The President's Message
Honoring Our Own
hat a fun 35th PQ Birthday party we celebrated! I
enjoyed the blend of social and guild business,
plus I added to my stash. Thank you to all the members
who participated before, during and after the event to
make a success.
Our latest Opportunity Quilts are complete and they
are gorgeous! Thank you to all the members who
brought the quilts to completion. My first hand quilting
stitches are contained in one of the two quilts. I continue
to learn the skill and art of hand quilting. Practice, prac
tice, practice is the mantra of my hand quilting mentor. I
can’t wait to see the Opportunity Quilts displayed at Pa
cific International Quilt Festival (PIQF), Oct 1720 at the
Santa Clara Convention Center. PIQF is the 20132014
kick off event to begin sharing what we enjoy most about
PQ with others. I always look forward to PIQF for in
spiration, to connect with quilting buddies and to sup
port PQ with white glove and Opportunity Quilt ticket
sales. When you are at PIQF, stop by the PQ booth to say
hello.
The final TieIn of the 20122013 fiscal year was held
in early September. Thank you to Always Quilting for
providing the venue and the PQ team for holding the
event on Saturday. I am confident the InnVision Shelter
Network recipients will treasure our quilts!
For those that are participating in the Annual Chal
lenge and the 20122013 Monthly Project, keep up your
hard work. I look forward to seeing all the quilts at the
December 2013 meeting.
As your President, I am excited to start this year's
journey! Let’s all make this journey even better than the
previous 35.

S
ylvia is one of our very talented members who has
been quilting for over 20 years. Having taken several
classes, she mentions many fabulous teachers who not
only inspired her, but also helped her to develop her
own sense of design and technique.
She has won several awards and has been published in
various magazines and calendars. Currently, her quilt
“Bow Tie” has been juried into Quilt National 2013. It
will be on display until September at the Dairy Barn Arts
Center in Athens, Ohio and then begin a twoyear tour
into galleries and museums throughout the United
States. It is due to be on exhibit at San Jose Museum of
Quilts and Textiles beginning May 6, 2014.
Her workshop on October 17 will showcase the quilt
“Potted Pansies”. The project will focus on making a 12”
sampler of a pansy from the pattern that will be
completed during the workshop. The pansy could be
used to complete the quilt or used to make a tote or a
pillow. There are still spaces available, please contact
Connie Buchanan if you want to sign up.

What Can PQ
Members Do?
As the 201213 year for PQ comes to a close, it is time to
tally the results. Amazingly, PQ volunteers were able to
donate to:
Lucille Packard Unit at Stanford Hospital
217
NeoNatal Quilts
330
Knitted caps
61
Bumper pads
Shelter Network/InnVision:
36
quilts from BEE Charitable
30
quilts from PQ TieIn events
Blind Babies Foundation:
19
completed quilts
32
tactile quilt tops
PolyTrauma Unit of VA Hospital:
14

(to be delivered in November)
Future PQ TieIn events:

Quilters are not "slackers", that's for sure! In reviewing
the signin sheets, I discovered
• a combination of 60 members and 2 guests attended the Tie
Ins,
• 6 bees hosted "cutting parties" to assemble kits for BEE
Charitable
• 74 members participated in the Outreach Program (up from
54 last year!)
I've always said, "Quilting is all about giving." And the
generosity of our members attests to this spirit, as we
offer warmth and comfort to those we may never meet.
— With my sincerest thanks
Barbara Crawford, Outreach Coordinator

2–4PM Opening Reception
Fiberart International: The San Jose Museum of Quilts
& Textiles is pleased to present the 21st triennial juried
exhibition, Fiberart International 2013, the foremost
exhibit for textile artists worldwide. This is the West
Coast premiere of this prestigious exhibition.
Sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, this
internationally renowned exhibition is considered the
premier platform and benchmark for the latest
movements and innovations in the everevolving field
of fiber art. Pushing the boundaries of fiber art, the
exhibit showcases works that are both conceptually
groundbreaking and visually stunning. The show
features 40 works from a diverse group of 37 national
and international artists, both acclaimed and
emerging, and explores a wide spectrum of textile
practice.
Translucence: Cathy Breslaw Southern California
artist Cathy Breslaw’s recent work uses a unique
material— an industrial mesh sourced in
Shanghai—that she layers, manipulates, and combines
to create ethereal abstract hangings. In Translucence, a
solo exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Quilts &
Textiles, wall hangings of various sizes are on exhibit,
capturing the transitory nature of light and movement.
Her themes play with the ideas of light and space,
capturing things that can’t be seen, and the fragility of
a moment in time. Breslaw’s stunning transformation
of these materials and repurposing from their
ordinariness to translucent, floating drawings in space
is a symbolic visualization of the Buddha mind, of
being in the present moment.

I
decided that it was finally time to work on a quilt
using a pattern I purchased about three years ago in
Victoria, Canada while visiting my dear quilting mentor.
Since then, I have been accumulating fabric in rusts
and browns. One thing that I loved about the pattern
was the stained glass effect. This summer I checked the
supply list and found some items on the list I was not
familiar with. There were sandpaper dots. The sales
people at two different shops did not know what they
were. I finally found the sandpaper dots mentioned in
the pattern. They were to be used for gripping plastic
templates. Eventually I found them in the quilting
notions section of a crafts store.
The other unfamiliar item was a bias tape maker. I was
very confused by the pattern’s description of how to use
this device. I read it over and over. I got the impression
that I was supposed to turn over a quarter inch on both
sides of the tape before placing the fabric into the bias
tape maker. What good was the tool if so much effort
was still involved? I mentioned my dilemma to a much
more experienced quilting friend. She agreed that
something was not right. She invited me to bring the
project to her house so she could look into it. She
immediately decided that turning the tape over on each
side was an alternative method to the bias tape maker
and she helped me figure out how to use it.
I had already cut out the fabric and positioned it on
fusible batting. I was not happy with the lack of contrast
between two of the fabrics. She recommended that it was
worth the extra expense of finding a different fabric. Off
I went to my favorite fabric store which just happened to
be open later than its regular hours and found a fabric
that worked better with the rest of the fabrics.
I immediately recut the eight pieces on folded fabric.
Something was wrong (as usual). Instead of eight
identical pieces, I had two different shapes, one with a
corner on the left and one with a corner on the right.
(See photo.) I went back to the pattern and remembered
that these pieces had been cut out of unfolded fabric.
Fortunately, I managed to have just enough fabric to get
all the pieces I needed.
Next month I will continue with other challenges and
solutions I’ve encountered with this project.
O
ur library has been on vacation for two months,
but in October, you will be able to check out books,
and possibly there will be new ones after PIQF! This is a
heads up, not for fall or winter, but late spring, 2014. It's
time to share skills at Heart to Heart.
I can't vouch for the origin of the name, but the event
is really heartwarming. Members volunteer to share their
skills, demonstrating something they do well. Usually
these are about half hour segments, so even those teach
ing have time to be students at another time during the
afternoon.
Quilting is constantly changing. We now have com
puter generated designs, can use the printer to put im
ages on cloth, have learned skills from needle workers in
Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, as well as our
own country. We have come a long way from cardboard
patterns in labelled shoe boxes.
Be thinking about what you are going to share as you
turn teacher for a day, so when we call you, your answer
will be yes. More later, as we choose a date and a venue.
— Joyce Rosenstiel and Barb Valley
Stay tuned for the reveal of the overall stained glass
effect in November!

"Potted Pansies" with Sylvia Gegaregian
October 17, 2013
Sylvia is one of our very talented members who has been quilting for over 20
years. She has won several awards and has been published in various magazines
and calendars. This workshop will focus on making a 12” sampler block of a
pansy taken from an original quilt design by Sylvia. The workshop lesson will
demonstrate all the techniques that Sylvia used in her quilt "Potted Pansies". The
completed 12" block can be used to make a tote or pillow or used to complete the
quilt pattern. The pattern for the sampler block is included in the workshop
materials. The quilt pattern will be optionally available for $10 at the workshop.
"Circle Pizzazz" with Judy Sisneros
February 20, 2014
Our February workshop will feature Judy Sisneros. The inspiration for this class began
with the “Snake Trail” block which Judy has been teaching for years. Plannedovers can
be used in a second quilt or in the border. Templates will be available for purchase at
the workshop.

"Wearable Art Using Zippers and Ties"
with Mary Boyer
August 21, 2014
Mary considers herself a Junk Rescuer or “Green Quilter." During this workshop she
will cover projects using zippers and neck ties. By the end of the day, you will be taking
home with you FOUR COMPLETED projects. The projects you will use yourself or as
gifts to give friends and family during the holiday season. The projects are very easy, so
you will actually complete the projects.
Have a bad back? There is not much sewing in the projects so you can bring your own
sewing machine or team up with a friend and use their machine.
