2013 Media Guide - Manhattanville College
A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2012-13 school year, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With women’s golf beginning play as a varsity sport last year, the program now sponsors 20 competitive intercollegiate teams – including eight teams that have been established or re-established in the last six years alone. And the teams at Manhattanville have proved themselves more than able to hold their own in an increasingly competitive athletic landscape. Fourteen of the school’s 20 intercollegiate programs earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, while both men’s hockey and women’s hockey teams received national rankings over the course of the year. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2012-13 as well. Field hockey junior Amanda DeChent was named the program’s first-ever NFHCA All-American, giving Manhattanville at least one All-America selection in 13 of the last 14 years, while senior high jumper Bill Motherway was crowned the school’s first champion at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Manhattanville also boasted two Freedom Conference Players of the Year to go with 45 combined All-Conference honorees. In addition, nearly 40 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas in recent years, including former baseball standout Dan Fiorito ’12, who signed a deal with the New York Yankees in August 2012. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a wellrounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.15 cumulative Athletic Department GPA for both the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters and the fact that 14 Valiant teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition, softball senior Jessica Van Galen was named the school’s third CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in the last three years, and she was also one of two CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees and one of 95 Academic All-Conference honorees for Manhattanville this year. Community service also continues to play a vital role in the studentathlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds of community service hours each year. As a result of their efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2009, making Manhattanville one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive two awards, as well as earning the Community Partner Award from the Westchester Medical Center in 2013. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfill the college’s mission of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in a global community. Media Guide Credits 2013 Manhattanville field hockey Media Guide 1 Athletic Administration Director of Athletics Keith Levinthal Eleventh Year • Hobart ’95 Keith Levinthal returns for his 11th full year as Director of Athletics at Manhattanville College in 2013-14 and continues to establish the school as a regional and national leader in athletic success, academic achievement and community involvement. Levinthal has been a part of Manhattanville in some capacity for 15 years, having previously served 12 seasons as head coach of the school’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program from 1999 until 2011. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 56 conference championships – 29 regular-season championships and 27 tournament titles – in the last decade. In that span, the program has also produced 32 conference Players of the Year, 18 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of first-place finishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings. Manhattanville had another successful season with Levinthal at the helm in 2012-13. While no team was able to break through with an NCAA Tournament berth, 14 of 20 teams saw postseason play. On the field, the department boasted its first field hockey All-American in program history in junior Amanda DeChent, to go with two Freedom Conference Players of the Year (DeChent and Jessica Van Galen) and 45 All-Conference honorees. Off the field, Van Galen gave Manhattanville its third straight year with a CoSIDA Academic All-American thanks to her spot on the second team, while she was also one of a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District selections and one of the school’s 95 student-athletes recognized by their respective conferences for academic success. In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season titles and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team also advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in their final season with the Skyline Conference in 2006-07, as a program-record six teams won conference championships and a record five teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its first-ever berth in the national semifinals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the first Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the first time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team. Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his first year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level academically, socially and athletically. In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant studentathletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the field, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. Assistant Director of Athletics Julene Fisher Ninth Year • Marymount ’02 Julene Fisher enters her ninth year as Assistant Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator, and her 11th year overall within the Manhattanville Athletic Department, in 2013-14. As Assistant Athletic Director and SWA, Fisher is responsible for assisting the Director of Athletics in an administrative capacity, helping to run the school’s 20-sport Athletic Department. She also handles the scheduling for all of Manhattanville’s sports and handles travel accommodations and assignment of the department’s student workers. A former Assistant Sports Information Director at Manhattanville, Fisher also has assisted the Sports Information Department by serving as official scorer for baseball games. Fisher began her tenure at Manhattanville as an administrative assistant in the Manhattanville development office before moving over to the Athletic Department. Fisher graduated from Marymount College in 2002 as an English/Journalism major. She served as the editor-in-chief of Marymount’s student newspaper, The Cormont, and also was a four-year letterwinner in both swimming and softball at the school. In television, she worked in conjunction with ABC News, the Discovery Channel and HBO to produce the hit series, “The Justice Files”, as well as HBO’s Emmy award winning documentary “In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11”. 2 2013 Manhattanville field hockey Media Guide Manhattanville Coaching Staff Head Coach Kevin Kelly Sixth Season • Saint Michael’s ’73 Kevin Kelly returns for his sixth season at the helm of the Manhattanville field hockey program in 2013, continuing the task of returning the Valiants to their position as a conference and regional power. In 2012, Kelly led the team to an overall record of 11-8, including a six-game winning streak between late-September and mid-October that saw the team outscore its opponents 29-16. During the stretch Manhattanville won three straight overtime victories, all on game-winners by junior Amanda DeChent. The junior finished with the best individual season in program history, recording new school and Freedom Conference single-season records with 30 goals and 73 points in addition to a school-record seven game-winning tallies. After the conclusion of the season, DeChent was named the team’s first-ever NFHCA first-team All-American, after also being named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year. DeChent also joined teammates Melissa Goncalves and Kayla Meenan on the All-Freedom Conference teams. In his fourth season with the Valiants, Kelly delivered Manhattanville to a Freedom Conference Tournament appearance for the first time, as the Valiants made the conference semifinals as the fourth seed. The team came out of the gates hot, tying the program record for best nine-game start to a season with an 8-1 mark that saw the Valiants outscore their opponents by a 34-14 margin. After the season, four Valiants were named to the All-Freedom Conference second team, the most All-Conference honorees since the program’s first year in the conference in 2003. DeChent had a great first season with the team, ranking second in program history with 36 points as the first player in Valiant history to average more than two points per game. In 2010, Kelly nearly guided the Valiants to a winning record despite fielding a roster with just four upperclassmen and only one senior, posting a 9-10 overall mark. The most exciting game of the year came later at DeSales, when the Valiants tied the score late and Megan Greene tallied the game-winner with only five seconds left in overtime. Although no Valiants were named All-Conference, Kayla Meenan had one of the best statistical seasons in program history in 2010, as she ranked second on the school’s single-season points list with 33 (11 goals, 11 assists). Manhattanville posted a 7-11 record in Kelly’s second season as head coach in 2009, providing a solid base for future successes. The team’s potential was evident in the season-opening 6-3 win over Keystone College in which five of the team’s six tallies came from freshmen. A trio of Valiants – Jen Ascencio, Maura Bruen and Lauren Rutledge – earned All-Conference honors from the Freedom Conference after the 2009 season, as all three players were named to the second team. In his first season as a collegiate head coach, Kelly guided the Valiants to a 6-12 record. The team faced a very difficult schedule that featured five nationally ranked opponents, falling to three of those teams by a single goal. In all, 10 of the Valiants’ 18 matches in 2008 were decided by one goal, including five of the team’s six wins. Kelly came to Manhattanville from Rye High School, where he served as the head coach of the varsity field hockey team for 30 years. He experienced unparalleled success at the school, posting a career record of 391-56-9 (.867), and built a resume that includes four New York State championships, five regional titles and nearly Kelly’s Career 20 league championships. Year 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 Career Record 6-12 7-11 9-10 11-8 11-8 33-41 Conference 2-6 1-6 2-5 4-3 3-4 9-20 Postseason Freedom Semifinals Individually, Kelly was a three-time Section 1 Coach of the Year and in his final season was named the 2007 Journal News Coach of the Year. Kelly, whose Rye program was named the “Team of the Decade” by New York State, finished his high school career with the second-highest win total among active New York coaches. Kelly currently resides in Westport, Conn. The team placed fifth in the Freedom Conference a year ago, coming one game short of a postseason berth, but things are expected to be different this year as the squad was picked to finish fourth in the conference preseason poll with 28 points, just ahead of fifth-place Wilkes (25 points). Defending champion Eastern took top honors in the poll with 47 points and five first-place votes, followed by FDU-Florham (42 points) and King’s (Pa.) (39 points). The Valiants will feature both returning and experienced players as well as an incoming group of freshmen that are ready to play under Coach Kelly, as 14 players are back with the program this year while eight newcomers look to make immediate impacts as well. Headlining the returners coming back for the 2013 season is senior Amanda DeChent. DeChent was not only the Freedom Conference Player of the Year in 2012 but also an NFHCA first-team All-America selection and an NFHCA All-South Atlantic Region first-team pick after finishing the season with 30 goals and 13 assists for 73 points. These stats were good enough for both Manhattanville and Freedom Conference single-season records for goals and points. FORWARDS While DeChent already ranks first on the school’s career goals and points marks with 43 and 109, respectively, she has some options to work with on the front line, as classmate Kirsten Savage and sophomores Rylee McGuire and Sharon Konfederak also return up front. McGuire tied for third on the team by tallying seven goals in 19 appearances a year ago, while Konfederak scored three goals in the first three games before going down with a knee injury to 2013 Season Preview end her season; however, she has made a full recovery and is expected to help with production up front again. Savage appeared in all 19 games in her first season with the Valiants a year ago, scoring three times. The Valiants also will have some newcomers looking to play right away this year, as freshmen Mikayla Allen, Amanda Cirocco and Gina Moricone join the squad for the first time in 2013. MIDFIELDERS The midfield lost three veteran players from last year, and as a result Kelly will need his returners and his newcomers to step right into starting roles. The lone starter coming back from last year is sophomore Morgan Parsons, who will anchor the midfield unit after starting 17 of her 19 appearances a year ago. She will be joined by sophomore Breanna O’Neill, who saw action in 15 contests from last season and could be a difference maker this year, as well as junior Saba Naji, who is back on the Valiants roster in the midfield position after playing in eight games as a freshman. In addition, freshman Samantha Bara will help out in the midfield in her first season and will have the chance to jump right into a starting role as well. DEFENSE The defensive end has the deepest group of returners back in the lineup for the new season, with three of the team’s starters back for 2013. Sophomore Renee LaFosse started all 19 matches as a freshman and led the squad with a conference-best 13 defensive saves, while senior Julia Esposito and junior Carly Brunco also started every game last season and will keep the defense a strong component for Manhattanville this year. Adding to the veteran presence in the back, senior Meg Wittner, junior Kateri Fischer and sophomore Toni Moricone are all back for another year with the Valiants this season and will look to break into the starting lineup, while freshman Bregje Smits also looks to make an immediate impact. GOALKEEPERS The goalie position has four candidates for playing time this season, but the three newcomers will have to take the reins from twoyear starter Amy Hilton. The senior started 16 games last season and capped a 9-7 record by holding opponents to 3.28 goals per game with a .729 save percentage. While she may have the edge in the competition for the starting job, Kelly has three other options headed into the year, as freshmen Ally Cybak, Meghan Hughes and Arianna Kreush all will challenge for playing time. Senior Goalkeeper Amy Hilton Senior Forward Amanda DeChent returns to Vassar in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to defend their Betty Richey Tournament title that they have won for two straight years. The Valiants return for their home opener against Mercy College on September 11 at 3:00 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field. This match will be followed by two home games against Rivier (Sept. 15) and Eastern Connecticut State (Sept. 18). The third and final in-season tournament has Manhattanville matched up against host team William Smith and St. Lawrence at the William Smith Classic on September 21 and 22 in Geneva, N.Y. A few more non-conference games will be scattered throughout the remainder of the conference schedule including games against Hartwick (Sept. 25), College of New Jersey (Oct. 1), and Western Connecticut State (Oct. 16). The regular season will end October 29 with a conference game against FDU-Florham before the Freedom Conference Tournament semifinal round on November 6. The champion will be crowned on November 9 with the winner gaining the league’s automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. SCHEDULE The season gets kicked off at the Southern Maine Invitation on August 30 when the Valiants take on the host team Southern Maine at 12:00 p.m. The next day they take on Johnson & Wales at 10 a.m. The next weekend Manhattanville 2013 Manhattanville field hockey Media Guide 7 Returning Players - Seniors #22 AMANDA DECHENT F • 5’7” • Senior • Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley (Southern Connecticut) 2012: An NFHCA first-team All-America selection and an NFHCA All-South Atlantic Region first-team pick … also named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year, an All-Conference first-team selection and Manhattanville’s Female Athlete of the Year … finished the 2012 season with 30 goals and 13 assists for 73 points, both new Manhattanville and Freedom Conference single-season records for goals and points … finished the regular season tied for second in Division III in points, third in goals and goals per game, fourth in points per game, and 16th in assists … after only two seasons, already ranks first on the school’s career goals and points marks with 43 and 109, respectively … finished the year with seven gamewinning goals, setting a new single-season record … started and played in all 19 games for the Valiants during her junior season … picked up her first two goals on 13 shots against Stevens (9/1) … had five-point games in back-to-back performances against Smith (9/7) and Vassar (9/8) … had six points on three goals against Eastern Connecticut (9/19) … scored all four Valiant goals, including the overtime game-winner, in a 4-3 victory over Wilkes (10/6) to set a new school single-season goals mark … picked up seven more points on a goal and a school-record five assists against Rivier (10/7), breaking the single-season points record … scored three more goals against Freedom Conference opponent Eastern (10/17) to become the first Valiant to 100 career points … picked up five more points against FDU-Florham (10/23) … scored her 30th goal of the season in the season finale against nationally ranked TCNJ (10/26). 2011: Named to the All-Freedom Conference second team in her first season with Manhattanville … appeared in 16 games starting in 15 … scored the game-winning in her first game with the Valiants against Mercy (9/1) … scored a pair of goals against Bay Path (9/9) … took a season-high 12 shots against Delaware Valley (9/24) … had a season-high three goals and six points against Western New England (9/28) … also had six points with two goals and two assists against Stevenson (10/9) … led the team in goals with 13 as well as points with 36 … also had five game-winning goals to lead the Valiants. 2010 (at SCSU): Played in 19 games at Division II Southern Connecticut State University, starting three for the Owls … tied for third on the team with six goals and added two assists for 14 points … scored a pair, including the game-winning tally, against Merrimack (9/25) on the way to Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week honors … named to the NFHCA Academic Team. Surrounded by a four-pillar lighting system, scoreboard, fully equipped press box and bleacher-style seating, GoValiants.com Field is made up of state-of-the-art Field Turf, a technology that emulates the stability and resilience of natural grass without the obvious maintenance. The field’s durability and elaborate drainage system allow the Valiants to play in all kinds of weather and also allow all 20 Manhattanville athletic teams to make use of the turf for training, practice and games. The field itself measures 120 x 72 yards and the four light poles – each 90-feet high – let the Valiants play under the lights several times each year, something few other Division III programs can do with regularity. The press box at GoValiants.com Field is wired for Internet and phone access, allowing for live video broadcasts of Valiant athletic contests through GoValiants.TV and audio broadcasts via WMVL 88.1 FM, as well as live stats produced for every Valiant home game. There are also ample electrical outlets and a photography bay above the press box for use by media and team personnel. A high-powered sound system used for pre- and in-game announcements is also housed in the press box. Adjacent to the GoValiants.com Field is another valuable outdoor athletic venue, Manhattanville’s outdoor grass field. The regulation-size grass field was rebuilt in 2005 and has the ability to host several soccer matches during the year. While not equipped with lights, the grass field does possess its own scoreboard and PA capabilities, which can be accessed through the press box at GoValiants.com Field. With both turf and natural grass options, the Valiants hold a unique advantage over every other team in the conference in that they can choose a field surface to suit the type of game the team wants to play on that day. Manhattanville’s first win at GoValiants.com Field came courtesy of the women’s Kennedy Gymnasium GoValiants.com Field soccer team, which defeated the SUNY Institute of Technology, 2-0, in the opening game of the Valiant Cup on September 3, 2005. The field hockey team posted a 6-4 record in its first season on the new turf in 2005 and won three of its first four home matches, including a 3-1 victory over New England College in its first home contest on September 8, 2005. Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the home of the Manhattanville men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs, while also serving as the dayto-day operational home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics. Kennedy’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, has balcony and ground-level seating and standing room for nearly 1,000 spectators and the intimate atmosphere gives Manhattanville teams a loud and imposing home-court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The Kennedy Gym court itself was completely torn up and resurfaced in June 2013 thanks to a sizeable donation from the “Sunday Run” basketball group. The school partnered with J & J Gym Floors for the new floor, which eliminates the multitude of dead spots that plagued the 55-year old floor while also creating crisp, new graphics and a vibrant new paint job on the court itself. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy facility also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round. The offices of all Manhattanville coaches and athletic administrators are also located within the Kennedy walls, making the facility the primary meeting spot for all of Manhattanville’s varsity sports teams throughout the school year. Kennedy Gym Facilities In addition to the basketball and volleyball arena, the Kennedy Gym building also houses the Valiants’ strength & conditioning and sports medicine departments, a swimming pool, multiple locker rooms and office facilities. The entire facility received a major overhaul during the 2012-13 school year, completely renovating almost every square inch of the venerable building. The bottom floor was completely renovated in 2012-13, including new and improved locker room facilities for Valiant and visiting teams. All Manhattanville locker rooms now feature new wall-to-wall carpeting, individualized wooden locker stalls with personalized nameplates, customized team white boards and video projection systems installed in every room, while the shower facilities were also given a muchneeded upgrade. As a result, the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The Kennedy lobby area also received a major facelift in the spring of 2013. A new floor was installed and a large collage showcasing some of the school’s many championship teams was created, while new posters recognize all of Manhattanville’s conference championships as well as the school’s long list of All-Americans, Players of the Year and other individual award winners. Team photos of all 20 varsity sports also hang in the main lobby as well in addition to large-scale photos of some of the College’s most prolific student-athletes, while a newly created Hall of Fame display will also be unveiled in 2014 as well. As a whole, the Kennedy Gym renovations help Manhattanville keep up with the top teams in the country and allow the school to continue its unique home-field advantage both on the fields of play and in the locker room. 2013 Manhattanville field hockey Media Guide 21 Support Staff Strength & Conditioning Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Strength & Conditioning staff maximizes the athletic performance of Valiant athletes by using the most effective and efficient training techniques to compete injury free at the highest level of competition. The aim is to instill a sense of self-discipline, respect and responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal of a team championship. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom floor of the Athletic Department hub, Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines that are available for student-athlete use both in and out of season as well as during the summer. In 2007, Manhattanville College opened the new Richard A. Berman Student Center in the center of campus that includes a first-class workout area for the general student population; as a result, Healthworks is now the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. Head Coach Corey Crane Seventh Season - Northern Iowa ’97 Corey Crane enters the sixth season of his second stint as Manhattanville’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and also serves as the school’s Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. Crane is responsible for managing and providing the design, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the strength and conditioning program utilized by the school’s 20 varsity sports. Crane brings a wealth of strength and conditioning experience to Manhattanville. He previously spent two years as the Associate Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point, working with all of the school’s 17 sports but focusing primarily on the Academy’s football, men’s lacrosse, hockey and volleyball programs. Crane also has worked as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Western Illinois University during the 2005-06 school year and previously spent one year in Purchase as Manhattanville’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach before taking an assistant position at Army for four years. Sports Medicine Graduate Assistant Coach Andrew Borsellino First Season - Ithaca ’10 Andrew Borsellino enters his first season as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Manhattanville in 2013-14. In his role, Borsellino works with head coach Corey Crane to manage the strength and conditioning program utilized by all 20 Manhattanville varsity sports. Borsellino comes to Purchase after stints as an intern at a pair of Division I schools, first at Iona College and then at the University of Maryland, where he instructed, educated and supervised all student-athletes in proper weight training techniques and sport-specific programs. He received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Ithaca in 2010 and also earned a master’s in exercise science and health promotion from California University of Pennsylvania in 2012. The Sports Medicine facilities at Manhattanville are located inside the hub of Manhattanville Athletics, Kennedy Gym, and are the first place where Valiant studentathletes from all 20 varsity sports come to receive comprehensive health care from any of the department’s fully-certified, full-time athletic trainers. The staff is available for all Manhattanville practices and games as well as throughout the day both during the school year and into the summer months for the sole use of Manhattanville’s 300-plus student-athletes. The athletic training staff has five main objectives: prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries that do occur; rehabilitation; health care administration; and professional development. The athletic training staff also has on-campus access to state-of-the-art training methods, including ultrasound capability, electrical muscle stimulation and whirlpool treatments. The Manhattanville training staff is also privileged to be affiliated with some of the best physicians in the Westchester area, benefitting from a close relationship with Plancher Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and head team physician Dr. Kevin Plancher, who works out of nearby Greenwich, Conn. Head Trainer Scott McIver 10th Season - Iona ’83 Scott McIver, MS, ATC, starts his 10th season as the head athletic trainer at Manhattanville in 2013-14. McIver previously served as the school’s head trainer from 2000-02 before returning to the school before the 2006-07 school year. After departing Manhattanville in 2002, McIver was named the head athletic trainer at Iona Prep High School, providing coverage for 20 sports and 250 student-athletes. Prior to his first stint in Purchase, McIver served as an associate athletic trainer at Division II Pace University for 12 years from 1989 to 2000, coordinating athletic training coverage and strength and conditioning programs for all Setter sports. His last position before returning to the school was as a certified orthotics fitter for Orthotics, Ltd. McIver received his master’s degree in Athletic Training and Exercise Science from Long Island University in 1990 and his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Iona College in 1983. A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association, he is also an Emergency Medical Technician and a licensed massage therapist. 22 Assistant Trainer Cameron Hillis Second Season - Connecticut ’91 Cameron Hillis, MS, ATC, enters his second season as an assistant athletic trainer at Manhattanville in 2013-14. Hillis came to Manhattanville after spending the last four years as the head athletic trainer at the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he oversaw games and practices for all 20 varsity sports. Prior to that, Hillis served as the head athletic trainer and a certified strength & conditioning specialist at Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y. from 2003-07, covering 11 Division II varsity sports and managing a staff of assistant trainders and interns. He also previously worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Division I Iona College for two years. Hillis earned his master’s degree in Health Science from Nova Southeastern University in 2010 and his bachelor’s degree in Human Development from the University of Connecticut in 1991. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and is also certified by the American Red Cross in CPR for the Professional Rescuer. SCHOOL HISTORY Founded in 1841 in a three-story building on Houston Street of Manhattan’s Lower East Side as the Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic boarding school for girls, Manhattanville has been educating students in the New York area for over 150 years. Six years after its founding in 1847, the academy relocated to an area just north of New York City on a hill overlooking the village of Manhattanville. Destroyed by fire in 1888, the academy was rebuilt on the same foundation and continued to grow both in curriculum and physical environment. In March of 1917 – 76 years after its founding as an academy – Manhattanville was chartered as a college by the New York State Board of Regents, allowing the school to grant undergraduate and graduate degrees for the first time. THE CORE VALUES Proudly a value-oriented liberal arts college for more than 150 years, Manhattanville is still guided by the mission “to educate students to become ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.” Manhattanville is committed to following its mission by: • Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and social development of each student within a community of engaged scholars and teachers; • Encouraging each student to develop as an independent leader and creative thinker in pursuing career and personal goals; and • Providing a diverse, inclusive and nurturing environment which develops in each student a commitment to service and leadership within a global community. internships both in the city itself and in the thriving New York City suburbs, including right here in Purchase! In the classroom, students have the opportunity to choose over 50 different fields of undergraduate study at Manhattanville; outside of it, there are at least 50 extracurricular clubs and organizations available for students to discover and cultivate their passions. A TRADITION OF SERVICE Co-educational since 1969 and nondenominational in its governance since 1971, Manhattanville’s original vision lives on in the tradition of service begun by the Society of the Sacred Heart. This tradition, which preceded the college’s charter, determined the character the school would have: a firm belief in the liberalizing effect of the liberal arts, a lively sense of tradition, a wide-ranging interest in the most humane manifestations of the human spirit, and a continuing effort to enhance the local community and to accept responsibility for this segment of human history. As a result, countless students are involved annually in a number of community service and social action programs. Last year, Manhattanville’s students contributed over 30,000 hours of service while gaining valuable experience in such areas as management, teaching and advocacy. At the heart of Manhattanville’s ethic of community service and service learning is the Duchesne Center for Religion and Social Justice. The center, which coordinates many of Manhattanville’s myriad service programs, serves as the coordinator, catalyst and incubator for community outreach, cultural, leadership and spiritual initiatives both across the Manhattanville campus and beyond. In addition, the Connie Hogarth Center for Social Action works closely with the Departments of Sociology and Political Science and helps the next generation of college-educated activists acquire the practical skills and knowledge necessary for work in some field of social change. NEW YORK CITY While on the school’s beautiful 100-acre campus, students are only a 30-minute car or Metro North train ride from New York City, giving them the chance to blend the leisurely pace of suburban life in Westchester with the most populous and exciting city in the United States. Manhattanville’s location offers students a unique opportunity to take advantage of all that New York City has to offer. Whether you want to enjoy a Broadway show, catch a professional sports event, tour a museum or art gallery, shop at the world’s best stores, dine at the country’s best restaurants, or simply stroll around and take in the city’s many well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty or Times Square, New York City offers something for everyone to enjoy. The school’s proximity to the worldwide leader in finance, entertainment, culture and more also offers Manhattanville undergraduate and graduate students a unique and exciting opportunity for jobs and MY SOLDIER Manhattanville’s most well-known social action program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour. Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging: “It was the letters that kept me going,” he said. “From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached then-College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004. Participants in the My Soldier program, who were not limited to Manhattanville students, sent letters and occasional care packages overseas to boost the quality of life for American troops. A non-politically affiliated program, My Solider was wildly successful, with participants from all 50 states and over 400,000 people in total, reaching more than 175,000 U.S. troops.
