Photo by Michel Cavalca WELCOME FROM RUSSIA TO TAIWAN TO NEW YORK CITY…WE’RE BRINGING THE HOTTEST COMPANIES AND ARTISTS TO THE MUSIC CENTER The 2015/16 Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center season brings the most sought-after and exciting choreographers and companies of our time to Los Angeles. From reimagined classics to ground-breaking collaborations, our season is brimming with the best in the dance world right now. There’s a new generation of dance-makers like Alexei Ratmansky, and inventive companies like Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, who are leading dance into a renaissance of repertory made for the 21st Century. That innovation is a staple of our season. Current, classic, and can’t miss! 2015/2016 SEASON SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREMIERE THE MARIINSKY BALLET AND ORCHESTRA – CINDERELLA October 8–11, 2015 With the right shoes, your whole life could change! St. Petersburg’s world–renowned Mariinsky Ballet (formally the Kirov Ballet) opens our season with Alexei Ratmansky’s Cinderella. Set to Prokofiev’s haunting score and performed by Mariinsky’s own orchestra, this classic story-ballet is reinvigorated by Ratmansky with vibrant choreography, feisty humor, and a glamorous 1930’s twist! Brimming with beauty, strength and breathtaking choreography set against powerful videographic imagery, Cloud Gate offers “A sharply moving synthesis of man and nature, east and west, death and rebirth...Lin Hwai-min’s own song of the earth.” —The Guardian PERFORMANCES Friday, Jan 29, 2016 Saturday, Jan 30, 2016 Sunday, Jan 31, 2016 7:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 2:00 p.m. DOROTHY CHANDLER PAVILION 70 minute program with mature content COMPLEXIONS CONTEMPORARY BALLET April 15–17, 2016 Photo by Rachel Neville. Complexions Contemporary Ballet brings a mixed rep this season that combines technical precision, power, passion and the occasional pop song. Founded by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson (two esteemed alumni of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), Complexions delivers an exciting, genre-bending performance that transcends traditions and blurs the boundaries of ballet and contemporary. June 17–19, 2016 Our Compagnie Käfig engagement brings the street to the stage, featuring an all-male, Franco-Brazilian company that is the result of an explosive encounter between French choreographer Mourad Merzouki and Brazilian dancers from the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro. Incredibly fun and fast-paced, their work is inspired by hip hop movement and capoeira with complex Brazilian rhythms and jaw dropping athleticism. The summation is a cool and fresh experience unlike any other. July 8–10, 2016 American Ballet Theatre, and the roster of ballet rock-stars, closes our season with a mixed repertoire program celebrating the greatest choreographer of our time, Alexei Ratmansky. The program will feature his Symphony No. 9, Piano Concerto No. 1 and a reimagined Firebird. The captivating ballet Firebird, set to the iridescent music of Igor Stravinsky and performed by a live orchestra, tells an enchanting tale of a mythical bird who possesses magical powers and helps two lovers overcome an evil sorcerer. Complete with stunning sets and costumes, Ratmansky’s Firebird packs a powerful punch of intricate dance and witty storytelling that’s sure to delight and inspire.
