O
ne thing is for certain! The U.S.
Marshal pool in CFDA is some of
the finest folks in the game and I assure
you they are dedicated to the sport as
well as represent their respective clubs
with the utmost of integrity and passion.
I can remember our first muster and
how we were just trying to figure out
our place in CFDA. As we learned
what our responsibility was we grew
not only in numbers but in confidence
and awareness of our role. Here we
are now holding the association’s 3rd
U.S. Marshal’s Muster. The agenda
this year was a tough one. Not every
item submitted to CFDA was on the
agenda. I can assure you that the ones
that were on there were tackled head
on one at a time and analyzed very
carefully. We had 21 U.S. Marshals
from all over the country set down and
spend a few hours for the betterment
of the sport. Keep in mind here that
the U.S. Marshal is not only the club’s
representative to the CFDA but also the
CFDA’s representative to the club. The
Muster was formed to help improve the
association and the sport with valuable
input from its membership. That being
said, always remember that you have
access to your U.S. Marshal at the
local level and if you have questions
about the muster, don’t hesitate to ask
him or her.
Some items were not settled
in the meeting and would require
the CFDA executive staff to discuss
further some of the issues but all the
information obtained in the meeting
was carefully considered.
On behalf of Quick Cal, Alotta
Lead and myself I want to thank our
U.S. Marshals for their continued hard
work and dedication to the success
of this sport. You are certainly an
important cog in the wheel that makes
this wagon train work smoothly. Again
I commend and thank all of you for
your commitment to CFDA.
Below are the agenda items
discussed and the decisions made by
CFDA. The following decisions will
be in effect immediately upon this
printing of this Gazette.

in Titled Matches –Aminimum
of 75 shooters for State Titled
Championships. A club must
be able to accommodate at least
75 shooters at the State Title
level to sanction the match.
No Competitive shots without
an opponent or time to beat.
This usually occurs from
either a timer malfunction
or a challenged round. If the
opponent does not have a time
it is a moot point, no shot will
be allowed. Also, no more
shooters without an opponent.
This usually occurs if someone
leaves early or doesn’t make it
to the line on time and this just
slows down the contest. The
present shooter wins the bout
by default.

attend all the matches etc. The
Regulator Posse was formed
to help new clubs learn how to
be --new clubs! – how to run
contests, townsfolk alleys, etc.
The Regulators themselves

Regulators are expected to be
able to teach all the aspects of

match competition cartridges.

Timers. Tests were conducted
on the Precision Timers and
there were no problems with
the random start patterns. The
timer meets all of CFDA’s
requirements.

11. Standard equipment shall be
used on a firing line. This was a
tough one – If all the equipment
meets the requirements of
CFDA guidelines this is not
an issue. Several suggestions
included insuring each set
of targets were the same and
maybe same equipment on
each range. What we’re not
going to do is require certain
equipment. We all know what
the rules say – read them, if
someone is not following the
guidelines that’s one thing but
dictating what equipment to
use is not going to happen.
12. Technical or Safety Violations
– Carry forward to all
weekend events. Technical or
Safety Violations will count in
each contest i.e Violations in
the main match do not count
toward the second chance
shoot, etc.
13. Clarification of Couple –
Spouse or Significant Other.
CFDA defines a couple by
spouse or significant other just
as the memberships do.
14. Right of Refusal – Is the
“Right of Refusal” limited
only to safety issues or can
a club refuse participation
on other issues? The Official
CFDA Policy is: CFDA is not a
political organization and will
not get involved in the internal
politics of any club.
15. Location of larger contests –
Relocation of some to East.
CFDA only hosts one match
– The World Championship
– it is located in Fallon, NV.
All other contests are hosted
by clubs, these clubs have
developed relationships with
their sponsors, city councils etc.
There are lots of opportunity to
create “larger contests” in the
East. Clubs have to be willing
to build them.
16. Top Gun Awards – Should
men
and
women
be
recognized equally to 10
places? - Yep, and they will
be for 2010.

for the club must be sent by the club
president to Mississippi Marshal by
December 31, 2009. All agenda items
for the 2010 U.S. Marshal’s Muster
must be submitted to Mississippi
Marshal by August 15th, 2010.

ello Everyone! What a
wonderful
Season
CFDA
is having. Membership has been
booming, some new Clubs have
emerged and the wax bullet makers
are doing very well. Everyone really
seems to be doing their part and the
Sport is growing. Let’s all continue
to show our support.
Things have been crazy
down here in the Lone Star State.
The weather has been pretty strange
for this part of the country, but
it didn’t effect a great season of
shootin’. NTSG started off with the
Seasons first Top Gun qualifying
shoot and Texas’s first CFDA State
Championship. We were proud of
the way the event went and once
again, thank you all for coming
out. Presently NTSG is putting
the final touches on the 2010 Red
River Showdown CFDA Texas State
Championship for next March. We
have learned a lot since the Event
and have taken what we learned and
have begun to produce an even better
Shoot for next time around.
Some promotional material
will be out soon for the Event, and
a few changes should really make
it a “not to miss” Event. The total
Cash prize has increased to $2,500.
The breakdown of cash prizes
will follow on the Event Schedule
and Registration. The stand alone
Categories will have a little different
format than last go around. If
you attended the Colorado State
Championship you will be ready for
the Texas categories. All categories
will be back to back by round and will
end in last man standing format.

and improved, I think you will all
enjoy the Event in 2010. Electricity
is due to be in place by the end
of this month and will be shortly
followed by water. The Main Stage
is equipped with 6 permanent targets
and the Club house is undergoing a
Wild West facelift.

The “Stand Easy” command
and what it means!
How many times do we hear
the Range Master or announcer
repeat “lanes blank and blank
- “Stand Easy”. As a Range
Officer it’s my job to keep the
range operating quickly and
safely. The time wasted waiting for someone to stand easy
causes a lot of things but mostly slows the contest down. The
command of “Stand Easy”
means just that - stand easy.
When your given a command
to stand easy just freeze. Don’t
continue unloading, don’t
shake you opponents hand,
don’t visit with the hand judge,
- just don’t move. Keep the
muzzle pointed down range
and freeze- simple as that.
Wait for the competitors on
the line to shoot their next shot
and continue what you were
doing. This keeps the match
moving along and reduces
lost time. As these contests get
bigger and bigger we’re going
to need every second we can

The Guns
Single-action revolvers, factory chambered for .45
Colt caliber, with non-adjustable rear sights such as:
SAA Colt, Colt Bisley, 1858 Remington conversions,
1875 Remington, S&W Schofield and faithful reproductions thereof, plus most Ruger Vaquero models.
The external parts of the revolver must match factory
stock contours and made of original type material:
i.e. hammers must not be bent in any way. No trigger
shoes, no mods to the trigger guard or grip frame, etc.
Front sights are optional and barrels must be a minimum length of 4-1/2”, except in the Shootist Category
(7-1/2”). Hammer knurling may be smoothed.
The Holsters & Gun BeltS
1800’s-style Mexican Loop, Slim Jim, and California Pattern holsters or leather rawhide construction. The over the
belt-style holster will be worn on the side of the leg only.
No cross-draw, shoulder, buscadero, contemporary Hollywood or steel lined holsters are allowed.
Ammunition
Ammunition used is full sized .45 colt cases with of black
powder or Hogdon 777 behind a wax bullet, which may
not exceed 750 fps. A .45 Colt case made to accept shotgun primer (no powder is used) with a wax bullet is an alternative ammunition and is recommended for practice or
smaller contests.
Targets
The standard Cowboy Fast Draw target is a 24” round
disc with a start light in the center. The target will measure
50” from the ground. White lithium grease is applied to the
target to track all wax bullet hits.
Competition Timers
Digital timers must time to the thousandth of a second.
Sanctioned contests must use target with impact sensors.
Shooting Style
Most folks use a thumb cocking method, but fanning is
allowed. Trigger finger must be out of the trigger guard. The
muzzle of the revolver must be in front of the holster before
discharging the round. If fanning, the fanning hand cannot
cross in front of the body until the target light comes on.
Contests
Contests are shot elimination style, best 2 out of 3, or 3
out of 5 shots per round. The standard contest is luck of the
draw man vs. man elimination.
Gunslinger – 15 ft.
Gunfighter – 18 ft.
Master Gunfighter – 21 ft.
There are Men’s, Ladies and Youth Divisions
Clothing
1800’s period clothing is strongly recommended. Western
cowboy, including working cowboy clothing is acceptable.
Western boots or moccasins are acceptable footwear. Western-style blue and black jeans are acceptable.
