In the ultimate analysis, public discourse represents the concerns of society, its contemporary state of being and its future direction. It has been our endeavor to build such platforms for conversation in the Centre on a variety of issues to flow and people to partake of them. The course of India Habitat Centre’s destiny has been set on a firm course. It has become a unique concept in the urban landscape. In a sense it felt its way through time and evolved its personality, aided by the fact that there were no precedents to look back on and no stereotypes. At every moment there was the future to build, only we 8 technology in the library. The Habitat Learning Centre offers learning courses on ICT to children and young adults from marginalized communities and opened the third extension learning centre outside Delhi in Rohanakala in Madhya Pradesh; the other two extension learning centres outside Delhi are in Aizawl in Mizoram and Baripada in Orissa. There are currently six extension learning centres in Delhi. Apart from an advanced course in computers, the Habitat Learning Centre also offers learning courses on accounting principles, content management, hardware and networking, and visual documentation. The Habitat Film Club continued to provide an opportunity to belong to a fraternity that shares the passion for cinema in all its multi-dimensional hues. Apart from the Habitat Film Festival, each month featured a selection of films from various countries and genres. A retrospective and panel discussion featuring film legend Amitabh Bachchan was organised as an anniversary special for Film Club Members. Festivals The signature initiatives of the Centre climbed another notch in the year that passed. It was bigger and the range of lectures and master classes was wide, varied and interesting, and drew the interest of many amateurs and professionals. This Festival was planned to bring photography, the real democratic art form, into the public space, thereby creating awareness of photographic arts and initiating dialogue amongst its many practitioners and lovers. The focus was on learning, sharing, showing new work, giving voice to young collectives, interaction between photo practitioners and enthusiasts as well as popularizing the art of photography. The students of the Habitat Learning Centre (HLC) participated in the festival with an exhibition of their works as part of their skill learning process in the HLC. Since its inception, the Centre has endeavored to create platforms for public discourse across different genres of the pursuit of excellence by Indian minds. ‘Samanvay’ is a platform for bringing together expressions of human thought in the varied and diverse cultural contexts that have been nurtured and have flourished in many languages spoken in our cultural milieu. These conversations amongst brilliant and well-known writers seek to bring to our audiences the sparkle of multilingual expressions and their inspirations. It is indeed the only festival of its kind and has emerged as a unique platform for book lovers and young minds to explore the world of the writers, poets and their works. For details please refer Annexure 01. A new initiative this year was the IHC Children’s Orchestra. A series of IHC Walks was also organized. Please see Annexure 02. Details of some of the activities in the different spaces follow: Habitat Learning Centre The Habitat Learning Centre continued with its regular Advanced Computer Course and Skill Development Courses on basics of accounting principles, content management, hardware & networking, and visual documentation. Functional English communication was also integrated into the advanced computer course. In order to familiarize the students in the HLC and in the extension learning centres with all dimensions of applying and using technology, examinations after the courses are all online. This applies to the extension learning centres outside Delhi as well. To enable sharing, learning and reviewing, a weekly Skype meeting mechanism is also in place. All this is in keeping with the focus to empower the underprivileged through mainstreaming IT in their lives. Please see Annexure 03. 11 The annual celebrations at the HLC provided the space for showcasing the work of the children with reference to their learning as well as their talents in dance, music and theatre. The occasion also provides the opportunity for their families, the communities they live in and nominating NGOs to understand and appreciate the progress of their children. The accompanying exhibition, inaugurated by Mr. R. V. While the last exhibition featured photo documentation, this time the students were exposed to building a narrative into their work and this was centred around the work of Kutumb Foundation in a re-settlement colony where they coach girls and boys in football. Over a period of three days the photographers facilitated the students to document the lives of these girls and boys and their families. 12 processes and shelf handling. This has received considerable appreciation and is just commencing its 25th series. Information on each series continued to be disseminated through brochures and email. Please see Annexure 05A & 05B. Conversations on Documentaries Highlighting the availability of another source of knowledge, the HLRC continued to organize ‘Conversations on Documentaries’ by screening documentaries and enabling discussion and learning. Information Alerts Proactive Information Alerts by email continued to be sent to members, policy makers, researchers and NGOs on topics of their interest as registered with the HLRC. Please see Annexure 07. HSVS Programme The HSVS (Harnessing the Strengths of the Voluntary Sector for Enhancing Delivery Capabilities) Programme in partnership with Irish Aid concluded. It was conducted in eleven states, one UT and for NCR. Please see Annexure 08. Dancescape 25 March – 2 April, 2013 The show Dancescape displayed the images by Shobha Deepak Singh. By recording the movement of light Shobha has taken on the role of painter, with her subject matter the dancers and performers she sees in front of her. The colour, form and line that make up painting are the predecessor to photography, where the photographer draws with light. The works in question, as aforementioned, take as their working subject matter the bodies and movements of the dancers on stage and use these to paint a unique landscape, or Dancescape. 15 Annual Arts Evening 23 September, 2013 The India Habitat Centre’s Art Journal, since its inception, has made regular endeavors to define and re-define the various genres of art, which silhouette the larger discipline of Visual Arts. The tenth Journal, Cross-Culture: with special reference to Rabindranath Tagore not just celebrated but interrogated the exponential figure in the history of Indian art and aesthetics. In this issue we continue our journey within the topography of Visual Arts: Tagore is read here not as another idea but a metaphor for fertilization of cross-cultural ideas. The idea behind the theme of the journal is to share and contextualize our own works at the Visual Arts Gallery, within the framework of cross-culture in the presentations of the text and image.
