Six months have passed since our first launch and many important and positive things have happened for our project since then. I would like to highlight one of them above all others, because it represents a tremendous achievement for all of us involved in this challenge and a great benefit to our customers and airlines. I am talking about the completion of the substructure (KD43). We have achieved this critical date 37 days ahead of schedule. This milestone is one of the 3 most important on the project, along with making the Building weather-tight and the completion of the work. The fact that we have made it ahead of programme means a great benefit to BAA and stakeholders. I want to personally thank you all for the hard work you've done to achieve this and I want to encourage you to carry on working with the same vigor and dedication to continue to get all our objectives. Pablo Riesco, HETCo Director “Just wanted to let you know I bragged about HETCo’s performance regarding the trigger achievement on T2A. You all did very well in bringing that milestone ahead. Thanks from my team to yours.” Steve Morgan, BAA Capital Director Going Silver The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) held several award ceremonies around the country over the months of March and April. We are extremely proud to be able to announce that we have been awarded a Silver Site Award for our Terminal 2 A site. Since the CCS came into existence in 1997, there have been annual awards given to the most considerate sites in the UK who take part in this voluntary scheme of good and considerate practices. The Scheme is a national initiative set up by the Construction industry to improve its image. The principal areas that the construction industry as a whole is concerned with are: the environment, the workforce, and the general public. Jim Farquharson accepted the award on behalf of HETCo at an award ceremony in London on 6th April. “This is a great measurement of how we are performing on site - not merely from a programme and quality perspective but also regarding our behaviour in this highly sensitive location. We should all be very proud of what this award represents for us and I would like to say a big thank you to all of you for your contribution to this success”. Project Update On Wednesday 23 March 11 there was an incident on site which ended a period of 1.3 million man-hours being worked without a reportable accident. The accident was as a result of a crane driver falling from his crane whilst taking a ‘short cut’ back to his cab and reduces the HETCo 12 month rolling AFR to 0.09. Immediate site workforce meetings were held to emphasize that everyone is responsible for their own safety and also that of their working comrades – it was stressed that extra vigilance and care was needed and zero tolerance was an absolute priority. With regards to progress, early achievement of Key Date 43 by the end of March was reached (as mentioned above)– this some 6 weeks earlier than the contractual Key Date. Also FIVE out of FIVE target milestones were achieved in the month (eight out of Having regained their programme, Watson continued their nighteight achieved this year to date). shift work up until the Easter break to create a ‘shock absorber’ and allow progress to roof and façade to be completed. Inasus has commenced work on the installation of the apron level façade. The Cooling Station, deep drainage, removal of PQ concrete, pits & ducts for the Stands and the FLaNs all continue to gain momentum. To show this commitment is at the heart of our business, the RFT Poster campaign has been launched. This is to enhance the importance of HETCo delivering a World Class quality Terminal. In so doing, promote HETCo to become BAA’s ‘Partner of First Choice’ for future works. HETCo’s QUALITY Objectives for T2A delivery are to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Plan to get it “Right First Time” every time Make “Quality Standard Achievable & Visible” in your work Keep “Work Error to a Minimum” and all work “Damage Free” Provide “Assurance that the Project Requirements are met Ensure that the installed work (assets) are, fully “Protected, Maintainable, Integrated & Respected” Make T2A the new Industry Benchmark for QUALITY Quality. Designed in. Built in, by you. 0DNH \RXU ZRUN ULJKW ±UVW WLPH HYHU\ WLPH Incident and Injury Free Hector Martin, SRC Upper Floors Project Manager, and Lorna Byrne, H,S&E Advisor, attended the IIF Train the Trainer course in April. Here they are with course organiser, Janet Borejszo, receiving their certificates. The Incident and Injury Free (IIF) Programme is a fundamental ingredient of the T2A Project. Through this programme we want to create a culture free of incident and injuries and ensure everyone returns home safely every day. T2A provides us with an opportunity to excel in regard to safety performance and alter the perception of the construction industry. However, this will only be achieved with commitment and responsibility from all involved. IIF looks to move safety to be a core value for everyone rather than just one of a list of competing priorities. Training for the IIF Programme will be delivered to everyone and all new starters will attend a session within 4 weeks of their arrival. We would like your support and commitment to make this happen and request that attendance at this workshop be a priority. Purely by chance. I took a job as a labourer on a John Laing Construction project, spent a year in a concrete gang and decided to stay in the industry. What was your last personal challenge? Remembering not to come to work on Good Friday. If you could wake up anywhere in the world tomorrow morning, where would you like to be? Bondi Beach would be nice. How do you see the future of HETCo and T2A? We have hit some really important milestones on time and the new building is getting closer and closer to our office every day. When you look around at HETCo, what do you feel most proud of? Seeing the building taking shape. What are the Planning team’s principal milestones achieved? Getting the programme updated and submitted on time every month is a real challenge. What are the challenges that lie ahead for your team? Providing a programme to The Bath Half Do you have a motto that you live by? Everyone can have their say. What gets you up in the morning? Trying to beat the traffic. What made you interested in your line of business? I was interested in how the buildings went together and also liked the idea of starting with a blank sheet of paper and finishing with a functioning building. How has the project changed/developed over the last few months? It was tough going through the winter and progress is picking up with the better weather. Issue 3 manage coordination of the fitting out is going to be a massive task. What is the latest new skill you learned at work? I have spent a bit more time than I expected learning how to use Earned Value properly. What is the latest new skill you learned outside of work? I have been having Tai Chi lessons for a few months. Who would you invite to a fantasy dinner party? Chris Martin – he could show me some guitar chords; Al Pacino would have a few interesting Hollywood stories...as would Marilyn Monroe..and Andrew Strauss because I NEVER get tired of hearing about winning the Ashes! What would you like to happen before the end of the year? A lottery win and being on programme Who has influenced you the most? Lots of people, but mainly a couple of former bosses who allowed me to learn from my own mistakes. Teodoro Alvarez, Design Director (4th from left), Guillermo Ripado, TITLE, (7th from left), Pablo Riesco, HETCo Director (8th from left), Antonio Rubio, Project Manager: Envelope, 9th from left) BATH HALF MARATHON, affectionately known as the “Bath Half” is one of the longest existing half marathons and most popular city runs around today. It certainly was among our HETCo team as many of you chose to run the 13.1 miles along and around the river Avon on 6th March 2011. Apart from being one of the biggest social events this year (families and friends flocked to the West for the show!) the personal challenge it posed for all participants was immense. Everyone made sure to make the most of the race and to achieve what they set out to do. Pablo Riesco, Hetco Director, ran to “...finish the run first of all. Then to finish it under two hours. Then to finish the run before someone who shall remain unnamed!” He managed to reach all three of his goals finishing the race, his first ever, in 1:55. Teodoro Alvarez, Design Director, was also running his first half marathon in Bath. He completed in 2:14 and is looking forward to the rest of his marathon career! David Fanjul, previously Civils Contracts Manager, ran across the finishing line as the clock struck 1:40:02 just beaten by Guillermo Ripado, Contracts Manager, 1:40:01. Antonio Rubio, Project Manager - Envelope, was very pleased to have finished at 2:07 but has since been seriously bitten by the half marathon bug and completed another one last week in Spain at under 2 hours...so practice does make perfect?! HETComms ...are you? We are in search of more hopefuls to enter the challenge of a lifetime. Calling out to everyone involved on this mammoth project, JV members, suppliers, subcontractors, clients...if you are interested in taking part in the endurance and fitness test of the year, contact John Thompson [email protected] 07766 342 946 please send all comments & suggestions to Laura Francesca Brown at [email protected] 3 sofar:Layout 1 12/05/2011 19:57 Page 4 HETComms May/June 2011 who’s who: HETCo planning team Issue 3 Planners L-R: Arthur Cliffe, Kevin Wilmot,Simon Stirrett, Matt Maciejewski, Neal Sagar, Garry Garson, Mike Roast, Spencer Calaharn, Tony Hawke. I am fast approaching the end of my 4th yr (of 5) and I’m looking forward to finishing and getting my life back! I spend the majority of my free time with my partner Claire and our 9 month old son Finley. I enjoy most sports; running, keeping fit and am a boxing enthusiast.
