EDITOR’S
NOTES
BY JEFF
RENTZ
...My head is like a football, I think I’m
gonna die, me oh me oh my wasn’t that
at party...(Irish Rovers-Wasn’t that a
Party)...Yes folks it was the party of the
year. Even though Kelly worried about
every little detail, it all turned out just
fabulous. The rain held off, and we ended up with a truly great
evening. Kelly looked gorgeous, and I of course was as
handsome as ever. It was a small wedding under a tent out at
a friend’s farm and was very informal. Kelly and a few friends/
family did all the cooking and baking to feed our guests, and
the open/free bar was in use till the very wee hours of the
morning. The evening was topped off with a tremendous
fireworks display that was enjoyed by all, even the RCMP came
by to watch. It was truly a wonderful night (from what I can
remember, I drank way too much), and I am a very fortunate
fellow to finally make an honest woman out of Kelly.
••
My apologies for the delay in getting out the SMR in July &
August. In July, both the publisher and I had holidays at different
times and as a result we missed each other to get things done
on time. As for August, well with all the wedding planning and
then the honeymoon I was a little pre-occupied and was unable
to devote the time to get it out sooner.
••
It has been brought to my attention that Paul Horch has stepped
up to volunteer to take over as Editor of your SMR newsletter. I
wish Paul the best of luck, and would like to thank all of you for
your support over the years and for all those that sent in articles,
pictures and information, without you it would not have been
possible. It was a unique learning experience and I have met
members and club supporters I otherwise might not have. I
know all good things must come to end, and I have had an
incredible ride. Thank you.

Not only were we fed by the Prairie Dog Central Railway, they entertained us too.
Our Planes Trains and Automobiles tour with the Prairie Dog
Central turned out great again. The day started off promising
rain, and it delivered in the morning. A number of of the cars
arrived at the Inkster Junction Station needing a wipe down.
However, before the train pulled out the clouds broke and the
remainder of the day was lovely. About 15 old cars met at the
station, the number somewhat lower than the usual turn out,
probably because of the morning weather reports. On our
way North to Grosse Isle we drove alongside the train at times,
the passengers waving enthusiastically as we passed.
As we approached the station there we were met by a rider
on a vintage penny farthing bicycle, and by the time we formed
a show, we numbered about 20 Club Cars. While we enjoyed
lunch courtesy of The Prairie Dog Central we were entertained
by a quartet playing Celtic tunes. After lunch, as we relaxed,
an aircraft did some low level fly-overs and many of the train
passengers enjoyed looking at the old cars. Our participation
is always appreciated by the PDC and by their passengers,
and is great fun for the MCAAC members who take part.

HERBERT SCHMIDT
HERBERT (HERB) ADELBERT SCHMIDT It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of Herbert Adelbert Schmidt,
Honorary Life Member of the Manitoba Classic & Antique Auto Club on Monday, July 21, 2014 at the age of 83 years. Herb is
survived and will be forever missed by his loving wife Lorraine and family. On June 5, 1931 Herb was born in Waldersee,
Manitoba. He married Lorraine Single on July 6, 1957 and they had a very happy and wonderful 57 years together. For Herb it
was family first followed by his pride and joy a 1931 Ford Model A roadster that he meticulously restored. He loved to take his
family and friends for rides in the rumble seat. MCAAC has lost another great friend of the car hobby.

COLLECTOR CAR
APPRECIATION DAY
JULY 11, 2014
WORDS AND PICTURES BY
OTTO SO
The month of July marks the 4th year the Specialty Equipment
Market Association (SEMA) has secured federal
acknowledgement as the “National Collector Car Appreciation
Month” of the year. It was passed by the Senate Resolution
513 of United States (2011) to name July as Collector Car
Appreciation Month. Since then, thousands of automobile
collectors and enthusiasts have hosted this event across North
America.
Manitoba is one of the 3 Provinces that officially recognized
and proclaimed July 11, 2014 is the Collector Car Appreciation
Day for this year. Bob Chubala of Manitoba Association of Auto
Clubs (our umbrella club) took the lead to organize this event
once more.
The last part of the Proclamation reads:
‘NOW THEREFORE BE IT KNOWN THAT I, Ron Lemieux,
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Heritage,Sport and Consumer
Protection, do hereby proclaim the July 11, 2014 shall be
known as
COLLECTOR CAR APPRECIATION DAY
in Manitoba, and do commend the thoughtful observance
of these events to all citizens of ourprovince.
Honourable Ron Lemieux
To celebration this occasion and the 50th
Anniversary of the Ford Mustang, special
parking was reserved for the Ford Mustang
Club on Memorial Boulevard. The Province,
Councillor from the City, MPI and Winnipeg
Police traffic division all sent their delicates to
say greetings. Among the speeches, I like the
words from MPI “.....we are working together
with all the car guys.....”. Doesn’t it say on our
licence plate we are “Friendly Manitoba”
already?
As Bob said, this is a non competitive car
show. This is a show for people to view, admire
and appreciate the efforts we put into our
collection of vehicles, wheels, or machines
whatever one likes to call them. The economic
impact to the local community and taxes
generated by our hobbyists is recognized and
celebrated.
From the eyes of the Americans, Winnipeg is
no longer as an unknown hack town. Last year, Bob’s write-up
together with one of my pictures was published on the back
cover of SEMA’s newsletter. The name Winnipeg, Manitoba is
finally on the map.

New Business
- Gary Glowa (Safety and Legislation) and Jim Penziwol
(Chairman) attended this meeting to hear comments from the
Club regarding the Collector Plate Program. Gary offered a brief
review of past discussions that lead to the introduction of the
program in 2013. Gary spoke about a ‘wishlist’. This included:
- The implementation of a movable single plate for owners of
multiple vehicles.
- Only vehicles over 25 years to be included.
- Exemption from emission testing and any other legislation in
the future.
- A discussion between several members and Gary lead to a
very informative exchange of ideas and concerns. These
included the lack of cost savings by switching from regular
plates, no lay-up coverage, paying the premiums over the 5
driving months and not over the 12 month period. Gary asked
for documentation that he could review to confirm these costs.
MPI intends to review claims from owners of cars in the collector
plate program, and would likely apply changes based on the
outcome. Wayne asked for a show of hands for members with
collector plates, members with regular plates, and members
using lay-up coverage. Approximately 1/3 of attending members
have collector plates, which might indicate that MPI’s review
will be inaccurate if the percentage is the applied to all car
owners.
