Celebrating 26 Years of Cancer Support!
As we celebrate 26 years of service to cancer patients and their families, we reflect on how true the
expression is of “how time flies”. These past years we have grown and expanded our programs. One we are
truly proud and excited for is our “Kid’s Community” which provides support and mind/body activities
for children whose loved ones are affected by cancer. We continue to offer all of our core programs and
newly expanded programs at no cost whatsoever. What a fabulous accomplishment for this community
to share. We are forever grateful to our founders, board of directors, staff, volunteers and donors.
Now an international organization consisting of 57 affiliates and 120 off site locations, Cancer Support
Community –Redondo Beach owes its origins to Dr. Harold Benjamin who opened the first Wellness
Community in Santa Monica in 1982. Our visionaries in the South Bay raised funds and we were the 2nd
Wellness Community in the country to open our doors. We have continued our mission with the highest
standards of psychosocial services at no charge whatsoever to thousands of cancer patients and their
loved ones.
Today, we again want to extend our deepest appreciation to our generous sponsors, food, wine and
auction donors, volunteers, staff and guests for their generous support. THANK YOU again for helping
to make 17 years of Celebrate Wellness our “signature event” and to help raise funds for our ongoing 150
programs per month.
We hope you will enjoy your day and that you will bid generously, knowing that all monies raised today
will stay in your community to help people affected by cancer, again, at no charge whatsoever.
It is truly heartwarming for both of us to know how many have taken advantage of our programs at Cancer

Leaving a Legacy

December 11th of 2000 started like any other day in my life. Just
another sunny day in Southern California which like so many
other things in life gets taken for granted, even in December.
Late that afternoon, a doctor gave my wife Diane the diagnosis
of cancer and all of a sudden life as I knew it was forever
changed. When that insidious and often life-taking-dream
shattering disease is growing inside someone you love, the
world is turned upside down. Doctor appointments, second
opinions, confirming the pathology of the tumor and finding
the appropriate therapy while making sure insurance covered
it was the immediate focus. Even though I share everything
with this woman, I couldn’t tell her my deepest fears and
simply buried them since she couldn’t be burdened during the
fight of and for her life.
The one organization that kept coming up in conversations was the Cancer Support Community.
Several trusted friends said we must go there as it would be a “game changer” in this fight.
Almost in a fog, we made our way to the Redondo Beach Pier and the welcoming confines where
Cancer Support Community is housed. During our introductory meeting with a couple who
went through the exact situation we were now in, I agreed to their request of coming three times.
If this wasn’t for us, we’d know by then. That said, I enjoyed that introductory meeting as they
“got it” while almost everyone in my life while well-meaning didn’t understand what we were
going through.
Diane’s group consisted of other women who were in the same fight against Breast Cancer while I
was in the family group. After 2 hours, we both came out of our respective meetings rejuvenated
and with clearer heads. We agreed to 3 meetings but came for a year and a half. The facilities
were fantastic and the professional facilitators were magnificent. Everything else in this fight
cost money and after several sessions I inquired about the bill that I must owe. I was told that
caring people donated so that I could focus on being patient active and not worry about paying.
In my 33 years on this planet, I don’t think that I was ever given such an incredible and generous
gift.
Four years later, Diane is cancer free and while we are forever changed, normalcy has returned.
We are creating a trust and deciding how we divide all that we have been lucky enough to acquire
in our lives. We take care of our child, our parents (should they outlive us), our siblings. But we
wanted to leave a legacy. Yes, we chose to leave a sizable piece of our estate to the Cancer Support
Community and pay our good fortune forward. Generous people took care of us as total strangers
and we will do the same. Even though we enjoy every day and hope that our planned gift doesn’t
happen anytime soon, we feel very good knowing that when that time comes, we will be helping
others. It actually inspires me to work a tad harder each day knowing that the better we do, the
more we will be able to leave to provide that shelter when lives are being turned upside down.

A bid sheet is displayed with each item. You may bid on the items by printing your name and bid
number on the appropriate line. Minimum bids and increments will be noted on each sheet. You
may raise the bid by no less than the amount indicated. The person whose name and bid number
appear opposite the highest bid at the time the bidding is terminated is the winner of the item.
Winning bidders’ numbers will be posted on a board near the cashier and auction area. Payment
may be made by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover. After you have
paid, you may pick up your items from an auction assistant at the “pick-up” area. All items must
be collected by the end of the evening.
The silent auction will open at 2:00 p.m. and will close by around 5:00 p.m. If two people are
actively bidding on an item when the auction closes, it is the responsibility of the bidders to
stay by the item and advise the staff picking up the bid sheets that they wish to have a “bid off.”
Bidding will be continued until a winning bidder is determined.
