GREETINGS TO ALL NOBLES AND LADIES OF BOUMI TEMPLE,
I
t appears that spring is finally
here. I’m thrilled that the warm
weather has arrived and I’m looking
forward to more and more activities
at Boumi Temple. Everything is
going extremely well at Boumi. I am
grateful for all of the support I have
been receiving from the various units
and clubs.
Thank you for supporting the
St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Ocean
City, Md. The parade was very
well attended and everyone had a
wonderful time. I would also like to
thank the Ocean City Shrine Club
for changing the date of their regular
meeting and inviting the Boumi
Shriners—we all enjoyed attending.
I want to thank First Lady Beth
Frevel for having the ladies activities
during the monthly business
meetings. This has increased the
attendance of our monthly meetings
and the ladies have truly enjoyed the
opportunity to socialize
with one another. I also
want to thank Noble
Ed Blake, the Abetoor,
for escorting me into the
meetings. One suggestion to
the Abetoor: please keep your
shoes on!
Ill. Sir Jim Davis, P.P., and Noble
Dave Wagner have been donating
their time and working tirelessly
for the Shriners Hospitals for
Children—Philadelphia. I would
appreciate it if all of the nobles
could thank Jim and Dave for
their hard work.
Many thanks to Ill. Sir Charles
Johnston Jr., P.P., the chairman of my
Inaugural Dinner. The evening was
absolutely amazing and everyone had
a great time. I was extremely honored
by the support I received from my
family, friends and the entire Boumi
Shrine community. Thank you
for attending. I hope you enjoyed
yourselves as much as the first lady
and I did.
I hope you all have a fun summer…
looking forward to a great turnout for
the Imperial Convention in Tampa,
Fla., where we, once again, will be
“standing tall for our children.”
Yours in faith,
Kurt L. Frevel Sr. Illustrious Potentate

BOUMI TEMPLE NEWS
From the Desk of the
RECORDER
T
his has been a very exciting year
so far—we have done some things
differently, we have done some new
things, and we have done some old
faithful things. The most important
thing is we are not done yet. We will
keep moving forward and, with your
help, we will continue to bring new
members into the Shrine.
Let’s look at the past few months. We
have held an Italian Dinner Night with
an “I Love Lucy” Show, the Inaugural
Ball, the Kids’ Easter Party, and the
Spring Oyster Roast. Boumi hosted
the Imperial Potentate and the Deputy
Imperial Potentate. They visited the
Naval Academy and Fort McHenry
and attended an Ambassadors
dinner meeting. Ill. Sir Ray Bosley’s
Testimonial was very well attended.
During all of this, we continued to
get new members into Boumi Shrine.
One of the biggest things that has
happened this year is the foundation of
a new Blue Lodge that meets at Boumi
Shrine. As far as we know, at this
time, no other Shrine has a blue lodge
meeting within its walls.
As you can see, we have had a very
busy first four months of the year and
there is no sign that it is letting up.
The Potentate has several trips lined
up for the year—an Alaskan Cruise,
a Caribbean Cruise, and a trip to
MASONIC MEMBERSHIP CARD
It tells me that I have entered into a spiritual
kinship with my fellow Masons: To practice
charity in word and deed. To forgive and forget
the faults of my brethren. To hush the tongues
of scandal and innuendo. To care for the
crippled, the hungry and the sick. To be fair
and just to all mankind.
Myrtle Beach. If that is not what you're
looking for, how about the Carnival or
the Sportsmen’s Bash?
Also, the units and clubs are holding
different events to support themselves,
Boumi Shrine, and the Shriners
Hospitals for Children. You can see it is
going to be a fun-filled, entertaining year.
All you need to do is keep looking for
new members and support the different
functions that you can afford to support.
Let’s look forward to the rest of the
year, and I will see you at an upcoming
event. May God Bless and keep each
and every one of you in the palm of his
hands until we meet again in the fall.

BOUMI TEMPLE NEWS
Colonel’s Staff
Catonsville S.C.
Colonel Donnie Saine
I want to start out by saying a big
thank you to everyone who attended
the Unit Heads Installation. I feel
honored to serve as your colonel for
this year, and your support is much
appreciated.
It has been great to see the turnout
for our business meetings Honor
Guard. I hope that the support will
continue. Remember, if your lady is
looking for something to do on the
night of the business meeting, check
with Lady Beth as there is most likely
something going on downstairs in the
Fellowship Hall.
Everyone had a good time at the St.
Patrick’s Day parade in Ocean City.
Thank you to the O.C. Shrine Club for
allowing those of us in town to attend
their meeting on Friday night.
The Potentate’s Inaugural was
elegant and we all had a great time.
Thanks for supporting this function.
The first Potentate Request Parade
was in May, and everyone who turned
out had a great time. I hope we can
continue to support parade efforts, as
this is a great way to get folks talking
about Shriners—what we do and how
they can help.
Our Family Picnic was a success
as was the recent cruise to Alaska.
The Imperial Session would not have
been as successful if it had not been
for the Magic Carpets, Arab Patrol,
Motor Corps, Color Guard, Divan,
Past Potentates, Big Rigs, and Camel
Wheels. The support you provided is
invaluable.
As you know, our goal for the units
this year is to get more feet on the
street. If you have a unit or group that
would like to be in a parade and need
help doing so, please let us know.
President George “Bo”
Barranger
Motor Corps
Captain Bob Candler
Greetings to everyone, this year is about
to reach the halfway point and things
are going well, so let’s keep that going.
Your captain will only have a good
year if ALL of our members support
him! Weather permitting, our riders
should already have been in the Glen
Burnie Parade last month. Coming up
next month, we’ll be very active doing
parades in Catonsville, Bel Air and,
most likely, Havre de Grace. We should
make a good showing in those.
In April, our Motor Corps was
in the Honor Guard at the Boumi
Business Meeting. We don’t know why
more of our members didn’t support
this, which is an embarrassment for
our captain. In the future, the Honor
Guard will be made up of nobles from
all different units and clubs since
there are so few members present
from each group. The meeting was
a good one—several new members
were voted on and the DeMolay put
on a short presentation. Speaking
of new members, we congratulate
Noble Raymond A. Luken, our newest
member in the Motor Corps.
Reading through the Boumi News,
you come to the “In Memoriam” page
and see those brothers who are no
longer with us. That is a letdown. As
years go by, it gets more and more
difficult to keep our membership from
shrinking. This is a serious problem, so
let’s get to work on it.
Spencer Wilson
We need to support the clubs and
units of Boumi Shrine. All the
clubs and units are looking for new
members, and Catonsville Shrine
Club needs new members, too. Most
of our meetings are held at Chief
Paolino Café. They sponsor Boumi in
the Catonsville Fourth of July Parade
every year.
Our June meeting will be the fourth
Thursday at Toby’s Dinner Theater in
Columbia. We will see “Hairspray.”
Toby’s always has a great performance.
Hope to see you there. We always have
a good time.
Remember to support your Blue
Lodge as well as Boumi.
John Friskey, Scribe
Harem
Director William E.
Lautenschlager
Well, spring has arrived and summer
is on its way. The Harem is holding its
meetings on the second Wednesday of
the month. Our meetings are held at
the Olde Philadelphia Inn located at
Philadelphia Road and King Avenue.
The meeting begins at noon. We enjoy
a nice lunch, after which we hold a
brief business meeting. Your spouses
are invited. Our next meeting is in
September.
Our membership has grown, but
we are still in need of new members.
If you are interested in joining,
please contact Director William
Lautenschlager at 443-469-9586 or
Ted Roux at 410-838-8363. We are
happy to welcome new members.
Hope everyone has an enjoyable,
safe and healthy summer. See you in
September.

BOUMI TEMPLE NEWS
Model Railroad Club
Bou-Tem-Sci
President Jim Frederick
President Sandra Phillips
Wow, spring is here and the Model Railroad Club will be
planning the new platform layouts for the 2016 display
that starts in November. At this time, we are proposing a
larger display for the O-scale (Lionel-size) trains, using
a T-shaped platform. We are also looking into having a
separate display for the HO-scale trains (smaller than the
Lionel size).
We are looking for a “few good members” to join us with
some good ideas to make the annual train display more
exciting for all. You can be a Shriner or Master Mason and
it is not necessary to have model trains; you can just enjoy
them.
If you have any train display scenery that may be taking
up space and you would be willing to donate it to the Model
Railroad Club, please contact Noble Ron Burdynski at 443882-5178 or [email protected].
We are dark during the months of June, July, and August.
Meetings will resume in September: the fourth Wednesday
of the month at 1 p.m. after the Wednesday luncheon.
With my year off to a good start, I am humbled to be elected
as Bou-Tem-Sci president for 2016–2017. It is quite an
honor to be in this position with this prestigious group of
wonderful women. I am looking forward to working with
my board in accomplishing the philanthropy that this club
is known for—aiding in the purchase of corrective shoes
for children, providing funds to the Shriners Hospitals for
Children in Philadelphia, and giving to the Boumi Shriners
Transportation Fund.
My officers are: Carol Schultz, secretary; Gerry Kalar,
treasurer; Florence Kestner, assistant secretary/treasurer
and corresponding secretary; Janet Kraft, recorder; and
Eileen Baird, member at large. We are still in need of a first
and second vice president. If you would like to step up and
be a part of such a worthy group, please contact one of the
officers. We need your help to continue our cause.
The May luncheon celebrating Mother’s Day was a
nice afternoon. We were entertained by “Mr. Charisma.”
The lunch was delicious and we all enjoyed one another’s
company for a fun time.
The annual June outing on the Potomac is sold out. A
wonderful day has been planned with all the sights and a
fabulous lunch aboard the Dandy Restaurant Cruise Ship.
Our hats off to Garneth Brown for planning this fabulous
trip. Everyone is anxious to attend this great event.
Bou-Tem-Sci’s fall kick-off luncheon meeting is Sept. 19.
We meet at Columbus Gardens for a nice afternoon. Please
plan to attend so we can catch up on all the news and events
that everyone has had over the summer months.
Our 84th Charity Benefit, “Standing Tall for Our Children,”
will be on Oct. 17 at Columbus Gardens. The cost is $33 with
all proceeds going to our philanthropy. For more information,
please contact Nancy Ritter at 410-747-9112. We hope to
see you at the benefit to enjoy a nice shopping experience, a
delicious lunch, a lovely fashion show, and friendship with one
another. Please support our annual benefit. Have a wonderful
summer and we hope to see you in the fall.

President Ray Lunn
The Aslaks dinner club needs some help. Why not stop
by the Scimeter Club Room bar before each Boumi
Business meeting and give us a hand? No experience
needed. We meet around 5 p.m. to set up the bar and
have a nice dinner at 6 p.m. We have hors d’oeuvres, sell
refreshments, and have a 50/50 raffle. Ladies are always
invited and we are finished in time to attend the Boumi
business meeting. Our dinners are only $15 each and
we have something different to eat each month. No
reservations are required. We just need you!

Shriners was a great success. Thanks to
MC Dick Feeser who did a great job as
usual. Our faithful bartender and dear

meeting. We all wish him good luck
and a speedy recovery. Thanks to all
who joined in at the last minute to help
tend the bar.
Our next meeting is on June 15
at the Federalsburg VFW. This will
be a dinner meeting with ladies and
guests. Our special entertainment for
the evening is a Wild West Show with
Annie Oakley and her famous gun

Please keep Commander Pete Phillips

An Installation for Zitta Temple #27 was in March. All officers
were in attendance and the Installing Officers put on a flawless
installation. We were honored with the presence of Dr. Hans
R. Wilhelmsen, the Sovereign Grand Inspector General
Emeritus; Past Potentates Ernest L. Carter and James Davis,
both Illustrious Emeritus Members of the Board of Governors
of the Shriners Hospitals for Children—Philadelphia; Noble
David Wagner and Boumi’s Illustrious Sir Kurt L. Frevel
Sr., both members of the Philadelphia Hospital Board of
Governors; Kenneth Wyvill Jr., Grand Master of Masons
in Maryland; and Raoul L. Frevel, Past Imperial Potentate.
After the installation, we were honored with a performance
by the Zitta Patrol Unit, under the direction of Gaynel M.
Buterbaugh, and accompanied by the Boumi Drum Corps.
The ladies are looking forward to another great year of fun
and fellowship. The Ways and Means Committee is planning
many new events, which are open to all family, friends, and
new/old members of Boumi Shrine. We are accepting gift card
donations in various denominations up to $1,000 for “our gift
card” raffle. Please contact PR Dorothy Needer at 410-561-5531.
Other events are being planned and will be advertised later.
If you are a Shriner Lady and would like information

events. We would love to meet you! Don’t miss out on the fun
and the chance to meet some fantastic Boumi Ladies!
Howdy Cuzzins,
Important Note: All Hillbilly meetings have been moved
to the third Tuesday of the month instead of the second
Tuesday. Starting time is still 7:30 p.m.
Our next meeting will be on July 19. The meetings for the
rest of 2016 are on Sept. 20 and Nov. 15. Our July meeting
will be in the Boumi Pavilion and hot dogs, burgers, and
more will be available. If you plan to attend, please contact
Vernon Young at 443-504-9030 or at [email protected].
We have three men and two gals signed on as new
members. To anyone else who is interested in joining this
fun group: it is only $30 and you’re paid up for life (i.e.,
there are no yearly dues). You won’t find a better deal
anywhere else.
Special thanks to Potentate Kurt Frevel and Frank Whay
for the use of an off roader for use in parades. We need
donations of Hillbilly stuff to decorate the vehicle.
So far this year, we have raised $228 from the collection
of cans. The total raised to date is $1,833, which amounts
to 3,000 pounds of trash turned to cash for the Shriners
Hospitals for Children—Philadelphia. Please continue to
put your empty cans in the Hillbilly cans throughout the

Highlanders
Captain John Cordani
In April, the Boumi Highlanders
held and helped celebrate the Queen’s
Ball. The Ball was a cooperative
venture of the Highlanders and the
St. Andrews Society. Those present
were participants in toasts to the
Queen and our grand fellowship with
Great Britain, our President, and our
wonderful country. Entertainment
included pipes and drums of our
combined societies as well as dancing
provided by “Straight Ahead.” Our
thanks to all who attended and our
wishes for all their good fortune.
The Highlanders will provide
lessons in playing Highland Pipes
for those who might have an interest.
Once we can get a group of some
three plus we shall arrange a time and
day for lessons and practice. Anyone
interested should contact me at 410582-8483 or [email protected].
It is not a problem if you never played
an instrument. If you have played, our
pipes are quite similar to the relatively
simple pipes used in early education.
The chanter, which controls the notes,
has a mere nine holes so is much simpler
than most modern wind instruments.
Although we use the Scottish pipes, be
aware that pipes are almost universal.
Pipe indications have been uncovered
in the tombs of Egypt and China and
throughout Europe, thus are almost
undoubtedly part of your heritage.
As captain, I have a trip proposed for
attendance at the 2017 Military Tattoo
in Edinburgh, Scotland. The package
includes 10 days in Scotland, the Grand
Dinner and seating at the Tattoo, meals
and hotels. If you are interested, please
note that in order to secure prime seats
at the Tattoo our agents must purchase
dinner and Tattoo tickets at the earliest
possible time. For that reason deposits
one and two must be made by Sept. 8.
On Sept. 9 our agent will purchase the
tickets for the Tattoo, which are not
refundable and will be assigned to you.
Tickets for prime seating at the Tattoo
are around $500 at the current exchange
rate. Only the Royals will have better
seating. The cost of the Great Britain
land portion will be between $3,521$3,922 depending on our numbers
(the more the less). Airfare will be
available at group rates much closer to
the event time, probably January 2017.
Please contact me for brochures and
information.

President Garneth Brown
It is finally here: spring and warm
weather! Let’s enjoy every moment of it.
We have had really good attendance at
our meetings. It is so nice seeing so many
beautiful faces. For those who may be
reading this article for the first time and
may be wondering who are the Boumi
Ladies, we are widows of Boumi Shriners
who meet the fourth Monday of the
month from September through June.
If you are a window or know someone
who might be interested in joining us, we
would love to have you. We meet in the
Scimeter Room at 10:30 a.m.
Ladies, thank you for sending
cards to all of our ladies who are not
feeling their best. I know how much
they mean to those who receive them.
Garneth would like to thank everyone
for paying their dues—every member
has paid. And the ladies would like
to congratulate Dot Fredrick who
celebrated her 95th birthday on May 27.

100 Million Dollar Club
Noble James G. Cullison
Chairman
E
ach month I look for reasons why you should join the
100 Million Dollar Club, but basically, our main reason
is the same—our hospitals and the children for which we
care. With the continuing advances in technology, new
discoveries and methods in medicine, and the competition
to attract the finest health care professionals, our hospitals
are in need of more money.
Every month we publish the names and organizations
of those who donated and joined this elite club. In this
issue I want to list, and publicly thank, those nobles,
individuals, and organizations that have answered my call
and donated to and joined the 100 Million Dollar Club so
far this quarter. They are: Scimeter Club, Mrs. Dorothy
E. Frederick, Lady Annemarie C. Pickett, the Darrell R.
Seltz’s Family, Annapolis Lodge No. 89, Noble Ronald J.
Burdynski & Lady Pearl, Noble Robert M. Bare, Noble
Raymond F. Cook, Noble Frederick C. Jessops Jr., Noble
Robert J. Lelonek, Noble James C. Martin, Noble Marlin
E. Mills, Noble John B. Neumeister, Noble Thomas S.
Parker Sr., Noble Raymond V. Peterson, Noble John E.
Slotke, Mrs. Mildred D. Spath, and Stephen & Sherye
Lynn (Spath) Sedlak. Won’t you join this elite group by
becoming a member of the 100 Million Dollar Club?
The two primary ways to contribute to this fund and
become a member include:
1. A bequest to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in
your will.
2. A cash donation to the fund during your lifetime.
This contribution can be made as often as you wish,
Have You Thought About This?
IT IS A GREAT IDEA . . . WHY NOT JOIN?

and the only criterion is that the contribution must
be in the amount of at least $100.
Why not return the enrollment form on this page with
your check for $100 to the Recorder’s office and become part
of this worthy cause today? Thank you.

PLEASE ENROLL ME AS A MEMBER OF THE
100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB
I have previously made a will leaving a bequest to the SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN.
I have added a provision in my will leaving a bequest to the Hospitals.
I prefer to make a cash contribution at this time of at least $100, which is tax deductible.

In Memoriam
“There was a friend whose heart was good. He walked with men and understood. His was
a voice that spoke to cheer, and felt like music on the ear. His was a smile men loved to see.
His was a hand that asked no fee for friendliness or kindness done. And now that he has
journeyed on, his is a fame that never ends—He leaves behind countless friends.”
