GEORGE’S FAVORITE STORIES... are stories that George has written down over his 60 years in the seed business. Working directly with farmers is what makes this business fun and we hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as we enjoy hearing them. Many times George did not bother to write down dates (or places or names), but the stories stand on their own. By: George Ehrhardt The Albert Lea Seed House began as a branch of the Wedge Nursery. The Wedges were an old family name in town and had several sons. The farm seed business was split off from the nursery so Ralph Wedge could have his own business. Tom, Mac and George in front of the new Seed House Building in 2003. Unloading Seed, George and Casper L arson, circa 1995. Lou Ehrhardt met Elizabeth Wedge (Ralph’s sister) at Iowa State in Ames and they eventually married. After farming for a year near Elkader, the two of them moved to Albert Lea and Lou went into business with Ralph. As the business grew Ralph decided to sell Lou the retail business. In 1923 Lou bought the Albert Lea Seed House for $3000, and that’s the way it started. At that time, the business was located on Broadway Avenue in Albert Lea. Lou sold farm seed, melons, goldfish, cut flowers, apples, and Christmas trees whatever there was a demand for. Saturday night was the busiest time when farmers came to town to shop. Lou stored seed corn on cobs on the third floor of what was the Skinner-Chamberlain department store down the street from his office. Demand for hybrid corn grew steadily, Lou decided he should build a drying/grading plant and proceeded to construct a building on the east side of Albert Lea. George was in high school at this time and remembers traveling in the back of a Plymouth coupe rigged with a plant floor that went out past the bumper. It also had a bench on each side. A small crew would leave Albert Lea in the morning for Waseca (30 miles) to detassel corn. At harvest the corn would be brought back to Albert Lea, dried, graded and binned. Lou built two other buildings over the years on the east side of town to keep up with growing business, including additional warehouse space and sales area. In 1950 George entered the business. After several years in the business, George recalls a conversation he had with Pastor Berg from Clarks Grove. Pastor Berg asked George how he liked the business. “Well” George said, thoughtfully, “it’s OK, but you do end up thinking about money a lot.” Pastor Berg replied, “You know most business is like that. You know the really important thing isn’t so much what you do…it’s how you touch the lives of the people you deal with.” Our warehouse processing crew from the mid 80ʼs. In 1974 the Seed House moved to the west side of Albert Lea, expanding into an empty, broken down former fertilizer plant owned by Borden Chemical. Tom and Mac entered the business in the early 1980’s and took majority ownership in 2001. In 2003 they expanded into their new offices. '96 Thomas Meiser, Waterloo, IA - For 9 years I'd been doctoring on my back. It's troubled me all the time. I know one guy that had a $30,000 back operation. So anyhow, I've got a big bin of dry ear corn and I've got to start using it. I open the bin door on the bottom ring. It won't run out. OK so I open the next ring up. It really gushes out, buries me up to my armpits! I couldn't move. The wife calls 911. Nine different vehicles show up, sirens are going off all over the place. Finally, two guys grab me under the armpits. It really hurt but they pulled me out. My back continued to hurt bad for a week, and then, you know, it was OK and stayed that way. I was healed. 6 Consistent High Yields 95 Day C.R.M. You know, I mowed his hay and took care of it and he shelled my corn. When he wants his hay done, I'm there. When I need my corn shelled, he does it. So a year ago in December he's coming to shell my corn, he is. "I'll be there at 6:30," he says. And when he says something, he does it. Seemed plenty early to me, but I got chorin' done... the cows and hogs, and I told my wife to have some lunch for us around 9:30. Anyhow, we got the sheller cranked up. We're going good and come time I yells to him, "Let's have some lunch!" Damned if he don't pull a couple jelly sandwiches from his back pocket, pressed flat as pancakes they were and he bites off a piece and keeps right on shoveling into the sheller. I looked at him, I did, and thinks to myself, "now if a man can't take time out for a minute, you know, this life is only so long, you know" and I went in for a bite of lunch. Later when we're done, and just before he takes off with his sheller, he says to me - matter of fact-like, "That's the last XXXXing time I shell your corn, boy." And it was. The Ignite just does a much better job.”—Huntley, MN • Viking LibertyLink (Herculex® and Bt11) hybrids contain a gene which confers resistance to Liberty® herbicide. • Liberty® is a contact herbicide which is labeled to be sprayed over the top of LibertyLink corn from emergence through the V-7 stage of growth or a height of 24 inches (and 24” to 36” corn with drop nozzles). Rainfast four hours after application. Applications should be made between dawn and two hours before sunset. It has no residual activity or carryover. • Liberty® is a non-selective herbicide that controls a wide range of grass and broadleaf weeds including wooly cupgrass, velvetleaf, cocklebur, lambsquarters, andpigweed. All herbicides labeled for use on conventional corn may also be used for LibertyLink corn. • Clearly mark those fields which are planted to a LibertyLink crop to avoid the possibility of a herbicide application error. Due to various genetic causes, up to a 1-2% stand loss can result when Liberty® herbicide is sprayed on a LibertyLink hybrid. • The application of Liberty® herbicide to a non- LibertyLink crop will result in serious crop injury and yield loss. "Guess I thought when you turned 65 it was time to retire," he said. "So when I'm 65 I rent my farm out. Winter comes on and my wife and I go to Arizona. We've got a nice motel, a swimming pool, and we go out to eat with people. Well, a couple of months go by and spring comes. We come home and the first thing I did was to buy 50 head of feeder cattle and we never went back." ________ So I'm on a rented farm. One day I'm out in the yard and I see two men go by in a car. Real slow. They go on up to the corner, stop, turn around, and sit there a while. They come back onto the yard. Turns out it's a real estate man with a guy who wants to buy the farm. So I'm out. Somehow then, being forced to do something, I went out and tried to find a place. Ended up buying a 120 for $250 an acre. A good deal and a lucky break. I'd probably still be renting if they hadn't pushed me off. Sometimes things that look bad to start with, turn out to be good in the end. Developed through traditional selective breeding, PuraMaize gene blocking system impedes GMO fertilization by strongly favoring its own PuraMaize pollen. Highly effective in protecting corn from GMO field drift, PuraMaize delivers you peace of mind by preserving the non-GMO status of your grain. PuraMaize has been thoroughly tested over multiple years. In side-by-side field tests with GMO corn, PuraMaize either eliminates or virtually eliminates contamination. Blue River Hybrids has conducted three years of replicated testing at 20 locations, with consistently positive and reliable results. For the 2012 planting season, we will be selling PuraMaize hybrids in the 101 to 114 day range that perform well under most farming conditions. Quantity is limited. We recommend ordering early. To ensure an adequate blanket of pollen for thorough pollination, we strongly recommend planting a minimum block of 25 acres of PuraMaize. 14 Agrisure CB/LL/RW hybrids feature Agrisure Rootworm (RW) and Corn Borer(Bt11) events which provide: • Excellent in-plant, full-season control of corn rootworm. • Excellent control of first- and secondgeneration European corn borer and first-generation Southwestern corn borer. • Excellent control of leaf-feeding damage and suppression of ear-feeding damage from corn earworm. • Hybrids with Agrisure CB are LibertyLink® hybrids which can be sprayed with LIBERTY® and IGNITE® herbicides, providing growers with an alternative weed-management tool. It should be cut before it heads out for best forage quality. Plant 100 – 120 lbs/acre. It can be grazed deep into the fall and provides excellent weed competition and lots of green manure in the spring. It will germinate down to 35º F and performs better than other cover crops on infertile, acidic, or sandy soil. It has excellent feed value when taken as a forage crop achieving protein levels up to 18%.Taken for grain, it will yield 35-55 bu/acre. One South Dakota grower plants it after the ground is frozen. Plant 50 lbs/acre for cover crop, 100 lbs/acre for a good forage crop. Conventional Uncertified..............................50# Organic Uncertified.......................................50# FLAX* Flax is planted early in the spring. It is tolerant of light frost, but later planting doesn’t seem to affect yield. Weeds are a major problem due to slow establishment. We are not aware of local markets for flax but it is gaining acceptance as a human or animal supplement. Plant 50-70 lbs/acre. BUCKWHEAT* SEE COVER CROPS, PAGE 29 George Ehrhardt, ca. 1965 * = Variety not stated For more information on all small grain, please see: www.alseed.com – NOTE ONWINTER RYE – Be careful what you plant after Winter Rye. Decaying Winter Rye biomass can inhibit the germination and growth of weeds and seedlings of the next crop. This allelopathic effect seems to have the most negative effect of seed grass species. Most growers report excellent soybean stands following winter rye. HARD RED WINTER WHEAT Winter Wheat is a great over-wintering grain or cover crop. It provides excellent erosion control and weed suppression. When taken for grain it can yield 40-80 bu/acre with abundant straw. It can also be chopped for high quality grass hay. Sown in the fall, it will head out in the middle of May. Planted in the spring, it will not set seed Seed 120 lbs/acre. Visit www.alseed.com for winter wheat variety descriptions and availability. SOFT RED WINTER WHEAT See full description on page 39 WINTER BARLEY Winter Barley is commonly used as a fall-planted grain for animal feed. Our grower in WI has had excellent yields (125 Bu/acre in 2009) for 3 years and no winter kill. Some researchers at the U of MN believe that it is likely to winterkill without snow cover. We cannot guarantee that it will be winter hardy. In southern MN, seed by September 15 to get plenty of growth on it before freeze-up. Seed about 100 lbs/acre. It is one of the most commonly used and productive cool season grasses, tolerant to shade, fairly drought resistant with moderate winter hardiness. It regrows quickly and is a common component in pasture and hay mixtures. Best Use: Best suited for hay or pasture. Begin grazing at 6-8” and take animals off when grass gets down to 3-4”. Best Adaptations: It is better adapted to welldrained soils and is especially well adapted to mixtures with legumes such as alfalfa or red clover. Special Needs: Less drought and heat tolerant than Tall Fescue and less winter-hardy than Smooth Bromegrass. Close grazing in the fall is consistently associated with winter-kill so leave 3-4”. Its high palatability to all classes of livestock makes it susceptible to over-grazing. A minimum requirement is a regrowth period of no less than 28 days when rotational grazing. Planting range: March-May, August 15th-30th. Seeding Recommendations: Seed 2-5 lbs/acre in a mix or 8-12 lbs/acre straight. Suggestions: When using orchardgrass as a companion grass with alfalfa it is important to select later-maturing orchardgrass varieties. (Baridana or Latar) POTOMAC • Early Maturing. Good choice for road ditches. Not recommended as alfalfa companion. Description: Festulolium is a cross between meadow fescue and perennial or Italian ryegrass. It combines the quick establishment, high feed value, production, and palatability of ryegrass with the extra persistence and summer productivity of fescue. It has a higher sugar content that is easily digested, allowing animals to gain a high-energy ratio for milk/meat conversion. Provides excellent season long forage. Best Use: Festulolium is recommended for silage in a mixture with alfalfa or red clover in short-term rotations (2-3 years). Also used in fast-establishing pasture mixes or in over seeding pastures. Begin grazing at 4-6” and remove animals when grass is 2-3”. Best Adaptation: Likes medium-heavy soils. When mixed with alfalfa or clover, it provides a grass companion that will enhance palatability and quality in the ration. Special Needs: Should not be seeded alone due to its susceptibility to cold but has good persistence when mixed with legumes or other grasses. Planting Range: March-May, August 1st-15th. Seeding Recommendations: Seed 25-35 lbs/acre alone or 5-10 lbs/acre in a mix. Suggestions: Include Festulolium in hay fields and pastures to increase quality and tonnage. It is very winter hardy and very palatable. Best Use: Its energy storage pattern makes it a better hay crop than a pasture species although new varieties are showing better tolerance to grazing. It is generally mixed with alfalfa or clover for hay or pasture. Preferred grass in horse hay. Best Adaptations: Best production is on heavy ground and cooler climates. Special Needs: Its shallow root system makes it a poor choice on droughty soils. It is sensitive to high temperatures and its mid-summer growth may be limited. Planting Range: March-May, August 1st-30th. Seeding Recommendations: Seed 1-2 lbs/acre in mixtures or 8 lbs/acre straight. It is a deep rooted, hardy, bunch-type grass. The plant’s extensive root system helps it withstand drought conditions. It is more productive in midsummer than brome, timothy, or orchardgrass. New varieties have finer, softer leaves, a trait that improves palatability and digestibility. Can provide 2-3 cuttings of hay annually. Best Use: Best suited for hay or pasture. Can be utilized in pure stands or in combination with legumes. Perfect for winter stockpiling as cut hay or pasture. Begin grazing at 6-8” and remove animals when grass gets down to 3-4”. Best Adaptations:Well adapted to all soil. Special Needs: “When used as a hay companion, time the first cutting according to the maturity of the Fescue, rather than the alfalfa. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cuttings can be timed with the alfalfa.” Doug Gunnink. Use only low-endophyte varieties. Planting Range: March-May, August 15th-30th. ITALIAN RYE G RASS Description: Referred to as the Italian Stallion of cool season grasses by our friends at the University of Minnesota due to its quick re-growth, very early development in spring, and a prolonged growing period in the fall. It will not head out in the seeding year unless you get a hard freeze after seed has germinated. This results in high quality forage production without the low quality stems and seed heads. Considered an annual in the upper Midwest. Best Use: Best suited as a pasture crop seeded at full rate. When seeded at a lower rate it can be used in hay mixtures and as a nurse crop for alfalfa seedings. Begin grazing at 4-6” and remove animals when the grass is down to 2-3”. Best Adaptations: Produces best on heavier, moisture-holding soils. Special Needs: Keep off of droughty ground. Planting Range: March-May, August 1st-15th (for late fall grazing). Seeding Recommendations: Seed 4-5 lbs in mixture or 30-35 lbs/acre straight. Suggestions: Use a low rate of Italian Ryegrass (3-5 Lbs) instead of small grain as your cover crop over new alfalfa seedings. Can give you up to ½ ton of additional hay in the seeding year over that of a small grain. Seed early spring onto pasture that has been closely grazed the previous fall to improve yield and quality. Bag * = Variety not stated WAR M S EASON AN N UAL F O R AG E 31 M I L L ET S SO RG H U M SU DANG RASS PI P E R S U DAN G R ASS JAPANESE MILLET* Description: Sorghum-Sudangrass (S-SG) is a hybrid cross between sorghum and sudangrass. It is a fastgrowing, highly productive annual grass that is grown to maximize summer forage production. Depending on maturity at cutting, it can have protein of 9-14%, but will not have the energy of mature corn silage because it lacks grain. Planting at higher rates will produce finer stems which will make drying easier and increase quality. Sorghum Sudangrass will recover after cutting and given adequate moisture will produce multiple forage crops in a single season. Leave 6 inches of stubble to maximize re-growth potential. Best Use: Best suited for baleage, green chop, grazing, or silage. Best Adaptation: Likes good soils but is drought tolerant. Likes hot weather. Special Needs: The potential for Prussic acid and Nitrate build-up must be managed. Larger stems make drying for hay difficult. Planting Range: Mid-May – early July (soil temps 60º+) Seeding: Seed 15-35 lbs/acre ½-1½” deep. Can be broadcast or drilled. Description: Hybrid sudangrass is a fast-growing annual grass. It is finer quality than the Sorghum-Sudans, but coarser than Jap. Millet. It can grow from 4-7’ tall. Yields range from 3-5 tons/acre dry matter. Harvested early (30”), sudangrass contains high levels of energy and protein. Likes hot weather. Best Use: Hay, grazing, silage, and green chop. Leave 6-8” of stubble for best re-growth potential. Special Needs: The potential for Prussic Acid and Nitrate build-up must be managed. Planting Range: Mid-May – August 1st soil 60º+. Seeding: Drill or broadcast 20-30 lbs/a ½-1½” deep Description: Japanese Millet is an upright annual grass that grows very quickly on good soils. Given good moisture and fertility it can be cut 2 or 3 times. Jap. Millet has much finer stems than Pearl Millet or any of the Sorghums. When cut before heading the protein can range from 14-20% and our customers report that it is the most palatable of the annual summer grasses. It has no potential for Prussic Acid problems (unlike the sorghums). In a single-cut system it can reach 5’ in height. Best Use: Best suited for hay, pasture, and silage. Makes excellent feed for cattle, horses, and sheep. As with all grasses, earlier cutting leads to higher quality, lower yields, and more drying time. Cut before heading and leave 6” of stubble for faster recovery. Best Adaptations: Jap. Millet makes its best growth on good soils and requires good fertility. Once established, it is tolerant to wet soils and will survive standing water. Special Needs: Does not perform well on droughty or low fertility soils. Is not frost-tolerant. Planting Range: Plant into warm soil (60º F+), MidMay through mid-July. Seeding: Drill or broadcast 25-35 lbs/acre ½”-1” deep, culti-pack if possible. 50 lb. Bag HYBRID PEARL MILLET* Description: Pearl Millet is an erect annual bunchgrass which can grow up to 10’ tall. It is used as a multi-cut, warm-season forage grass. It has much coarser stems than Japanese Millet, but can produce more tonnage. The forage can be high in protein, is highly digestible and has no potential for Prussic Acid problems (unlike the sorghums). Best Use: Best suited for hay, pasture, and silage. It is most frequently used in beef cow/calf and dairy operations. Leave 6” of stubble for faster recovery after cutting or grazing. Best Adaptations: Likes good ground but can produce under low rainfall and low soil fertility. Planting Range: Mid-May – mid-July (not frosttolerant, seed requires warm soil) Seeding: Drill or broadcast 12-20 lbs/acre ½”-1” deep. 50 lb. Bag FOXTAIL MILLET Description: Foxtail Millet is a fast growing annual grass which can grow to 5’ tall. In the upper Midwest it is most commonly used as a single-cut emergency hay crop because it can be ready to cut in 60 days. Best Adaptations: Foxtail Millet likes good ground but is often grown in semi-arid regions because it has a low water requirement and early maturity. Planting Range:After the last frost date through midJuly. Seeding: Drill or broadcast 20-25 lbs/acre ¾”-1 ¼” deep. GERMAN MILLET SIBERIAN MILLET 50 lb. Bag 50 lb. Took him two years to work his way to the Dakotas doing work along the way. In the end, he homesteads near Pierre. No such thing as weather forecasts back then. One winter day he starts out with his bobsled and a couple mules to get a little load of wheat ground. On the way home a prairie blizzard hits. He stops right away by somebodyʼs stack of flax straw. He unhitches the mules and burrows his way into the straw pile. It took 3 days for the storm to blow itself out. It had been the kind of storm where you could get lost between the house and the barn. When it is over he crawls out, unties the mules, hitches them up, and continues on his way. The old man used to make me hold the lantern in my teeth when I pitched hay down from the mow. He was afraid, that if set on the smooth hay, the kerosene lantern might slide and tip and start a fire. Floyd Sorenson, Waltham, MN: I grew up on an 80 acre farm. 73 acres of crop. No electricity, no phone, 13 kids, 36 Guernsey cows. The farm was so small we had no pasture, so we kids grazed our cows in the ditches each direction along the road for three miles. We spent 2-1/2 hours morning and evening herding them. We grew potatoes under the barbed wire fence lines - along the lanes.... cows wouldnʼt eat them and weʼd get enough potatoes for 13 kids all winter.. It was at old Farrellʼs funeral. The church and cemetery werenʼt far from his farm. Somehow his mule had gotten out and followed the hearse to the cemetery where it waited around while they buried him and then went slowly home again. Folks said the mule thought a lot of old Farrell.
