Exhibitors gain opportunities for business expansion and inspiration from their competitors; visitors enjoy comparative reviews of products and purchase options; host cities gain long-term economic benefits from the visit of domestic and foreign business travelers; and companies engaged in event operations receive stable revenue. Tad Ishizumi Chairman JAPAN EXHIBITION ASSOCIATION What do exhibitions do for the host country? By gathering exhibitors and visitors from around the world, the country stands to become a world-class center and trendsetting place for the industry. In view of these huge benefits, countries in Europe, the United States and in recent years many Asian countries too, especially China, set their sights on developing the exhibition industry by expediting their expansion and construction of exhibition venues. Japan, on the other hand, remains far behind the global trend on account of various factors including an insufficient recognition of the significance of the exhibition business in the political, bureaucratic and economic circles. Exhibitionworldwide; Japan lagging far behind Exhibitions invigorate all industries, and bring about significant, ongoing economic effects for host regions and countries in the areas of accommodation, food and beverages, transportation, and so on. As such, countries around the world are incorporating exhibitions into their important economic policies, and are strongly promoting the expansion and new construction of exhibition venues. Figure 1 below shows a world ranking of exhibition venue space. Even Tokyo Big Sight, the largest venue in Japan, is only in 72nd place. Figure 2 on the right is a comparison of the total areas of exhibition venues in s area is just countries. The area is generally proportional to the economic scale of the country, but Japan’ 350,000m². Thus, Europe, the United States, and China have areas ranging from several times to around a s. As a result, many exhibition venues in Japan are filled to capacity, and dozen times, the size of Japan’ launching new exhibitions and expanding existing exhibitions is difficult. Even so this is still insufficient for Japan. – 10 – Unit = 1km2 Japan is Taking Action to Become an“ Exhibition Nation. ” September 2011 March 2013 First-ever “East Asia exhibition summit” held “Declaration of Japan, China, and South Korea cooperation” signed Prime Minister Abe declares at the Diet: “Japan needs large exhibition venues” On March 8, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stated, “Tokyo Big Sight is in 68th place in the world in size (at that time), and is much smaller than the venues in other countries,” and “Japan needs to have large-scale exhibition venues as a strategy for growth.” This marked a historical first step in moving toward Japan’s becoming an “Exhibition Nation.” Representatives of exhibition associations in Japan, China, and South Korea gathered in Seoul, South Korea, and the “First Japan-China-South Korea Exhibition Forum” was held. A ceremony was held for signing a “declaration of Japan, China, and South Korea cooperation,” and a new page was written in the history of East Asia’s exhibition industry. Signing of cooperation declaration by Japan, China, and South Korea Prime Minister Abe stating that Japan needs large-scale exhibition venues June 2013 March 2012 Statement by (previous) Tokyo Governor Ishihara regarding the expansion of Big Sight: “We shall expand this building as much as possible, as quickly as possible!” At the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on March 15, 2012, (then) Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara stated, “We will expand Tokyo Big Sight, and we shall do this as much as possible, as quickly as possible.” After this, it was decided that Tokyo Big Sight would be expanded to 16,000 m² in 2016, and to 20,000 m² in 2019. Tokyo Big Sight, set for expansion July 2012 Large-scale MICE facility plan proposed by the Japan Business Federation (excerpt) Exhibition venues (indoor) Conference facilities ...................... Japan Business Federation proposes developing “Exhibition venues with an area of 300,000m²” Exhibition venues can be expected to produce high-level economic effects, create opportunities for innovation and business, and strengthen brand power. As such, based on recognizing the importance of realizing new growth for Japan, the Japan Business Federation announced a proposal calling for the development of large exhibition venues. In moving ahead with the development of large exhibition venues, there is a strong hope for strong leadership on the part of the government, and the economic world has expressed that it will further focus on promoting exhibitions and strengthening international competitiveness in a variety of forms. 300,000 m² ..................................... 50,000 m² Three-star or above hotels .......................................... 2,800 rooms, 280,000 m² March 2014 Expansion of exhibition venues in Yokohama City! Announcement on first page of local newspaper Yokohama City decided to carry out construction to expand PACIFICO Yokohama, and this news was reported by Kanagawa Shimbun. This was great news for Japan’s exhibition industry, which is struggling with a lack of exhibition venues. Nevertheless, at the same time, the realities of opportunity loss became apparent, including, “The 70% operating rate of the exhibition venue is almost the upper limit,” “Major reservations have been made up to five years ahead of time,” and “In some years, there were 4,000 applications for the year, and only 1,000 were accepted.” Diet members form “Exhibition Industry Parliamentary Groups” PACIFICO Yokohama, set for expansion On March 27, at the Liberal Democratic Party Headquarters, a general meeting was held to establish an “exhibition industry caucus of the Liberal Democratic Party.” It was announced that a group of 25 Diet members will promote the exhibition industry, and the (then) Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Taro Kimura, a member of the Lower House, was appointed as chairman. Since then, a series of Diet members have joined (87 people as of October 2015). The caucus is vigorously engaging in activities such as submitting petitions to government leaders. September 2012 Around the world, there are systems in which the numbers of visitors announced by exhibition organizers are investigated by third-party organizations, and certification is provided, but this type of system did not exist in Japan. Thus in 2012, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) completed and launched a certification system in line with global standards, viewing the establishment of this certification system as a first step in the development of the exhibition industry. – 11 – Caucus members submitting petition to Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga January 2015 First-ever for Japan! Start of certification system initiated by METI Certification regarding “Accuracy of visitor numbers announced by organizers” Registration certificate given to an exhibition that has received certification (major developments over the past years) Minister Amari reveals that “Exhibitions are part of Japan’s strategy for growth” Local governments across Japan considering venue construction Minister for Economic Revitalization Akira Amari. A supreme advisor to the Exhibition Industry Parliamentary Group Minister for Economic Revitalization Akira Amari attended the JEXA New Year’s party in 2015. In front of 700 participants, a record high number, he expressed his hope regarding the future, stating, “The exhibition industry will serve as a major pillar of Abenomics!” This was a great inspiration for JEXA members. Furthermore, numerous personnel of local governments that are aiming to establish “exhibition cities” were also in attendance. As such, a series of local governments have been seriously examining the construction of venues. – 12 – List of JEXA Members Growth of Membership 297 JEXA Members Continue to Expand Since 2009( 314 0 • SENKEN SHIMBUN Co.,Ltd.
