Seven of us (Cynthia
and I, Pat & Merv and the
three Aljoes) made our
way to Jacksonville on the
20th of May for the
Mustang Club of
America’s River City
National. It wasn’t without
a hitch. The Aljoes and
Cynthia and I left out of
Lakeland around 6:00 pm
for a leisurely ride up to
Jacksonville. Just outside
of Deltona Russ pulled
over, as it appeared some
kind of rubber had come
off the car. After a quick
look around the car
everything looked fine. We
eased our way back onto

I-4 only to pull off about
300 yards later as his car
was shaking quite
vigorously. Upon further
inspection it was
determined that the tire
was falling apart and a
large chunk on the inner
side of the rear tire was
missing.
So now we had to
determine do we limp
down the road for another
few miles and take a
chance or call a tow truck.
A tow truck it was, since
all the area stores
(including Wal-Mart) were
closed for the evening.
We were still about 120
miles from Jacksonville.
Luckily, we had AAA Plus
towing so that got us to
Jacksonville without
costing the Aljoes an arm
and a leg.
Then it was up and at
’em early on Saturday to
get four new tires. Even
that wasn’t without a
mishap as one of the
security locks got messed
up, requiring a few of the
studs to be replaced.
Meanwhile, Cynthia and I
went ahead and got my
car washed and made it to
the show on time.

Pony Tales by Mark Houlahan
It seemed only a short
time ago that I was driving
Dawn and our newborn
son home from Lakeland
Regional. Kyle actually
came home from the
hospital in my ’90
Mustang that I still drive
every day. It doesn’t look
as nice as it did then, but
we’re talking 18 years ago
and 18 summers of
Florida sun, over 200,000
miles (100K plus on the
347 stroker that’s in it
now!), and three interior
carpets ago!
So it was a real eye
opener when I watched
our first born walk across
the stage at the Lakeland
Center last Friday night for
graduation ceremonies of
the Kathleen High School
class of 2011. Long time
members, like Jack and
Bootsie Smith, remember
Kyle (and Shelby) as
babies, literally growing up
with the club. Now he’s
graduated with honors,
was #16 in his class of
over 350 graduates, and
has the highest ACT
score, at 31 points, of his
school. If you’re not
aware, 36 is the maximum
point scale on the ACT!
Kyle was also honored
earlier in the week at the
KHS awards breakfast.

Member Spotlight: Brett Aljoe
Brett Aljoe, what a
wonderful guy, except he
likes neither long talks, nor
long walks on the beach,
but he does like mustangs!
I was pretty much born
and raised right here in
good ol Lakeland back on
July 22, 1982, and yes my
birthday is next month,
YAY! I became a member
of the club back in 2003
under my parents. But it
wasn’t until July of 2005
that I had my very own
Mustang, which was a
2001 Oxford White V-6
with a 5-speed. As many
of you well know that I sold
the ’01 on May 6, 2011
and picked up a ’90
Mustang GT hatchback
with a 5-speed the very
next day from a youngster
in New Smyrna Beach. I
am having a lot of fun with
it! In due time the ’90 will
be in show ready shape. I
have held the Vice
Presidency role twice, the
MCA Director role once,
and I’ve also been on the
board of directors since
I’ve been in the club, and
who knows I may just run
for the President’s spot
some time. I’ve always
enjoyed the club activities
and our annual Mustangs
and Mustangs: Legends
Havin’ Fun show, and yes
day of show is MINE, that
is my favorite job of the
whole show!

Mustang Fun Facts for June
On June 6th, 1976 the Mustang Club of America
(MCA) held their first ever cruise in and picnic at
Calloway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia.
This year the MCA is celebrating 35 years as
our national club. I remember being at the MCA
20th Anniversary Show at Atlanta Motor Speedway
with my ’90 Mustang, back when it was a weekend
show car!

turn to take that walk!
Amazing!

FINALLY, the Aljoes
cruised in at 11:00 and
joined the rest of the over
400 Mustangs (of all years
and styles).
All the problems paid
off though, as the Aljoes
won Second place in
Modified as well as the
Hardship award. The
Regos corralled a First
Place in Modified too.
The highlight of the
weekend was on Saturday
night when we cruised
from to downtown
Jacksonville. Roughly
100-120 Mustangs
participated. The local
police shut down I-95 and
all the downtown streets
for a police escort and we
had the road to ourselves.
It was an experience I will
never forget.
Special thanks go out
to Stan Billicky for putting
on our Black Jack run to
Webster a few weeks ago.

Congratulations go out to

A special thanks to all
those who came out to the

past Saturday. A special
thanks for our own club

for inviting us to this show.
I know with the
summer months (and
heat) coming our way we
will all be busy. For those
of us that are around let’s

See you on Thursday.
