COME SUPPORT YOUR BOARD!
Every year, this organization and its volunteers fundraise
over $80K and receive grants of over $80K.
We are a charity and graciously accepted donations of
over $12K last year and are at nearly $15K this year.
We are an Elderly Persons Centre under a Province of
Ontario statute and in order to qualify for over $50K in
operating funds from the Province, the Town of Midland
must support us with $28K, of which $6K is cash money
and $22K is ‘in kind’. This in-kind consists of office services, such as photocopying and the help we receive from
Town staff. We pay rent here at NSSRC equal to what
other non-profit senior groups pay. This years, we will
pay over $28K back to the Town.
Your Board of Directors will be making a deputation to
Midland Town Council on Mon Jan 25 7 pm to br ing
them up to date with respect to our services, our challenges and our future. You are certainly invited to come out
to show your support. We have been serving the North
Simcoe 55+ community members for nearly 30 years!
ATTENTION LEADERS & PARTICIPANTS
SNOW DAYS Askennonia does not close automatically when school buses are cancelled. Unless an instructor chooses
to cancel, classes will be offered. It is solely up to the member to decide whether or not to attend a class. It will be the
responsibility of the member to call the centre if the weather is poor to find out (from staff or answering machine) whether the centre is open or not. If the instructor cancels a session (due to weather or personal issue) a makeup class may be
held at some time in the future. Classes delivered by volunteers may decide to have a specific policy, depending on
things like the driving distance of the volunteers. Volunteers/leaders should make sure that participants are aware of your
plans for snow days.
2016 MEMBERSHIP Membership cards are provided so that people will get to know each others’ names & to confirm
paid membership. A 2016 renewal sticker should be affixed to your card before attending 2016 programs. Membership
remains at $50 per year and entitles you to attend many programs. That’s less than a loonie per week! Guests or prospective members are welcome to come in and sample most programs free of charge. Subsidized memberships are also
available. See Judy for more information on subsidies.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Reminder
When there is no registration
cost for a program, members are
expected to pay $1 per event.
Please drop your $1 in the bowl
at the reception desk.
Also, remember to wear your
membership tag and swipe every
time you attend a program.
Thanks very much.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
Askennonia’s policies are available for viewing at the Membership Desk
in our reception area. Volunteers staffing the desk can help you with info about programs, payments,
special events or volunteer opportunities.
If you plan on attending a program that requires registration, please register & pay before the start
of the program. This allows for proper planning by staff and conveners. You may pay by cheque
or interac machine. Please don’t use cash when paying for programs.
We hope that you find something you love to do here. Welcome to Askennonia! We are glad you
are here.

MINDFULNESS DRUMMING
The Askennonia Drumming Circle is a Mindfulness Meditation drumming group, not associated with any direct cultural or spiritual practice. We have
adopted a simple and serene approach around joyful drumming, loving kindness and mindfulness practice, with an emphasis on balanced participation.
Mindfulness is the awareness that arises through paying attention on purpose in the present moment — non-judgmentally.
To arrive at these goals, we have loosely arrived at these gentle agreements:
1- Listen with respect. Reserve comment and honour the ideas of others.
2 - Everyone has an equal opportunity to talk. Weigh your contribution to the group.
3 - The agreement with or disagreement with the ideas of others does not require verbalization; mindfully, listen to each other and consider new thoughts.
Our format is simple. Join the circle and become one with the community with heart beat. The first half of the time is set aside for joyful drumming and
open to requests for supported intentions. There is a brief transition with a guided
invitation to follow the breath. The last half is silent mindful drumming. The beat
passes from one to the next after whatever period of silence seems appropriate.
We end with heartbeat and a final circle expressing our gratitude to those present.
You are invited to come out and try Mindfulness Drumming at Askennonia
Thursdays at 9 am.
