September 2014
Another month of summer has zoomed by with five fun
Porsche-centric events for members to enjoy. September
was the perfect month to be a MORPCA member!! There
was a Club Race with an HPDE event at Mid-Ohio, a Third
Thursday gathering, a Drive and Dine to Bellefontaine and an
Autocross at Columbus Motor Speedway. Extra credit points
should be awarded to members that somehow participated in
all five. Unfortunately, it would require time travel, because
two of them were on the same day!! Bummer…. I try to get to
most events, but parent’s weekend at my daughter’s college
claimed the day for 2 of these activities.
Club Race with HPDE was on a different weekend this year
(September 12-14) and it worked out quite well. The weather
was cool and almost dry. Saturday morning we had some
dense fog that eventually precipitated during the first warm-up
session. After that it was great track weather for all
participants. Our Zone Rep, Michael Soriano, and his wife
Lisa were part of the scene, watching and volunteering at
their first Club Race and HPDE. Now they know first-hand
how many moving parts there are to organizing and running
an event of this scale. Dave Hayden, the 2014 Club Race
Chairman and Race Registrar Marsha, his wife, did an
outstanding job of getting all the details right and the event
ran smoothly and safely. In addition, HPDE Chairman Bob
Curley and Race Registrar Shannon Moore overcame similar
detail challenges and executed a fun event for all participants.
Many things happened over the weekend, including a
burglary.
Simon Ponpin from PCA National, Patrice Hennessy, and Erin Brandt in Timing & Scoring
Just a few short days after this big weekend, the next event
was a casual Third Thursday gathering at the Woodlands
Backyard in Grandview. The weather could not have been
more perfect. About 40 Porsche enthusiasts showed up for
the social event at the popular sand volleyball venue. We had
an area blocked off where we could park about 30 Porsches
so everyone could admire them. Several non-members drove
by with their Porsches and joined in our fun. They won’t be
non-members for long! Lindsey from Byers Imports was there
too, selling Porsche Design merchandise under a pop up tent,
which gave our gathering a nice focal point.
Only three days later, Super Sunday happened. Mike
Tepley organized the third and final 2014 A/X at Columbus
Motor Speedway, and Bernie Pipan organized his first Drive
and Dine to Bellefontaine. From the looks of the pictures
from both events, good times and good drives were had by
all. Thank you, Mike and Bernie, for your time and talents.
Yes, you read it right… a track security worker was caught
red-handed early Saturday morning with equipment taken
from several garages. There is never a dull moment at the
Mid-Ohio track.
It has been a busy summer for the club. That is a good
thing. And I have met so many new members, too. It looks
like central Ohio could have nice weather for the fall driving
season, so don't put your Porsche away too soon if you have
a 3-season only version! Watch for an email blast for an
October Third Thursday event if the weather looks favorable.
And we have our final HPDE at Putnam too, sign up now for a
great time! Let’s continue the momentum from this summer
with great attendance at our Trickle Charged Saturday
Technical events that begin after the weather changes. Hope
to see you soon!
The whole giant weekend effort at the Mid-Ohio track would
not have been possible without the help of our generous
member volunteers. Ron Carr did a fabulous job of rounding
up the many people it takes to coordinate this endeavor. In
addition to our member volunteers, Bill Stevens contacted
fellow member Rob Thomas to recruit regional JVS students
to help out with Tech and the Ashland JVS once again
provided paddock traffic support. A big thank you to all who
contributed from the Committee and the Board. Our event has
a polished feel to it with everyone helping to make it run so
well.

A race weekend is a funny thing. A lot of work goes
into preparing for the event to make sure you have
all the bases covered - and yet there are a ton of
things not in your control that can ruin your plans in
an instant. This past race weekend at Mid Ohio was
a prime example of the saying “sometimes it is better
to be lucky than good.” By the time I got on the track
for the first warm-up on Friday morning, everything
was in place for a promising weekend. The car was
running strong, Mother Nature was cooperating and
I had a good tire strategy in place. Practice went well
on Friday and even though I was a little farther down
on the timing sheet than I wanted to be, this was
MY track and I knew that even if I was a little slow
during qualifying, I could make up the difference
during the race. I went to bed that night and slept
well, confident in the knowledge that I was as ready
as I could be.
wheel weight. That can cause a pretty bad vibration.
The little voice in my head said “Yeah right dude.
That’s no wheel weight.” So I had the wheels rebalanced anyway and took it for a quick test drive
around the paddock. It seemed OK, so we put
everything back together and waited for the start
of the sprint. Sure enough, the vibration came back
during the pace lap so it was back to the pits while
the rest of the field took the green flag. This time we
pulled the left front wheel, caliper and rotor. The
hub that holds the bearings (and the wheel to the
spindle) had a crack in it. “Told you so dude” said
the voice in my head (I hate it when he’s right). So
this is great. I’m at my home track for the big race
weekend and my car breaks before I can take the
green flag. Just then I got a text from my parents
– they’re coming up to the track to see me race.
Wonderful - I had to figure-out how to get this
thing fixed. On the bright side - at least the wheel
didn’t come off.
Race qualifying is a bit of a crap shoot. There is no
starting order, you just line up and go. The trick is to
find some space where you can lay down a quick lap
without running into traffic. Finally, after three laps
of clearing my way through the other cars, I found
some clean track coming out of the carousel and got
ready to bang out a hot lap. Everything started great,
I had a nice run coming out of turn one and my
entry into the keyhole was spot-on. But, as I turned
in toward the apex, I heard a “pop” from the front
end. Racecars make a lot of weird noises. They pop,
clunk, creak, whine and make a host of other sounds
that give you the impression something bad is about
to happen. But you get used to it and eventually learn
to tell the difference between a noise that is normal
and one that may be expensive and/or painful. This
“pop” didn’t sound good. But, I was on my hot lap, so
I got back on the throttle hard as I exited the keyhole.
Almost immediately, I felt a vibration in the steering
wheel that went from not too bad to “holy crap a
wheel is falling off!” in a matter of seconds. I quickly
abandoned my run and carefully eased the car back
to the pits while trying not to get in the way of the
other cars – hoping desperately my left front wheel
doesn’t decide to go its own way.
One cool thing about club racing is that just about
everyone in the paddock, including competitors,
are more than willing to do whatever they can to
help you get your car fixed and back on the track.
So my son and I started scouring the paddock for
a spare wheel hub. Several teams had extra hubs at
the track, but none that would fit my car. It turns
out that 1986 was the only year they made that
specific wheel hub. It was time to make some calls.
Two hours and a dozen phone calls later, I found a
guy in on the west side of Ohio that had two wheel
hubs he was willing to part with. Two minutes later
my son was on the road with cash in hand. There
was no way I was going to make the second sprint
race, but with some luck, I could still be ready for
the Sunday enduro.
We arrived at the track early the next morning and
quickly went to work on the car. Installing the new
hub went well and I was able to get the car back
on the track for the morning warm-up with mere
minutes to spare. The car felt good so after a couple
laps to warm the tires, I headed for the paddock
to make ready for the race. Since I didn’t post a
qualifying time from the Saturday sprint races, I
had to start at the back of the field – 33rd. I had
a sense of déjà vu from a year before when I had
to start last because of a small “problem” during
Once back in the garage, my son and I jacked up the
car, pulled the wheels and inspected the suspension.
Everything looked and felt OK. Maybe I just lost a

until I made the decision to carry a little more speed
over Madness than I normally do. Voice in my head:
“This is a bad idea.” I knew before it happened that I was
going into the grass. Luck once again intervened and I
somehow kept two wheels on the track long enough to
get the car back on the pavement. “Nice save, stupid”
said the voice. So I backed-off and on the next lap I took
the checkered flag and another 3rd place on the podium.
What a race!
qualification. I somehow managed to finish that race on
the podium, but I wasn’t as optimistic for my chances
this year. There were a lot of fast race cars in front of me.
Starting from the back is an odd thing. It’s more like
watching the start of a race instead of actually being a
part of it. Everyone in front is diving and dodging while
you’re at the back waiting for everything to settle down.
I didn’t run the sprint races, so I had a fresh set of race
rubber. This gave me a definite advantage over almost
everybody in the field. This, combined with my years of
experience at Mid Ohio enabled me catch and pick-off
cars like I knew what I was doing. I was having a lot of
fun. Starting at the back isn’t too bad after all.
In hindsight, luck was on my side this weekend. Maybe
it is better to be lucky than good.
I’ll see you at the track
About 25 minutes into the race things went nutty. I was
chasing a Boxster down the back stretch and we had just
moved right to pass a slower car. Suddenly, I noticed the
yellow flag waving at the end of the back straight. Then
the slower 944 I was passing goes into a four-wheel slide
and I could see cars in front of me going off the track. I
get on the brakes and thankfully the tires bite. Another
car slid past my left door as I turned-in to the corner. I
hit a slick spot but I caught the car quickly and barely
made it through the turn as chaos ensued behind me. I
heard metal crunching. Not good. I learned later that a
car blew a motor and dropped oil all over back stretch
on the racing line - the fastest part of the track. Since
I was in the middle of the track I missed it. Lady luck
smiled on me again.
Chip
The race was black-flagged while they cleaned up the
mess. This had the effect of bunching-up the field –
which was good for me. The cars that were a half a lap
in front of me were now within reach. It took a while to
clean up the track, but eventually we went green again.
As the race wore on, the cars ahead began to slip and
slide around the track. My fresher tires gave me the
advantage I needed to move my way up the grid. Once I
caught and passed the 3rd place car in my class, the voice
in my head piped in again. “OK, you’re on the podium.
Don’t screw it up.” Then I caught a glimpse of the 1st and
2nd place cars ahead battling for the lead. Any restraint
I had flew out the window. So I pushed harder to catch
them.

Mid Ohio is a track that requires a lot of finesse. You
have to be smooth and precise to be fast. Push too hard
and it will bite you. I was slowly reeling in the leaders

Mott’s Military Drive and Dine
Greetings All,
month. Once again I’d like to thank Jeff for organizing
this ride and to comment that these D&D’s are what we
make them. I value your comments and suggestions for
future D&D’s and look forward to planning weekends
based on your suggestions. Till we see each other again
next month which will be our Bellefontaine drive led by
Bernie Pippan.
Once again the turnout and comments for Augusts
Drive and Dine were outstanding. We were
blessed with a perfect day for our drive and Jeff
Zimmerman did not let us down with the route
from the museum down to Circleville.
Share the Porsche Love,
Butch
Jeff reports that we had eighteen cars and thirty
five Porsche enthusiasts in attendance. We arrived
at the museum at 10:30AM and were treated to
a personalized tour of the museum by its owner
Warren Motts. Warren has amassed an extensive
collection of war memorabilia and possesses a
wealth of knowledge on the subject. For those who
have not had a chance to go through the museum
I highly recommend it. The tour continued to
Warren’s outside display area which has several
helicopters, cannons and a WWII landing
craft. Chip Henderson inquired as to where the
Apache attack helicopter had been stationed and
commented that he was there at that time period
and that it was very possible that he had flown
the aircraft. Chip please let us know if in fact you
had seat time in this helicopter. After our tour we
followed Jeff Zimmerman down to the Tuscan
Table in Circleville. The drive was “spirited” and
with few stop signs to slow us down and was
filled with a pleasing quantity of curves to test
our suspension. Lunch was good as our group
dominated the restaurant and despite the wait time
for our food it was quite good. Well that’s it for this
Editor’s note- MORPCA V.P.,
Chip Henderson, checked his flight book and he
did fly one of the helicopters at Mott’s!!

MORPCA Monthly Board Meeting Minutes
August11, 2014
Submitted by Robert Balchick, Secretary
Concours/P2O® by Ron Thomas
Over Three hundred cars participated in this year’s P2O® event
and it was very successful, the weather was beautiful and the event
went very smoothly. Eighty two cars where in MaryLynn’s Row, so
a minimum of $8,200 was directed to charities from Mary-Lynn’s
Row paid registrations. From the overall P2O® proceeds (inclusive
of Mary-Lynn’s Row donations) the board voted to donate a total
of $11,000 to P2O® 2014 directed charities. This resulted in $8000
to the Christopher Carlson Foundation and $3000 to the Humane
Society of Delaware County. An additional $1000 was budgeted for
trailer/storage improvements and another additional $1000 will be
considered for allocation from P2O® proceeds by the board at year
end, for possible club directed charity funding, dependent on how
the reminder of the year’s club events work out. Ron Thomas was
given a gift for his past leadership of the event as he announced he
was stepping down as P2O® Chairman. Bill Slone has volunteered
to take on the role of P2O® Chairman next year. Ron will remain as
Concourse Chairman and will assist Bill in P2O® committee efforts,
similar to the Club Race model, and he will remain involved in P2O®
Vendor Sponsorship in 2015.
Meeting called to order by Chip Henderson, Vice-President- 6:30
pm
Members Present:
Betsy MacDonell, Kevin Hennessy, Robert Balchick, Karen England,
Virginia Huffman, Todd Baumann, Gerhard Hillmann, Ron Thomas, Chip Henderson, Mike Tepley, Dave Hayden, Marsha Hayden,
Bill Slone.
The minutes of the July 14, 2014 meeting were approved.
President’s Report/Correspondence by Betsy MacDonell
There was a discussion of Third Thursday sponsorship, currently
there is no sponsor of this event and after discussion, it was agreed
that sponsorship should remain automotive related.
Treasurer’s Report by Kevin Hennessy
Finances continue to be strong with $41,339 in checking. There was
a discussion of the storage locker options based on the recent price
increase and the need for climate controlled space for some club item
storage, prices at other facilities will be reviewed and a decision tabled for a later date, There was also a discussion of options to eliminate monthly bank fees and 3 options from Huntington Bank were
reviewed but the board is not comfortable moving to paperless bank
statements at this time and the decision was tabled for a later date.
Driving Events by Chip Henderson and Frank Todaro
Registration is ahead of last year for Club Race September 12-14 at
Mid Ohio Sports Car Course and sign up has been good for the October Driver’s Education at Putnam Park. Dave Hayden asked for
anyone willing to volunteer to please contact him. Mike Tepley reported that last month’s autocross at Columbus Motor Speedway was
successful and another event is scheduled there for September 21st.
Planning of all driving events for next year has started and there was
a discussion of other venues and types of events such as a car control clinic. Chip Henderson discussed the concern that occasionally
there has been a non-registered person on the track with instructors
at our driving events, he noted that this practice represents a liability
and is not covered by the Club’s insurance and cannot be permitted.
He indicated a memo will be forthcoming to all instructors.
