Blues Will Swing at Final ’08 Concert Published by America’s Finest City Dixieland Jazz Society • San Diego, CA • www.dixielandjazzfestival.org $2.00 Per Issue November - December, 2008 Vol. XXVI No. 6 Festival #29 is Finally Here! Enjoy Our Fantastic Lineup The San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival is finally here! From Nov. 26-30 the 29th Annual Festival will take place at the Town & Country Resort & Hotel in San Diego’s Hotel Circle. 2008 marks the last appearance by the Buck Creek JB at any festival. Buck Creek is a fantastic traditional group who has routinely played to standing ovations since 1977. For the Thanksgiving Festival they will be joined by the wonderful pianist Ray Templin, who is a particular favorite of our Festival patrons. Though we will bid goodbye to Buck Creek, we will welcome new bands in 2008: Tim Laughlin’s New Orleans All Stars, with Connie Jones; John Gill’s New Orleans-style Delta Stompers, the Statesmen of Jazz/Clarinet Summit (Bob Wilber, Antti Sarpila, Pieter Meijers, Rossano Sportiello, Howard Alden, Nicki Parrott, Ed Metz, Jr.); and, from San Diego, Sue Palmer and her Motel Swing Orchestra, Dixie Express and The Jazz Ensemble. John Gill will sing a tribute to Bing Crosby with the Sentimental Serenaders. Other bands returning from previous appearances at the Festival are Grand Dominion JB, Uptown Lowdown, Fulton Street JB, Blue Street JB, Titanic JB, the Hayriders (Rockabilly), Cornet Chop Suey, Heliotrope Ragtime Orch., Night Blooming Jazzmen, High Society JB, Natural Gas JB, Coyote Hills JB and the Mission Bay High Dixie Band. Ace vibraphonist John Cocuzzi will guest with several bands, as will young San Diego reed virtuoso Chloe Feoranzo. Eva Evingerová, from the Czech Republic, will be the featured vocalist with High Society JB and multi-instrumentalist Katie Cavera will lead small combos in the Ray Templin will perform with Buck Creek JB at its swan song. Golden Foyer and perform with a variety of bands. In addition to our Pianorama sets on Friday and Saturday, the Festival will feature world-class pianists Mimi Blais, Carl Sonny Leyland, Virginia Tichenor, Ray Skjelbred and Chris Dawson. Dick Williams will be in charge of the JazzSea Jams at the Festival. Musically-inclined patrons are welcome to join in on the organized jam sessions during the weekend. He will also lead Dick Williams and Friends, including some of the musicians who are regulars with the JazzSea Jams. The Festival begins Wednesday, Nov. 26 with two terrific bands from San Diego: the High Society JB with Eva Emingerová and Dixie Express. Thursday, at the Town & Country’s lavish Thanksgiving Buffet, diners may enjoy live music played by Carl Sonny Leyland. Thursday night, six bands perform in the Golden Ballroom and Town & Country Room, then all the groups will play on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, the Festival day begins with Gospel music by the Night continued on page 3 Sue Palmer Motel Swing Orch. Nov. 16 The queen of Boogie Woogie piano, San Diego’s own Sue Palmer, will lead the Motel Swing Orchestra at the final AFCDJS monthly concert-dance of 2008. Sue and Motel Swing will play from 1-4pm at the Mississippi Ballroom of the Lafayette Hotel & Suites, 2223 El Cajon Blvd. The band is one of the most popular in San Diego, appearing numerous times at Croce’s, Dizzy’s, Tio Leo’s, the Adams Ave. Street Fair, Gator By the Bay, La Jolla Concerts by the Sea and many park concerts. Sue and her group also drew rave reviews at the Sacramento Jubilee and the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee. Sue and Motel Swing will debut at the San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Festival Nov. 26-30, where Sue will also play with the Hayriders rockabilly band. Earlier this year, her “Sophisticated Ladies” disc won the International Blues Competition award in Memphis, for the best self-produced CD. PAGE 7 PAGE 8 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2008 JAZZ RAMBLER PASSINGS John David Green, M.D.A. (1940-2008) David Green was born in Independence, MO, on Sept. 3, 1940, and passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 3, 2008. He was a professor emeritus of music at Southeast Missouri State University where he taught for 34 years. He conducted the university’s orchestra, wind ensemble and jazz bands and taught music history before retiring and moving to San Diego. After coming to San Diego, he soon found his way into the local music scene regularly playing clarinet, saxophone, and/or bass with the Crown Island Jazz Band, Elktones Big Band, the Sheriff’s Band and Wesley Palms Jazz Band. David has performed at the Thanksgiving Dixieland Festival for several years and volunteered annually to teach OASIS classes on traditional jazz for AFCDJS. David is survived by his wife Janed Guymon Casady whom he married last May, a son and daughter-in law, two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, two grandchildren, and two stepgrandchildren. Donations in memory of Dr. Green may be sent to The Community Council for Music in the Schools, (CCMS), a non-profit organization which supports music education in the San Diego City Schools and loans musical instruments to needy students. Donations should be mailed to P.O. Box 22471, San Diego, CA 92192. ~~~~~ Richard M. Sudhalter (1938-2008) Cornestist and author Richard Merrill Sudhalter was born Dec. 28, 1938 in Boston. His father Al was a jazz saxophonist and an admirer of Bix Beiderbecke’s music. The younger Sudhalter took up cornet as a pre-teen after hearing Beiderbecke recordings from his father’s collection. Mr. Sudhalter received degrees in English JAZZ RAMBLER NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2008 Literature and Music from Oberlin College. He worked as a reporter for UPI from 1964-72 and as a music critic for the New York Post during the ’70s and ’80s. In the early ’70s, Mr. Sudhalter collaborated with Phil Evans to produce a monumental research work, Bix, Man and Legend, which was published in 1974. While researching the book at Williams College, Mr. Sudhalter discovered the original arrangements from the library of Paul Whiteman — from the era when Bix Beiderbecke performed with the Whiteman Orchestra. While a resident of London, Mr. Sudhalter organized the New Paul Whiteman Orchestra, using British musicians who played the Whiteman arrangements. Later, he played with the Classic Jazz Quartet (with Joe Muranyi, Dick Wellstood and Marty Grosz) and won a Grammy for his liner notes on Bunny Berigan (Time Life Records; Giants of Jazz). In 1999, another epic book on jazz, Lost Chords was published. His final book, Stardust Melody (published in 2002) was a biography of Hoagy Carmichael. Mr. Sudhalter suffered a stroke in 2003 and his health continued to decline as he was afflicted with Multiple System Atrophy. After a bout with pneumonia, he passed away in New York City on Sept. 19, 2008. Continued from back page Between 1939 and 1941, Allen recorded again with Jelly Roll Morton and with Lionel Hampton, Ida Cox, Sidney Bechet, James P. Johnson, Zutty Singleton and many others. He left the Russell/Armstrong organization in 1940 and began leading his own small group. which included his old friend J.C. Higginbotham on trombone and Edmond Hall on clarinet. The band played an up-to-date swing style (eventually tending towards a “jump” sound) and Allen’s own playing continued to move forward. Though the personnel changed several time, the band played successful engagements in Boston , Chicago and San Francisco as well as New York. In New York City during the 1950s, Allen led bands at the Stuyvesant Casino, the Central Plaza, Lou Terassi’s and finally settled in for a long run at the Metropole. He appeared with Vic Dickenson, Coleman Hawkins, Pee Wee Russell, Jo Jones and others on the TV special “The Sound of Jazz” in 1957 and toured Europe with Kid Ory’s Creole Jazz Band in 1959. He also recorded two sessions with Ory for Verve. It might seem that Allen’s modernistic approach would have clashed with Ory’s ultratraditional sound. However, the juxtaposition of styles produced a wonderful contrast that is a joy to hear on both the studio recordings and the live performances. In the 1960s, Allen reduced the size of his own band to a quartet — just trumpet and vocals with rhythm. They played extensively at the London House in Chicago, the Theatrical Grill in Cleveland and the Metropole and Blue Spruce Inn in New York. He also toured England as a soloist in 1964, 1966 and 1967. Allen was seriously ill with pancreatic cancer during the last tour and he passed away on Apr. 17, 1967. From the mid-’50s on, recordings by Allen’s nephew Alvin Alcorn and others show that Allen’s influence was widespread. Henry Red Allen Jr. is still one of the most admired and influential trumpeters in the history of jazz. His unlimited creativity, daring innovation and spirited approach to the trumpet will continue to inspire generations of hornmen as long as jazz is played. CA DIXIELAND JAZZ SOCIETY Post Office Box 880387 San Diego, California 92168-0387 They Called it Jazz Henry Red Allen – Formidable Jazz Innovator (This is the 70th in a series of biographies of great traditional jazz musicians. Continued from the Sept.Oct. Jazz Rambler). By Hal Smith President, AFCDJS The Luis Russell Orchestra was a musical home to Red Allen for nearly four years. Between 1929 and 1931 Russell’s ensemble made a number of outstanding records. Sides such as “Panama” and “Ease On Down” show why the orchestra was considered to be the hottest in New York. Allen’s contributions — daredevil phrasing and a seemingly endless capacity to improvise and inspire — are reason enough to own the entire collection of these recordings. During his stay with Russell, Allen also recorded with Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, King Oliver and Don Redman, plus several sessions with his own group, billed as “Henry Allen Jr. and his New York Orchestra.” This combination, comprised of Luis Russell sidemen, recorded several classics like “Swing Out” and “Patrol Wagon Blues.” But a series of records dating from 1932 are often cited as some of Allen’s best recorded work. The band that made these dates was called the Rhythmakers and it was strictly a recording group. Though the personnel changed from session to session, Allen played dazzlingly brilliant trumpet on every side. He sounds particularly inspired when paired with the gritty clarinet and tenor sax of Pee Wee Russell. Allen and Russell were lifelong friends and that fact is clearly evident from their interaction on the Rhythmakers records. Each exhibits an uncanny sense of telepathy for what the other is about to play and they are both quick to react to a particularly attractive phrase. Allen’s PAGE 12 biographer, John Chilton, describes the trumpeter’s playing from this period as “amazingly original legato phrases that were improvised in a way that crossed and re-crossed the bar lines, without losing the original pulse…clusters of notes that seemed to hover over the meter, but …resolved with emphatic, contrasting on-the-beat figures…he flew without a compass yet never got lost.” Allen left Russell in 1933 to join Fletcher Henderson’s Orchestra. There he was featured alongside the titan of the tenor saxophone, Coleman Hawkins. Records such as “Queer Notions” confirm Hawkins’ status as the preeminent saxophonist of the era, while Allen explores the ultramodern melodic and harmonic structures without a trace of reluctance. In 1933, Allen and Hawkins recorded with an orchestra led by Horace Henderson (Fletcher’s younger brother, a superb pianist and arranger). These recordings swing even more than the sides with the elder Henderson. Allen’s trumpet and vocals NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2008 and Hawkins’ sax are heard to good advantage on every side. They also organized a session that utilized some of the top musicians in New York and the results were issued as the “AllenHawkins Orchestra.” When Hawkins left the Henderson Orchestra, he was replaced first by a virtual unknown, Lester Young, and finally by a saxophonist with a similar style to Hawkins’, Ben Webster. Allen himself moved on in 1934 to join the Mills Blue Rhythm Band. Though the MBRB recordings are not on a musical level with the Russell or Henderson orchestras, they still contain thrilling examples of Allen’s trumpet playing. By 1934, the Victor recordings by pianist/vocalist Fats Waller were selling in unbelievable quantities. Competing labels engaged Wingy Manone, Putney Dandridge, Bob Howard and Red Allen, among others, to record similar material in loose jam session formats. Between 1934 and 1937, Allen, accompanied by some of the best hot musicians in New York, recorded masterpieces such as “I’ll Never Say Never Again Again,” “Body and Soul” and “On Treasure Island.” Each side featured his supremely inventive trumpet playing and his uniquely-phrased singing. The sessions continued even after Allen rejoined Luis Russell’s Orchestra, which had become the backup for Louis Armstrong. The freedom of the smallband recording sessions must have been stimulating after playing the same bigband arrangements night after night with Russell. Also, though Allen had plenty of chances to blow during the concerts, he was not allocated any solo space on Armstrong’s records. No wonder Allen sounds so inspired on the recordings by his own band! continued on page 11 JAZZ RAMBLER
