Vom 5. bis 7. Februar 2016 ist Südkorea, vertreten
durch die staatliche Münzstätte KOMSCO (Korea
Minting & Security Printing Corporation), unterstützt durch das weltführende Unternehmen in
der Münzrondenherstellung POONGSAN und durch
HWADONG, der internationalen Vertriebsstelle für
Gedenkmünzen aus Südkorea, offizieller Ehrengast
der World Money Fair Berlin.
From February 5 to 7, 2016, South Korea, represented by the national mint KOMSCO (Korea
Minting & Security Printing Corporation), supported by POONGSAN – leading corporation in
the production of coin blanks, and by HWADONG,
the international distributor of commemorative
coins from South Korea, will be the official Guest
of Honor at the Berlin World Money Fair.
Alle drei Unternehmen aus dem wirtschaftlichen
und kulturell aufstrebenden Land Südkorea werden in Berlin eine feine und professionelle Visitenkarte abgeben.
Für die Münzensammler in Europa haben sie dies
bereits früher mit den Gedenkmünzen zur Sommerolympiade in Seoul 1988 sowie vierzehn Jahre
später mit den Erinnerungsmünzen an die FIFAFußballweltmeisterschaft 2002 getan.
The three companies from the economically and
culturally highly developed country of South Korea
will deliver a distinguished and professional performance.
As coin collectors in Europe will remember, they
have done it before – with the commemorative
coins issued on the occasion of the Seoul Summer
Olympic Games in 1988 and fourteen years later
with the collector coins for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Beide Münzenprogramme erfüllten alle anspruchsvollen Anforderungen des Weltmünzenmarktes.

coin collectors. The first curtain call for the new
commemorative coins for collectors will be at the
World Money Fair in Berlin – of which we, as organizers of the event, are especially proud.

Die World Money Fair ist die weltgrößte Münzmesse und bietet eine Plattform, auf der sich seit
über 40 Jahren alljährlich die bedeutendsten Akteure des internationalen Münzmarktes treffen.
Es ist mir daher eine große Freude, im Namen des
Bundesministers der Finanzen, Herrn Dr. Wolfgang
Schäuble, alle Aussteller und Besucher herzlich
willkommen zu heißen.
Auch die Bundesrepublik Deutschland mit ihren
fünf Münzstätten und der Verkaufsstelle für
Sammlermünzen präsentiert sich in diesem Jahr erneut mit einem interessanten Münzprogramm.
Nachdem wir im vergangenen Jahr die in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland bislang
einmalige 25 Euro-Feinsilbermünze zum Thema
„25 Jahre Deutsche Einheit“ emittierten, wird auch
das Jahr 2016 aufregende Neuheiten vorhalten.
Besonders freue ich mich, dass ich auf der World
Money Fair 2016 als Höhepunkt eine prägetechnische Weltneuheit vorstellen darf: die neue 5-EuroGedenkmünze der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
Diese innovative Münze ist das Ergebnis einer im
Jahr 2006 begonnenen Entwicklung, deren Serienreife Ende 2013 erreicht wurde. Es handelt es sich
um eine dreiteilige Münze, die aus einem inneren
metallischen Kern (Pille), einem äußeren metallischen Ring und einem Kunststoffring besteht. Der
zwischen Ring und Pille eingefügte prägbare Kunststoffring (Polymerring) verbindet die Komponenten
dauerhaft miteinander. Die Münze mit dem Titel

fair. For over 40 years, it has provided an annual
forum that brings together the leading stakeholders in the international numismatic trade.
Therefore, it is a great pleasure for me to welcome
all of the exhibitors and visitors on behalf of the
Federal Minister of Finance, Wolfgang Schäuble.
The Federal Republic of Germany, with its five
mints and its official sales agency for collector’s
coins, will once again be featuring an interesting
coin programme at this year’s fair.
Last year, for the first time in the history of the
Federal Republic, we issued a 25 euro pure silver
coin commemorating 25 years of German unity.
The year 2016 also holds exciting novelties.
This year at the 2016 fair, I am particularly pleased to be able to introduce a highlight of innovative minting technology: the Federal Republic’s
new five euro commemorative coin. This new coin, the world’s first of its kind, is the result of a
development process that began in 2006 and reached production readiness in late 2013. It is a
three-part coin composed of an inner metallic
core (disc), an outer metallic ring and a plastic
ring. The plastic polymer ring, which is inserted
between the outer ring and the core disc, joins
the components together permanently. The coin,
entitled “Planet Earth”, will attract more widespread attention to German collector’s coins and, more
importantly, will address younger target groups.
Mit der Entscheidung, die 10-Euro-Sammlermünzen ab 2016 durch 20-Euro-Sammlermünzen aus
Sterlingsilber zu ersetzen, ist dem Wunsch vieler
Sammlerinnen und Sammler nach „wertigeren“
Münzen und einer qualitätvollen Ausgabepolitik
entsprochen worden. Die Bundesregierung will den
Sammlermarkt damit nachhaltig stärken. Als erste
20-Euro-Silber-Gedenkmünze erscheint passend
zur Eröffnung der World Money Fair das Motiv „Rotkäppchen“ aus der Serie Grimms Märchen. Es folgen weitere vier Ausgaben zu politisch und kulturell bedeutenden Anlässen.
Ebenfalls traditionell zum Eröffnungstag der Messe
folgt eine neue 2-Euro-Gedenkmünze aus der Serie
Bundesländer, die im Jahr 2016 das Bundesland
Sachsen mit dem Motiv des Dresdner Zwingers
thematisch aufgreift.
Gerne möchte ich zudem auf die bereits bekannten
Ausgaben aufmerksam machen. Fortgesetzt wird
ab dem Jahr 2016 das 20-Euro-Goldmünzenprogramm mit der Serie „Heimische Vögel“ und den
Vogelarten Nachtigall, Pirol, Uhu, Wanderfalke,
Weißstorch und Schwarzspecht. In der Serie
„UNESCO Welterbe“ wird im Jahr 2016 die
100-Euro-Goldmünze mit der „Altstadt Regensburg
mit Stadtamhof“ als Münzmotiv erscheinen.
Es bleibt also spannend und ich hoffe, ich habe
nicht zu viel versprochen!
We believe that, in the next few years, we will see
more coins issued with colourful polymer rings.
In addition, by replacing the ten euro collector coins with 20 euro collector coins of sterling silver
starting in 2016, we have responded to the wishes of many collectors for more valuable coins
and a minting policy focused on quality. In this
way, the German government aims to strengthen
and invigorate the collecting market for the long
term. The first 20 euro silver commemorative coin, which is being issued concurrently with the
opening of the World Money Fair, is devoted to
“Little Red Riding Hood” from the Grimm’s fairy
tales series. An additional four coins will be issued
commemorating politically and culturally significant topics.
Likewise, as is traditional on the opening day of the
World Money Fair, a new two euro commemorative
coin from the Bundesländer series will be issued; in
2016, the Bundesland Saxony will be represented
with a design depicting the Dresden Zwinger.
I would also like to direct your attention to already well-known coins. Beginning in 2016, the 20
euro gold coin programme will be continued with
the series “Native Birds”; the featured bird species
will be the nightingale, the oriole, the eagle owl,
the peregrine falcon, the white stork and the
black woodpecker. In the series “UNESCO World
Heritage”, a 100 euro gold coin honouring the old
town of Regensburg and the Stadtamhof will be
issued in 2016.
As you can see, things will remain interesting! I
hope I haven't promised too much.

Der World Money Fair Award gilt als einer der
wichtigsten numismatischen Ehrenpreise weltweit. Anlässlich des Gala-Dinners 2015 wurde
Larry Chan nach über 40 Jahren erfolgreicher Geschäftstätigkeit mit dieser besonderen Auszeichnung geehrt.
Larry Chan, geboren 1943, verheiratet und Vater
von zwei Kindern, verfügt über die doppelte
Staatsbürgerschaft in Großbritannien und China
und lebt seit Anfang der 1970er Jahre in Hongkong.
Sein Interesse für Münzen und die internationale
Numismatik muss ihm wohl in die Wiege gelegt
worden sein. Als Sohn des Begründers eines Bankhauses in Hongkong, studierte Chan ab Mitte der
1960er Jahre Business Administration in England
und sammelte erste Berufserfahrungen in Montreal, Kanada, und in New York City, USA. Zurück in
Hongkong vertiefte er seine Kenntnisse in den Bereichen Vertrieb, Finanzcontrolling und Marketing

The World Money Fair Award is considered one of
most important numismatic honors worldwide.
At the 2015 gala dinner Larry Chan received this
special distinction after a successful business career of over 40 years.
Born in 1943, married and father of two children,
Larry Chan has dual citizenship of the United
Kingdom and China, and has lived in Hong Kong
since the early 1970s.
His interest in coins and international numismatics was probably inherited. As son of the founder
of a Hong Kong bank, Larry Chan studied Business
Administration in England in the mid-60s. He then
gathered early work experience in Montreal /
Canada and in New York City / U.S.A. Back in Hong
Kong, he expanded his knowledge of sales and
distribution, financial controlling, and marketing,
working at the Hong Kong Government’s Trade
Development Council and, subsequently, at globally operating companies, such as Gillette and
Peat Marwick, and a leading international stockbroker. In 1975, he finally founded his own company – International Coins (Hong Kong) Limited.

Südafrika präsent ist und die weltweite Vermarktung von Gedenkmünzenprogrammen unterstützt.
Albert M. Beck, der als Ehrenpräsident der World
Money Fair die begehrte silberne Ehrenmedaille
überreichte, fand in seiner Laudatio viele lobende
Worte für den Preisträger und „very good friend
of most of us“. Nach den vielen Ehrungen, die Chan
in seiner beruflichen Laufbahn erfahren habe,
nach seinen bemerkenswerten Erfolgen „in contributing to the numismatic market and his enormous success in marketing commemorative coins
for government mints and in promoting the Centennial Olympic Coin Programme in South East
Asia“ gebe das 40. Firmenjubiläum der International Coins (Hong Kong) Limited, so Beck, einen
wunderbaren Anlass, um die Verdienste von Larry
Chan auch mit dem renommierten World Money
Fair Award zu würdigen.

For around 40 years now, he has been at the head
of the company which since its beginnings developed to become one of the most successful distributors of coins. With branches in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines, and meanwhile
present in South Africa, as well, they support
the marketing of commemorative coin programs
worldwide.
Albert M. Beck, Honorary President of World
Money Fair, presented the coveted silver medal. In
his laudatory speech, he found many praising
words for the awardee and “very good friend of
most of us”. After the many honors Mr. Chan experienced during his professional career, after his
remarkable merits “in contributing to the numismatic market and his enormous success in marketing commemorative coins for government mints
and in promoting the Centennial Olympic Coin
Programme in South East Asia”, the 40th company
anniversary of International Coins (Hong Kong) Limited was a wonderful occasion to recognize the
achievements of Larry Chan with the renowned
World Money Fair Award.
The guests at the yearly World Money Fair gala
hailed the speech with applause which accompanied Mr. Chan on his way to the stage where he
received the award.

Like in previous years, Hotel ESTREL will be occupied entirely by the coin sector during the three
days the fair lasts.
Der erste Messetag ist traditionell der Erstausgabetag der deutschen 2 € Sondermünze. Im Rahmen dieser Messe wird diese Münze im Bundeskanzleramt feierlich vorgestellt. Auch wenn aktuell
die Politik dem Münzensammeln durch das neue
Kulturgüterschutzgesetz mächtig zugesetzt hat,
hoffen wir, dass wir bis zur Verabschiedung des
Gesetzes noch einige Verbesserungen für die
Münzbranche erkämpfen können.

issue of the German 2 € commemorative coin.
Although politicians of late have been putting
much pressure on the hobby through the new
Cultural Goods Protection Act we are still hoping
to achieve some amendments for the coin trade
until the act is passed.

Als größter Fachverband in Europa sind wir auch
in die Organisation der Messe eingebunden und
stehen jederzeit für allgemeine Hilfe und Informationen zur Verfügung.

im Namen des Verbandes der deutschen Münzenhändler möchte ich alle Aussteller und Besucher
der World Money Fair 2016 sehr herzlich begrüßen.
On behalf of the ‘Verband der deutschen
Münzenhändler’, I welcome all exhibitors and
visitors of the World Money Fair 2016.
Auch in diesem Jahr wird die World Money Fair
wieder eines der größten und wichtigsten numismatischen Ereignisse werden. Im vergangenen
Jahr wurde viel über die anstehende Novellierung des Kulturgüterschutzgesetzes diskutiert.
Dieses Thema ist längst nicht abgeschlossen und
der Verband und seine Mitstreiter arbeiten daran,
dass die zweitwichtigste Nebensache der Welt
nicht eingeschränkt wird. Wir befinden uns derzeit
auf einem guten Weg zu einer Lösung, die hoffentlich beiden Seiten gerecht werden wird. Der VddM
wird Sie nach Möglichkeit darüber auf dem Laufenden halten.
The World Money Fair will again this year be one
of the largest and most important numismatic
events. Over the past year the discussions about
the upcoming amendment of the Cultural Goods
Protection Act have continued. The issue is not
yet closed for a long time, and our association
and its campaigners are working to prevent restrictions on the second-best pastime in the
world. We are currently making good progress
toward a solution hopefully satisfying both
sides. As far as possible, the VddM will keep you
informed.
Auch in diesem Jahr haben wir auf der Messe
wieder einen Informationsstand des Verbandes.
Hier liegen Auktionskataloge und Lagerlisten
unserer Mitglieder für Sie aus. Gerne stehen sowohl ich selbst oder mein Stellvertreter, als auch

Eigentlich kann ich das Vorwort vom Vorjahr unverändert wiederholen, denn die Mitglieder der
FENAP werden sich auch diesmal auf Einladung
der World Money Fair in Berlin treffen, wofür wir
den Gastgebern wieder herzlich danken.
Actually, I could reproduce last year‘s words of
welcome unchanged as the members of FENAP
will again meet in Berlin on invitation of the
World Money Fair, for which we wish to thank
our hosts.
Wiederholen auch deshalb, weil sich die Ministerin
für Kultur und Medien mit ihrem Team durchgesetzt zu haben scheint, ein deutsches nationalistisches Kulturgutschutzgesetz der Regierung und
dem Bundestag vorzulegen. Wenn diese Veranstaltung stattfindet, dann wird das Gesetz wohl
den Bundestag passiert haben und ob der Bundesrat noch eine Gegenwehr zeigt, ist nicht vorherzusehen. Der Normenkontrollausschuss hat
Anfang November eine vernichtende Stellungnahme abgegeben, da die Gesetzesverfasser mit
völlig falschen Zahlen operiert haben, was diese
aber nicht hinderte den Verbänden des Handels
vorzuwerfen, dass sie kein verlässliches Zahlenmaterial geliefert hätten. Diese Aussage ist bewusst falsch, da wir gar keine entsprechenden
Fragen erhalten haben.

team seem to have gotten their way and will present the Federal Government and the Bundestag
with a bill for a German nationalist cultural good
protection act. When this event takes place, the
bill will probably have been passed by the Bundestag, and it is not foreseeable whether the Bundesrat will show any resistance to it. In early November,
the National Regulatory Control Council submitted a devastating report because those who drew
up the bill operated with incorrect figures – which
did not prevent them from accusing the trade associations of not having provided reliable figures.
This is a deliberately false statement as we never
even received any corresponding requests.

Die Vielzahl und Vielfalt der Münzen, die jedes
Jahr auf der World Money Fair ausgestellt werden,

und Metallen. Zu den sehr gelungenen Kreationen

The numerous coins on display at the annual
World Money Fair clearly show how the coin business continues to move forward. We have all
kinds of coins such as concave coins, QR coins,
coins with inclusions and coins of all possible
shapes and metals. A very creative coin, is the
cylindrical coin from Poland, recognized as the
most innovative coin by the MDC in its most recent
coin competition.
Hier findet in einer wettbewerbsfreien Umgebung ein partnerschaftlicher Austausch von Ideen
und Wissen zwischen den staatlichen Münzprägestätten und dem MDC-Vertriebsnetzwerk statt,

Zweimal machte Südkorea bisher mit prachtvollen
Gedenkmünzen zu sportlichen internationalen
Großveranstaltungen auf sich aufmerksam. Zum
ersten Mal 1988, als Seoul Gastgeber der XXIV.
Olympischen Sommerspiele war und 2002 als die
Republik auf dem südlichen Teil der Koreanischen
Halbinsel in Ostasien zusammen mit Japan die
FIFA-Fußballweltmeisterschaft durchführen durfte.
South Korea already twice has drawn the attention of the world with issues of exquisite collector
coins commemorating international sports events.
First in 1988 when Seoul hosted the XXIV Summer Olympic Games and again in 2002 when the
Republic of Korea organized the FIFA Football
World Championship in East Asia together with
Japan.
Die 32 offiziellen Olympiamünzen Seoul 1988 gehören zu den künstlerisch schönsten und prägetechnisch hervorragendsten Münzen in der Olympiasammlung. Damals entwickelte sich ein starkes Sammlerbewusstsein in den asiatischen
Staaten. Allein aus dem Verkauf der Olympiamünzen Seoul 1988 wurden 135.235 Millionen
Won (rund 115 Mio US $) generiert, die zur Finanzierung der Spiele und vor allem zur Sportförderung verwendet wurden. Pyeongchang (Südkorea) erhielt vom IOC den Zuschlag für die Durchführung der XXIII. Olympischen Winterspiele 2018.
Neue Olympiagedenkmünzen werden die aufstrebende Wirtschaftsmacht, den ostasiatischen
„Tigerstaat“, erneut ins Rampenlicht der Münzensammler führen.
The 32 official Seoul 1988 Olympic coins are
among the artistically finest and technically most
outstanding coins of the Olympic collection. Back
then, a strong collecting spirit developed in the
countries of Asia. The sale of Seoul 1988 Olympic
coins alone generated a total of 135,235 million
won (around 115 million US$), used to finance
the games and for the most part invested in general promotion of sports. Pyeongchang (South Korea) was elected to host the XXIII Olympic Winter
Games in 2018. The issuing of new Olympic coins
will put the economically powerful East Asian Tiger state again into the limelight of numismatists.

Das war nicht immer so. Der südliche Teil der koreanischen Halbinsel wurde im Koreakrieg (1950 –
1953) völlig zerstört. In der Zwischenzeit hat sich
das 50-Mio-Volk zu einem bedeutenden Industriestaat entwickelt. Samsung ist die größte Firma
Südkoreas und liegt weltweit auf Platz 20.
Südkorea hat ein kulturbewusstes gastfreundliches Volk, das die Traditionen pflegt. Bildung und
Schönheit haben einen hohen Stellenwert. Die
Südkoreaner sind stolz auf ihre Errungenschaften. Sie sind selbstbewusst und oft beleidigt,
wenn ihnen jemand Trinkgeld anbietet, weil
Trinkgeld dort als Almosen für Arme angesehen
wird. Die Sitten werden gepflegt und der Aberglaube nimmt einen breiten Raum ein. Jeder Koreaner kennt seine Blutgruppe. So wie man in
Europa nach dem Sternzeichen fragt, fragt man in
Südkorea nach der Blutgruppe, weil die Blutgruppe bei der Partnerwahl eine Rolle spielt. Wie in Japan ist die Zahl „4“ auch in Südkorea eine Unglückszahl. In vielen Gebäudekomplexen wie Hotel
wird die Zahl „4“ übersprungen und jeder Südkoreaner vermeidet es, mit roter Farbe zu schreiben.

It has not always been like that. The southern part
of the Korean peninsula was completely destroyed in the Korean War (1950- 1953). Since then, the
50-million nation has developed to become an
important industrial state. The largest company
of South Korea is Samsung, ranking 20th on a global scale.
The people of South Korea are hospitable, culturally aware and respectful of their traditions. Education and beauty are highly valued. South Koreans are proud of their achievements and self-confident. Koreans may even feel insulted when
offered a tip, as tips are seen as handouts to the
poor. Traditional customs and beliefs are alive,
superstition widely spread. All Koreans knows
their blood group. Like Europeans ask each other
for their zodiac sign, people in Korea will ask for
one's blood type, as the blood type is considered
important to find a compatible partner. Just like
in Japan the number 4 is unlucky. In many buildings like hotels 4 is skipped. When writing all
Koreans will avoid using red ink.

coins sold to Europe have always fulfilled the expectations of collectors, both in terms of quality

metals, in any alloys and specifications. Founded
in 1968, the corporation was commissioned by
the Republic of Korea in 1970 to produce coin
blanks for the national currency coinage. That
was the signal and start for the development of
blanks and related services for the coin industry
abroad. Already three years later (1973) the first
blanks were delivered to Taiwan. Meanwhile
POONGSAN provides coin blanks to customers in
60 countries worldwide. They were also commissioned to produce coin blanks for euro coins.

der ersten massenmedialen Trägermedien, die ein Dokument, ja auch

zeigt eine Republik?

einer emotional stabilen Kindheit, die
sich in positiven Weltbildern und
fröhlichen Zeichnungen ausdrückt.

reads like a compendium of Austrian
national treasures that can be used to

SPANISH ROYAL MINT (FNMT-RCM)
First and foremost, may I say that it is an honour for the Spanish
Royal Mint to take part in the World Money Fair once more. This
year, we are pleased to present a number of exciting products
which will not only promote our business but will undoubtedly
also arouse the attention of coin collectors everywhere.
As at previous fairs, we shall be showing our latest issues for
the current year, in addition to giving visitors a preview of our
collector coin programme for 2016.
Last November saw the launching of the last five coins belonging
to the “Spanish World Heritage Cities” series, a collection of
coins dedicated to the 15 Spanish Cities included by UNESCO in
the World Heritage List.
Moreover, November was an important month for us in that

and the corporate image designed by Joan Miró in 1983 for Spanish

A landmark event last year was the issuance of our first coloured
coin. For 2016, we have set ourselves a new challenge, consisting
in producing our first square coloured coins, dedicated to the

500 Anniversary of Hieronymus Bosch. The coins will reproduce
one of his most celebrated works of art: “The Garden of Earthly
Delights”, housed in the Prado Museum.
In the area of sports, where we have a longstanding tradition of
lending our support, we shall issue two proof coins, one in silver
and one in gold, dedicated to the Spanish team participating in the
next Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

Finally, for the 6 issue in the “Jewels of Numismatics” series, we
shall replicate ancient Phoenician and Iberian coins. These will be
the last coins in these series.

das Sammelgebiet dabei gespannt. Ein natürlicher Schwerpunkt liegt auf Medaillen aus Berlin
und Brandenburg, die preußische Geschichte
durch die Darstellung von Personen, Gebäuden
und Ereignissen illustrieren. Neben der reichen
Sammlung an Medaillen besitzt das Berliner
Münzkabinett aber auch eine große Anzahl an Modellen für Medaillen. Diese Modelle aus Holz, Stein
oder auch Wachs können einen interessanten Einblick in die Entwurfsarbeit und den Herstellungsprozess dieser Gattung geben.
The Coin Cabinet of the Berlin State Museums is
known as one of the most important coin collection worldwide. That it is also a place for collecting and exhibiting medals is not so well known.
The collection comprises medals from the beginning of medal art in the Renaissance to our days.
A main focus of the collection is, of course, medals from Berlin and Brandenburg which illustrate
Prussian history through the depiction of historical figures, buildings and events. Besides a rich
assemblage of medals the Münzkabinett owns
also a large number of models for medals. These
models made of wood, stone or beeswax allow
impressive insights into the design and production process of medals.

Die junge adlige Cecilia Gonzaga, die Pisanello
auf der Vorderseite der Medaille porträtiert, war
eine Rebellin ihrer Zeit. Sie widersetzte sich den
politisch motivierten Heiratsplänen ihres Vaters
und trat in ein Kloster ein. Hierauf spielt Pisanello
wohl mit seinem Rückseitenmotiv an: Das Einhorn wurde als Symbol für Keuschheit angesehen, da es der Legende nach nur von einer Jungfrau gebändigt werden konnte.
Cecilia Gonzaga, a young aristocratic lady, whose
portrait Pisanello shows on the obverse of the
medal, was a rebel of her time. She defied the
plans of her father to marry her against her will
for political reasons and joined a convent. Pisanello refers to this with the motif on the reverse of

Die offizielle Sondermünze
Die Schweiz bestehe nicht nur aus Bergen, wurde seinerzeit das Münzbild des Goldvrenelis mit
den Berggipfeln im Hintergrund kritisiert. Sicher
aber ist, dass man in der Schweiz um die Berge
nicht herumkommt. Die Alpen bilden auf der
Nord-Süd-Achse eine gewaltige Barriere. Mit der
Eröffnung des Gotthard-Scheiteltunnels entstand
1882 erstmals eine leistungsfähige Bahnverbindung durch die Alpen. 133 Jahre später, nach
einer Bauzeit von 17 Jahren, wird nun im Juni
dieses Jahres der Gotthard-Basistunnel feierlich
eröffnet und Mitte Dezember dem fahrplanmässigen Betrieb übergeben. Zur Einweihung des
Jahrhundertbauwerks erscheint eine Sondermünze aus Silber. Auch beim Edelweiss ist der Bezug
zu den Bergen gegeben. Die seltene, im Hochgebirge heimische Blume gilt als Symbol der Alpen.
Sie ziert die erste Bimetallmünze der neuen Serie «FLORA ALPINA». Eine weitere Silbermünze
thematisiert das Jubiläum des Schweizerischen
Roten Kreuzes. Seit 150 Jahren unterstützt das auf
Henry Dunant zurückgehende und bedeutendste
Hilfswerk unseres Landes Menschen im In- und
Ausland. Diese drei Prägungen gelangten am
28. Januar 2016 zur Ausgabe.
There‘s more to Switzerland than just mountains,
this was the criticism aimed at the time at the
gold Vreneli which featured mountain peaks in
the background. But one thing is for certain: in
Switzerland you cannot avoid the mountains.
The Alps form a huge barrier on the north-south
axis. The opening of the Gotthard summit tunnel
in 1882 produced the first efficient rail connection through the Alps. 133 years later, after a
period of construction of 17 years, the Gotthard
base tunnel will be inaugurated in June this year
and scheduled services will start operating in
mid-December. To commemorate the inauguration of the construction project of the century, a
silver coin was issued. The edelweiss also represents a connection to the mountains. This rare
flower native to high mountain ranges is regarded as a symbol of the Alps. It decorates the first
bimetallic coin in the new FLORA ALPINA series.
Another silver coin celebrates the anniversary of
the Swiss Red Cross. For 150 years, the biggest
relief organisation in Switzerland, which dates
back to Henry Dunant, has been providing support to people at home and abroad. These three
coins were issued on 28 January 2016.
Gottardo 2016
In der Schweiz gibt es kaum eine Ortschaft oder
ein Stadtquartier ohne Blasmusik. Das Ende des
18. Jahrhunderts im militärischen Umfeld entstandene Blasmusikwesen erreichte schon früh
den zivilen Bereich und etablierte sich rasch. Die
Blasmusik ist Thema der dritten Silbermünze des
Jahres und erscheint rechtzeitig zum Eidgenössischen Musikfest in Montreux. Abgerundet wird
das diesjährige Ausgabeprogramm
durch eine weitere Sondermünze
zur Eröffnung des Gotthard-Basistunnels, diesmal in Gold. Sie bildet
zusammen mit der Silbermünze eine
Einheit. Ausgabetag dieser Münzen
ist der 26. Mai 2016.
Virtually every village and city neighbourhood in
Switzerland has a brass band. Brass band music,
which came into existence at the end of the 18th
century in the military environment, spread to the
domain of ordinary citizens early on and quickly
became established. Brass bands are the theme of
the third silver coin of the year which will appear
in time for the Federal Music Festival in Montreux.
This year‘s coin programme will be
completed with another commemorative coin for the opening of the
Gotthard Base Tunnel, but this time
in gold. It forms a set with the silver
coin. The issue date for these coins is
26 May 2016.

Münzprägung aus.
Thrace – modern Bulgaria, Northern Greece, and
European Turkey – is an ancient region distinguished by 800 years of interesting coinage which
includes a rich variety of types.
Anlass für die Ausstellung im Bode-Museum ist
die Bearbeitung der thrakischen Münzen im Besitz
des Münzkabinetts der Staatlichen Museen zu
Berlin (www.smb.museum/ikmk). Sie ist verbunden mit der Veröffentlichung in einem sammlungsübergreifenden Internet-Portal, das im Rahmen eines DFG-Projektes gemeinsam mit der
Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften entwickelt wurde.
Ausstellung und Portal präsentieren thrakische
Münzen (www.corpus-nummorum.eu) von der
Archaik bis in die römische Zeit (ca. 530 v. Chr.
– 268 n. Chr.), die von griechischen Koloniestädten, thrakischen Stämmen, lokalen Dynasten sowie römischen Provinzverwaltern herausgegeben
wurden. Die Münzbilder geben einerseits Aufschluss über das Selbstverständnis der in dieser
Region zusammenlebenden unterschiedlichen
Bevölkerungsgruppen und andererseits über das

The exhibition in the Bode-Museum is based on a
joint project of the Berlin Brandenburg Academy
of Sciences and Humanities and the Coin Cabinet
Berlin funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for three
years. In this Project a numismatic web portal for
Thracian coins found in museums and private collections has been created.
In the exhibition and in the portal (www.corpusnummorum.eu) Thracian coins from the archaic
to the Roman period (c. 530 BC – 268 AD) are displayed that were minted by Greek colonies, indigenous tribes, local dynasties and Roman provincial administrators. The motifs of the coins show
on the one side the self-concept of the people
living together in this area and on the other side
they demonstrate the image of themselves they
want to send to other places. The themes of the
Thracian coins can so enrich our historical know
ledge of the region and sometimes they illustrate
even topographic situations. Of great importance

Russland, das sind die Themen der Künker BerlinAuktion, die am 4. Februar 2016 im Estrel-Hotel
stattfinden wird. Angeboten werden ganz besondere Raritäten.
Es sind 912 Lose, die in der 271. Auktion von Künker zum Ausruf kommen. Jedes einzelne Stück ist

Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist das teuerste Stück der

Every single item is hand-picked and is characterized either by its rarity, its provenience, its historical
significance or its quality. And sometimes a specimen even represents all of these characteristics.
A splendid example is the most expensive piece
of the auction. It’s a 5 franc pattern of year ten
after the storming of the Bastille. It’s rare because
it’s the only known specimen in private hands.

Es stammt aus einer exklusiven Quelle, nämlich aus
der Sammlung von Louis II., Fürst von Monaco. Es ist
historisch bedeutend, weil es das numismatische
Zeugnis dafür ist, dass die Kaiserherrschaft Napoleons auf den verwaltungstechnischen Strukturen
basiert, die aus der Französischen Revolution erwachsen sind. Und dann ist es natürlich noch perfekt erhalten. Die Schätzung für diese numismatische Ikone der frühen Herrschaft Napoleons beträgt 125.000 Euro. Viel Geld, doch lassen Sie sich
davon nicht abschrecken. Andere Raritäten lassen
sich in der Berlin Auktion auch mit Schätzungen im
dreistelligen Bereich finden.
Ein Beispiel dafür ist eine unsignierte Silbermedaille von 1900, die an den deutschen Feldzug nach
China gegen die so genannten „Boxer“ erinnert.
Auch dieses Stück ist selten und historisch bedeutend: Es erinnert an eines der bekanntesten Ereignisse der unrühmlichen deutschen Kolonialgeschichte. Und natürlich ist es perfekt erhalten. Geschätzt ist diese Rarität mit 600 Euro, auch wenn
zu erwarten ist, dass der Zuschlag dafür etwas höher ausfallen wird. Es ist also wieder für jeden etwas dabei in der kommenden Künker-Auktion.
Vor allem Sammler von Altdeutschland können
sich auf prachtvoll erhaltene Taler und außergewöhnlich seltene Mehrfachdukaten freuen.
Its pedigree is exclusive, because it stems from
the collection of Louis II, prince of Monaco. The
coin is historically important, because it represents numismatic evidence of the administrative
structures of Napoleon’s empire, which originated in the French Revolution. And last but not
least, the coin is in perfect condition. The appraisal for this icon of the early rule of Napoleon is
125.000 euros. That’s a lot of money, but don’t let
it scare you. The Berlin auction will offer many rarities estimated in the three digit region.
One example is an unsigned silver medal from
1900. It commemorates the German campaign to
China to fight the so called “Boxers”. This piece is
rare and also historically important: it recalls one
of the most famous incidents of the inglorious
German colonial history. Of course the medal is in
perfect condition. This rarity is estimated at 600
euros, but the final hammer price is expected to
be higher. The auction will hold pieces for every
body.
Especially collectors of pre-1871 Germany will be
happy to find many gorgeous talers and exceptionally rare multiple ducats. This time the emphasis
is placed on Prussia and Saxony. But there will be
also other regions pieces will be called for, which
have not been seen on the market in quite a time.

auctioned off. They will be followed by 60 lots

Stücke zum Ausruf, wie man sie schon lange nicht
mehr auf dem Markt gesehen hat. Knapp 400 Lose Altdeutschland werden versteigert. Es folgen
gut 60 Lose aus dem Römischen Reich. Und auch
hier gibt es zahlreiche Seltenheiten, von denen
viele Sammler träumen. Und natürlich dürfen wir
an dieser Stelle nicht vergessen zu erwähnen,
dass auch das Angebot an österreichischen Standesherren traumhaft ist. Von den Fürsten zu Auersberg bis zu den Grafen von Schlick, die Auswahl ist reichhaltig, die angebotenen Stücke selten und deren Erhaltung durchwegs vorzüglich.
Muss man es noch erwähnen, dass auch für den
Sammler ausländischer Münzen viel geboten
wird? Wieder einmal gibt es aus den nordischen
Königreichen Dänemark, Norwegen und Schweden zahlreiche interessante Stücke. Aber vor allem Frankreich hat viel zu bieten.
Auch die Sammler von US-Münzen sollten den
Katalog aufmerksam durchblättern. Gut 30 Lose
werden angeboten, darunter Raritäten wie ein
amerikanisches Token oder zahlreiche Prägungen
aus den Goldfeldern von Kalifornien.
Und erst damit kommen wir zu den russischen
Münzen, unter denen sich natürlich ebenfalls
zahlreiche Raritäten finden. Wir beschränken uns

Elizabeth from 1757 from St. Petersburg and a
gold medal commemorating the crowning of Czar
Paul I in Moscow, also very rare.

Münzen sind Dokumente der Geschichte, Brücken zu unserer Vergangenheit. Sie ermöglichen

Coins are documents of history, bridges to our
past. They give us the direct mental and visual
link to historical, political and social events and to
major historical sports events such as Olympiads.
Olympia in der Antike
Münzen, die mit Olympia in Verbindung gebracht
werden können, gab es schon in der Antike. Dabei
muss man säuberlich drei verschiedene Arten
unterscheiden.
Zunächst gibt es natürlich die Münzen von Olympia selbst. Sie zeigen den prachtvollen Kopf des
Olympischen Zeus oder seiner Gattin Hera auf der
Vorderseite.
Die Festlichkeiten waren es, die Zehntausende von
Gästen ins Heiligtum von Olympia zogen. Und diese Gäste mussten mit Münzen versorgt werden.
Dann gibt es äußerst seltene Münzen, die direkt
auf einen Sieg bei den olympischen Spielen hinweisen. Griechische Münzen sind keine Gedenkmünzen, sondern wollen das ewig Gültige einfangen. Aber immerhin, manche Herrscher hielten es
für opportun im Münzbild zu zeigen, dass sie ein
Günstling des Zeus waren.
Eine dritte Kategorie von Olympiamünzen sind die Stücke, auf denen nicht
ein einzelner Sieg verherrlicht wird,
sondern die grundsätzliche Sieghaftigkeit einer Stadt.
Olympia of the Ancient era
Coins that could be associated with Olympia date
back to the Ancient era. Here it is necessary to make
a clear distinction between three different kinds.
First there are, of course, the coins of Olympia
themselves. They portray the magnificent head of
the Olympian Zeus or his wife Hera on the obverse.
It was these celebrations that attracted tens of
thousands of guests to the shrine of Olympia.
And these guests had to be provided with coins.
Then there are extremely rare coins that directly
referred to a victory at the Olympic Games. Greek
coins are not commemorative coins but are intended to capture the eternally valid. Even so, some
rulers considered in opportune to have their
image on a coin to show that they were a favourite of Zeus.

Dank der Begeisterung und Vision des französischen Adeligen, des Pädagogen, Historikers und
Sportfunktionärs
Baron Pierre de Coubertin
(1863 – 1937) wurde die Wiederaufnahme Olympischer Wettkämpfe 1896 möglich. Wieso Wiederaufnahme? Von 776 v. Chr. bis 395 n. Chr. fanden
in der griechische Stadt Olympia 1171 Jahre lang
alle vier Jahre zu Ehren Zeus Wettkämpfe statt.
Zu Hunderten kamen die Besucher aus den benachbarten Städten und Stadtstaaten. Der Besuch
Olympias war gleichzeitig eine Wallfahrt zu seinem heiligsten Ort. Im 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. wurde die Stadt Olympia von Naturgewalten zerstört.
1875 begannen unter der Leitung des deutschen
Archäologen Ernst Curtius (1814 – 1896) umfassende Ausgrabungen. Baron Pierre de Coubertin
las alle Berichte über die Ausgrabungen, war begeistert und beschloss, die Ideale und den Geist
Olympischer Spiele zu wecken und nach dem Vorbild der Olympiaden in der Antike, Olympische
Wettkämpfe wieder durchzuführen. 1894 wurde
das Olympische Komitee gegründet und zwei Jahre später fanden vom 6. bis 15. April 1896 in
Athen die ersten Olympischen Spiele der Neuzeit
statt. Bis allerdings die ersten offiziellen Olympiamünzen erschienen, vergingen 56 Jahre. Zur XV.
Sommerolympiade in Helsinki 1952 wurden die
ersten Olympiamünzen geprägt. Das war die Geburtsstunde der modernen Olympia-Gedenkmünze.
Offizielle Olympiamünze oder
Sympathieausgabe
Wenn Sie eine Münze entdecken, die mit den fünf
Olympischen Ringen auf eine Olympiade hinweist,
dann haben Sie eine Olympiamünze in der Hand.
Jedoch, nicht jede Münze, die auf eine Olympiade
hinweist, ist eine offizielle Olympiamünze.
Man unterscheidet zwei Kategorien
a) Vom Internationalen Olympischen Komitee
(IOC) bewilligte Münzen, Münzen, die vom
Veranstalter der Olympischen Spiele herausgegeben werden.

glorifying an individual victory, but the fundamental victoriousness of a city.
Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the
modern Olympic Games
It was thanks to the enthusiasm and vision of the
French aristocrat, the educator, historian and
sports official, Baron Pierre de Coubertin
(1863 – 1937), that made the resumption of Olympic contests possible in 1896. Why resumption?
Contests took place for 1171 years in the Greek
city of Olympia every four years in honour of Zeus,
from 776 B.C. to 395 A.D.
The visitors came in their hundreds from the neighbouring cities and city states. Visiting Olympia
was at the same time a pilgrimage to this most
sacred place. The city of Olympia was destroyed by
the forces of nature in the 4th century A.D.
Extensive excavations began in 1875 under the
supervision of the German archaeologist Ernst
Curtius (1814 – 1896). Baron Pierre de Coubertin
read all the reports on the excavations, they captured his imagination and he decided to revive
the ideals and the spirit of the Olympic Games
and to hold Olympic contests again modelled on
the Olympiads of Ancient Greece. The Olympic
Committee was founded in 1894 and two years
later the first Olympic Games of the modern era
took place in Athens from 6th to 15th April 1896.
However, it was to be 56 years before the first
Olympic coins were minted. The first Olympic coins were struck for the XV Olympiad in Helsinki in
1952. This marked the beginning of the modern
Olympic commemorative coin.
Official Olympic coin or Sympathy Edition
If you find coins that make reference to an Olympiad with the five Olympic rings, you are holding
an Olympic coin. However, not every coin that indicates an Olympiad is an official Olympic coin.
There are two different categories:
a) Coins approved by the International Olympic
Committee, coins that are issued by the hosts
of Olympic Games.

b) Münzen, die von anderen Staaten (Nichtveranstalter) zu den jeweiligen Olympiaden herausgegeben werden. Man spricht hier von sogenannten Sympathiemünzen. Natürlich sind
auch diese offiziell rechtliche Zahlungsmittel
(legal tender). Es gibt bei den Sympathiemünzen drei Gruppen: Münzen mit den Olympischen Ringen, Münzen mit dem Logo des Nationalen Olympischen Komitees und Münzen
ohne Ringe und Logos, jedoch mit dem bildlichen oder schriftlichen Hinweis auf Olympiaden.
Von Helsinki (1952) bis Rio (2016) sind insgesamt
992 offizielle Olympiamünzen (inkl. Materialvarianten, Proben und Prägeversionen) herausgegeben worden. Die Anzahl der Sympathieausgaben dürfte bei rund 2000 liegen.
Gedenkmünzen einst und jetzt
Der entscheidende Unterschied zwischen den Gedenkmünzen von früher und heute liegt in den
grundlegend veränderten Voraussetzungen, was
die Ausgabe, den Zweck und die Vorstellung betrifft. Während frühere Gedenkmünzen oder
-medaillen mit dem Zweck geprägt wurden, an
bestimmte Personen und Ereignisse zu erinnern
und diese Gepräge dann als historisches Kulturgut in Münzkabinetten oder in Sammlungen von
Numismatikern als Zeugen der Geschichte aufbewahrt wurden, liegen der Gedenkmünzenausgaben von heute weltweit neben den kulturellen
und historischen auch wirtschaftliche Überlegungen zugrunde. Die Olympiamünzen machen hier
keine Ausnahme. Die Zielvorgabe heißt auch
hier: 00Erwirtschaftung eines Prägegewinns zur
Mitfinanzierung von Olympiaden. Die Absicht ist
sinnvoll und ehrbar, denn durch den Verkauf von
Olympiamünzen profitiert nicht nur der Veranstalter von Olympiaden, sondern – wie bereits erwähnt – auch die Sportförderung in jenen Ländern, wo Olympiamünzen gekauft werden.
Der Verkauf von Olympiamünzen war vor allem in
den achtziger und neunziger Jahren lukrativ. Es
gab Zeiten, da standen Einnahmen aus Gedenkmünzverkäufen für Olympiaden hinter den Einnahmen für TV-Übertragungen an zweiter Stelle.

b) Coins that are issued by other countries (nonhosts) for a specific Olympiad. These are
known as sympathy editions. Naturally, these
are also legal tender. There are three groups of
sympathy editions: coins with the Olympic
rings, coins with the logo of the National
Olympic Committee and coins without rings
and logos but with a pictorial or written reference to Olympiads.
A total of 992 official Olympic coins (including different kinds of material, proofs and mint versions) have been issued from Helsinki (1952) to Rio
(2016). The number of sympathy editions is probably around 2000.
Commemorative coins – then and now
The decisive difference between the commemorative coins of earlier times and the present lies in
the fundamental change in the prerequisites for
their issue, purpose and presentation. Whereas
earlier commemorative coins or medals were
minted with the purpose of commemorating specific persons and events and this mintage was
kept as an object of cultural value in coin cabinets
or in the collections of numismatists as testimony
to history, the commemorative coins issued today
also take economic factors in addition to cultural
and historical ones into consideration worldwide.
The Olympic coins are no exception. Here, too, the
objective is: Making a profit from minting the coins to contribute to financing Olympiads. The intention makes sense and is worthy as not only the
hosts of Olympiads profit from the sale of Olympic coins but, as already mentioned, also the promotion of sport in those countries where Olympic
coins are purchased.
The sale of Olympic coins was lucrative particular
in the eighties and nineties. There were times
when the revenue from sales of commemorative
coins for Olympiads were only second to the revenue from TV coverages.

Ausgabe von Olympiamünzen,
eine zusätzliche Finanzierungsquelle zu schaffen. Die finanzielle Erfolgsstory mit der Ausgabe von Olympiamünzen setzte sich in der Folge fort.

Eine Sonderstellung nimmt das 1992 lancierte
und 1996 beendete, vom IOC vermarktete Sonderprogramm „100 Jahre Olympische Bewegung
1896-1996“ (Katalog AMB 585-AMB 599), das mit
Münzen der fünf Länder Kanada (1992), Australien (1993), Frankreich (1994), Österreich (1995)
und Griechenland (1996) bestritten wurde. Diese
Münzen gehören auch in die Olympia-Münzensammlungen.
Einzelmünzen und Münzenprogramme
Von 1952 (Helsinki) bis zur Winterolympiade
1972 in Tokyo gab es nur einzelne Olympiaausgaben. Für die Sommerolympiade 1972 in München
wurden erstmals 24 Münzen als Olympiasammlung geprägt. Kanada machte sich die bisherigen
Erfahrungen zunutze und setzte zur Vermarktung
ihrer 29 Olympiamünzen für die Sommerspiele
in Montreal 1976 weltweite Marketing-Strategien ein. Neben den prägefrischen Ausgaben waren vor allem die für den Sammler geprägten PPAusgaben in einer Sammelkassette beliebt.

This was the beginning and prelude to realising
the idea of creating an additional source of revenue by issuing Olympic coins. The financial success story of issuing Olympic coins continued in
the time that followed.
Olympic coins from 1952 to 2016
12 hosts of winter Olympiads and 15 summer
Olympiads have issued Olympic coins since 1952
(Helsinki). See table: Olympic coins since 1952.
The IOC marketed the special programme launched in 1992 and ended in 1996 '100 years of the
Olympic Movement 1896-1996' (Catalogue AMB
585-AMB 599). The programme contained coins
from the five countries Canada (1992), Australia
(1993), France (1994), Austria (1995) and Greece
(1996). These coins also belong in collections of
Olympic coins.
Individual coins and coin programmes
There were only individual issues of Olympic coins between 1952 (Helsinki) and the winter Olympiad in Tokyo in 1972. 24 coins were minted as an
Olympic collection for the first time for the 1972
summer Olympiad in Munich. Canada took ad-

der Gesamtzahl von 127 Ausgaben war der
Sammler eindeutig überfordert.

in 1976. Apart from the uncirculated issues, particularly the proof issues in a collector's cassette
were popular with collectors.
The successful campaign of the Royal Canadian
Mint to market Olympic coins on collector's editions set an example for the Olympiads that followed. Clearly structured programmes, collector's
editions in cases and cassettes enhanced the coin
cabinets of Olympic coin collectors. Until the Beijing summer Olympiad in 2008 the collectors
bought the Olympic coins either in the mint version or proof. The collections were manageable
and financially viable. A lot changed with the
commemorative coins issued for the winter
Games in Vancouver in 2010. Bullion coins with
the Olympia emblem were also issued for the first
time in addition to the numismatic coins. With a
total of 127 coins the collector was clearly unable
to cope.
Basis-Programm
Basis programme
Um die Sammler nicht zu entmutigen, schlug ich
als Mitglied und Experte der IOC-Sammlerkommission dem Sammler von Olympiamünzen vor,
sich für eine repräsentative Auswahl, zu einem so
genannten Basis-Programm, zu entscheiden. Das
war ein erfolgreicher und sinnvoller Vorschlag,
denn mit der Sommerolympiade in London (2012)
folgten sogar 149 Olympia-Ausgaben in verschiedenen Prägeversionen. Bei den Olympiamünzen
SOTSCHI 2014 und RIO 2016 war der Vorschlag
für eine Basis-Auswahl nicht mehr nötig. Die beiden Veranstalter setzten die frühere Ausgabenphilosophie mit einer begrenzten Menge Olympiamünzen fort.
In order not to discourage the collector, I, as a
member and expert of the IOC Collectors' Commission, proposed to collectors of Olympic coins
that they decide on a representative selection, on
what is known as a basis programme. This was a
successful and sensible proposal as the summer
Olympiad in London (2012) gave rise to as many
as 149 Olympia issues in various mint versions.
This proposal of a basis selection was no longer
necessary in the case of the Olympic coins SOCHI
2014 and RIO 2016. The two host cities continued
the earlier issue philosophy with a limited number of Olympic coins.

Der Blick in die Währungsgeschichte zeigt, dass
die Menschen, wann immer sie die Wahl hatten,
Edelmetalle als Geld verwendet haben. Das ist
nicht überraschend. Denn das Edelmetall hat die
physischen Eigenschaften, die ein Medium haben muss, damit es die Geldfunktionen erfüllen
kann. Es ist knapp, homogen, haltbar, teilbar,
prägbar, transportabel und wertgeschätzt, und
es hat auch einen relativ hohen Wert pro Gewichtseinheit. Gold erfüllt all diese Anforderungen geradezu perfekt, und das ist auch der
Grund, warum sich Gold im Wettbewerb um die
Geldfunktion immer wieder durchgesetzt hat.
Gold ist ein Jahrtausend erprobtes Geld, ein universal akzeptiertes Tauschmittel.
A look into monetary history shows that people,
when given freedom of choice, opted for precious
metals as money. This doesn’t come as a surprise.
Precious metals have the physical properties a
medium must have to serve as legal tender: They
are scarce, homogenous, durable, divisible, mintable and transportable. They are held in high esteem and represent considerable value per unit of
weight. Gold fulfils these re-quirements par excellence, and this is why it has always been peoples’ first choice. Gold has proven its merits as
money for millennia; it is the ultimate means of
payment.
Dass das Gold heutzutage im Tagesgeschäft
durch ungedecktes Fiat-Geld ersetzt worden ist,
hat politische Gründe. Regierungen wollen eine
Geldart, deren Wert sich nach politischer Willkür
verändern lässt, um beispielsweise die Konjunktur
zu beeinflussen oder Umverteilungen zu finanzieren. Goldgeld steht dem im Wege. Nicht jedoch
das sogenannte staatliche Fiat-Geld: Es ist Geld,
das per Kreditvergabe geschaffen wird, ohne
dass dafür „echte Ersparnisse“ vorhanden wären.
Das Fiat-Geld leidet allerdings unter ökonomischen und ethischen Defekten. Es ist chronisch
inflationär, sorgt für eine unsoziale Verteilung
von Einkommen und Vermögen, zettelt Boomund-Bust-Zyklen an und treibt die Verschuldung
der Volkswirtschaften immer weiter in die Höhe.
Spätestens seit der internationalen Finanz- und
Wirtschaftskrise 2007 / 2008 treibt viele Sparer
die Sorge um, ihre in Fiat-Geld denominierten Ersparnisse könnten entwertet werden. Das hat die
Suche nach „gutem“ Geld ermutigt. Der prominenteste unter den neuen Wettbewerbern ist die
Cyber-Einheit Bitcoin. Der Bitcoin ist ein digitales
Tauschmittel, dessen Produktion – anders als
beim Fiat-Geld – keiner zentralen Instanz unterliegt. Die Vermehrung der Bitcoin-Menge ist dem
Zusammenschluss von Rechnerkapazitäten über
das Internet überantwortet. Kryptographische
Technik stellt sicher, dass nur der Bitcoin-Eigentümer seinen Bitcoin überträgt, dass ein Bitcoin
nicht mehrfach ausgegeben werden kann.
More recently, gold has been replaced by the
state’s unredeemable fiat money – for reasons
rather more political than economic. Governments prefer money whose value can be altered
at will—say, to influence overall demand and redistribute income. Gold money stands in the way
of such aims. Fiat money doesn’t. On the contrary,
fiat money can be created out of thin air by gran
ting credit that is not backed by real sav-ings.
However, fiat money has its economic and ethical
drawbacks. It is inflationary, widens the gap between poor and rich, triggers boom-and-bust cycles, and compounds the economy’s debt burden.
In the wake of the most recent financial and economic crisis in 2007/2008, many people are concerned that their savings, mostly invested in fiat-denominated bank accounts and bonds, could
be devaluated. This has prompted a search for
'good' money. The most prominent candidate in
the running is the virtual unit bitcoin. It is a digital
currency generated by decentralised, internet-based computers rather than a central authority. A cryptographic technique ensures that
only the bitcoin's owner can make a transaction
with his bitcoin so that the same bitcoin cannot
be used to make multiple payments.
Bitcoin transactions are confirmed (validated) by a
decentralised consensus system that uses a blockchain; essentially a digital account statement
for transactions among computers. This ledger

Blockchain werden quasi revolutionäre Entwicklungen in der Übertragung von Vermögensgütern möglich. Hierzu zählt auch das Verwenden
eines goldgedeckten Bitcoins.
Ein sogenannter „gefärbter“ Bitcoin (in der Fachsprache: „Colored Bitcoin“) repräsentiert das
Eigentum einer bestimmten physischen Goldmenge (beispielsweise steht 1 Bitcoin für 0,33
Feinunzen Gold). Physisches Gold lässt sich natürlich auch schon heute problemlos digitalisieren:
Physisch gelagertes Gold wird zum Beispiel mittels Kreditkarten oder einer App auf dem Smartphone handelbar gemacht. Käufe – sei es im
Supermarkt oder im Internet – lassen sich pro
blemlos in Gold abwickeln. Bisher haben staatliche Restriktionen – wie zum Beispiel Besteuerung
und Regulierung – jedoch einen echten Wettbewerb des Geldes erschwert beziehungsweise unmöglich gemacht.
Der Bitcoin könnte die Stolpersteine, die der Staat
dem Wettbewerb um gutes Geld in den Weg legt,
mehr oder weniger unwirksam machen. Wie immer in einem Wettbewerbsprozess lässt sich zwar
sein Endergebnis nicht vorab exakt benennen. Die
Bitcoin-Fans haben jedoch gute Gründe, um in der
Krypto-Währung ein besseres Geld als das staatliche Fiat-Geld zu erblicken. Gleiches gilt natürlich
auch für die Goldanhänger, die im Bitcoin und seiner Blockchain-Technologie ein „Transportmittel“

fiat money. The same goes for gold lovers, who
see the bitcoin and its blockchain technology as
the means of conveying physical gold. And that
could make gold money an irresistible option.
