Dear Friends:
There’s a real sense of satisfaction that comes with getting your hands dirty, digging that
stretch of trail or putting a new tree in the ground. And, it’s especially gratifying when,
at the end of the day you look back with your team of friends and realize how much
was actually accomplished, that you made a sizeable difference, and that you created
something that future generations will appreciate and enjoy.
All across Colorado, from Gateway to Aurora, from Bellvue to Beulah, 64 outdoor places
were made better in 2012 thanks to more than 5,200 VOC volunteers who dug in and
made a huge difference. 2012 was an inspiring year for many reasons, including:
• More families and youth volunteered with VOC – Youth comprised 20% of VOC’s
volunteers, and more families than ever before joined VOC on dozens of family-friendly
projects.
• Corporate teams gave back to Colorado’s outdoors in record numbers – 18 Colorado
companies participated in VOC’s Stewardship with a Team Program (SWAT), engaging
nearly 500 employees in volunteer work while also providing financial support to VOC.
• Organizations joined hands for wildfire restoration – The fires in Waldo Canyon and
High Park left incredible land destruction in their wake. VOC quickly got involved,
joining the High Park Restoration Coalition, and working in partnership with local
groups in both locations to train crew leaders and engage hundreds of volunteers in
restoration projects. VOC volunteers also helped with the ongoing restoration work in
the Hayman burn area this year.
• Awards recognized our impact around the state – Thanks to the efforts of so many
dedicated VOC volunteers and supporters, VOC was awarded the Governor’s Service
Award for Outstanding Nonprofit, the Colorado Open Space Alliance’s Blue Grama
Award for Outstanding Achievement by an Organization, and an REI Stewardship
Leader award.
As you explore this report and read about the people, the places, and the difference made
here in Colorado this year, please consider how you can help with your financial support.
We have lots planned for 2013 – from hosting a statewide summit for youth, to leading
more fire restoration efforts. Your gift helps make all of this possible.
As always, a heartfelt thank you goes out to all our volunteers, leaders, friends, partners,
and supporters for your continued commitment to the stewardship of Colorado’s outdoors.
Thank You!

2012 HIGHLIGHT S
10 projects, 10,000 feet on
the Continental Divide Trail
Youth and families learn valuable
stewardship lessons
VOC took on 10 projects on the
Continental Divide National Scenic Trail
in 2012. Most took place near Leadville,
where volunteers spent several 3-day
stints in the backcountry, ultimately
constructing nearly 10,000 feet of
new trail. Volunteers also completed
significant restoration work on the
Wolf Creek Pass section of the trail in
southwestern Colorado.
VOC hosted a record number of
youth groups and schools through the
Stewardship with a Team (SWAT) program,
including a group of 300 high school
sophomores from Hugh O’Brien Youth
Leadership (HOBY). They removed 4 acres
of noxious weeds and barbed wire fence
that threatened wildlife at Cherry Creek
State Park.
VOC’s first
“kids only”
young
stewards
program,
held at
Staunton
State Park,
was a great
success. More than 20 youth ages 6-10,
together with their parents, spent the day
learning about caring for Colorado’s
outdoors in a fun, hands-on way.
“I had volunteered with the Continental
Divide Trail Alliance for the past 6 years and
worked in the same area for the previous
two. When I saw that VOC picked up these
work sessions I was thrilled to be able to
continue. It feels good to be working on
such a great project and to open more of a
wilderness experience for people who will
be using the trail.” – David Addor, new VOC
volunteer
“VOC’s mission of instilling a sense of responsibility for our public lands includes the whole
family. I want to instill in my kids that sense of responsibility – to the trails we use, to the
campgrounds we visit – so they are motivated and have an expectation of themselves. At the
Keystone project, there was something for them to do that was appropriate for younger kids
who aren’t quite ready to spend the whole day out on the trail. That’s a baby step toward
becoming full fledged workers. That’s a start in the right direction.” – Chris Olsen, VOC volunteer
and former crew leader/board member
Trail projects expand recreation
and boost tourism
Several VOC projects focused on expanding
recreational opportunities for users of all
types, including one in Clear Creek Canyon.
There, volunteers turned an existing railroad
grade into nearly 3,000 feet of new trail
for hikers and cyclists, and built steps on the
steep slope that will manage erosion and
give anglers river access.
“The volunteers
were just
wonderful. This
new piece of trail
is an important link
in the ‘Peaks to
Plains’ trail that will
eventually follow
Clear Creek from
Summit County
all the way out
to DIA.” – Martha
Disaster restoration work
a priority in 2012
Tableman, Clear
Creek County Open
Space Coordinator
Many of VOCs projects in 2012 also had
significant economic impact for towns and
communities, such as this trail project in
Silverton. There, volunteers constructed
a new 1,000-foot trail along the Animas
River, which will provide visitors with more
opportunities for in-town recreation.
2012 was a year of helping Colorado’s
damaged lands recover. The first half of the
year took VOC to the mountains to re-forest
pine-beetle devastated areas. Later, on the
Hayman fire’s 10th anniversary, volunteers
helped with ongoing restoration work by
planting hundreds of willows (in photo). In
October, restoration work began on the
Waldo Canyon and High Park fire burn
areas where volunteers helped with erosion
control and re-seeding.
“The Town of Silverton believes trails are important to attracting and
keeping visitors. This new trail is a significant segment that starts where
people get off the Durango-Silverton train and it connects them to the
Animas River. Our goal is that by offering more trail opportunities like
this, visitors are enticed to return, to extend their visit, to spend the
night, or to buy another meal while they’re in town, instead of being just
passersby. The Animas River trail project with VOC turned out fantastic
and everyone’s really pleased with the end result. It never would have
happened without VOC.” – Marcie Demmy Bidwell, Executive Director,
Mountain Studies Institute
“I volunteered for
the Hayman project
because it’s close to
home and it was a
devastating disaster.
Getting to work on a
project that is close to
home is closer to the
heart. Helping replant
willow trees and helping
Mother Nature return
back to the way it was
before was a satisfying
experience.”
– Eric Renschler, VOC
volunteer and Florissant
resident
Cairn Program youth show their stewardship skills
In celebration of Earth Day and Global Youth Service Day,
students in VOC’s Cairn High School program demonstrated their
outdoor leadership skills by planning and leading a large project
to renovate a trailhead on the Sand Creek Regional Greenway
in Denver. They led 130 volunteers in xeriscape planting, fence
installation, and drainage improvements.
“Environmental Stewardship, to me, means being an advocate for
nature and improving your community for generations ahead.”
– Jacqui Pittman, age 15, Cairn student
Gardening projects help
the hungry, improve
urban parks
VOC hosted 7 gardening
projects this year, which proved
to be highly popular. VOC
worked in partnership with
Grow Local Colorado on many
of these projects, including one
at Denver’s Huston Lake Park.
There, corporate volunteers from
AOL and Mapquest planted
3 large vegetable gardens.
Produce harvested was donated
to local food shelters throughout
the summer.

VOC welcomes new leadership
volunteers
Leadership volunteers are invaluable to the work
that VOC does. They lead crews of volunteers,
prepare delicious food for hungry volunteers,
make sure the right tools are at each project,
and coordinate the many project technicalities.
Dozens of folks stepped into leadership
positions through VOC’s training and mentoring
program in 2012.
“I volunteer with VOC because I like working
outdoors, and the focus on the environment and
on sustainable trails. I became a crew leader this
year because I thought I would be able to give
back more by being a leader.” – George Schamel,
volunteer, certified VOC crew leader
