It’s Time for Festival #28
The event we have been waiting for
all year is here! Make room for the 28th
Annual San Diego Thanksgiving
Dixieland Jazz Festival – Nov. 21-25,
2007 at the Town & Country Resort and
Hotel in San Diego’s Hotel Circle.
This year’s program features a
wide variety of vintage sounds, from
Ragtime to Rockabilly. AFCDJS is
proud to present bands and musicians
from around the globe, playing worldclass music.

buffs. They will delight to the music of

the Titanic JB. The Climax JBand Sac
à Pulses lend an international flavor to
the lineup and the Heliotrope Ragtime
Orchestra plays authentic ragtime and
“pre-jazz” music.

Studies with a
Master Musician
Last year at the San Diego
Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz
Festival, a young tenor saxophonist
named Chloe Feoranzo turned heads
throughout the weekend as she sat in
with the Mighty Aphrodite Jazz Band,
Paris Washboard, Blue Street Jazz
Band, Uptown Lowdown, Hal’s
Angels, Nice &Easy and several other
groups. Since the Festival, she has
appeared in the San Diego area with
the High Society Jazz Band, Dixie
Express, the Jazz Camp Instructors,
the South Bay Jazz Ramblers and the
San Diego Banjo Band.
In 2007, Chloe studied with Ron
Hockett, the world-class reedman
with Jim Cullum’s Jazz Band in San
Antonio. During the week Chloe
worked with Ron in a master class.
On the weekend she played with the
Cullum Band at the band’s own
“Landing” nightclub, located on the
San Antonio Riverwalk.
In September, she had another
opportunity to study with Ron. The
AFCDJS Board of Directors voted
unanimously to provide financial
assistance for Chloe’s return to San
Antonio and her studies with Ron
Hockett.
Education is an important aspect
of our jazz society. AFCDJS is

PASSINGS
George Olson
(1924-2007)
George Olson, longtime bassist with
the Night Blooming Jazzmen, died at
home on Sept. 6, 2007. A native
Californian, Mr. Olson started as a
violinist, but soon switched to string
bass. He served with the U.S. Navy
during World War II.
In the years following the war, he
played in USO shows and in a new
band organized by a rather famous
relative.... Mr. Olson played with the
San Gabriel Valley Blue Blowers — a
precursor to the Firehouse Five Plus
Two — led by his cousin Ward
Kimball!
Mr. Olson married in 1949 and settled
permanently in Arcadia, California. He
worked in the Los Angeles County
Marshals Office for 25 years. He gave
up the bass temporarily, but resumed
playing in 1968 after becoming
involved in the Society For The
Preservation of Dixieland Jazz. He
was an SPDJ Board Member and also
served as President of the organization.

Bob Solsbak
Festival Sound
From the beginning of his
involvement with the Thanksgiving Jazz
Festival, Bobby Solsbak has shown that
his appreciation of music drives his
enthusiasm for the highest quality audio
during every Thanksgiving Weekend
for the last 20 years.
Bob handles the audio and audio

Festival and works with sound provider
Desmond Warren throughout the
the music started has been so frequent
that many never notice any problems.
During the Festival you will see Bob
walking throughout the venues checking
on the audio levels to insure they do not
get too loud and working with the hotel

comfortable experience for everyone.
For Bob this is not an unusual task as
he developed his talents in the
entertainment industry working first at
Sea World for eight years running the
Shamu Stadium audio and managing all
of the audio and video operators. He
later became the Logistics Manager for
a major production company here in
San Diego where he still works today.
Bob is married and has two children.
Bob’s family is musically talented and
many a weekend is spent playing folk

Solsbak, who both gave many years of
hard work and dedication to our Society
from the inception of the Festival.
While Bobby (now called Bob) was
still in high school, his mother Mary
brought him down to the Festival in the
early ’80s to experience — and become
involved in — the weekend festivities.
Bob handled many duties in the first
couple of years including setting up the
drums, learning how to adjust audio for
the bands, delivering fliers throughout
the hotel and helping Mom and Dad
when needed.
Bob quickly became a valuable and
integral part of the Thanksgiving
weekend with his can-do attitude, his
analytical ability to solve problems and
his quick thinking in times of urgency.
Bob’s uncanny ability to work with the
musicians to alleviate problems and get
JAZZ RAMBLER
At the San Diego Thanksgiving
Dixieland Jazz Festival, the Atlas Foyer
is alive with activities. Music fans are
picking up their badges, checking for
directions at the information booth,
hustling to prime music venues, and
getting ice cream sundaes. One
additional feature in the Atlas Foyer
that cannot be overlooked is actually
the very “foundation” of the festival —
America’s Finest City Dixieland Jazz
Society’s membership table, supervised
by Jean Nielson.
Stop at the table and meet Jean and
her staff of volunteers to learn more
about AFCDJS’s philosophy, goals and

year-round activities. If you are not an
AFCDJS member, the Festival is a
perfect place to sign up. You not only
get your membership and a year’s
subscription to our Jazz Rambler, but
the first 35 to join at Jean’s table will
receive a framed piece of contemporary
art as a “thank you.”
Jean has been a volunteer ever since
our first Festival in 1980. She served
on the AFCDJS Board of Directors for
many years and has overseen the Society
Table for at least 20 years. When not
involved with music, Jean is active with
numerous other philanthropic
organizations. She is a member of Alpha
Iota, a sorority for business women
which supports County Mental Health
programs. She also works with
Elizabeth Hospice of North County and
the Escondido History Center.
Throughout the Festival, Jean’s
husband Howie Nielson will also be at
the Society Table. He is the AFCDJS
Archivist maintaining over 2,000 sheet
music arrangements, so if you would
like information on the Small Band
Music available, contact Howie.
The Festival is a busy event but find
time to stop by the Society Table, say
“hi” to Jean and Howie, check on your
membership, pick up a lanyard, or get a
banjo drawing ticket to support the
Mission Bay Dixie Jazz Band and our
other education programs.

New Orleans Drummer Returns
To 2008 AFCDJS Jazz Camp
By Hal Smith
AFCDJS President
In Post-Katrina New Orleans, the
majority of Crescent City musicians
are struggling to find work. Sue
Fischer is no exception. She has been
fortunate to play a few out-of-town
gigs (such as a Tribute to Bix
Beiderbecke Festival in Racine, WI)
but the local jobs are few and far
between.
She is a drummer with a passion for
the music of Baby Dodds, Zutty
Singleton, Paul Barbarin, Ray Bauduc
and jazzers from “Up the River” —
Chauncey Morehouse, Vic Berton,
Stan King and Ben Pollack.
On occasion Sue is able to play
clubs like the Palm Court, with top
New Orleans jazzmen such as Steve
Pistorius, Tom Fischer, David
Boeddinghaus, Al Bernard and
Freddie Lonzo. Those gigs, while
rare, provide Sue with an opportunity

to play the classic ’20s style with
musicians who appreciate her
dedication to vintage drumming.
Sue spends quite a bit of time
studying the drumming on historic
recordings and once in a while is able
to pick up some pointers from local
drummers like Herlin Riley and
Gerald French. When Sue attended
the 2007 AFCDJS Adult Jazz Camp,
she found the instrumental instruction
and the student band sessions to be
particularly helpful. It was a pleasure
for the Jazz Camp faculty to work
with a student who is interested in the
historical aspects of the music and
who understands how those traditions
have shaped the traditional jazz we
enjoy today.
At the October, 2007 AFCDJS
Board of Directors meeting, a motion
was made to offer Sue a scholarship
to next year’s camp. The motion was
immediately seconded and carried,
with a heartfelt comment from Board
Member Jane Brown, “Let’s support
a New Orleans musician!” The
officers and directors of AFCDJS
agree wholeheartedly. We are looking
forward to working with Sue Fischer
once again at the 2008 Adult
Traditional Jazz Camp!

and Jimmy Yancey and refined into something finer. When
listening to Albert’s wonderful recordings such as “Shout
for Joy,” “Boogie Woogie Blues,” “Chicago in Mind” and
“The Boogie Rocks” one is struck by the purity of his
playing and his musical vision. There is a notable absence of
flashiness but there is a great deal of genuine power and
feeling is present.
Living the musician’s lifestyle was tough on Albert and
when he died in 1949 he was only 42 years old. He had
experienced some bumps in the road along the way including
cutting off the tip of one of his fingers while making a
sandwich (male musicians should always have their wives
do this for them). Also, he suffered paralyses in his hands for
a period. I have heard that when he did return to playing he
used only the little finger and thumb of his left hand. Indeed
his later recordings for Commodore and Mercury do feature
bass patterns composed of single notes as opposed to the
thicker chordal basses of the earlier sides such as “Boogie
Woogie Stomp” and “Shout for Joy.”
Shortly before his death Albert played at President Harry
S. Truman’s inauguration. We devotees of the boogie woogie
genre would tend to agree that it is Albert Ammons who
qualifies as president of that particular domain.
Carl Sonny Leyland is an internationally-recognized
authority on Boogie Woogie Piano and is considered to be
one of the best living pianists playing the style.

They Called it Jazz
Albert Ammons — Boogie Woogie Piano Giant
(This is the 66th in a series of
biographies of great traditional jazz
musicians.)
By Carl Sonny Leyland
Albert Ammons, along with Meade
“Lux” Lewis and Pete Johnson was
one of the “Big Three” of boogie
woogie piano.
Like Lewis, Ammons was a
Chicagoan. In fact the two had known
each other as teenagers and had gone
on to live in the same apartment block
on Prairie Avenue. Also present there
was boogie pioneer Clarence
“Pinetop” Smith who influenced the
two pianists. Smith’s “Pinetop’s
Boogie Woogie” of 1928 was the first
record to contain the term boogie
woogie in the title. It is reputed that
before his untimely death (the unlucky
result of his being hit by a stray bullet)
Pinetop asked Albert to learn his
boogie woogie which Albert did —
reworking it into his powerhouse
piece “Boogie Woogie Stomp.” His
first recording of the tune was made
in 1936 with his group “Albert
Ammons Rhythm Kings.”
Over the years that group
contained such notables as Guy Kelly,
Hot Lips Page, Israel Crosby, Ike
Perkins, Don Byas and Vic
Dickenson. Their recording of
“Swanee River Boogie” was a million
seller.
Albert’s early learning came from
watching piano rolls and trying to put
his fingers on the keys as they went
down. It is said that the special sound
of his chordal tremolos was the result
of this practice. Other early influences include Hersal Thomas, a
teenage pianist from Texas who died
at age 18. Thomas was one of the
most popular rent party players around
Chicago as was Jimmy Blythe who
also influenced Ammons. Doug
Suggs, a shadowy figure who had
brought the tune “Sweet Patootie”
from St Louis to Chicago, had given
Albert some pointers. Albert did
record “Sweet Patootie” for the
Library of Congress and he mentions
AMERICA’S FINEST CITY
Doug Suggs in the spoken part of the
session. The influence of Alabama
pianist Charles “Cow Cow” Davenport can be heard in Albert’s “Bass
Goin’ Crazy” which resembles
Davenport’s piano roll performance
of “5th Street Blues” — a tune which
he also recorded with vocalist Ivy
Smith as “State Street Jive.”
Ammons, Johnson and Lewis along
with blues shouter Big Joe Turner
achieved widespread popularity after
their performance at John Hammond’s
Spirituals to Swing concert at
Carnegie Hall. The concert included
such notables as Benny Goodman,
Count Basie and Big Bill Broonzy
who Ammons accompanied. However
it was the Boogie Woogie Boys who
reputedly stole the show that night —
bringing boogie woogie into the
public eye and starting a nationwide
craze which spawned such popular
spinoffs as “Down the Road Apiece,”
“Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar”
and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” to
name a few.
Though entertaining, the pop tunes
of the boogie idiom were far removed
from the original concept of Ammons,
Johnson and Lewis. It is their playing
that represents the zenith of the form
born out of the influence of Pinetop
Smith, Cow Cow Davenport, Doug
Suggs, Hersal Thomas, Eddie Miller
