequest
 Life Insurance Policy (donor pays the premiums)
 Annuities/Charitable Remainder Trusts
 Stock/Real Estate/Art or Luxury Item (appraised value $10,000+/can be sold)
Donors interested in making a legacy gift to YC are encouraged to speak with their financial planner and/or
estate attorney to discuss optimal gift options. Confidential conversations may also be arranged with Maida
Connor, Executive Director of Advancement, by phoning her at 717-846-8871 x30.

Legacy – We Are Family
York Catholic Legacies are YC families who have several generations of YC grads. We currently have records
of many families, however, we are quite sure there are more!
We appreciate the continued faith, trust and investment in the York Catholic experience. We would be thrilled
to be able to identify these proud family connections, some of which now span four generations. They may
include mother, father, son, daughter, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, cousin, legal adoption, and
step-relation. Please take a moment to complete the Family Tree survey on pages 7-8 and return it in the
envelope provided or complete it online at www.yorkcatholic.org. If you have any questions, please contact
Jennifer Stees Glassmyer ‘ 93, Director of Constituent Relations and Special Events, at
[email protected] or 717 -846-8871 x51.

Our Family Tree is Growing
York Catholic is embarking on an ambitious project to build a YC family tree which captures our alumni, their
YC relationships, their activities and education (after YC), their careers, and their interests. In order to do
this, we need you to tell us about yourself. If you would kindly complete and return this survey, it will help
our YC Alumni Association with projects including reunion planning, networking, job searches, and notifications
of YC events and projects that may be of interest to you. If you prefer to complete the survey online, it can be
found on the homepage of the YC website at www.yorkcatholic.org. Many thanks for your help.

Growing the Family
By Heather Hoffman ‘91, Director of Admissions & Enrollment
I have one of the best jobs at YC – I get to give tours, meet new families,
schmooze and talk about YC. And for those of you who know me, I like to
schmooze and talk! But more important than talking, my job requires me to listen.
I love to hear the different reasons families choose YC. One family chose YC
because they want their son to be judged by who he is and not by the clothes he
wears. Another family appreciated the academic rigor, discipline, and safety that
YC provides. One girl shared that she loved our chalkboards! She said she was
tired of always having her focus be on her computer and that our blackboards were
a refreshing change to the monotony of constant technology. My favorite reason I
heard this spring during a student’s shadow visit was the teachers actually talked
to her and asked her questions to get to know her. That’s one of the best things
about YC! Our teachers and staff get to know our students on both an academic
and personal level.
Many families who want their child to have the value of a YC education cannot
afford tuition. Increased efforts in fundraising is working to raise new Tuition
Assistance monies to help more families.

Director of Admissions
& Enrollment
Spring and summer have been busy times in the Admissions/Enrollment office.
We had a great Open House in May. We also hosted an amazingly successful New
Parent Orientation for all of our new families. We are introducing a Parent
Ambassador group chaired by YC parent and alum, LeAnn (Arcuri) Citrone ‘90, to
help families transition into the YC family. We look forward to getting
to know our new students at our New Student Orientations in August.

This fall we have 3 different admissions opportunities for families to
experience YC. We are hosting an Open House on Sunday, October
18. Visitors can tour the school, sit in on classes, and meet students,
parents, and staff. We are also hosting Welcome Wednesdays for
families who want to just drop by and check out our school. These
dates are Wednesday, September 30 and Wednesday, December 9.
Families can take a tour with one of our YC Ambassadors and
experience what happens on a normal school day. Prospective
students are always welcome to spend the day “shadowing” one of our
YC Ambassadors. All they need to do is call to set up a visit.
I love this school and want to share the YC experience with others.
Join me in helping to spread the word. If you know a family who is
interested in YC, please
Greensleeves with them so
they can see what we’re
about, and be sure to tell
them about the dates of
these events. Encourage
interested families to

Academic Assistance Center
Success Story
For the last ten years, students with documented learning differences
have been receiving additional instructional support through the York
Catholic Academic Assistance Center (AAC). Often, students with
learning differences become discouraged, or feel alone and dejected due
to their personal learning challenges. At York Catholic, assistance and
help are available for these students in the form of accommodations
including extra time spent on the formation of good study habits,
increased assistance outside the regular classroom, and additional time
for assignment completion. Once a student is enrolled in the AAC
program, their previous negative feelings often become replaced with an
increase in self-confidence and a sense of personal accomplishment.
During AAC time, students receive special attention and assistance in
subject areas with which they are having trouble, as well as work on
areas to strengthen their academic and study skills with a certified
teacher. From help on note-taking skills to test taking techniques;
assistance with over-due assignments to help with homework, students
work through individual obstacles that impede their educational process
and ultimate success.
Adam Desseyn ‘14
applied the skills he learned through
YC’s Academic Assistance Center
to thrive in college
Adam Desseyn’s experience with the Academic Assistance Center helped change his life. Adam struggled with his
gross and fine motor skill development. Moving from class to class with a stack of books, tripping or losing his
balance, dropping papers, and being unable to keep up with the flow of students in the hallway produced anxiety.
Accommodations were made for him to be slightly late for class which removed the stress and took the edge off.
This allowed him to relax and start the class with a clear mind instead of using class time to calm down and get
focused.
Adam used his time in the AAC working with AAC Director, Carolyn Obermeier. Adam was goal-oriented, but didn’t
know how to make a plan to reach his goal. Mrs. Obermeier introduced tools and helped him develop methods to
individually tackle steps toward his goal. It was up to Adam to execute the plan. “The AAC staff advocated for me
when I needed it. They helped me to balance school work and life skills,” Adam said. “I loosened up. I had the
support. I was able to relax and stop fighting it and get focused. I had extra time thanks
to the AAC. I didn’t want the extra time. I would rather have been doing other things, but
I needed the extra time for my brain to process on an equal level as others.”
“I needed the
extra time for
my brain to
process on an
equal level as
others.”
Adam went from struggling to get to class to thriving with his academics. He was ranked in
the top 5 in his class, was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, a member of the National
Honor Society and Student Council, and was an Eagle Scout with his project devoted to
cleaning and painting the York Catholic locker rooms.
Now a sophomore Computer Science Game Programming/Math student at DeSales
University, Adam earned the Presidential Scholarship and the Knights of Columbus National
Scholarship. He was named to the Dean’s List both of his freshmen semesters, hosts a
weekly radio show, and works for a tech start-up as a content creator and mentor by designing challenges for
computer gaming groups. He’s become a teacher of sorts and is inspiring and giving
back to students.
He used the social skills he learned through the AAC to participate in People to
People with a focus on Celtic culture and service and traveled to England, Ireland,
Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. He also traveled to France this past spring
with his Economics class.
AAC prepared Adam for the challenges of college academics and taught him the skills
to advocate for himself. “AAC gave me the tools and confidence to engage in
independent study and test out of classes while earning credit through CLEP testing,”
he said. He now analyzes a situation and is able to assess his own capabilities,
strengths, and weaknesses to decide his course of action. Adam concluded by
saying, “I would not be where I am today without Mrs. Obermeier and York Catholic’s
Academic Assistance Center. Cut. Print. End of Interview.”

ANNUAL ALUMNI SENIOR BREAKFAST
The Class of 2015 celebrated their transition from YC students to YC alumni at the annual Senior Breakfast in May.
Family, friends, teachers and staff were invited to capture memories, write messages of best wishes and support in
letters to the students as they were honored for achieving this milestone in their lives. Seniors received a special
blessing from Father Keith Carroll ’00 followed by a delicious breakfast prepared by many volunteers. The morning
was filled with lots of excitement and good energy from all who attended and was capped off with words of
encouragement from special alumni guest speaker Adam Sentz ‘11 and 2015 Ambassador Hannah Laslo. Hannah
inspired her classmates to appreciate the value of a York Catholic education by stating, “When your hands are deep
in the clay of your character traits try to remember where you came from. By implementing the values we learned
in and out of the classroom of this high school into our new selves, we can be great.”

York Catholic: From Toddler to Teacher
By Ryan Luckman ‘99
A few years ago, the principal asked the faculty to state their name and how long they have been
at York Catholic as a way to introduce everyone to the new faculty members. When it was my turn,
I stated my name and said I have been at York Catholic for 31 years. Though it was a false
statement in terms of work experience, it was a true statement when relating to my life. My
mother tells me that I was at York Catholic, in my green and gold onesie, six months after my
birth, visiting my father who was a teacher. Due to this I have been asked to give my account on
what YC is like from my perspective, child of a teacher/coach, student, and teacher.
FALL
I knew school was always ready to get going when I would go with my father to YC in the early
morning for cross country practice. This is the first true memory I have of my life at YC. As an
energetic young kid, nothing was better than to be able to run around with the cooler older kids.
The girls on the team were always so nice to me and while I thought it was because I was cute, I
now realize they probably were sorry for how slow I was trying to run against the team. I will
never forget being the “rabbit” for practice.
As I grew older, I still needed to be at YC prior to school starting due to soccer practice. Stretching
on the grass when the morning dew has not been burned off may be the worst experience you can
endure at 7 am. I will never forget our championship season, calling ourselves Ben’s Kids after our
assistant coach, and being scared to death before the Susquehannock game due to a fiery speech from our
teammate, BJ, who lived in Southern York. It basically consisted of him yelling, “I live with these guys and we are not
going to lose.”
Always a
Catholic Crazy
As for school, the most important thing as a student was finding some place cool when the
building was hotter than an oven. The next issue was the first day/week conversations.
Prior to cell phones and social media, some students would not communicate during the
summer and it was always fun to catch up and see how people changed. I always believe
the first exam is the most important for a student (and now as a teacher). It is a way for
teachers to set the tone and for students to see how the teacher formats his/her
assessments. The first test allows you to see what the year will be like, what to study, what
not to study, and what is important. Finally, fall was about Homecoming, the festivities, the
queen, the game, and the dance. I enjoyed all of my dances though I will say as a teacher,
chaperoning is the hardest part of my job.
WINTER
There are two things all students are worried about once the weather changes: snow days
and holiday vacation. Trust me when I tell you that no matter how much students want a
two-hour delay or day off due to snow, teachers are wishing it ten times more. Though we
don’t want those days all the time there is nothing like a break when we have gone four
tough days in a row.
Voted Most Athletic
His Senior Year
The big moment for all students is when the subject of midterms is broached. I love that the midterms are now back
in their rightful place at the end of the semester. As a student and teacher I never thought too much about
midterms. It does affect the semester grade but the work over the two quarters tells me more about the student
than does one test.
As for sports, winter is the time for what was the main sport at YC when I was a student, basketball. It has been
interesting to see how the boys of YC have gone from all wanting to play basketball to instead playing football or
lacrosse. For me, basketball was my favorite sport and I still have so many great memories from that time and will
never forget my coaches, teammates, and especially the Catholic Crazies, the best fans in the area.
SPRING
Once spring hits, the mood of the school completely changes from an idea of when will winter/school ever end to it is
almost over. You can sense the mood change once the sun is out for a couple of days and the classroom windows
open. Students become more anxious, they stare out the windows for longer periods of time and if those students
are seniors, they begin a vocal countdown (the written countdown started earlier) which only reduces his/her work
effort with each passing day. It is amusing how the seniors who were the most vocal at the beginning of the year on
how they can’t wait to get out of YC, are now the ones leading the talk on how they will miss YC and the people.

York Catholic High School
2014-2015 Donor Report
Thank you for joining York Catholic as we honor faith, mind, heart and family
in the educational and spiritual preparation of our students.
Contributions received July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, supported our academic programs, teachers, music and
performing arts programs, athletics, facilities, technology, extra-curricular programs, tuition assistance and
scholarships, and most importantly, the YC educational experience for our talented students.
Donations to YC in restricted as well as unrestricted support this fiscal year totaled over $693,000
which represents a significant increase in gifts from individuals, corporations, and friends of YC.
This support is treasured by the entire York Catholic community.
Special thanks to the donors we have listed as well as the many donors who elect to remain anonymous.
We cherish you all and keep you in our hearts and prayers.
We also treasure the many alumni, parents, and friends of YC who give time, talent, and resources as our volunteers
— thank you for all you give! Your contributions are greatly appreciated!

US Lacrosse Girls’ All-Academic Team
US Lacrosse named three
York Catholic players, Lisa
Casagrande, Lindsey China,
and Maura Palandro, to the
2015 All-Academic Team!
A US Lacrosse AllAcademic Team member is a
player who exhibits
exemplary lacrosse skills,
good sportsmanship on the
field, and represents high
standards of academic
achievement in the
classroom. This player
should also have left her
mark beyond the lacrosse
field and the classroom by
making significant
contributions of service to
the school and/or her
community.
US Lacrosse Girls’ All-Academic Team
Congratulations to the York Catholic Girls’ Lacrosse team who had three
players named to US Lacrosse Girls’ All-Academic Team for 2015.
Front row: Lindsey China, Maura Palandro, Lisa Casagrande
Back row: Principal Katie Seufert, YC Girls’ Lacrosse Head Coach
Rob Linthicum
We also acknowledge YC
Girls’ Lacrosse Head Coach
Rob Linthicum for bringing
the girls’ achievements to
the attention of US Lacrosse
and for providing not just
coaching guidance in their
playing careers, but also
mentoring guidance in their
lives.
