of the social agencies. Her skillful interpretation of their ~rograms has enabled
clients to utilize them more advantageously. For the contributors has come' n.ew
undel'standing of human needs and appreciation of the functions of the agencies,
and thereby greater financial and volunteer support.
As Detroit has continued to guide the nation in the community conception
of the social services, in the wide partici~ation in gathe!ing fun~s for more
adequate programs, much credit'must be given to the dedicated, skilled leadership of this outstanding citizen.

His formal education through private studies was !ested and enrlCh~d by a
life-experience reflected in his great autobiography Pfls?ners All, as varied and
d amatic as that narrated in any of his novels. From his youth he has worked
a~ many jobs, tramped and traveled, observed and written. Possessed of a r,!re
narrative skill, he is a spinner of tales that grip the r~a~er .for they deal with
"blood and earth". His philosophic essays are the d!stillatl~n of clearly c~n
ceived principles; in his poems is the finely tuned musIc ~f his response to .bfe.
Three times a voluntary exile for his courageo~~ resls!ance to the ~azl r~

America, he is a regular contributor to the leadmg newspapers of th~. We.st

nOCTOR OF HUMANITIES
LAWRENCE McKINLEY GOULD
B.S., M.A., Sc.D., LL.D., L.H.D.
"Escort: Dean Victor A. Rapport
Laurence M~Kinley Gould, a native of Michigan; a graduate of the University of Michigan, earning the doctorate in 1921; until 1923, a' member of the
faculty; joining the sta.ff of Carleton College as Professor of Geology, he became
President in 1945.
~t
.
For thirty .years he has participated in the geological exploration of remote
earth areas, written books, monographs, and scientific articles on Antarctic
problems, and served as Officer and Consultant to the Army Air Forces. During
the International Geophysical Year, he has been the Coordinator of Antarctic
research programs for twelve nations. Honored by universities, learned societies,
and governments as one of this country's most distinguished geophysicists, he
serves as a valued member of the boards of philanthropic and scientific foundations dedicated to the support of scientific research and to the advancement of
teaching.
To the burdens of college administration, he has brought the skill and
imagination of his scholarly and scientific work. Under his wise leadership and
dedicated concern, Carleton College has become one of the finest private colleges in the United States, recognized for its high ,academic standards, for its
fine student counseling services, and for its successful integration of traditional
and experimental educational programs.
ROGER LACEY STEVENS
Escort: Dean J. W. Menge
Roger Lacey Stevens, a native of Detroit; one of this country's most successful
real estate brokers, he is also, an Organizer of the Producers Theatre and Member of the Playwright's Producing Company, Broadway's outstanding play
producer.
Deeply interested in the problems of. urban re-development, he has helped
to change the face of many American cities. His encouragement of a sound
combination of private ownership, government cooperation, and functional
architecture has eliminated slums and brought new life to blighted areas
across the country.
His dedication to the welfare of the American theatre has rarely been matched.
For ten year he has backed Shaw and Shakespeare revivals, experimental productions, and promising young playwrights. The soundness of his judgment and
the excellence of his taste are reflected in the many box-office· successes credited to his personal concern with the details of production. But no play he has
ever staged exceeds in dramatic interest his own life's portrayal of an American
dream - a great business man who is also a distinguished patron of the arts.
DOCTOR OF LAWS
WALTER FREDERICK CAREY
B.A.
Escort: Mr. Homer D. Strong
Walter Frederick Carey, a native of Detroit; a graduate of Wayne University
in 1926, he is now President of Automobile Carriers, Inc., of Flint, Michigan.,

Association, and of the Foundation.
In addition to the heavy demands imposed by his many business enterprises,.
he has assumed a full measure of civic responsibility: to his church and its:
national affiliates, to the budget work of national philanthropic associations,
and to his country as counselor in transportation and traffic safety.
To Wayne State University he has given dedicated leadership: as President
of the Alumni Association, Board Chairman of the Wayne University Foundation, and of the Alumni Fund. His generous gifts of time and talent have frequently taken the equally important but less conspicuous form of wise counser

*In the several colleges and schools of the University where it is customary to recognize outstanding achievement with specia'
notice, an asterisk before a candidate's name denotes attainment of a high scholastic average. The official list of graduates cited for
"distinction" or "high distinction" will be compiled subsequently and their diplomas will carry the appropriate notation. This.
practice is not observed in the College of Education or at the Graduate level.

The appearance of a name on these lists is presumptive, but not conclusive evidence of!graduation.
ON CAPS, GOWN'S, AND HOODS
One of the most colorful features of an academic procession is the appearance
of the graduates, the faculty, members of the governing board, and guests of the
University in full academic costume. These caps, gowns, and hoods have long histories
and their patterns and colors have special significance.
The gown recalls the time when all students in centers of higher learning were
. clerics, that is, members of the clergy, and therefore wore the garments which the
Church considered proper for them.
The custom of wearing a cap comes from the Roman usage of conferring the right
to wear a cap upon slaves when they were granted their freedom. At Scottish universities, such as St. Andrews, doctors are created by a ceremony called "capping" in
which a cap is placed on their heads.
In modern universities, the distinctive mark of a degree is the hood. In its earliest
form, the hood was simply an article of wearing apparel. The churches and lecture
halls of European universities were cold, drafty places, so scholars wore hoods merely
as head covernings, sometimes attached to a cape, sometime worn separately.
American universities, unlike those of England and Europe, have adopted a
standard code of academic costume. The cut and material of the gown, the color of the
tassel on the cap, and the pattern and colors of the hood all have special significance.
Each person who is to receive a degree wears the gown appropriate to the
degree to be granted. If he already holds a degree, he wears the hood of that
degree, not the one he is to receive.
Bachelors' gowns are closed at the throat and have long pointed sleeves.
Masters' gowns are open in front and have long sleeves, square and closed at the end,
the arms coming through slits near the elbow. Doctors' gowns are faced with velvet
and have full, round sleeves. Each sleeve carries three bars of velvet, called chevrons.
The most colorful part of the costume is the hood. The color of the lining identifies the university which granted the highest degree held by the wearer. The color
of the velvet trim indicates the faculty or department of learning in which the degree
was earned.
The following table lists the color appropriate to each of the different branches
of learning.

RUKMINI DEVI ARUNDALE
I
Escort: Professor Leonard Leone
Rukmini Devi Arundale, born in South India; former member of the Indian Delegation
to UNESCO, Member of Rajya Sabha (Upper House of the National Legislature); President
of Bharatiya Netya Sangh (Theatre Centre) of Madras; she is one of India's greatest dancers
and patrons of the arts.
For more than thirty years she has been a leader in the revival and exposition of
Indian art forms. As Director of the Arundale Training Centre for Teachers and as Chairman
of the Madras State Sangeetha Sangam (Organization for Music), and as Founder of the
Kalakshetra (Art Centre) she has developed programs in the arts to which talented students
from all parts of the world are attracted. In 1958 she was a most gracious and helpful
hostess to the Wayne State Theatre Touring Company.
The restoration of the art of Bharata Natya, the oldest and most complete of the dance
systems of India, is largely the result of her perseverance. In the period before India's
independence, when this form of dance was in danger of being lost and dancing itself was
considered disreputable, she gave performances of Bharata Natya based on extensive
research and demonstrated to the public that this ancient dance of South India was one
of the great cultural heritages of the nation.
Author, artist, lecturer, interpreter of the richness of the arts of India to many nations
which have given her their highest honors, she is today recognized as one of the great
women of the world.

asterisk before a candidate's name denotes a"ainment of a high scholastic average. The official list of graduate. cited for "distinction" or "high

~-------.... ON CAPS,: GOWN.S, , AND ,'HOODS - - - - - - - - -
One of the most colorful features of an academic procession is the appearance
of the graduat,es, the' fCic:ulty, members of the governing board; and guests of the
University in fuU academic costume. These caps, gowns, and hoods have long histories
and their patterns and colors have special signficance.
The gown recalls the time when all students in centers of higher learning were
clerics, that is, members of the clergy, and therefore wore the garments which the
Church considered proper for them.
The custom of wearing a cap comes from the Roman usage of conferring the right
to wear a cap upon slaves when they were granted their freedom. At Scottish universities, such as St. Andrews, doctors are created by a ceremony called "capping" in
which a cap is placed on their heads.
"
'
In modern universities, the distinctive mark of a degree is the hood. In its earliest
form, the hood was simply an article of wearing apparel. The churches and lecture
halls of European universities were cold, drafty places, so scholars wore hoods merely
as head coverings, sometimes attached to a cape, sometimes worn separately.
American' universities, unlike those of England and Europe, have adopted a
standard code of academic costume. The cut and material of the gown, the color of the
tassel on the cap, and the pattern and colors of the hood all have special significance.
Each person who is to receive a degree wears the gown appropriate to the degree
to be granted. If he already holds a degree, he wears the hood of that degree, not the
one he is to receive.
Bachelors' gowns are closed at the throat and have long, pointed sleeves.
Masters' gowns are open in front and have long sleeves, square and closed at the end,
the arms coming through slits near the elbow. Doctors' gowns are faced with velvet
and have full, round sleeves. Each sleeve carries three bars of velvet, called chevrons.
The most, colorful part of the costume is the hood. The color of the lining identifies
the university which granted the highest degree held, bythe wearer. The color of the
velvet trim indicates the faculty or department of learning in which the degree was
earned.
The following table lists the color appropriate to each of the different branches of
learning:
