Visiting my home country of Ghana
and traveling to a number of remote

challenges of locals while working
with an aid organization. I had the
opportunity to visit the village of

challenges. Proceeds from this photo

The United States of Africa is a new
film documenting African hip-hop
pioneer Didier Awadi as he records
African Presidents, an album
spotlighting revolutionary African
leaders like Thomas Sankara, Patrice
Lumumba and Kwame Nkrumah who
led the battle in Africa’s struggle for
self-determination.
In 1967, John Ellison wrote the song
(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful,
which would go on to become one of
the most famous songs in the history
of popular music. In his autobiography
Some Kind of Wonderful: The John
Ellison Story, John gives readers a
unique and detailed glimpse into a life
of tremendous hardship, violent racism
and musical success. Co-author John
Wells will also be appearing.
The kora is a beautiful 21 string
African harp, an ancient
Afro-Mandingue instrument, the
knowledge of which is passed from
father to son.
Zal Sissokho will talk about Kora for
kids and also perform while telling the
story behind this instrument.

On March 24, 1953, Langston
Hughes, renowned poet of the Harlem
Renaissance, was summoned before
the McCarthy Committee investigating
communist subversion in the USA. This
dramatic and musical evening
interweaves some of his testimony
with selected poems, assembled by
Ronald Weihs in February 2009.
Tichaona Daniel Maredza is a
Zimbabwean born self-taught musician
whose music is an acoustic
guitar-based fusion of Zimbabwean
contemporary rhythms and afrojazz
music powered by messages of
inspiration, hope, love and awareness
on issues affecting humanity. He is a
passionate performer who plays
acoustic guitar, drums, keyboards,
mbira (nyunga nyunga), marimba and
many percussion instruments.
Zal Idrissa Sissokho comes from
Senegal and is of the Sissokho griot
family that has passed down the music
and stories of the Mandinko people for
hundreds of years. Sissokho embodies
the traditions and background of this
culture and has an incredible talent for
improvisation. Zal plays the kora and
sings melodies in both the Malinke and

Presenting: A Tribute to Miriam Makeba
Festival Closing Night
Lorraine Klaasen, the daughter of
legendary South African Jazz singer
Thandie Klaasen, is one of the few
South African artists who have
preserved the classic South African
sound of Township Music. Influenced
by South Africa's musical giants such
as Miriam Makeba, Lorraine has
electrified audiences worldwide with
her dynamic stage presence and
showmanship.
Joe Berlinger’s Under African Skies
begins with Paul Simon’s 2011
emotional journey back to South Africa
and the roots of his seminal album
Graceland – but it unfolds into a
kaleidoscopic portrait of the turbulent
birth and ever-shifting life of a work of
art. 25 years ago, Simon released
Graceland to equal parts acclaim and
controversy.
