A confined space is any space including vessel, chamber, tank, silo, pit or other similar space that is largely enclosed (not always entirely) that contains a foreseeable specified risk of serious injury. A ‘specified risk’ can be any of the following: • Fire or explosion causing serious injury • Gas, fume, vapour or lack of oxygen causing loss of consciousness • Increase in body temperature causing loss of consciousness • Increase in the level of liquid causing drowning • Free flowing solids causing asphyxiation Why do we need Confined Space Training? In 1997, Confined Space Regulations were introduced in order to improve safety in Confined Spaces. It is now enshrined in law that anyone involved with entering, controlling or supervising people working in a confined space must have received training. Failure to comply with these Regulations can result in prosecution. People are killed or seriously injured in confined spaces every year in the UK. This includes a large number of people trying to rescue others without sufficient training or equipment. A hierarchy of control must be considered prior to commencing work. The first point to consider is, can the work be done another way to avoid entry? The Confined Space Regulations state the following: • • • Avoid entry to confined spaces e.g. by doing work from outside If entry to a confined space is unavoidable, follow a safe system of work Put in place adequate emergency arrangements before the work starts The main danger is an untested atmosphere which may be oxygen deficient or contain atmospheric contaminants. Your brain will be unable to identify these dangers and a Gas Detector or Atmospheric Monitor MUST be used. 26 email: [email protected] tel: 01785 850333 Confined Spaces Confined Space Awareness Course Aim: To provide delegates with the knowledge to enable them to safely recognise a confined space and appreciate the implications.
