Exalted Ruler’s Message
The Cleveland Cavaliers are the 2016 NBA Champions. Holy cow…what a feeling. It’s been so long
and we’ve all experienced deep disappointment as Cleveland Sports fans over the years. When I
watched the end, I wasn’t quite sure what to do or how to behave. We kept waiting for something to go wrong. For a miraculous comeback from the Warriors. It’s happened in the past right?
Not this time. Our guys WON…they really did it!
You could almost tell something was different during this championship series. You could feel the
confidence in the air. You could see the determination and focus the players had while on the
floor. There never seemed to be a moment of panic or doubt. This team
went about the task at hand and handled their business, drowning out
the negative naysayers all around them. You see, that’s what we all had
become after so many years, downtrodden fans. The Eeyore of the
Sports World. Negative Nelly’s. Whatever you want to call the broken
hearted Cleveland sports fans. However, this team was different for obvious reasons. They set a goal and did what it took to complete that goal. They believed in themselves when others didn’t. In the face of an entire nation, they did the unthinkable. They won!

things would be around us if we all took that approach. What
could we accomplish if we all chipped in to help. How many lives
could we change together if we only believed we could. In order to
achieve those things, we have to work together as opposed to
against each other.
As a Lodge, we recently came together for a common goal. We
focused on the task at hand, drowned out the naysayers and
achieved our goal, raising enough money to purchase and install a
wheelchair ramp for Gary Maurice, husband of our Lecturing Knight
Liz Maurice. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this a
reality for Gary and Liz. Every donation counted and you all helped
make a difference in the lives of a fellow Elk member.
Liz joined our lodge in April 2015 and brought a renewed sense of
energy and a helping attitude. She brought a bright and sunshiny
disposition and works tirelessly to bring a smile to others. She took
over the Hornblower when asked and has done great work. She
keeps our Facebook page current with up to date information and
makes sure that our members receive an E-Weekly update as to
what's happening in our lodge. She does this all while taking care of
her husband Gary who had a stroke on July 5, 2012. She goes
about her daily routine with a smile on her face and with a sense of
purpose and brings a ray of sunshine into the lives of others.
You’ll see Gary frequently at the Lodge and he has recently begun
helping with our Sunday morning breakfasts. You can see the smile
on Gary’s face when he feels a sense of accomplishment. He’s figured out how to go about the task at hand and stay focused on
what needs to be done. He does it with a sense of purpose. He
does it to be helpful. He does it because he wants to. How much
better would all of our lives be if we embraced the same philosophy. Whether in our business lives or within our church or quite
possibly within your very own Port Clinton Elks Lodge.
There are many people out there in the world that need a helping
hand at times. Focusing energy to help our friends and neighbors
as opposed to having a perpetual negative perception on life can
bring on a Championship feeling every single day. Let’s enjoy and
savor the moment of the Cavaliers winning a championship and
then let’s work together to achieve great things in our personal
lives and within the organizations that we choose to support. Functioning as a team, we can achieve great things. Just ask the Cavs.

Trustee Notes For July 2016
July already? Summer is going by quickly!
The heating/air conditioning unit for the club room is on its last leg. Half of the unit is not working and is shut off. The
other half has bad bearings. The unit would be cost prohibitive to fix, so a new one has been ordered and on the way.
If you notice it being a little warm in the club room, please bear with us until the new unit can be installed. This piece
of equipment will be paid for by the maintenance fund.
We are also in the process of replacing the current P.O.S. system (Point of Service) with a new one. Our current
system is very outdated and has a bad habit of system failure at our busiest times. The new system will include three
palm size computers so the waitresses can place your order from your table. It will then be sent directly to the kitchen
and/or bar. The majority of the system is to be paid for by the gun raffle, and the rest will be paid for by the Sunday
Breakfast. The trustees would like to thank these committees for their generous donation towards the new
system.
The Sunday breakfast is going strong, with crowds of over 250 for the past several weeks. I would like to thank the
members and their wives and husbands who have given up their Sundays to make this a very successful event.
The rib and chicken fest will be held on July 23rd. The cost for the ribs and chicken dinner is $15.00 in advance and $20
at the door, which includes entertainment. Entertainment will be by the Frank and Dean Show. If you wish to see the
show only, the cost will be $12.00. Tickets are available behind the bar.
I would like members to look around and see who is volunteering for events at the lodge. It is always the same people
who work basically all of them. When these 4 or 5 percent aren’t here who is going to take over? It would be nice to
see new faces help volunteer and take some of the load off the members who work on everything. You don’t have to
be on a committee to help with an event. And if you can only give an hour of your time, it helps!!!!
One last thing, I would like to remind everyone to please be patient on our busy nights. Look around on those nights
and you will see most tables filled. The kitchen completes your order as quickly as possible. At times Terri is the only
one back there so please be understanding and considerate of this fact. And remember to thank the staff for their hard
work and dedication. It goes along way in keeping our turnover of staff low.
Please remember in your prayers all our sick and departed members.
