ES-SELAMU ALEIKUM . . .
GREETINGS TO ALL NOBLES AND LADIES OF BOUMI TEMPLE,
B
y the time you read this, spring will
almost be over with summer on its
way. March was busy with Past Potentate
Paul Reinke Jr.’s testimonial, as well as the
Bull and Oyster Roast that was chaired
by Past Potentate Charles Johnston.
Thanks to his efforts, everyone had a
great time. Once again, the Easter Party
for the little ones was a great success.
Our Clowns deserve a big thank you for
all of their hard work in entertaining the
children. And, thanks to Chairman Tom
Downey, everyone enjoyed the great
show at Sight and Sound.
After the April business meeting,
where we obligated 26 new Boumi
Shriners, over 50 members and our
ladies ventured to Europe for a cruise
down the Rhine River. Thanks to the
early efforts of Chairman Fred Reitz,
P.P., who unfortunately had some health
issues and could not travel, everyone
had a super time. While we were gone,
the younger generation had the ’80s
dance, which was chaired by Assistant
Rabban Mark Hartz. We are told that
it was a packed house and the joint was
jumping. Hats off to Mark and his group
for making it a success.
Support the Boumi Carnival June
1–6. Come out with friends and family
and enjoy the evening, which includes
good entertainment and refreshments
for everyone. Don’t forget the business
meeting/ceremonial on June 13—let’s
hope we have a large group of candidates.
Keep asking your Blue Lodge to invite our
membership team to give a presentation
about the Shrine. Chairman Ernie
Palmer, oriental guide, and his team are
primed and ready; and if they cannot be
present, Chief Ambassador Ed DeWaters
and some of the Past Potentates will be
happy to attend.
The Golf Classic is on July 13 at
the Hunt Valley Golf Club. See the
ad on page 13 and get your foursome
signed up. We still have seats left on
the bus trips this fall, as well as on the
Transatlantic Cruise in October. Call the
chairmen and join us. The Sportsmen’s
Day tickets are available and need to be
sold to your family and friends if it is
to be successful. And lastly, don’t forget
to sign up for the Beer Brigade! Call
Chairman Ray Link. (You can also ask
him about MASA in September.)
As we have said before, there is always
something happening at Boumi Shrine,
where your families and friends can have
a great time doing whatever it may be on
that day. Remember, you come, too, and
we can all HELP KEEP the FAITH.
Yours in faith,
Wm. Raymond Bosley Jr.

he Potentate and the Membership
Committee have lowered the
amount of money that is required to
become a Shriner. They have been
going out and speaking at any lodge
that asks them. Talk to the Master
of your lodge and get him to ask
the Potentate and the Membership
Committee to come join you. Or, you
can help by speaking to your lodge
yourself. The idea is to show the
lodges that we are interested in them,
not just in taking someone away from
them.
Over the summer, when things
slow down, is a great time to work
on getting new members. It is a
time when all of us have a little less
to do and we can focus more on
membership. Remember, we have
averaged a little over 10 new members
a month this year.
Now as things slow down and we
travel on vacations and other trips,
never forget to be careful so that we
all can return together in the fall.
May God Bless and keep each and
every one of you in the palm of his
hand until we meet again in the fall.

You are now a member of this very Illustrious Shrine, and
we urge that you take advantage of its many privileges. Activities are diversified and continuous at Boumi Shrine. Designed mainly to stimulate fun, joy and good fellowship, it is
ever the aim of our offices and committees to plan for every
Noble’s interest and pleasure. That you will join active participation in Boumi Shrine’s functions is our sincere hope.
Your interest and inclusion are certain to bring you the full
share of dividends to which every Boumi Noble is entitled.
Knights of Mecca
Colonel’s Staff
Noble Donald C. Lewis
Colonel
Well, here we are with the year half gone and the best part is
yet to come. We, as Boumi Shriners, have been busy with the
parades. The first was Glen Bernie in May, which is always
a nice little parade to start the season off; June 28 is the
Hereford parade; July 4 is the Catonsville parade; and let’s
not forget the Imperial Parade on July 7 in Houston, Texas.
I guess it pays sometimes to cancel meetings. That is just
what we had to do for the March Unit Heads meeting due
to bad weather. So we called a special meeting for April and
what a turn out—of 15 units, 9 were present and 3 clubs
also showed up. Nobles, we had 35 to 40 present that night,
which is the most who have attended in the past three years.
Let’s keep it up.
On June 13, Boumi will hold a Business Meeting and
Ceremonial. This starts at 9 a.m. We have more than 36 new
members who will be taking part in this ceremonial. As
members of Boumi, we need to show them what we are all
about. Come out and support the Knights of Mecca as they
do the work and meet these new members. Make them feel
at home in Boumi.
At the Spring MASA in March, it was announced that
the temples who have units in competition as well as in the
parade will receive 50 extra points--last year we only received
five. To the motorized units, it is not how fast you do your
demonstration but how safe you do it. Last year, again, a
spectator almost got hit, which we do not want to happen.
To all the nobles and their ladies, the Illustrious Sir and
the Boumi units have many events planned for the year. Join
in and enjoy the great fellowship we call “Shrinedom.”
Noble Kostas “Gus” Vourvoulas
President
I’m sure many of you have wondered, “Where are the Knights
of Mecca?” “Are they still a part of the Shrine?” Well, indeed
we are still alive and very healthy residing in our beautiful
Boumi Shrine Temple. The Knights of Mecca has been very
active as the ritual team that represents the Potentate and the
Shrine in Blue Lodges conferring the Master Mason degree.
The purpose of the Knights of Mecca is to build a closer
relationship with all Masonic bodies, especially the Blue
Lodges, and to emphasize that there is an intimate connection
between Shrinedom and Masonry. We pride ourselves on
the work we do and make every effort to make our visit a
learning and enjoyable experience to every lodge we attend.
Since March of 2008, the Knights of Mecca have conferred
the Master Mason Degree on over 200 Brothers.
If your lodge would like to have the Knights of Mecca visit
and confer the Master Mason Degree, or if you are a Past
Master who enjoys participating in ritual work and would
like to join us, please contact Noble Bob Chase, second vice
president, at 410-916-6528 or [email protected].
We look forward to hearing from you.

Gun Club
Noble Charles Leight
President
The Gun Club awarded three life
memberships at the April meeting.
Nobles Walter “Jack” Carew, Ken
Nickoles and Sam McConnell received
this distinguished recognition for
their years of service to the club.
Congratulations to each.
As weather is getting better, the
shooting is improving and we have seen
a number of new shooters coming out.
We will continue to have fun shoots as
well as our trophy competition as we
prepare for the Tri-Temple shoot in
August. Raja Temple will be the host.
We are trying some new things in
the club, such as catered or customized
meals, more shooting prizes, and short
meetings, all while keeping costs to
a minimum. If you have ideas that
would enrich our sport come on out
and share. We are hoping to have a
Fathers’ Day shoot in June. This could
be an exciting family event. Sons and
grandsons will be welcome to join in
and we will introduce “newbies” to a
fun time.
The winner of the Hoops for LOVE challenge and recipient
of the FEZ CUP is ... Shriners Hospitals for Children —

like to welcome Patrolman Rich Salla as

and is an asset to our Patrol and Boumi.
As I have stated in the previous
Boumi News, we would like to invite
our NEW nobles to Boumi to come
by on the second Monday night of the
month at 7 p.m. for fellowship and
food. We would be honored to have
you as our guests. This invite extends to
fellow nobles and Masons who have not
joined a unit in Boumi. I realized a few
years ago that you really do not get what
the Shrine has to offer until you become
part of a unit like the Arab Patrol. We
have a true Brotherhood and bond.
The OWLS are here! If your wife or
significant other would like to feel a part
of your Shrine experience, we have a
group for them! Our ladies and families
are a big part of a Shriner’s life and we
would like to grow together. Our ladies
will also be building their own bonds
and joining their Patrolmen throughout
the year in events and activities.
Remember your Blue Lodges. Reach
out and let men know what Shrine
Masonry is all about!
For information, please call me at
410-627-9990, e-mail arabpatrol@
boumishriners.com, or hit us up
on Facebook (search “Boumi ArabPatrol”). We are the oldest unit in
Boumi, and we are growing, so come
by and see what it is all about.
Brass Band
Noble A. Harrison Caughey
Bandmaster
A warm welcome from the Brass Band
to all the new Shriners. Look at the
directory on the back cover of this
magazine and you will see the variety
of units and clubs at Boumi, including
the Brass Band (Touch of Class).
The Brass Band used to be a large
marching unit. About 10 years ago,
at a Shrine convention in Baltimore,
a group within Brass Band formed
a smaller group (Touch of Class)
to participate in the dance band
competition. They not only won the
competition, but they had such a good
time that they have continued to exist
ever since. We’re still having fun.
If you play an instrument, consider
Touch of Class. Experience is not
an issue. Are you reluctant because
you haven’t played for a while? Not a
problem. We play for fun. Expertise
is neither required nor expected. The
only expectation is that everyone
attempts to play to the best of his ability.
The marching part is gone, however,
we have our float (a converted transit
bus) and play in parades. Other venues
include retirement communities,
fraternal organizations, Grand Lodge,
charity events, etc.
Visit with us at a Boumi business
meeting or at a rehearsal, which is
on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
For information, contact Noble
Marvin Oed at 410-666-2992 or

BOUMI TEMPLE NEWS
Motor Corps
Noble Don Hurcombe
Captain
Greetings everyone, this year is about to reach the halfway
point and things are going well but they could be better.
Your captain can only have a good year with the members’
support. Our riders should have already been in the Glen
Burnie parade back in May. Coming up are several more
parades which we will be addressed at our meetings.
In April, the Motor Corps was Honor Guard at the
Business Meeting; unfortunately, our group had a very poor
turnout. We don’t know why our members didn’t support
this, which is an embarrassment for the captain. It was a
good meeting, too. We voted on 34 new members and about
25 of those men were sworn in right away. They will take
part in the June Ceremonial.
We welcomed into our unit a new member: Noble Mark
Moore. Congratulations to him. I need to mention he is
also a Past Master of his lodge. Now we have a total of six
Past Masters in our unit. Noble Fred Lunn is an eight-time
master (four different lodges) and Noble Richard Smith is a
seven-time master serving his lodge to keep it in existence.
Our First Lieutenant, Bob Candler (Past Master), is also
a member of the Knights of Mecca and serves in the Grand
Lodge. In fact, he was present at Freedom Lodge (my lodge)
when they visited to put on a third degree for three of our
members. A month later, Bob was back with Boumi Knights
of Mecca to do another third degree for two more of our
members. That is a busy Mason.
When you read the “In Memoriam” page in this magazine
it should make everyone think about getting
a new member or two; let’s try to do
this! In closing, as always, we remind
ALL nobles get out to the Business
Meetings and greet some of our
new members.

Lady Theresa Needer
High Priestess
Thank you to everyone who attended my first meeting in
April. I enjoyed the umbrellas. The Kentucky Derby dinner
in May was a wonderful assemblage of hats and horses. I hope
we have as much fun in the Capital and at the Friendship
Night dinner in September!
Don’t forget that our Grand High Priestess will visit in
July. Please join us for the meeting and dinner on July 11. For
information, contact Teresa Needer at 443-798-0052.
Bou-Tem-Sci
Lady Linda D. Barnes
President
I extend a big, heartfelt thank you and much appreciation
to Nancy Ritter for serving as our president this past year.
Her enthusiasm and dedication has led us through a most
successful and wonderful year, and we are grateful for her
leadership. Nancy is not only my Bou-Tem-Sci sister, she is
my biological sister, and it has been a pleasure and privilege
to serve as her 1st vice president. Also, a thank you goes to
the President’s board for giving help when it was needed.
At our April meeting, the new officers and board were
installed for the coming year. Each person is ready to
continue our work and for our club to prosper. May 18 was
our last meeting before the summer break. At the meeting
we honored mothers and daughters in attendance. Major
Becky Hogg of the Salvation Army spoke as to how the
Salvation Army helped individuals and families through the
year and at Christmas. We gave out 100 Christmas stockings
to the members to fill for children so they will have a happy
Christmas. The Salvation Army will give the stockings to
children who are in need. We all played bingo and had prizes
for the lucky winners.
Our 2nd vice president, Sandy Phillips, has planned our
June 10 outing to Hooper’s Island. This should be a wonderful
day. Plans are being made for our 83rd annual charity
fashion show benefit “Taking Flight for Our Children” on
Oct. 19 beginning at 11 a.m. with lunch at noon. The benefit
will be held at Columbus Gardens, 4301 Klosterman Ave.,
and tickets are $32. Fashions will be from Boscov’s White
Marsh and modeled by our own Bou-Tem-Sci ladies. The
benefit will feature the following tables: bake, jewelry and
treasures/collectibles. Plus, there will be three raffles: 50-50,
baskets of pleasures, and the Potentate’s gift. To receive a
fashion show flyer with a reservation slip, please call Linda
Barnes at 443-604-3402.
Our next meeting, which is the beginning of our new
season, will be Sept. 21 at Columbus Gardens. Doors open at
11 a.m. and lunch is at noon. We will have a delicious lunch,
a short meeting, and great entertainment. Please join us for
a delightful afternoon. Have a wonderful, safe, and relaxing
summer, and I look forward to seeing you in September.
Blues Band
Noble Andy Anders
President
Hope everyone is having a good spring after the winter we
had. This is just a little note to remind you to come out and
listen to the band at the Boumi Carnival at 6 p.m. on June
5. If you are interested in having our club play at your
affair, please contact Andy Anders at 410-296-1668.

Rain, snow, and cold of winter are in
the past, but they will return. Enjoy
the summer while it is here.
The Photo Staff is still looking for
new members or old members who
want to get back taking pictures.
If your unit wants pictures taken of
your line officers or an album of your
year as head of your unit, please let us
know. We can do just about anything
you need as far as pictures, albums,
posters, mugs or whatever you may
need. If we can’t do it ourselves, we
know someone who can.
We will see you at Boumi Business
Meetings, Boumi Events, Unit and
Club events. Don’t forget the Beer
Brigade, they can use your help too.
Support Boumi, your unit and
clubs, and do not forget your Blue
Lodge. That is where new Shriners
come from.
Boumi Ladies
Catonsville S.C.
Ladies, it looks like warm weather is
finally here and we can begin to enjoy
some sunshine. Finally, we are able to
attend the rest of our scheduled meeting
without the worry of bad weather. We
will all be looking forward to being
together for the next few months.
This year we have welcomed a few
new members. Thanks for joining us
ladies. I know you will love being with
all your new friends as well as the old.
Boumi Ladies are the best!! Ladies,
please invite some of your friends to
join us. Also, please remember our
friends who are not able to join us due
to illness. I now know how wonderful
it is to receive a card or phone call—it
really helps. Let’s have a great summer!!
By this time, some are wondering,
why it is so hot? They forgot how cold
it was not so long ago. Our upcoming
parades are in Catonsville on July 4, at
the Imperial Session in Houston, Texas,
and then in Virginia Beach for MASA.
In May, we went to Charlestown
at the Fire Side Restaurant thanks to
Noble Bo Barranger, past president.
On July 16, we will go to Toby’s Dinner
Theater to see “1776.” In September,
we will meet at Noble Skip and Lady
Nadine Merkle’s house for a cookout.
Don’t forget the Color Guard’s
Breakfasts at Skip and Nadine’s—it is
always fun with good food and great
fellowship—June 14, July 19, and
Aug. 23.

Noble Jay F. Parson
Captain
Once again, your number one Boumi Color Guard will
hold its annual breakfasts at 3106 Hernwood Road—home
of Past Potentate “Skip” Merkle and his lady Nadine. We
serve breakfast as our only Color Guard fundraiser on the
following Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: June 14,
July 19, and Aug. 23.
Flyers will be available in all unit heads’ and club presidents’
mailboxes by Memorial Day. Please invite your friends and
family for a great time! We will serve eggs, pancakes, creamed
chipped beef, hash brown potatoes, biscuits, sausage, fresh
fruit cup, orange juice, tomato juice and coffee. After noon,
“eye openers” will be available for purchase.
Get-well wishes and prayers go out to Lady Ellie and her
nurse “Earl.” Please keep them both in your prayers as well as
all others battling health problems and caring for loved ones.
I wish to thank you for your prayers and concern as
my Dad and associate member, Willard Parson, has been
battling some health issues these past months. Hopefully he
is on the mend!
Have a wonderful Memorial Day, and please remember
those who fought and served for our freedom. Thank our
veterans when you encounter them!
Hamilton Shrine Club
Noble Willard Wymer
President
Finally, spring has sprung and those snow days are behind
us. As we move forward, I would like to thank all nobles and
ladies for making our club a success. We have signed up five
new members this year. I want to say a special thank you to
Secretary Rowlan Stumpf who puts in numerous hours to
keep our club going.
In March, we had a presentation by the Shriners Hospitals
for Children in Philadelphia, which everyone enjoyed. At the
April meeting, thanks again to Rowlan, we were all initiated
as “Turtles” and became members of that prestigious order.
In May we had amateur night at our club.
Don’t forget nobles, ladies, friends and guests are invited
to Friendly Farm Restaurant on June 25 at 6 p.m. The cost
is $35 per person. Please contact Rowlan at 410-592-6428 or
[email protected] for reservations.
I hope everyone has an enjoyable and healthy summer.
Ambassadors
Noble Edward A. DeWaters III
Chief
Our 2015 Chief Ambassador Edward A. DeWaters III wants
to take this opportunity to thank all of the Ambassadors
and nobility who have participated in our many functions
this year. It has truly been a wonderful sharing of fellowship
between brothers and their families. Here are several more
upcoming activities to continue this great fun and fellowship!
On June 14 from 1 to 5 p.m., we will have a second
reappointment meeting and family picnic in the Boumi
Pavilion. Since this is Flag Day, come out in your red, white
and blue to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, and sausages on the
grill. We hope everyone will bring their favorite picnic side
dish. Call Noble Joe Baird with your reservation and dish at
410-335-6618.
Our annual Crab Feast is on Aug. 20. This is our only
fundraiser for the Ambassadors. Noble Bill Mezoff is in
charge of this event. He always does a remarkable job. The
cost is still only $38 per person. Order your tickets early, as
this is open to all nobility members, family, and friends. For
information, contact Bill at 410-661-2816.
Chief “Eddie” wants to remind all nobles of several items
that need your help. Boumi Shrine’s membership is at a
crucial number—approximately 2,300 members. For the last
several years we have had more members passing than new
ones joining. Our future is the membership, and I am asking
all Ambassadors to ask their Blue Lodges if we could give
a short presentation (5-10 minutes) about the benefits of
becoming a Boumi Shriner. I would also like to have contact
information for anyone who is in line in his Blue Lodge, so
that we can ask for permission to speak on a Lodge Night.
Please contact Noble Karl Ballwanz at 443-324-5507 with the
updated information, which we will share with the Grand
Lodge. You can help improve the membership by making
just a few phone calls.
One of the major fundraisers for Boumi this year is the
Sportsmen’s and Cash Giveaway on Sept. 19 from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. The raffle includes a number of different guns and
rifles, including a crossbow, as well as cash prizes. Tickets
are $10 each from which the Ambassadors get a dollar back
on each sale. Food and beverages will be served.
The best of everything throughout this coming year to all,

In Memoriam
“There was a friend whose heart was good. He walked with men and understood. His was
a voice that spoke to cheer, and felt like music on the ear. His was a smile men loved to see.
His was a hand that asked no fee for friendliness or kindness done. And now that he has
journeyed on, his is a fame that never ends—He leaves behind countless friends.”

100 Million Dollar Club
Noble James G. Cullison
Chairman
E
ach month I look for reasons why you should join the
100 Million Dollar Club, but basically, our main reason
is the same—our hospitals and the children for which we
care. With the continuing advances in technology, new
discoveries and methods in medicine, and the competition
to attract the finest health care professionals, our hospitals
are in need of more money.
Every month we publish the names and organizations
of those who donated and joined this elite club. In this
issue I want to list, and publicly thank, those nobles,
individuals, and organizations that have answered my call
and donated to and joined the 100 Million Dollar Club so
far this quarter. They are: Scimeter Club, Mrs. Dorothy E.
Frederick, Noble and Mrs. George M. Daneker and Dan,
Noble Robert M. Bare, Noble Irvin J. Crowl Jr., Noble
Edward A. DeWaters III, Noble Frederick C. Jessops Jr.,
Noble Robert W. and Lady Carol T. Kamps, Noble Martin
E. Marvel, Noble David F. McManus, Noble James C.
Morris, Mrs. Mildred D. Spath, Stephen and Sherye Lynn
(Spath) Sedlak, and Jimmy and Mattie Kirk. Won’t you
join this elite group by becoming a member of the 100
Million Dollar Club?
The two primary ways to contribute to this fund and
become a member include:
1. A bequest to the Shriners Hospitals in your will.
2. A cash donation to the fund during your lifetime.
This contribution can be made as often as you wish,
and the only criterion is that the contribution must
be in the amount of at least $100.
Why not return the enrollment form on this page with
Have You Thought About This?
IT IS A GREAT IDEA . . . WHY NOT JOIN?
