Each November we collect peanut butter as a donation to PACT.
We have found out that they need so much more than that. They
are in great need of personal items, such as: toothbrushes,
toothpaste, soap, deodorant, and personal female items.
The board has discussed this issue, and we believe that we, as
a Society, can do so much more to help.

About Us
The Scottish Society of Louisville was
established in 1993 as a nonprofit
organization to enrich the cultural
lives of members in the Kentuckiana
area.
The Society offers exposure to
Scottish heritage and preserves,
enhances and fosters pride in our
Scottish ancestry.
In addition to the many local and
regional activities that it sponsors, the
Society is also a member of World
Communities in Louisville and has
national and international affiliations
with other Scottish organizations.
The Scottish Society of Louisville is a
nonsectarian organization. There is
no religious affiliation.

Clan Anderson is this year’s

very interesting insight into her

From the President
If you weren't at our May meeting, YOU MISSED IT! Matt Wallace of Kentucky Shakespeare Festival gave a lively and
informative presentation about Shakespeare, the man and his enduring appeal. He also gave us a sneak peak at the upcoming
performance of Macbeth. Some of the special effects are going to be quite impressive. SSL will have a booth at the Saturday, July
11, performance in Central Park. Come join us; after all, how many opportunities do you get to tartan-up? We are told that food
trucks and the Bard's Tavern will also be available.
The Scottish Society was delighted to present the William Wallace Junior Drummer of the Day award to not just one, but two,
recipients at the Glasgow Highland Games. Please see the column in this newsletter which is dedicated to those deserving young
ladies.
A BIG thank you to the folks who "worked" at our tent at Glasgow. There was a huge turnout, and we were able to help set some
on the exciting path toward exploring their Scottish heritage and assisting others in going deeper than they have before.
That Janice Beatty held her Second Annual Campfire/Roundup at the Games proved her dedication and determination - if not
outright stubbornness. She jumped through quite a few hoops to make it happen, and all very much appreciated and enjoyed the
event. Janice, will there be a THIRD annual event?
Finally, we look forward to meeting you at this month's meeting on June 23. Why not bring a friend?
REMEMBER: This month's collection for the Portland Avenue Community Trust will be dish and laundry detergent. Thanks in
advance for your support.
Jenny D.

Information For Our New Members
Welcome to our new members. Coming into a new group can be a little scary, but know that if you have any
questions, just ask. The people in the SSL are some of the friendliest you would ever want to meet. Here is a little bit of info to
get you started:
Read the newsletter and the website. All upcoming events will be listed both places. If you want more information, you
can contact any of the board members. Their information is found on the last page of this newsletter.
All meetings will have a business meeting, some time to socialize, and a program.
January/February brings our Burns Night Dinner. You won’t want to miss that. There will be food, drink, raffles,
entertainment, and an all-around good time.
May starts our “Event” season. The Society sets up a booth at many local and state Scottish and Celtic events, and even a
couple of out-of-state events. Don’t be afraid. Jump on in and help us in our booth. It’s not hard, and everyone will help. It is a
great way to get to know some of the members
November is a really fun meeting. We have a potluck dinner and an auction. Members will be informed of what type of
dish to bring according to last name. The auction is so much fun. Everyone is asked to bring at least one item, if they wish, to
donate. Now, you will find that a lot of the items are things you would love to have, but some of them … well, you just have to
be there to appreciate it. Proceeds benefit the Heritage Fund, which helps promote the study of Celtic-related “studies” by
individuals.
In December, we do not have a meeting.
Please visit the table that is set up at our meetings. You will find brochures for upcoming games, magazines, SSL items
that are for sale, and many other things.
We hope that you will attend as many meetings as possible (hopefully all of them). We are so happy to have you as a part
of the group.
Heritage Fund
The Heritage Fund Committee is accepting applications for the June, 2015 dispersal of scholarship funds. The Fund helps
support the efforts of SSL members to pursue studies of the many different aspects of Celtic culture, which may include music
(piping, drumming, fiddling, etc.), art (dancing, weaving, etc.), language (Gaelic, etc.) and athletics (Highland games).
This Fund can also support a person’s interest in an educational program or project that furthers the understanding of
Scottish culture and history.
Scottish Society members in good standing can apply for funds or can sponsor non-members for scholarships.
The application form and guidelines for applying can be picked up on the evening of the Society’s monthly meeting from the
Heritage Fund Committee Chairperson, Janice Beatty, or by e-mail at [email protected], or by going to the form
here.
The deadline for applications for the June dispersal is May 31, 2015.

In the past year, we have seen significant determination and progress in this young player. She has
become a playing member in our grade 5 competition band and competes in solo events. She is learning
to put together scores and anxious to learn more advanced flourishing. She learns quickly, is a good
player and we are proud to have her with us here at the Glasgow games.
