Congratulations to our equestrian team who competed at the
recent Arndell Interschools Event at Hawkesbury Showground.
Some outstanding results were achieved from this large team
team. Our school’s commitment towards this sporting event is
obvious when over 10% of the school is in the team!
Thanks also to our families who supported their children in
attending this important local event, helping to establish our
school as a serious contender in local equestrian events.
Congratulations also to our latest recorder ‘blackbelts’ – Aaron and
Orlando.

Equestrian News
Congratulations to all of our equestrian team members. From all accounts it was a brilliant day at the
Hawkesbury Showground last Saturday. Many of our students received outstanding results!
We are very proud of you all! Kylie Hall’s report is attached…..
Maraylya Equestrian Team competed last weekend at the Arndell Interschools Equestrian Carnival. We had a
fabulously presented team and thanks must go out again to Dural Saddleworld, Brooke Elliot, Joanne Stocker and
Kylie Hughes for their efforts towards our team outfits, which received many compliments throughout the day!
Thank you!
Our team consisted of Jaden Guidece, Christine Mossman, Annaliese Hughes, Scarlett Burns, Anne Bellamy, Sarah
McNally, Claudia Hughes, Molly Burns, Keira Lehman, Amarni Rodham and Sienna Stanton.
Our riders all had a super day and come home with many ribbons – a special mention to Little Red Riding Hughes,
Grandma Hughes and The Big Bad Wolf who were succesful in the very competitive Fancy Dress!

Parents please ensure that the school office is aware of your child’s competition entry so that it can be acknowledged by
Mr Gaffey prior to competition. Riders’ families should ensure that any insurance needs or competition waivers are met
and signed respectively, as in most cases there will be no staff member in attendance at these weekend events.

The term is flying past and the children are all working hard. It is great to see the children practising their reading at
home. As they start to try and sound out longer words encourage the children to find small words they know in
these larger words, read ahead to see if they can use the sentence and the pictures to help them work out the word, or
break the big word into smaller chunks. They all enjoyed making and decorating their gingerbread men last week. I
need to thank Maylee for sharing her expert gingerbread making skills. In maths we have been practising sharing out
items into equal groups which is very tricky. We will be practising learning the months of the year in order!
1
Last week, Year 1 made cheese and spinach triangles, cooked and ate them. Some of us were
not sure about the spinach! Most of us tried them and liked it. We have written a procedure
on “How to Make Cheese and Spinach Triangles”.
(Note from the editor: Mr Gaffey thought they were delicious!!!)
This week we have started to learn French Knitting. We have typed a procedure on “How to
do French Knitting”. They are looking very long and colourful. In Maths we have been
learning our friends of ten, this means two numbers that go together to make 10, some of us
are getting very fast at this. We have been using rice to measure the capacity of different
containers and ordering them according to size. We have had lots of fun.
2
Year 2 have finished their novel study of ‘Charlotte’s Web’, everyone really enjoyed it and were a little sad that
Charlotte did not make the end of the story. Fun was had at the end of last week, when we watched the movie
‘Charlotte’s Web’. Lots of discussion happened as we made connections between the movie
and the novel. We are learning about larger numbers and how to count to 10,000 and that
the numbers have a pattern. We have started our science topic of ‘Growing Plants’,
unfortunately the rain has not allowed us to investigate what plants our in our playground.
We have learnt about the parts of a flower and we are able to label them including some real
science terms, stamen and sepal. Next week is our Spelling Bee and we are all looking forward
to next Thursday
3/4
It is getting closer and closer to our Zoosnooze at Taronga Zoo. We have
been learning about the zoo animals that are under threat in the world.
The class have looked at posters of the zoo animals and have learnt
interesting facts about them, even completed reports on the animals we
have studied. The class has also been learning about Mount Fuji in Japan,
which is a volcano. We found out information about volcanoes and how
they erupt. The class used an atlas and a globe to find "The Ring Of Fire"
which is a belt around the Pacific Ocean where half the world’s volcanoes
are found. The children are bringing very interesting "Current Affairs' in each week. The class has kept in touch with
news around the world and in our community.
5/6
The class has had an interesting fortnight,
investigating simple machines and drawing them.
The students have had to write detailed
explanations about the workings of these
machines.
Students have also been completing further studies on “The Indian in the Cupboard”, writing
detailed summaries of the chapters, learning to make inferences about characters
and making gods eyes from sticks and wool.
We are also looking forward to our Bathurst Goldfields trip!
We hope to return rich!
Stay tuned……..
‘Vegelantes’ News!
Our ‘Vegelante’ group has been busy working in the vegetable garden this month, preparing for the Spring crop.
Students have planted tomatoes of different colours, lettuce, and some herbs too. Again, we hope these can be
used in our healthy canteen as part of our menu options for Term 4.
