About The Shabbat Project Toronto
The Shabbat Project is a unique, global "grassroots" movement that unites the
Jewish people through experiencing one Shabbat together.
It all started in 2013, when South Africa's Chief Rabbi, Warren Goldstein,
invited all of the Jewish people of South Africa to enjoy one complete
Shabbat together. Despite initial skepticism, it was a huge success. Seventyfive percent of South African Jews kept Shabbat -- and captured the event
attention of the world.
In 2014 the movement spread across the globe and 1 million people in 465
cities, in 65 countries united to experience Shabbat together. According to
Chief Rabbi Goldstein, "Canada can be tremendously proud of the fact that
Toronto has emerged as one of the global hubs of the Shabbat Project."
In 2015, the Shabbat Project spread to 915 cities in 63 Counties and 9
Continents -- and Toronto continued to lead the way.
In 2016 Jews from all over the globe will, once again, unite through the beauty
and sanctity of Shabbat putting aside all differences in background or
upbringing to become one nation, undivided.
Here in Toronto, over 1,000 families will be keeping a full Shabbat and
thousands of individuals across Toronto and the GTA will be celebrating
Shabbat in a significant way for the first time with the Shabbat Project. Each
Shul, Synagogue, Temple, School and Organization in the GTA will be
participating in its own way.
You can get involved either by volunteering, by sponsoring or donating to help
offset the cost or by contacting your Community leaders to get them on
board. Connect with thousands of other Jews across Toronto—and around
the world—by bringing your own special spark to the timeless observance of
Shabbat.
The Shabbat Project in Toronto is organized by a coalition of Jews that
represent the entire spectrum of Jewish association and
observance. Participation is open to all Jewish people regardless of language,
culture, ethnicity, geography, affiliation, denomination and observance. We
believe that labels are for clothes - not people. We don’t care if you’re
unaffiliated, Reconstructionist, Reform, Conservative, Orthodox,
Reconformidox or anything else -- we invite you to join us!

Dear Friends,
Baruch Hashem the Chagim were amazing! From the Shofar blowing on Rosh
Hashana, the intense praying on Yom Kippur, and the great happiness on
Succot, to the amazing dancing and good times we had together over Simhat
Torah...they all went by like a dream! If you missed out, we hope you come
out next year! Though the location will hopefully be in Jerusalem!
So the new year now begins and we're back to our routine. Parashat Bereshit,
the start of the Torah, is what we're reading this week and here we definitely
find a tool to have with us throughout the year.
Upon creating the world and creating man, the Torah tells us (2:7) that "He
[Hashem] blew into mans nostrils the soul of life, and man became a living
being". The Onkelos there famously writes that a "living being" means: "a
speaking spirit". This means that we are above animals and all other creatures
because we have the gift of speech.
Now how do we use this great gift properly? The Pasuk (2:5) tells us that
Hashem did not send rain on to the earth because there was no man to work
the land. Rashi (quoting a Medrash) tells us that the words "no man to work
the land"
‫ואדם אין לעבוד את האדמה‬can also be explained that: "man didn't
do the proper work on the land".The Medrash tells us that when Hashem
created trees and vegetation He placed their tips just above the ground and
only when Adam realized that rain will raise and sprout out the vegetation, did
he pray for rain. Prayer is also called Avoda (hence .( ‫לעבוד את האדמה‬Only
when Adam had Hakarat HaTov and recognized the utility of rain did he use
his mouth to pray and spring forth the vegetation.
The concept of Hakarat HaTov (recognizing when one has done good to you
and acknowledging that), is from one of the foremost concepts that Hashem
taught Adam because it is so very important.
We are people that heavily rely on others to live our day to day life. From the
moment we were born we relied on our parents to tend to us. We rely on the
city that they built our roads safe to drive on, and we trust that the processed
foods that we intake don't have poisonous ingredients in them. I can go on
and on. Almost every action we do is a result of relying on others in some way
or form.
Hashem wanted to teach man that you are not alone in this world and that you
will need the efforts of others for your own life, and if so then you must
recognize every person that you rely on. If doing so then it will be a
harmonious world of peace among mankind.
We always say "Baruch Hashem" and "Thank G-d", which are tunes of
recognizing Hashems hand in all that we do and in what occurs.
This is the ultimate Hakarat HaTov. May we keep this up; internalize this
message every time we say "Baruch Hashem", and pursue peace with fellow
man by recognizing the good that each one does.
Shabbat Shalom U'Mevorach
