Through this sustainability Study we want to show how we, now and in the future, will interpret sustainable and concerned business management, because we are fully engaged in making the transition to a completely green enterprise, both on the outside as well as on the inside. The first step in this process is becoming aware. Whether in light of our guests, employees, owners or neighbors, Landal GreenParks takes its 'stakeholders' seriously. We have therefore included their opinions in various places in this Sustainability Study. In the coming years, stakeholders will become more intensely involved in the development and evaluation of our policy in regard to Sustainable and Concerned Business Management. And we would like to be able show that to you. We have aimed for an accessible and broad approach in this Sustainability Study. This means that we did not necessarily follow the study reporting guidelines or that we tried to be exhaustive. We particularly want to show what our green ambitions are. But also that sustainable business management takes time, needs investments in means as well as conviction and that everyone contributes what they can. But the main point is that we continuously look whether and where we can improve. To protect progress, we guarantee sustainable and concerned business management in our (long-range) policies and we define responsibilities. Thomas Heerkens General Director, Landal GreenParks 5 6 01 VISION AND POLICY Ambition for 2030: CO2 neutral TOP DOWN SUSTAINABILITY POLICY 4 parks Green Key in 2013 8 "THERE IS A HEALTHY TENSION CONCERNING SUSTAINABILITY" What does sustainability at Landal look like? Thomas Heerkens, Cor Homans, Tanja Roeleveld and Paul Bruinix answer this question through three statements. Michiel Schuurman of MVO Nederland is the discussion leader. Discussion participants Thomas Heerkens General Director, Landal GreenParks Is convinced that by being respectful of the environment, you show respect for everyone who recreates and lives in that environment. Paul Bruinix Director-owner Van Bennekom Vlees Has great compassion for the earth and has as his life's motto: dream it, wish it, do it. Michiel Schuurman MVO Nederland discussion leade Cor Homans Chairperson Landal Vitamaris Is an inveterate optimist who is sensitive to injustice, not only in words, but also in actions. Tanja Roeleveld Program manager, Sustainable & Concerned Business Management, Landal GreenParks Is proud to inspire individuals to make their own contribution to sustainability. r SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Vision and Sustainability is high on the agenda these days at many organizations. As it is at Landal. But sustainability while on vacation, is that really possible? Position 1: Going sustainably on vacation, is easy. T Tanja Roeleveld is the first to get the ball rolling: "If we are talking about consumption, then staying at home is more sustainable than going on vacation. But people need vacation. As a provider, you must take away the worries of your guests, also in the area of sustainability; everything must be done behind the screens. That way, guests can stay somewhere without feeling guilty." If you refer to a sustainable vacation, you are also referring to a vacation in your own country vs a vacation abroad. After all, the closer you stay to home, the less you burden the environment through transportation. "Is that really sustainable?", asks Cor Homans. "It is a part of it", replies Thomas Heerkens. "Then can that mean," Homans joins in, "that Landal will divest itself of its parks in Austria?" Heerkens reacts: "No, we don't decide for our guests where they go on vacation. Besides, we also have Austrian guests, and our parks in Austria are sufficiently sustainable. The energy comes primarily from geothermal sources and biomass. Michiel Schuurman continues: "So, if you want to go on vacation in Austria, it is still better to go to Landal." Meat supplier Paul Bruinix can connect with Heerkens position. "When you eat meat, you know that there is a lot more to it. We focus on the nice life that an animal has had, not on its death. It is probably no different for Landal. In the story about the park in Austria, guests will get an - in my opinion, appropriate - good feeling." Discussion leader Schuurman summarizes what has been said up to now by posing that there is always a healthy tension surrounding going on vacation in a sustainable way. "What is positive about a large company such as Landal," says Roeleveld, "is that we can close the cycle. We are a company full of opportunities, we have so many aspects within our own company. We directly influence these ourselves." Heerkens: "We start a movement through which guests can look at their own environment in a different way, and suppliers in a different way at their entrepreneurship. The impact Landal makes can be very significant when seen this way." Homans: "That is the attitude of an entrepreneur who really believes in it. That means you are doing the right thing." 9 10 Vision and SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability does not stop at the front door. To really be sustainable and workable, you must implement your principles and convictions to extremes. Position 2: You are not sustainable until you not only make demands of yourself, but also of your guests, suppliers and collaborating partners. A All the discussion participants agree with this position. Bruinix: "You have a choice as a meat supplier: do you select a cow that has been inside a stall attached to a grate for two or three years, or one that has had all the room it wanted outside in the fresh air for three or four years? That is still a short life, but a good one. I don't deal with farmers who only see their animals as production units. Roeleveld concurs "That provides winwin situations. If you select quality meat, you might get less quantity for the same amount of money, but it tastes much better. And healthier, because that quality meat was produced with much less antibiotic, which is also again good for the environment. In addition, there is also an attempt to opt for regional meat, which in turn means fewer miles for food transportation. When asked about sustainability in a park such as Landal Vitamaris, where most of the vacation apartments are owned by private citizens and where Homans is the chair of the board, he answers: "Actually, I am allergic to the 'sustainability' concept. That is a container concept, and just as meaningless as 'quality'. What is important is that you must think hard about your actions." Heerkens: "Sustainability, just like quality, does quickly become meaningless, and pushed in the direction of certification in order to make it tangible. But that has nothing to do with the mark of quality. On the contrary. It pertains to how you deal with the world around you. Do you pursue short-term profit, while inflicting damage to the earth in the long run? Or do you take that into account? For me, that is what defines sustainability. If you do not provide quality, your guests will not return. But for sustainability you also need awareness in your guests." SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Homans understands the point Heerkens makes: "I would also like to see the board and owners of the vacation apartments at Landal Vitamaris wholeheartedly opt for sustainability. We invested in solar energy and heat recirculation, but in doing so we encountered the necessary resistance. How do you overcome that?" Homans likes being consciously involved with the environment, but does also see it can be difficult at times. "I wanted to come to this round table discussion by train, but because I was too busy, I opted for using my car. So I do need to look at myself in the mirror at times." Heerkens: "That is the beauty of this subject, what matters is increasing awareness." Roeleveld adds: "That is exactly why we started with Green Key. A guideline to get started, for our parks and our employees." Vision and 11 12 Vision and SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Is it the large decisions that makes Landal green, or rather the small initiatives of the many employees in the parks? Position 3: Real sustainability begins from the bottom up. H Homans is of the opinion that management has to set the right example. Bruinix agrees with that. "If you define issues at the management level, you can speed up the processes. After all, there is always something that first has to happen, before individuals change how they think about it." Heerkens prefers combining a strategy formulated by management with a bottom up approach: "As a business you must have central targets, which could include: green electricity, waste recycling, Green Key and regional cooperation. Aside from this, I feel that our 100 points list created by our parks with small, practical, initiatives for saving electricity, a good example of the bottom up approach." Discussion leader Schuurman knows from other organizations that it can be particularly difficult at the middle management level. "They are given the order to produce in a more sustainable way, which takes money, but at the end of the year they are rewarded on the basis of their financial achievements. That rubs the wrong way." Roeleveld does not experience this at Landal: "Landal increasingly does not look at what an investment in sustainability costs at this moment, but especially at what it will deliver in the future." One of the aspects of sustainability focused on by Landal is cooperation with entrepreneurs in the region. For example, by selling regional products in the ParkShops and including them in the restaurant menus. Heerkens sees the cooperation with Van Bennekom as a good example: "We sit down together around the table to create a menu with regional dished. Van Bennekom searches the region for sustainable meat for this menu. Should that not be possible, we would strive to obtain meat from our own country, and only then would we divert the search to other countries." Bruinix: "And we know exactly what the links are in this chain, and are able to justify this choice." Schuurman feels that this is the essence of socially responsible management: "Know the links of the chain and dare to speak up based on facts." Bruinix confirms this and voices that you should not utilize regional products come what may, if they are also produced elsewhere in a sustainable way." Heerkens recognizes that as well and concludes: "As long as we continue to question whether it could still be done better." SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 “ Vision and Landal makes a case for nature, guest and society. We do so through sustainable and concerned business management. In 2013, four Landal parks started with Green Key, the international hallmark for sustainable businesses in the recreation and leisure branch. T Jeroen Mol The broad set of standards for the hallmark surpasses the regular statutes and legislation. Jeroen Mol, Operational Director at Landal, clarifies the interest: "The goal of the Green Key certification is the reduction of waste, creating awareness among the employees, making processes more sustainable and guaranteeing sustainable knowledge and processes. There are also guests who attach value to this green label. They can enjoy guilt free consumption. Obviously green The ball got rolling in 2012 when Landal Het Land van Bartje itself took the initiative for Green Key. As a result, a pilot was started with more parks. These parks were already fairly sustainable, and as a result, a number of the criteria for Green Key were met SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 “ Sustainability in the parks A Green Key certification means that sustainability is integrated throughout the organization. Reinder Oosting independent sustainability advisor and involved in the start of Green Key within the Landal GreenParks 17 18 SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability in the parks as a matter of fact. Mol: "Of course is everything not as easy. Things that may appear minor can evoke resistance. For example, employees are hesitant to use FSC [Forest Stewardship Council] paper. It is more expensive, and people would rather not use "gray" toilet paper. The purchase of LED lighting is also more expensive, but that is recovered in the long run by using less electricity and through lower maintenance expenses, because the light bulbs last longer. What matters is how we make certain investments: we must make conscious choices and in doing so, not look only at the initial purchase." Certification throughout Landal With an eye to the future, Landal has started certification throughout Landal. The ambition is to have all parks have a Green Key certificate by the end of 2016. "We have started outlining the impact and investments. Now we guarantee Green Key in our process such that all managers integrate the norms in their policies. We also include these standards in our internal audits. This way we are wellprepared when the external inspector for Green Key arrives. This does not mean that everything is suddenly abandoned. Green Key is not a goal in itself, but a means to get the process started and accelerated, and to increase the awareness among the employees." Reinder Oosting, independent sustainability advisor and involved in the start of Green Key within Landal. "Support towards a Green Key certification always starts with a benchmark, because measuring is knowledge: the advisors inventory the water and energy consumption and the waste production, to name a few, and use this to make organizations aware of the current position. We use the Green Key standards as a test. This results in an action list with suggestions for improvement that the participant can use to start the process of meeting all the Green Key standards. The policies must be implemented throughout the organization. For example, an incandescent lightbulb should no longer be installed between the energy-saving lighting. Usually the socalled benchmark for Green Key is an eye opener which inspires the participants. Green Key acts like an internal quality and sustainability system: you monitor and obtain data that can be used to target sustainability and usage costs. What I find striking about Landal is the education about the environment. It has been beautifully implemented, for example with a bare feet path or an insect hotel. That is an enhancement of the nature experience. The manner in which Landal offers regional activities and local products is good. Landal really connects with entrepreneurs in the area." What are the conditions for Green Key? The Green Key standards are geared to internal and external communication, sustainability in the management of the organization, use of energy, gas and water, waste management, transportation, food & beverage, green maintenance, sustainable measures implemented in the offices, paper usage, type of printing and sustainable purchasing, to name a few. For more information, see www.greenkey.nl. SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability in the parks TRANSPORTATION Sustainability and dealing with nature also means decreasing the CO2 emissions. This is why Landal continuously examines which sections of the company can be made (even more) green. For example in the transportation in the parks. Fewer trucks in the parks Electrical alternative Driving around the parks is done as green as possible. Taking this as a starting point, every vehicle written off since 2011 has been replaced by an electrical alternative. The Technical Service Department, to give an example, drives in quite a number of parks in a Goupil, which drives a maximum of eighteen kilometers an hour [11.3 mph]. The smaller service departments such as the delivery service utilize golf carts. Housekeeping drives primarily electrical as well. Aside from the far better carbon footprint, electrical cars have a very low sound level. Through the Logistics project, Landal has diverted heavy traffic to and near the parks. With lower CO2 emissions as well as logistical costs as a result. The project started in 2013, in which various parks placed their orders for deliveries for various suppliers through a central website. Van Uden Logistics then arranged the delivery. As a result, a truck only has to enter the park once every two weeks. This resulted in 2013 in a savings of 1,570 truck visits, a decrease of 75%. 75% less freight traffic to the parks Green guests Remarkable initiatives are also taken by the various parks. Guests at Landal Beach Park Texel, for example, were able to explore the island at no cost for a half a day using an electrical vehicle. The automobiles had been made available by TexelEnergie, a company working in close cooperation with the park. 19 20 SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 NATURE IN THE PARKS A stay in the middle of greenery is a matter-of-course at Landal. But much is also undertaken in and around the parks to highlight the many facets of nature even more. Wildlife parks and a butterfly garden Fourteen parks have their own wildlife park where they organize things as treasure hunts and activities. The wildlife parks are created of natural and recycled materials. And very special: four years ago, a butterfly garden was created at Landal Coldenhove. Visitors can spot butterflies in this fairly accessible garden as well as learn more about the flowers attracting these butterflies. Insect hotel A large number of parks have an insect hotel. Children as well as parents can learn all about ladybugs, flies, bees, wasps and ants to name a few. This also benefits the biodiversity in the park. SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability in the parks Playing in the parks For the younger guests, every park has a centrally located inside and outside playground which has been laid out sustainably and economically circular. Where possible, the playgrounds have been made accessible for children with a handicap. Nature breakfast By now, six parks have the nature breakfast, organized in cooperation with the Institute for Nature education and Sustainability (IVN). During the excursion, participants learn more about the importance of (involvement with) nature as well as being presented with a nutritious breakfast in the vicinity of the park. Herb gardens A number of parks have created their own herb gardens. The home-grown herbs are used in the restaurant and catering facilities in the preparation of freshly prepared meals. Walking and looking for wildlife with the forest ranger In many parks, guests can go out looking for wildlife or taking a walk in nature in the accompaniment of a forest ranger. The forest ranger points out special plants and trees to the participants, or wild animals and their tracks. There are fun nature treasure hunts for young guests. A number of parks also have the Nature guide available. 21 22 Sustainability in the parks SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 WELL-CONSIDERED EATING AND DRINKING When thinking about Food & Beverages, it is logical for Landal to choose organic products and/or regional products. What does this mean for the restaurants and ParkShops? Green deep frying Since June of 2013, the Dutch and German parks use the Green label frying oil from Oliehoorn. This oil has been sustainably produced, is GreenPalm certified, is 100% organic and tastes delicious. About 60% of the used oil is converted to bio-ethanol, a mixed fuel for bio-kerosine, for customers such as KLM. Prefer no glutens? Since October of 2013, sixteen of the Landal parks have gluten-free dishes on the menu. The restaurants offer a satisfying glutenfree variation for a number of à la carte dishes, as a part of a healthy and varied selection. Livar pig Many parks have the Livar pig on the menu. Livar pigs are kept in a socially justified and animal friendly way, and processed according to the traditional methods into delicious products. 16 parks have gluten-free dishes on the menu SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability in the parks Fair Trade coffee Fish: as sustainable as possible The menus of Landal only contain nonthreatened fish species, and the fish is purchased sustainably as often as possible. The bungalows and restaurants serve Puro coffee, with the Max Havelaar quality mark. This quality mark guarantees fair trade conditions which improve the employment and living conditions in third world countries. Coffee grinds as nutritious soil In 2013 Landal took the initiative to recycle coffee grinds. The sediments are brought to a company which transforms it into a nutritious soil for oyster mushrooms. Landal purchases part of the yield of oyster mushrooms back for the restaurants. Aside from this, part is processed by other companies into delicious bites (also found on the Landal menu) and a part is returned as a Mushroom Farm Kit for guests. These kits are for sale in the park. Organic assortment in the ParkShops Guests can visit the Landal parks for diverse organic (regional) products. In the ParkShops, the assortment varies from organic dairy products, bakery products and sandwich fixings to meat, fish and vegetables. Aside from this there are delicious snacks, fruit drinks and organic wines. 23 24 Sustainability in the parks SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 USAGE IN 2013 at Landal Landgoed ’t Loo Total guest nights in 2013 371,581 Total quantity drinking water 53.457 m3 about 14,121,845.40 gallons] Gas usage 790.919 m3 Total electricity costs € 164,481.00 Distributio n of waste Refuse Paper/Cardboard Glass Total waste amount in kilograms 577,705.00 [1,273,621.51 lbs.] GFT Swill SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability in the parks BUNGALOWS Sustainability is opted for whenever possible in the construction, interior and care of new bungalows This applies to the renovation of existing bungalows as well. What does this mean in real terms? Logical investment In the Landal Beach Park Texel, all 144 villas are equipped with solar panels. With a very high number of sun hours per year, this is a 'logical' investment. Another very practical investment is the purchase of sustainable LED lights. All the lights have been replaced by LED and energy efficient lighting in the parks with a Green Key certification. Maximum temperature ICY room thermostats have been placed in the Landal bungalows. These thermostats automatically decrease the temperature when it becomes dark and there is no longer any movement. The maximum temperature is 24 C. o Biodegradable Water conservation The parks with a Green Key certification and many of the bungalows of Landal that have been renovated have a flow rate limit on the faucets that allows a maximum flow of six liters [1.6 gallon] of water per minute. The toilets use the same quantity for each flush. In Hof van Saksen all the toilets in the accommodations and even the public toilets are all extra water conserving. And in Landal Stroombroek, the waste water from the pool functions as the toilet flushing water in the main building. The service sets in the bungalows are biodegradable. The pouch, made of corn starch, as well as the contents. The dishwasher tablets and the dishwashing soap from Claro have a European Eco label. In addition, Wecovi, the service sets supplier, works together with sheltered workshops. 25 26 26 Sustainability in the parks SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 03 INVOLVED EMPLOYEES 2,500 employees ‘COUNT ON ME’ as organizational culture SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability in the parks 42 training programs at Landal Academy 86% satisfied employees VITALITY AS STRATEGIC PRIORITY 744 interns 2013 27 28 Sustainability in the parks SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT IS ALSO: INVESTING IN EMPLOYEES "It is the enthusiasm and commitment At Landal concern for the guests is the dominating factor. A significant condition to have the guests feel content is the effort of enthusiastic employees. This is why Landal does whatever it takes to have employees feel content as well. No better job than vacation! H of the employees which makes Landal unique", states HR Director Anita Brink: "To us, sustainable business management also means investing in our employees. By giving them attention and offering opportunities. "In 2013 we created a new HR strategy which outlines how we can provide even more room for employees for self-development. As a guideline for this future-proof and sustainable strategy we have five topics: leadership, talent development, smarter organizing, vitality and employee marketing." Enthusiasm of employees Anita Brink “The employee satisfaction survey of 2013 shows that no less than 86% of our employees rate Landal as a great place to SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 work. For us, this is a confirmation that we are on the right road with our Landal values: being trustworthy, enthusiastic, cooperation and personal. We have even included the enthusiasm of our employees - the 'Count on me' culture - in our mission statement. Work-life balance "The work-life balance (the balance between work and private life) has come to the foreground as an attention point from the employee satisfaction survey. In 2013 we put pen to paper to ensure that employees do not let their enthusiasm pass them up. These plans for the sustainable availability of employees were rolled out in earnest in 2014." 5 Sustainability themes: • Leadership • Talent development • Smarter organizing • Vitality • Employee Marketing What is ‘Count-on-me’? 'Count-on-me' stands for the enthusiasm of each employee to exceed the expectations of guests, colleagues, home owners and suppliers. This means that Landal employees: • are always at the ready, involved and act vigorously; • have respect for individuals and nature, and are of service; • exceed expectations by being welcoming and always just make that extra effort. 29 Enthusiastic employees Working with a smile Landal has performed an employee satisfaction survey every year since 2013. Prior to 2013, it was every other year. The survey is performed by Great Place to Work, an organization that also studies the employee satisfaction at Wyndham, the parent corporation of Landal. The employee satisfaction is researched and evaluated on the basis of five aspects: 'credibility, respect, honesty, pride and collegiality'. 'Credibility', 'respect', and 'honesty' says something about the degree of trust in the employer. 'Pride' measures how employees view their own jobs and 'collegiality' pertains to cooperation with colleagues. Open and informal Employees appreciate the degree of independence within their work. They experience Landal as a safe and pleasant work environment in which they can be who they really are. Where there is room to make mistakes, and where they can share ideas. Everyone is equal within Landal. There is no discrimination and the business culture is experienced as open and informal. Points for improvement are the clarification of the future vision by management, the balance between work and private life and clarity about the chances for promotion. Teams have been formed in every park and office to address the points needing attention as per the employee satisfaction survey. Employee satisfaction survey scores for 2013 83% proud employees This is a great place to work Collegiality Pride Honesty Respect Credibility 86% 84% 83% 76% 71% 75% 30 Vitality SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 VITALITY AS STRATEGIC PRIORITY Landal feels that it is important for employees to be healthy and feel good. For this reason, Landal created the Be Well vitality plan. Landal also invests in creating more sustainable commuter traffic from home to work and employment conditions. Be Well Goals The energetic employee The Landal vitality plan was inspired by the ‘Be Well’ programs at Wyndham. The philosophy behind Be Well is that a healthy employee is happier, and everyone profits from that happiness: the employee self, the guests and of course the organization as well. Landal wants to contribute to the wellbeing and development of employees through the Be Well plan. A energetic employee is focused on his or her work, is able to make a difference for a guest and is sick less often. Landal also attaches value to balance in teams through a varied line-up of ages. Mentoring plays a significant role in this: older employees coach the new generations in skills that they can still develop. Be Well ensures that: • employees are energetic and perform better; • employees feel appreciated and are longer employed by Landal; • employees feel supported in areas such as work-life balance, stress and obesity; • a culture comes to life in which difficult topics can be discussed; • outsiders see Landal as a vital organization; • Landal is known among (future) employees as an organization that feels strongly about vitality. Be Well in real terms 15,000 fewer kilometers driven Be Well is not just about stopping smoking or eating more fruit, but also about personal awareness of lifestyle and behavior. Striking examples ae the Low Car Diet, the Bicycle plan, sustainable lease plan, NS [Dutch National Railroad] Business cards, collective health insurance and the personnel reservations. SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Vitality Vital employment conditions Low Car Diet Sixty Landal employees, among which General Director Thomas Heerkens, followed a Low Car Diet in 2013, and left their cars in the garage for ten days. This was one of the initiatives as part of the Day of Sustainability. The participation in the Low Car Diet provided various mobility arrangements to stimulate use of the bicycle, public transportation and driving on electricity. ONE TON CO2 savings Through the use of employment conditions that are specifically focussed on vitality, Landal wants to structurally contribute to the wellbeing of the employees. A number of examples: • Economical purchase of a bicycle through the Bicycle plan. • Expenses for public transportation are reimbursed in full. • Discount when staying in one of the parks through the personnel reservation policy. Collective health insurance Landal employees can make use of an attractive collective health insurance. Landal GreenParks Germany received a distinction in 2013 from a healthcare insurance company for the health management at the work site. Going to work in a sustainable way also good for the environment. Riding a bicycle is healthy Employees of Landal can purchase a bicycle with the accompanying accessories and insurance against a good price through the Bicycle Plan. Landal hast strict rules for the utilization of leased automobiles. Environmental labels and CO2 emissions are taken into account. As an example, the use of hybrid automobiles is stimulated by having charging points at the offices. In 2013, the Landal car park had seven plug-in hybrid automobiles. Landal also offers a NS Business Card to employees with a leased automobile. Since the introduction of this card, in the middle of 2013, a total of 15,000 fewer kilometers have been driven: a CO2saving of at least one ton. 31 32 Employee Facts & Figures LANDAL EMPLOYEES Total Netherlands & Germany 2,500 SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 66 employees already work over 25 years at Landal employees 0-2 years 2-5 years 5-10 years 10-15 years 15-20 years 20-25 years >25 years Male Female Flextime Full time 4.5% average sickness absentee rate in the Netherlands (4.25 in Germany) 40% of the employees are temporary employees Temporary employee Student Part time SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Talent development TALENT DEVELOPMENT IS CENTRAL Not only does Landal have the ambition to grow in size, but also in the excellence of services provided. This is why Landal has been investing in the development of its talent for years. The Landal Academy, the learning institute, the focus on leadership and Talent@Landal function as the cornerstones. Landal Academy Landal Academy: a new way of learning Landal Academy is the internal training institute for Landal. It offers employees the opportunity to develop themselves further in their field. A new method for learning was selected in 2013, the 70-20-10 model. This model assumes that 70% of the benefit of learning is achieved through learning at work, 20% through talking with colleagues and a mentor and 10% during classical training days. The 70-20-10 model provides structure during the training period. The study material is offered digitally more often, so employees can refresh their knowledge quick and easy and on their own. The greatest benefit comes in the practical learning: on the floor with challenging assignments and professional guidance by the employee's own supervisor. This is how Landal Academy guarantees a continuously learning organization. 42 training sessions in 2013 10 new training programs New training programs include: • Managing at Landal • Guest group training • Board member Workshops • Transactional analysis • Introduction webinars • Negotiating for professionals Talent@Landal Landal works hard on the 'best in class' culture, in which employees are challenged and stimulated to display, utilize and further develop their talents. In addition to the Landal Academy, Talent@Landal was started in 2013, a training model which will be further rolled out starting in 2014. Through Talent@Landal, Landal encourages employees to discover their talents and make choices. Where on the one hand employees want to 'climb quickly' at the beginning of their career and work full-time, those ideas can change when they start a family or get older. Through Talent@Landal, talented employees create new opportunities for themselves within the company. 33 34 Talent development SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 FROM INTERN TO MANAGER Intern Tom Clarijs (22) is following the Manager Recreation Company training, and is currently already taking his fourth internship at Landal. He has definitely decided to start a career at Landal after his studies. His goal: to become General Manager. “I “I have worked as a management intern at Landal Sonnenberg in Germany, and are now working at the HR department in the office in Leidschendam. You are well-supervised as an intern, and the way Landal is concerned with vacations really speaks to me. It is impressive to see how the ultimate guest experience is the dominating factor in everything. And the company encourages individuals to develop their talent. I have extensively discussed my future with the Learning & Development Manager. It would be ideal to start as a Shift leader in the Front Office and then continue on to become the Front Office Manager. Those are good steps towards becoming the General Manager. Whether that happens depends to a large degree on myself of course. I have all the confidence in that. But I do want to keep all options open, and especially develop along broad lines. There is still a lot to learn!" Remko Vogelaar (24) started at age 15 at Landal Hoog Vaals as a vacation employee. In 2008 he interned at that same park, and since March 1, 2013 he is the Manager of Fun & Entertainment at Landal Port Greve. "The path outlined by Tom is indeed the most logical path towards becoming General Manager. As Manager for Fun & Entertainment I have chosen a somewhat different path. I am fairly young, and know that I still have a lot to learn. Landal facilitates me in doing so. For example, I have recently taken the course 'Managing at Landal'. Very educational. My recommendation to Tom is therefore: do especially what you really like, and starting there look for new challenges You are given every chance here to develop yourself." SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Talent development 35 Jerry Meijer (43) started in 2003 as chef at Landal Heideheuvel, where he was involved in the development of new concepts such as Woods, among other things. He recently became the General Manager at Landal Coldenhove. “After my first year at Landal Heideheuvel I was asked to assume the function of F&B Manager as well. Again another year later, the function of Retail Manager opened up, and of course I did take that new challenge with both hands. So at a certain point in time I combined three functions! In 2011 I was given the opportunity to start as 744 General Manager at Landal Heideheuvel. A great function, in which I feel myself like a fish in water. I am enormously grateful to Landal that they gave me the space to develop myself. Personally I feel it is a major advantage that I really worked between the employees on the work floor. I would recommend that to Tom as well. HBO 80 internships Focus on leadership 144 9 71 520 MBO 664 Nederland International Leadership is essential in the Landal approach. When good leadership is demonstrated, employees are able to put up a better performance. And an employee who is aware of his duties, demonstrates initiative and assumes responsibility, shows that he or she commands personal leadership. Accordingly, Landal makes an extra investment in leadership over the coming years. Through, among other things, the training 'Managing at Landal' that is specifically geared towards shift leaders and assistants. In addition, through the Landal Academy, so-called ‘champions’, employees with specific knowledge, are engaged to share information with colleagues. Landal as a Learning Institute Landal enjoys sharing the enthusiasm for the profession with tomorrows employees. Each year, hundreds of students gain experience in the vacation profession. In 2013, a total of 744 MBO and HBO students did internships at Landal. After the completion of their study, many interns return as temporary employee or fulltime employee. Definition of personal leadership • Employee makes a greater effort himself and encourages others to do the same by giving individuals trust and connect with them, keeping his environment and relations in mind. • Employee demonstrates professionalism, is flexible and able to set joint goal and attain results. • Employee shows ambition, is socially concerned and inspires others. • Employee is honest and straightforward. 36 36 Sustainability in the parks SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 04 THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS WASTE 580 tons CO2-reduction 13,000 pieces of furniture were given new life SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability in the parks 37 93% less paper = 200 trees saved LAY DOWN WALKING PATHS OF OLD BRICKS PLACE UNDERGROUND WASTE CONTAINERS 38 BE SMART IN DEALING WITH WASTE Landal is continuously searching for ways to tax the environment as little as possible. Even just by separating the waste in the parks, Landal posted an environmental benefit in 2013 of 580 ton of CO2 reduction. Van Gansewinkel is an important partner in this search. This company collects the waste that is produced in a number of parks and offices of Landal in the Netherlands. “E “Guests encounter recycling centers everywhere”, states Michiel de Beer, Senior Key Account manager at Van Gansewinkel. "Guests can separate paper, glass and refuse, after which it is collected in underground containers, together with the other refuse from the park. Behind the screens we also collect clippings from trimming, tin foil, cooked food remnants and construction and demolition waste, in addition to the guest deposits." Recycle wherever possible There is no waste, is the philosophy of Van Gansewinkels. Recycling by separating waste, that is what it comes down to in reality. "Old paper and glass, for example, SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 are used as base material for the paper and glass industry", states De Beer. "Clean wood is turned into chipboard, and cooked food remnants from the kitchens of the restaurants undergo fermentation. During the fermentation, biogas is released which creates a sustainable source of energy. The digestate that remains becomes a valuable fertilizer. Remnant waste is the waste that cannot be recycled. This is turned into sustainable energy, steam and heat through burning. The so-called cinder that remains, is used after decontamination as construction material for road construction and hydraulic engineering. Vegetable, fruit and yard waste Organic waste is currently not being collected separately in the bungalows. This had been done for a certain period, but notwithstanding intensive communication it resulted in a non-recyclable flow. Landal has also investigated the possibilities for placing bio fermentation installations in the parks, but as of now the volume is too small. Organic waste that is left behind in the remnant, is now converted into energy. However, Landal continues to search a fitting solution. There is no such separate as well. Attention is paid also to the separation of hard plastics by guests. Information Guests bring their own waste from their bungalows to the recycling center in the park. The majority of the glass and paper is well-separated. Together with Van Gansewinkel, Landal is looking for ways to separate out the plastic in the bungalows as well. The biggest challenge is to continuously inform guests about what they are to do with their waste, and to facilitate them well in the separation of the waste. De Beer: "Landal is paying attention to this in a good way, and we are actively involved.” Focus on plastic The possibilities for separating and collecting waste continue to develop. At Landal, the current focus is plastic waste. The restaurants and stores collect all plastic, especially plastic film. The cleaning staff keeps the plastic film in which towels and bed linens are wrapped for a better environment Landal does not only care for the environment through the recycling of waste. Sustainable equipment, reduced paper usage and donating left-over food to the Food Bank are part of the business philosophy as well. 39 40 There is no such SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 From preprinted matter to printing No longer printing single side, but double sided, was the easiest step to save on paper and counter waste. Also by printing as little as possible, and giving environmentally friendly printing advice in the digital signature are now also a standard. In addition, Landal started in 2011 with the transition from preprinted material to printing, because with preprinted material there is always a remaining inventory. Reused bricks In Landal Miggelenberg bungalows have been demolished. The bricks from that demolition have been chipped clean and are now leading a second life: they form a pleasing new walking path in the park. Sustainable playground equipment In the middle of 2013 Landal entered into new contracts with two playground equipment suppliers: Kompan and Eibe. At both companies sustainable business management is seen as a strategic priority. They use fair trade wood for their playground equipment. Parts of old equipment are of course recycled. SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 There is no such “ Landal's vision of sustainability is practical and is implemented in every layer of the organization.. I find this very inspiring. They also invest much energy in getting that one single thing remaining in order: a way to easily separate waste in the bungalows. Michiel de Beer Senior Key Manager Van Gansewinkel 41 42 There is no such SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Away with the inventory The Vacation Magazine that is sent to guests at home prior to arriving, is no longer being printed in advance in a large print run since 2013. The Vacation Magazine is printed twice a week. This way the magazine is always up-to-date, and there is no, or hardly any, waste of paper. Everything deserves a second chance About 13,000 pieces of furniture were replaced in 2013. Most of these were still suitable for re-use, and have been donated to good causes and institutions. Much has gone to East-European hospitals and children's homes. Small local sport and other associations have also received furniture. Van Gansewinkel retrieves the old down comforters and pillows to be recycled. Electrical equipment is collected by Wecycle, a foundation that organizes the collection and recycling of rejected electrical equipment and broken energysaving lights in the Netherlands. This way, scarce natural resources are reused as much as possible. SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 There is no such From print to digital In 2012 Landal started an initiative to digitalize the guest documents: 600,000 reservation confirmations, modifications, memos and cancellations per year. By 2013, Landal only sent 7% of all this by mail; saving 93% of paper. Sustainable equipment In the parks, written-off equipment is being replaced by a sustainable alternative. For example, in 2013 the deep fryers have been replaced by an energy-efficient variation. In the main buildings, the central heating boiler has been replaced by a high efficiency boiler. Food Bank The individual parks of Landal are encouraged to work together with the local Food bank. This prevents waste of food of which the 'use by' date has expired, but that is still good to eat. 43 44 44 Sustainability in the parks SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 05 SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS ENTREPRENEURSHIP COOPERATION WITH LUNG FOUNDATION 142 modified accommodations in 26 parks SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Sustainability in the parks 2 Vision villas Since 2004 a partner with Nature Reserves Wild Outside Days in 5 parks OFFER COMBINATION WITH COMFORT CARE 45 46 TOTAL NATURE EXPERIENCE Landal desires to offer all guests fantastic stay. The experience of the resources of nature is central in that experience. The parks of Landal are primarily situated in or next to the most beautiful nature areas. Nature experience and nature conservation go hand in hand. Through the close cooperation with partners such as the Nature Reserves and the Bird Protection Society. H T The partnership of Landal and The Nature Reserves prove that recreation and nature can easily be enjoyed together and that they can enhance each other. Among the ways that Landal supports the Nature Reserves is through the recruitment of members and donors by making the organization and its activities and efforts visible to the Landal's public. Landal also offers members of the Nature Reserves discounts on a stay, in order to allow them to enjoy nature even more. The Nature Reserves in return bring the nature in and around the Landal parks to the attention of the guests of the parks, and ensures that the members of the Nature Reserves are able to find the parks. And whoever wants to be totally immersed in the nature surrounding the parks, can make a nature walk or spot wildlife together with a Nature Reserves forest ranger. SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Social business management Herman Veerbeek Forest Ranger with the Nature Reserves management unit South-west Veluwe “ It is no coincidence that various parks of Landal GreenParks are in the close vicinity of areas of Nature Reserves areas. Nature Reserves are known for keeping the population management as close to natural as possible of, for example, wild boars and red and fallow deer. The animals are well visible, and guests have optimal enjoyment of the protected environment. 47 48 Socially conscious Inextricably connected Marc van den Tweel, General Director of the Nature Reserves, about the cooperation: "Since 2004, Landal has been the only official partner of the Nature Reserves. Landal and nature are inextricably connected to each other. Together we actively involve the guests of Landal with nature in and around the parks. For example, through our popular children's program OERRR, and events such the Wild Outside Days. We also offer guests the opportunity to take educational hikes and make nature observations together with a forest ranger. The nature and vacation experience go hand in hand this way." Getting dirty is allowed In 2013, the Nature Reserves started to organize the Wild Outside Days in nature areas situated throughout the Netherlands. During the Wild Outside Days, families with children are guided through nature and they can participate in various outside activities inspired by a seasonal theme. The idea is to introduce children to the wonders of nature while playing. In 2013, Wild Outside Days were organized in 5 parks. The Nature Reserves and the Fun & Entertainment departments of Landal worked closely together to organize the Wild Outside Days. This cooperation SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 is very successful, and more Landal parks will organize Wild Outside Days in 2014. OERR-campaign OERRR is an initiative from the Nature Reserves to have children discover nature. Based on challenging do and discover maps, based on the four seasons, activities such as play, crafts and knowledge assignments are carried out in nature. Anyone who registers at no cost through www.oerrr.nl, receives a new set every season. Staying in one of the parks is of course an excellent time to discover nature through the use of these maps. These maps can thus also be obtained at many of the Landal parks. Guests find an information flyer about OERRR in their welcome folders. An eye for birds Landal also supports the work of the Vogelbescherming Nederland [Dutch partner of BirdLife International]. The two organizations work together to allow guests to enjoy nature and, in particular, the birds. Vogelbescherming Nederland is dedicated to the protection of birds and their habitats. Giving information and education, such as in the Landal parks, is very important in this work. Birds in the parks themselves are helped by the great variety of birdhouses. 49 SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 BUCKLING DOWN FOR RIGHT TO PLAY Right To Play sees to it that over a million children over the whole world can play and do sports in countries where this is taken for granted. Landal helps since 2012 to attain this goal again every year. During the summer of 2013 the employees in parks and offices have again devoted themselves to Right To Play. O Under the motto ‘Playing together = Stronger together!’, Landal employees, together with a group of top athletes, devoted themselves in the summer of 2013 to collect as much money as possible for Right To Play. They organized sports activities and sport clinics for guests as well as residents from the vicinity. Right to Play ambassadors Raemon Sluiter (tennis), Jaap Viergever (mountain bike), Deborah Gravensteijn (judo), Henk Pieterse (basketball), Roderick Weusthof and Floris Evers (hockey) and Roel Timmermans (golf ) gave the sport clinics. Right to play The very tall ex-basketball player Henk Pieterse has already been an ambassador for Right To Play since 2006. "Being excluded and not being allowed to join the game is difficult, and I know that", says Henk. "But not being able to play because of immense hardship and dangers in the environment in which you live, that must be a hell. Thank goodness Right To Play does something about that. This is why I am so proud to be a part of this organization. Every child has the right to play!" Annual campaign Aside from all the activities in the area of sports, various locations also had other activities, from a summer fair and flea market to a clothing and book fair. For 2014, Landal has the ambition to grow the effort for Right To Play into a structural partnership and to have the annual campaign be run at all Landal facilities. 50 Socially conscious VACATION FOR EVERYONE Going on vacation worry free, is not a given for everyone. Landal has customized accommodations and facilities for guests who need special facilities, a bit more support or a helping hand . SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Z At least 15% of Dutch citizens has a limitation, and that number will only increase. One of the most important causes of this is the rise in the aging population: the number of individuals over 65 years of age will double in the coming years from over 2 million to four and a half million individuals. Small, but sometimes also major, limitations occur relatively often in this age group. Since Landal wants to offer everyone the possibility to go on vacation, a number of 51 SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Without barriers Landal has 142 modified accommodations for the less-abled, distributed across 26 parks. The degree of modification varies significantly from one bungalow to the next. For this reason, Landal performed a study in 2013 in which accessibility was the main theme. Based on the outcomes of that study, Landal set a goal to bring all less-abled bungalows to the same service level as of 2014. By the end of this year all guests, regardless of the degree of their handicap, will be able to celebrate a vacation in one of the bungalows of Landal. 15% of Dutch citizens have a limitation the parks have modified accommodations for guests: • with a walking or movement limitation (accessibility) • who are blind or have poor eyesight (Vision villa) • who are deaf or hard of hearing (accommodation for those who are hard of hearing) • with airway problems (COPDaccommodations) National Children's Foundation A partnership in which children are the center. The National Children's Foundation has dedicated itself for over 50 years to children who need a helping hand. These are children who have already experienced much in their short lives. There is often no money in the (foster) families or institutions where they live for ‘fun things’ such as vacation or sports. Landal provides the possibility for the National Children's Foundation to make it possible for this group of vulnerable children to go on vacation. Comfort Care Landal collaborates with Comfortzorg for guests who need extra support and care. Comfortzorg is one of the most experienced organization in the area of quality care at vacation addresses. Through Comfortzorg, guests in all Dutch parks can count on care and resources. 52 Socially conscious SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Vision villa Landal offers the Visionvilla in Landal Landgoed 't Loo and Landal Hoog Vaals especially for guests with a visual limitation. This six person bungalow is completely geared towards guests who have limited vision or no vision at all. For example, the lighting has been modified everywhere, there are voice controlled appliances, information is available in large print and braille and aside from the modified play box there are various books on tape Bungalows suitable for individuals with asthma/COPD In close cooperation with the Longfonds [Lung Foundation Netherlands] Landal has modified bungalows and apartments in a large number of parks that are geared in particular to persons with asthma or COPD. This means that the bungalows have smooth walls, smooth or hard floor covering, no open fireplace or gas fireplace, synthetic lines, no smoking or pets and primarily blinds. Previously known as The Asthma Foundation Modified bungalow for the hearing impaired The first vacation home for the hearing impaired can be founds since 2013 at Landal Rabbit Hill. Landal worked in close cooperation with the Dutch Association of the Hearing Impaired in the development of this bungalow. The bungalow is equipped with a number of smart modifications. There is, for example, a deaf loop system for the transmission of radio, DVD and TV sound. The smoke alarm is linked to an alarm and warning system. And, the front desk at the park is equipped with a deaf loop system as well. Accordingly, Landal enters into cooperative agreements in the region to provide the guest with a unique experience of the surroundings. A fruitful cooperation, for the region as well as Landal as well as the guest. SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 E Each park exudes the atmosphere of the region: this is what Landal strives for. To assist the parks in solidifying the ties to the region, the Regional Anchoring Project was called to life in 2013. In this way, Landal wants to exchange good examples from parks that are strongly oriented to the region. A number of parks, such as Landal Port Greve in Brouwershaven, have already been working closely with the local retailers in the eating and drinking, culture and side trips and activities outside. Regional Win-win situation The cooperation with local retailers and institutions is good for the region as a whole. "The region is given attention in our park, and we, in turn, play an active and stimulating role in sustainable and social developments in the region. This way we think along about the tourism management to be practised and we act as sponsor for local events. A win-win situation." Rich experience The region to the guest Rob Pouw is General Manager of Landal Port Greve, one of the supporters of the project. "At Landal Port Greve we already have a rich experience in the area of regional cooperation. By integrating unique and authentic regional elements in our park, we strengthen our own identity." • Allow the region to return to the park • ‘Sense of place’ for the guests Support The project offers the Landal parks support for the way in which regional activities and area products can be integrated in the park. Pouw: "Based on best practices, we stimulate and inspire other Landal parks to make the region central. Each region is different, of course, and there must be room for creativity and entrepreneurship. But in terms of quality, everything must be the best and in line with the Landal values. This is why we develop guidelines for regional cooperation with local retailers and initiatives." IN THE PARK Cooperating with local retailers is a way for Landal to distinguish itself. But how do you do this? How do you make the region visible in the park? Landal Port Greve and Landal Duc de Brabant give an interpretation of the concept 'the region in the park', each in their own way. Landal Duc de Brabant, Diessen-Baarschot "What is good, does not always have to come from far away" When the Landal parks work together with retailers at the regional level, it is important that the products meet the highest quality requirements. For example, Landal Duc de Brabant has been working for a number of years with Kempen Goed, a cooperative of providers of high-grade products of the Brabant region. The pork on the Landal Duc de Brabant menus comes from freerange pigs at the traditional farm De Elshorst in Baarschot. "We still farm like it was done in the years past", says Thea Moonen from De Elshorst. "Our pigs walk in the pastures every day, and that is unique for Brabant. Because the pigs can rummage about outside, they have much physical movement. This is how real rummage meat is created, and you can definitely taste it! It is honest meat of a very high quality and guaranteed antibiotic-free. Through working together with other traditional Brabant retailers we have a larger network and we are better able to develop our 'breed'. The collaboration with Landal Duc de Brabant is more extensive than only the pork that we supply to the restaurant and catering facilities. We also sell sausages, bacon and dried sausage from our farm. We also organize activities together with Landal Duc de Brabant such as tours of the farm, and covered wagon excursions." Thea Moonen SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 Regional Landal Port Greve, Brouwershaven "You should not have the feeling in Zeeland that you are at the Veluwe" As the General Manager of Landal Port Greve, Rob Pouw wants that his guests really take something home from that beautiful countryside in Zeeland. "You should not have the feeling at SchouwenDuiveland that you are at the Veluwe", says Pouw. "By cooperating with local retailers we want to make the atmosphere of the region as tangible as possible in the park. You see that reflected at the registration desk, but also in the design of our bungalows. Our menus include mussels from Neeltje Jans obtained from the Oosterschelde. We also offer many products in our ParkShop that we purchase from local retailers and farmers, such as the wine of the Kleine Schorre and Tons mustard from Zierikzee. We also encourage guests to discover the region by pointing out various activities in the surrounding region such as the Brouwsedag which we sponsor, or a visit to the vineyards. In addition, guests are given a Schouwen-Duivenland Pass for free public transportation as well as special offers at local retailers." 59 60 60 Sustainability in the parks SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 LANDAL AS A GOOD FRIEND TO THE REGION Landal distinguishes itself by utilizing everything that makes a region special. This is how Hof van Saksen benefits from the beautiful area of the Hondsrug in Drente. Guests are made aware of all that is beautiful and all the 'particular' things that the region has to offer. Working together creates a situation from which all involved parties can benefit. Roland Rozenbroek H Hof van Saksen is luxurious vacation resort, located in the beautiful surroundings of the Drente town of Nooitgedacht. Local economic interests “Hof van Saksen is very important for the region”, says Eric van Oosterhout, mayor of the municipality Aa and Hunze where Nooitgedacht is located. "It is good for the local economy. Many retailers profit from the presence of the resort, such as the goat herder and the country store which are within a stone's throw of the park. They sell their products in the park, and for many of the guests it is a fun excursion. And although there are some excellent restaurants in the park, Roldes restaurant and catering facilities also benefit nicely. And as an employer, Hof van Saksen is a major asset to the region." Select the region Rozenbroek: "In the hospitality branch, Hof van Saksen is one of the largest employers in Drente. As far as suppliers is concerned, we also try to work together as much as possible with the local parties. For example, at Hof van Saksen we have 600 farms with thatched roofs, which require much maintenance. We have SUSTAINABILITY STUDY 2013 consciously chosen to select a regional thatcher who uses Drente reeds, although at a higher cost. Regional anchoring plays a major role in that selection, and our choice is to strengthen the region. Landal is really ahead in their field as far as the area of sustainability. Aside from this, we continuously strive for improvement and optimization." Integration "Hof van Saksen impacts the character of the region as a whole", according to mayor Van Oosterhout. "Before Landal came on the scene, the resort was closed for a period in 2012. We immediately noticed that as a region. We are extremely glad that Landal has taken over the facility. A pleasant side effect is that since the arrival of Landal, the cooperation between the municipality and Hof van Saksen has become much more intense. Hof van Saksen really positions itself as a part of the region and the municipality. For example, they actively think in all areas about the tourism policy. They make a difference on a smaller scale by participating in all kinds of sponsor initiatives. That is greatly appreciated by the municipality in the region."
