MANCHESTER DISTRICT NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2015 Manchester District Newsletter An Introduction To Chris Welton APGM Chris was born and brought up in Alderley Edge, went to school locally and graduated from Manchester University with an Honours Degree in Law. He is a retired Solicitor and Deputy Coroner and lives in Wilmslow. He and his wife Barbara have two children, a daughter, Rachel, living in Chorlton and coincidentally married to a Solicitor also called Chris. They have a four month old daughter called Phoebe and an ageing Labrador called Nima. Son Andrew lives in the London area and works as a Chartered Accountant for a Law firm in the City. He and his wife Kate have a one year old son called Eidan. Chris has been a keen sportsman from an early age. His first sport was athletics where he reached County standard before an Achilles tendon injury halted his progress. He then moved on to Hockey which he had played at school before his athletic career took over. His Hockey playing days came to an end only a couple of years ago when he decided enough was enough. In between he was heavily involved with professional cycle racing and held a senior administrative post for a number of years as well as sponsoring a team through his firm. A message from the Manchester Districts Communications Officer Welcome to the Autumn Edition of the District Newsletter which I hope you find interesting. We welcome contributions for future newsletters from Brethren and Lodges and please submit them via email if possible to [email protected] Prior to concentrating on Freemasonry Chris was a Round Tabler and then a Rotarian where he enjoyed many years of Fellowship eventually becoming a District Governor of Rotary International. Chris started his Masonic journey in Macclesfield Cheshire and still maintains links with the Craft and other Orders in that Province. He is a member of three Manchester Craft Lodges, New Avon, where his Grandfather was a Founder, Manchester Lodge of Research and the Lodge of Fortitude. He is also a member of Alexandra Chapter in Manchester and St Georges Chapter in Bolton Chris is also an enthusiastic member of many of the other Orders in Freemasonry. Whilst believing that the first other Order a Mason should join is the Royal Arch, Chris also recognises the important role other Orders can play in advancing a Brother's knowledge and maintaining his interest in the wider world of Freemasonry. As far as hobbies are concerned Chris still maintains his links with his Ex-Round Tablers Club, plays a bit of Golf and spends hours in the garden usually under Barbara’s watchful eye!! I know I am and my list of Lodge Visits for the Season is already posted on the website. I think the Masonic Season 2015/16 promises to be one of challenge and opportunity for Manchester Brethren. We should see positive signs of progress inside Manchester Hall, as it is now known, with the Third Floor Development starting to take shape. There is no doubt that we will have to be flexible at times but I know that we will overcome any challenges that may come our way as the new systems bed in. New opportunities to promote Freemasonry in Manchester will undoubtedly emerge as the new Third Floor takes shape and I hope that there will be some innovative and exciting ideas coming from Manchester Masons with regard to recruitment , better contact with the Manchester business sector and with the City as a whole. I am sure we will have a new home to be proud of. On the subject or recruitment it is very important that we increase the number of Initiates and improve our retention rates. There is no “one size fits all” method of recruitment but I am sure that most Lodges will be able to find new members if they make it a priority, and please remember that experienced help is at hand via the District Team. There will be some Lodges, which because of age profile and Lodge size, will find it very difficult to recruit. I am looking to other Lodges to help the members of those Lodges to continue to enjoy their Masonry by offering Candidates for Ceremonies or simply just visiting to swell ranks in the Lodge Room and provide additional company at the Social Board. Please do what you can. Retention and retrieval are also very important in my view. As far as retention is concerned there is no doubt that an active Lodge with plenty going on will continue to be attractive to its members. There are some Lodges however which seem to just Open and Close on occasions. I find that difficult to understand unless there is a good reason such as “Ladies to Dine” because there is so much that can be done at a Lodge meeting without too much effort. If you find that you do not have anything immediately available for a Lodge meeting please look on the Education and Development Committee section on the website. There you will find Talks ranging from 5 Minutes to 30 minutes and details of Speakers who are willing to visit Lodges. Also the Manchester Lodge of Research, one of our own, has members who would be willing to come and give you a Talk. They are not all “highbrow” by any means and some are quite entertaining and controversial!! There is also a Province wide scheme in place for Retention and Retrieval and it is very important for Lodges to notify the District Chairman as soon as a potential resignation becomes known. The astute of you will have noticed that I have not so far mentioned the “F” word!! All I will say is please continue to give as much as you can, the end is nigh! I am sure that we will have a good Manchester turnout at the Festival Banquet on 29th October which will be the culmination of so much hard work by so many over such a long period. I want to finish this message by saying that I do believe in the close link between Craft and Royal Arch and that the Royal Arch should be the first other Order a Mason should join when he is ready. Freemasonry is a wide and exciting hobby and there is plenty of time for a member to explore and enjoy the other Orders after becoming a member of the Royal Arch and I look forward to continuing my support for Excellent Companion David Basger and his team. I hope to see as many of you as possible as we progress through the Season so when you see me please come up and have a chat, otherwise I will feel like Billy-no-mates!! Joshua Green, the senior deacon in the Lodge recently graduated with a 2:1 honours degree in politics and philosophy from the University of Manchester. He has applied to join the British Army and awaiting a response from Sandhurst about admission in October. His father, David Green, WM of Mellor Lodge has raised large amounts of money for the EL Festival by climbing mountains in South America. AND YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW HOW TO TO CONDUCT AN INSTALLATION! Here is a unique opportunity to experience the extended inner workings of an installation ceremony. Come to Manchester Lodge for Masonic Research's installation meeting on Tuesday 26th January and you will see something really special. It will probably be the first time the Lodge has presented the full inner workings and the new Master, W.Bro Kevin Horne PAGDC will make a short presentation after the ceremony. Our APGM W.Bro Chris Welton is a member of the Lodge and it would be marvellous if Masters and Past Masters from both districts attend and experience ritual delivered to an extremely high standard. Please contact the Lodge Secretary, W.Bro Richard Johnson at [email protected] for details. NO ORGANIST?? Did you know that Manchester Hall reception has a CD Player available to Lodges and Chapters who either do not have an Organist or who do not have one on the night. They also have 2 separate CDs - one for Craft and one for Royal Arch. Both contain all the music usually heard for all ceremonies together with detailed track lists and timings. Although inevitably not as good as the real thing, we do hope this facility will enhance your ceremony. PAGE 5 MANCHESTER DISTRICT NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2015 BRO FRED WALKER PPROVSGW - SECRETARY CALEDONIAN LODGE 204 My work for Alzheimer’s Research UK I know I speak for all fund raisers, whether they are Masonic or non-Masonic, when I say there is always a question mark over what happens to the money we work so hard to raise for our charities. We send off a cheque or put money into a box and it vanishes into a black hole. Since 1994 the Masonic Charities have awarded over £600K to Alzheimer’s Research UK, this figure includes the £75,000 awarded recently but does not include donations from private masons and their lodges. I was privileged to be the first ever Lay Observer on the ARUK Grant Review Board and attended the half yearly meeting in January 2015. The composition of the Board was: clinical scientists, professors and doctors from neurology, genetics, biological psychiatry, neuropathology and associated disciplines. There were 37 applications for funding to consider. Of the 37 only 6 were given an endorsement to fund, with 12 listed for consideration. Shortage of money also played a part. I was reassured after seeing every application reduced to its component parts and assessed on its merits and the associated members of each research team also assessed for competence. I felt that our money was safe and used to derive maximum benefit from every penny we give. Out of each pound given, 83p goes to research and 17p is used for administration etc. This division of money is incredibly high when compared with some other charities. The Forester’s (Building) Society had their annual conference at Southport in June. The incoming High Chief Ranger asked me to speak about Alzheimer’s disease to an audience of 450 delegates. Alzheimer’s Research UK had been selected as the “charity of the Year”. With generous donations and sales of a book, which I wrote with co-author Bro Dr Chris Pomfrett that describes the journey through the disease: Alzheimer’s: An Engineer’s View I raised £420 of the day’s total of £3000. L to R: John and Linda Levett, Past and Present High Chief Rangers, WBro Fred Walker, Vicky Naylor ARUK. On Thursday 20th August I was interviewed by Dominic Hughes, Health Correspondent for BBC News, to comment on the publication of a report suggesting that changes in lifestyle had reduced the percentage of people developing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. As the population ages, the physical numbers will continue to increase. The interview was included in Friday’s BBC1 and BBC News Channel transmissions throughout the morning. In October I am to give a talk on neuroscience at The University of Manchester during the Manchester Festival of Science. Next January I observe the Grant Review Board in London once again. This time it will be a two day event. Interspaced with these events I continue to give down-to-earth PowerPoint presentations on Alzheimer’s disease to Probus, Round Table, WI and Inner Wheel etc. The speaker’s fee and income from the sale of books goes directly to Alzheimer’s Research UK. My running total of money raised for Alzheimer’s Research UK over the last 4 years stands at £27,000. Within sight of my next goal, £30,000. Because there are no early diagnostics, preventative drugs or a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, and because my wife died with the disease, I devote much of my time working as a volunteer for Alzheimer’s Research UK, the largest source of non-governmental funds for research into Alzheimer’s. PAGE 6 MANCHESTER DISTRICT NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2015 MACCABEE LODGE 8947 22ND ANNUAL SPONSORED WALK SUNDAY 5 JULY 2015 Twenty Four Maccabee Lodge members and guests enjoyed their 22nd Annual Sponsored Walk in Arnside, Cumbria. The brethren and families from the Lodge were joined as has been the case for a number of years by representatives from Manchester Charity Outreach a local Manchester Charity for people with learning disabilities. In 2014 the Outreach service users collected £349.00 which was donated to the Maccabee Lodge Benevolent Fund, the Lodge’s Registered Charity. Maccabee Lodge made Outreach one of their beneficiaries for each of the 22 years that the walk has taken place and raised in the region of £1,000.00 for the charity each year. It is hoped that this sum will be exceeded this year. This year 24 walkers (including 2 staff and 2 service users from Outreach) set out from Arnside, Cumbria, and enjoyed a lovely 8 mile walk through Arnside Moss to Underlaid Wood and Fairy Steps, through Beetham Village, a Deer Park and returning along the confluence of the River Bela with the River Kent, back to Arnside Estuary. The high tide was in and they had to take a diversion along an old pretty railway path. The weather was kind until mid-afternoon when it changed its mind and gave everyone a good drenching! After the completion of the walk they retired to the holiday flat of Vicki and Peter Mercer which gve great views across the Estuary and even better homemade cakes and scones. A Charity collection raised of £105.00 which at Peter and Vicki’s request was given to Outreach. Thirteen of the group then continued to the West Lakes for some excellent mountain climbing around the Wast Water Area over the next two days. PAGE 7 MANCHESTER DISTRICT NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2015 PAGE 8 MANCHESTER DISTRICT NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2015 Education & Development 3rd Ceremony Demonstration Series Continuing a programme of initiatives by the Education & Development Committee over recent years and under the direction of Joe Glass, a team consisting of Tony Costello, Harold Cooper and Richard Bermitz presented the last in a series of 3 DC workshops entitled "A DC’s View of the Third Degree" at Padiham Masonic Hall On Tuesday the 12th May. The workshop through demonstrations and interactive discussions, examined the various movements of the participating officers during the Raising ceremony and the importance of the DC’s awareness of working with the Worshipful Master and his team in correctly and successfully directing and stage-managing a complicated ceremony. There was a lively discussion after each demonstration and this enabled DCs to explain the often subtle differences in the manner their Lodges performed a 3rd Degree and also some extremely unique elements that many had never seen or heard before. At each venue there was general agreement that both the demonstration was helpful and the input from the discussions would provide new ideas for DCs to take back to their Lodges. The first 2 in this series of workshops were held in Audenshaw in March and Bolton in April and in total all three were attended by over 80 DCs of the Province. Joe said "From the turnout, it is clear that the workshops have proved a great success. As well as the demonstration, the evening provides a forum for DCs to get together with their peers, something that rarely happens. The feedback was very encouraging and we are currently working on the content and format for our next series of workshops to be held in 2016." PAGE 9 MANCHESTER DISTRICT NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2015 Donations to Non-Masonic Charities by Manchester Masons A series of donations have been made over recent months from the East Lancashire Masonic Community Fund (ELMC) to local Manchester organisations. The Nightingale Centre and Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre, The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and The South Manchester 123rd Scout Group have all been recipients of donations. The District Chairman for City Derby District David Hudson and Charity Steward Mo Afsa planned a series of visits to these organisations to both hand over cheques and also meet the people connected with the important and varied work that they all carry out. On the visit to the Genesis Breast Cancer Centre, Russell Conn DORA was also present and they met with Louise Parker, Charity Manager who received the cheque for £500 WBro Mo Afsa , explaining that the money would assist them in the production of important literature saying “We are extremely grateful to the Freemasons for their kind donation” On the visit to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital David and Mo were joined by District Secretary Mel Rosenthal and Gordon Desser the Teddies for Loving Care Co-Ordinator arrived with a supply of Teddy Bears for the Children. Approximately 200,000 children and young people attend the hospital each year to receive specialist healthcare services from the North West, as well as nationally and internationally. The hospital specialises in, oncology, haematology, bone marrow transplant, burns, genetics, and orthopaedics. During their visit the District Officers were given a presentation by Susan Fairclough who is the Manager responsible for the work carried out by Therapeutic and Specialist Play Service Team. The District Officers were introduced to a six year girl called Paige who is receiving treatment for cancer. Gordon Desser presented Paige with a Teddy for Loving Care Bear. Afterwards the Brethren were given a tour of the Therapeutic Area and the photographs illustrate how they enjoyed themselves! For the visit to the South Manchester 123rd Scout Group David and Mo were joined by Mel Rosenthal, District Secretary and they handed over a cheque for £250. The group meet on Monday evening under the leadership of Scout leader Will Leggatt. The Scout Hut is in the process of being renovated and the donation will go towards the upgrade of the kitchen. Merton Davis was a member of Ark Lodge who had the idea of an Inter Lodge Golf Competition but sadly passed away before he could get it organised. The Brethren of all the sister Lodges ensured that his dream came true and named the competition in his honour This year the first prize was won by David Shalom with 36 points which was presented by two of Merton’s sons Anthony, who is the current Captain of Dunham Forest Golf Club, and his brother Jonathan. Second prize went to Peter Kay which was presented to him by the Worshipful Master of ArkScroll Lodge Steven Loofe whilst third prize was won by Richard Zoltie with the Worshipful Master of Zion Menorah Lodge Russell Rubinstein doing the presentation PAGE 16 MANCHESTER DISTRICT NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2015 British Red Cross celebrates 30 year partnership with The Freemasons' Grand Charity Over the past 30 years, The Freemasons' Grand Charity has developed a strong partnership with the British Red Cross, supporting their work both at home in the UK and around the world. Last year, following a grant to fund a new emergency vehicle in Sussex, The Grand Charity surpassed the £2 million mark in donations to the Red Cross. This milestone has been recognised by the Red Cross who have thanked Freemasons for their continued support. The partnership between The Freemasons’ Grand Charity and the British Red Cross highlights the impact two organisations with a shared focus and a drive for change can have on the lives of people in need. The consistent support of the Freemasons has allowed us to plan and shape our services so we are able to live up to our promise ‘refusing to ignore people in crisis’ both in the UK, and abroad. We are lucky to have such dedicated support, and I look forward to continuing our partnership. Mike Adamson, Chief Executive at the Red Cross Since 1984, The Freemasons’ Grand Charity has helped the Red Cross respond to a huge range of emergency situations across the globe, providing life-saving assistance to those affected by natural disaster. Most recently, £50,000 was donated to help the victims of the Nepal earthquake. The Red Cross not only provides support to those facing disaster abroad but also to those affected by crises across the UK. In 2014, when large areas of the country experienced severe flooding, The Red Cross played a critical role in assisting those affected and The Grand Charity supported these relief efforts with a donation of £20,000. The Grand Charity has also played an important role in funding the Red Cross’s Fire and Emergency Support Service since 2000 when £300,000 was awarded to fund the establishment of 10 services across the UK. Most recently, £48,000 was donated to fund a new emergency vehicle in West Sussex. To date, over £650,000 has been donated to the service, allowing the Red Cross to deploy 20 new emergency vehicles, train hundreds of volunteers and help over 90,000 people who have been affected by fire or other emergencies in the UK. The Freemasons’ Grand Charity is proud of its partnership with the British Red Cross and to have reached this important milestone of over £2 million in funding.
