SERVING WINNIPEG
SINCE 1935
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY
DEAN WEITEN
H
i, it’s me again. I hope that your spring is going well, so
far. My spring has been quite exciting! As some of you
know, I purchased a “new” old car back in January,
and my son and I have been working on it since. It’s a low
mileage 1957 Cadillac series 60 Fleetwood sedan that had
been sitting for over two decades. For a while, it looked like I
would have it on the road quickly and at a low cost. Well, you
know, nothing is as it seems. I took the advice of a more
learned friend, and before trying to fire it up, spun up the oil
pump with a custom made tool (among other things, of course).
There was almost no lubrication to the top end, despite my
best attempts.
After much gnashing of teeth, we pulled the engine and
transmission, and took them both in for tune-up. Well, what do
you know, both need a fair amount of work. The transmission
needed every seal replaced (no surprise), and one clutch pack.
The engine has a lot of wear (low mileage, hmm), plus the
corrosion and rust from sitting so long, so it pretty much requires
a complete rebuild. It’s going to be an expensive and drawnout process. I’ll be lucky if I have the car on the road before
August. <sigh>
On the other hand, I wouldn’t have started, if I didn’t think
that it was worth the effort. And, little in life that is worthwhile,
comes without hard work.
Some of the work around the club is like that car. It seems
now that much of what we are trying to do is a much larger job
than what we thought when we started. But, like a car that I like
and am committed to finishing, the results are going to be
worth the effort. If you haven’t already, consider pitching in to
help, since “Many hands make light work!”
We were just down in Grand Forks for the Prime Steel Car
Show last Saturday. What a beautiful day - very nice for a
drive. It was my first time at this car show, and I thoroughly
enjoyed it. The garage tours were the highlight of the show for
me. Wow, what folks can accomplish, when they work diligently
at it! Of course, the Rydell Hobby Shop was just spectacular –
what about that 1920 Locomobile, wasn’t that an amazing piece
of machinery? Or was it art? Hard to tell...
Similar to last month, I’ve received several more requests
for the involvement of old cars at weddings, etc. Again, I’ll
have them posted in the want ads section. I encourage our
members to participate, by all means – but ensure that your
insurance is current, and that your coverage is adequate for
the job.
My thanks this month to Wayne Pruden, who has
volunteered to take the position of Secretary for 2007.
Welcome, Wayne! It’s not that hard of a job... really!
A few more volunteers, and we will have a full executive! So
what’s everyone waiting for? Sign up today!
Also, thanks to Marilynn Schultz for putting so much work
into the Spring Fling. It was a great success, as usual. The
weather was a bit uncertain, but it turned out alright in the end.
Now, get ready for the Swap Meet, coming up fast on 13 May,
at the Red River Ex grounds beside the Assiniboia Downs.
Come on down, show off your cars, sell your old parts, buy
some new ones, and meet old friends. I hope to see you there.
Don’t forget that the general meeting is also 13 May, as usual.
Since it is on the same day as the Swap Meet, I know you will
be in that end of town. We will be having Bob Duncan of
House of Silver as our guest speaker at the meeting that day,
and the meeting will be short, so zip over around 2 PM and
socialize with your MCAAC friends indoors for an hour or so. I
look forward to seeing you there!
Happy motoring!
NEXT GENERAL MEETING
May 13 @ 2:00 p.m
Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave.
EDITORIAL
BY
BRYNE MCKAY
I have been involved in some heavy duty
discussions on what kind of car is featured on
the front cover of the MAAC 2007 Calendar of Events. After
hours of extensive research the mystery was solved. I quickly
narrowed it down to a few cars by noting that the moulding cuts
across the wheel well opening. The bumper and hub cap
helped me zero in on a make. Then I discovered an extra
curve in the bumper and the mystery was solved. I’ll give you
some time to ponder it by inserting the answer at the end of the
editorial. Important stuff, eh!
Have you been enjoying the coffee and doughnuts at the
meetings? I know I have. El Hay has been good enough to
look after that job even though it is not part of his regular duties.
I especially appreciate him coming in early to get the coffee
started so it is ready when the majority of the members arrive.
Thanks El.
If you know of good non-commercial web sites that our
members might be interested in please send them to me at
[email protected] and I will post them in the next Side
Mount Reporter. Wayne Pruden emailed me one for all you
Buick enthusiasts; www.kingoftheroad.net/buick/buick_1.htlm.
Wayne also mentioned there are 4 interesting cars in Selkirk
listed for sale at www.oldride.com/classic_cars, a 1946 Caddy,
a 1959 DeSoto, a 1947 Chevrolet & a 1931 Essex. I also found
on the site a ton of old cars listed from a salvage yard in
Neepawa. It might
have that parts car
you didn’t know you
needed.
Ladies
and
Gentlemen
our
supply of recipes is
running low. If we do
not get some soon I
will have to get
Eleanor Brunette on
your cases. It worked
last time.

INSIDE STORY
1951 CHRYSLER IMPERIAL LIMOUSINE MODEL C-53
WORDS & PHOTOS
BY
BOB ROSTECKI
In the Spring of 1964, I was driving West on the old Oak
Point road, now known as Route 90, and as I was passing
Great West Auto parts, I couldn’t help noticing a giant of an
unusual car sitting sad and forlorn behind a wire fence.
Speaking with the owner of the establishment, I was informed
that the car had been towed in a few weeks before with a bad
transmission, and rather than spend money trying to repair it,
the owner sold it to the wrecking yard. I examined this car, and
determined that the engine would turn over, and was not seized.
I was able to purchase this car for $125.00, and indicated that
I would return in a day or two to pick it up.
Returning in two days with the resources to tow it home, I
discovered that Mr. Craftee had removed the two rear
compartment jump seats to install in his boat. This was
disclosed to me by one of his employees on his last day of
work, who had nothing to lose by informing me of this situation.
Needless to say, the owner suggested that someone had
climbed over the fence and stolen them at night. Yeah, him, in
broad daylight.
After purchasing a shop manual and
the needed transmission parts from
Chrysler when you could still do so, I
was able to repair the transmission,
and enjoy the car as a daily driver.
Ann entered my life in 1967, and we
drove this car together for many miles
on various tours, and trips. As we began
to acquire older Classic cars, the
Chrysler was put into longtime storage,
with plans for a future restoration. Years
later, we removed the car from storage, and began to restore it
with parts accumulated through the years. This involved
removing the body off the frame, painting the frame, rebuilding
mechanical components, installing a more powerful Hemi
engine from a 1956 Imperial, gaining 100 horsepower,
installing electronic ignition, conversion to 12 volt electrics,
spin on oil filter, and new wide white wall tires. A rebuilt 1970
Dodge motor home Torque-Flyte 727 automatic transmission
was installed, instead of the original semi-automatic FluidTorque Drive transmission, with it’s inherent problems. Look
Ma, no clutch pedal !!!
All of the conversions created a much improved automobile,
and worked well with the original self energized disc brakes,
which had tremendous stopping power.
In the spring of 2006, we appraised
our situation with the 51, and were facing
a large expenditure for repainting, reupholstering, and some replating.
Realizing that investing anymore money
into this car for sentimental reasons was madness, and as a
result we advertised the car in Hemmings Motor News. We
received several inquiries to our ad, and sent out several sets
of high quality photos taken by Ann. We encountered picture
collectors, pen pals, phone pals, and tire kickers, but nobody
really serious. Out of the blue came an E-mail from Kuwait,
yes, Kuwait of all places. The E-mailer was a Swiss gentleman
living in Kuwait, and employed as technical adviser by His
Highness Nasser Al-Batah, the prime minister of Kuwait, who
happens to be a car collector. He owns 162 cars, and 71 of
them are Chryslers. Smart Man!!! He is also a member of the
Kuwaiti royal family.
He lost his car collection in
1990 when the Iraquis invaded
Kuwait. Everything disapeared
and not a trace of them was ever
found. They probably ended up
in Saddam Hussien’s son’s car
collection, which was later
destroyed by US forces so they would not exist as a shrine.
This is true, about 75 collector cars were destroyed, gone
forever.
The 51 was picked up from our driveway after receiving
payment, shipped to Montreal, and loaded on a ship for Kuwait,
where it’s restoration will be completed. It is satisfying to know
that this unusual, rare automobile will be finally restored to it’s
original beauty and granduer. It has come a long way from that
wrecking yard on old Oak Point road to the royal car collection
in Kuwait, and it is our satisfaction and pride that it was saved
from eventual destruction, and was acquired by an appreciative
new owner.

CRUISIN’
THE
PEG
SUBMITTED BY DEAN WEITEN
Cruisin’ the Peg is back for its 5th year and
promises to be bigger and better! MCAAC is
the feature club on 19 August…
As in past years, Canad Inns, Transcona, will host this popular
gathering of classic, muscle and specialty vehicles.
A few notable developments for Cruisin’ the Peg 5 are as
follows:
• Buffalo Bill’s has been replaced by Tavern United, which
is Canad Inns’ successful new restaurant / bar concept.
It’s décor, menu and general atmosphere offers a more
conducive appeal to car enthusiasts and spectators alike.
• The outdoor patio will be expanded and enhanced.
• Giant Tiger has located at the back of the lot and has
graciously offered their parking lot after 6:00 PM, every
Sunday. This was the previously undeveloped area
behind Blockbuster video. This increases the show ‘n shine
available space substantially.
• They are introducing a designated “Vendors’ Row” with
enough room for 7 regular vendors and 1 weekly guest
sponsor / vendor.
• They are offering dedicated and guaranteed (no hassle)
Feature Car Club parking. There should be room for
approximately 20 cars.
• Weekly attendance prizes, special contests and events
are being developed to attract more car enthusiast owners
and their families. They hope to attract spectators from all
over the city with a “carnival – type” theme that offers
inexpensive & safe whole family entertainment.
• A Show Coordinator who is supported by a team of Canad
Inns executives and associates will manage all events,
sponsors and vendors. The show coordinator, who is not
an employee of Canad Inns, will also serve as a liaison
between sponsors, vendors, charities and car owners.
Some of our past successes will return for Cruisin’ the Peg 5:
• Frank Andrews will be back with the CITI FM remote van…
playing all of our favorite rock classics.
• Of course, the Ice Cream Man will be around on those hot
summer nights.
• We are still located right on Regent Avenue… where
everyone can see us!

were made in the year 1955.
”I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s
going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $20.”
”Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be
long before $2000 will only buy a used one.”
“If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit. A quarter
a pack is ridiculous.”
“Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime
just to mail a letter?”
“If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to
hire outside help at the store.”
“When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would
someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we’d be better off
leaving the car in the garage.”
“Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it
impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be
wearing their hair as long as the girls.”
“Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract
for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if
someday they’ll be making more than the president.”
“I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances
would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters
now.”
“It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few
married women are having to work to make ends meet.”
“It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to
hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.”
“Marriage doesn’t mean a thing any more; those Hollywood
stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.”
“I’m just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to
a whole lot of foreign business.”
“Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the
Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder
if we are electing the best people to congress.”
“The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I
seriously doubt they will ever catch on.”
“If they think I’ll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.”

Last month, if you were attentive, you learned that you could
build a snow scoop from a 1973 Plymouth hood. So, has
anyone gone out to the back forty to dig out a car hood yet?
I thought not. Well, you’d better get busy; soon the snow will
be all gone. And hey, you needn’t worry about copyright or
patent infringement, YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION to use my
ideas. You can even improve upon them. Such as, there is
no need to use a valuable Plymouth hood where a cheap
Ford one will do. Hey, hey! Back off. That was just a joke.
Okay! This month’s column is for the benefit of all you old
and overweight guys who are tired of holding up your jeans
with a belt because it gives you a sore back. Even though I
myself am young and trim, I have a personal problem with
this and therefore came up with the following idea which
could save hundreds of dollars in suspension apparatus
and chiropractor bills.
Here’s what you do. Go and get yourself an old seatbelt
from a parts car. Get one that that will reach over your shoulder
to the front and the back of your pants. Now, go to the curb in
front of your house and wait for the next Police car or
ambulance to pass by and wave it down. Ask to borrow their
seatbelt scissors and split your seatbelt in half about ¾ of
the way. Give back the scissors. Next, go into your electrical
stuff and find three alligator clips and sew one on to each
end of the belt and, Voila! You have a new pair of suspenders.
If you are fresh out of alligator clips, an alternate solution
would be to take a cold chisel and hammer and pound a
buttonhole into each end of the belt. Get your wife or your
mother to sew two buttons on the front of your trousers and
one in the back and you’re done.

President Don Davidson reported that efforts
to obtain a special antique auto license
category from the government had been
suspended for the present. Government
officials were agreeable only to issuing a
special license plate in addition to the regular license plate
already required for all cars, and club officers did not feel this
would be to the club members’ advantage. The MCAAC
committee on licenses had not had time to sufficiently prepare a
brief on the subject, and it was felt best to defer further discussions
with the government to a later date.
A letter to Fred Groves, M.L.A. was read, requesting him to
suspend any action on antique auto license plates for the present
legislative session, and expressing our members’ appreciation
for his efforts on the club’s behalf.
Jack Mavins briefly outlined legislation concerning antique
auto licenses recently passed in Nova Scotia, where such a
license may be obtained for a fee of $5.00 per year, for a car
which is at least 30 years old or a recognized classic, is insured
as required by provincial statutes, has been safety checked,
and is not the owner’s only car. Cars carrying antique auto
licenses in Nova Scotia may not be used as family cars or for
any business or for transportation outside of reasonable hobby
uses. Jack felt we should aim for future legislation of this type in
Manitoba.

LETTERS
TO THE
EDITOR
Hi Bryne!
Regarding your editorial in the February 2007 Side Mount Reporter,
I am in total agreement with your comments on the distorting values of
the cars at the Barrett Jackson Auction.
As you stated that car XYZ sold for $100,000.00 doesn’t mean it is
worth that amount.
A prime example the first Amphie car sold for $125,000.00. The
second one sold for $85,000.00 and the third went for $65,000.00
U.S. funds. Half the price of the first car.
Further to these fluctuating prices, last spring I went to a swap
meet and a vendor had a plastic signal light lens for an Amphie car.
He wanted $35.00 Canadian. This spring I was surprised to see that
he still had the lens and he wanted $65.00. I questioned the sudden
increase in price, his answer was; ‘Did you see what the Amphie cars
are going for at the Barrett Jackson Auction.” So even the price of
parts are being inflated.
Keep up the good “Work”.

Letter To Chair of Constitution Committee
Headingley, Manitoba
22 April, 2007
Jim Drummond, MCAAC Constitution Committee Chair
Dear Jim,
Thank you for your and your committee’s efforts in the past two
years in the renewal of the constitution of the Manitoba Classic and
Antique Automobile Club. Although the changes as envisioned did
not get the necessary membership approval, I believe the discussion
it sparked was worthwhile, and the issues raised were important.
As we’ve discussed in the past several weeks, I would ask that you
reassemble your constitutional committee, and begin anew the process
of constitutional review. Use the input that we received during the last
process to help guide this new process. I have some suggestions and
opinions that I would like to share with you and your committee, which
I will forward under separate cover. My opinion or any member’s
opinion, should not carry any more weight than any other member’s
opinion.
At least two more persons, whose names I will forward to you, have
expressed strong interest in being involved in the process this time
around. You must keep your committee to a manageable size, but I
ask that you consider these persons as members of your committee,
in addition to any others who approach you with an interest.
I realize that this process can be intimidating. In order to provide
structure to the process, would you please consider the milestones
and time frames for the committee operation, and present this for
discussion at the executive meeting in July 2007.
Again, thanks for your work on the constitution in the past, and
your willingness to work on it some more.
Sincerely yours,
Dean Weiten
