S
ome things never change! I am still the front runner for
the Hard Luck Award - my first attempt to replace the
tube on that flat tire on the club’s bus, failed miserably.
And the second… Apparently, I have a bit to learn about
replacing 30 inch by 3.5 inch tire tubes. But, with the law of
averages, I might eventually get it right.
But, no matter, how can I be upset, now that it is cruising
season in southern Manitoba? You know, the season when
they rip up the roads in a mad dash to get all of the repairs
done before the next freeze up. That means we get to do “road
repair slalom” in our club cars - oh, joy!
Seriously, though, it really is great to have some warm weather
at last. I can see the shows, meets, and cruising nights revving
up for summer. There are lots of neat cars out there, have you
seen them?
In time honoured tradition, we’ve been scooting from place
to place, checking out the cars. No, our own car isn’t quite
ready for prime time - something about needing the engine to
make it complete - oh, and brakes too. But it’s fun to see all the
other great machines out there, nonetheless.
Did you get to the Show-n-Shine in Portage la Prairie on the
17th? We saw a lot of cars that we had not seen before - and
there were quite a few, especially considering that the clouds
kept rolling in, then rolling out again. We had several club cars
out there. What a great tradition to get re-started again: driving
the “old highway” through Poplar Point. Well done!
I hope you were able to check out the Show-n-Shine at the
open house of The Waverley and Rosewood Retirement
Community at Wilkes and Waverley on the 3rd. Again, the
clouds came and went, but the rain stayed away. They treated
us really well, and we had a chance to visit with the nice folks
who call the facility home.
Check the events calendar for all kinds of things coming up
- please try to make it out for some (or all) of them, it’s a lot of
fun! We are planning on a few “impromptu” runs coming up,
so watch for notice of them too.
In the meantime, keep your tires properly inflated and your
fluids topped up, and enjoy the summer. I hope to see you on
the road - maybe even with my own club car, finished at last!

Did you know the Canadian Hot Rod Tour is
coming through Winnipeg on Saturday, July 21st.
Gord Forman of MAAC suggested that Member clubs meet the
contingent of tour vehicles at the Mint at 10:45am to welcome the
out-of-towners to Winnipeg. At noon, Landau Ford Lincoln Sales
Ltd. will be hosting a hot dog/soft drink lunch for registered
participants and everyone is asked to stop and visit with them. I
also understand the Mint will be conducting tours. Why don’t we
show up with our MCAAC banner and give them a big Winnipeg
Welcome?
Have you checked out our new web site yet? Rick Penko has
done a great job laying it out plus it is updated on a regular basis.
For example the classified ads are copied from the Side Mount
Reporter each month. This feature is the good news/ bad news
scenario. The good news is you are getting exposure for your ad
around the world. The bad news is you have to be careful when
you get inquiries or offers. There are a lot of con artists out there.
Back to the web site. We want to start posting pictures of member’s
cars on our site. Please email me a picture(s) with a short
description. Also we want authorization to use your first and last
name with the picture. You might only want to use your first name
or no name, your choice. If you are not on the internet mail me
your pictures with your name preference or give them to one of
the executive.
On Saturday August 11th the MCAAC is the “Feature Car Club”
at the “Cruz in Downtown” car show held in downtown Winnipeg.
Everyone stages on the Canad Inns parking lot near Polo Park
and then at noon we parade downtown around the Convention
Centre. Since we are the “Feature Car Club” we get preferred
parking plus we have the option of parading downtown or skipping
the parade arriving at York & Kennedy around 11:30am. Either
way let the workers know you are with MCAAC and they will
direct you to our parking area. Cost per car is $10.00 until July
15th, after July 15th $20.00. You can sign up at our July 8th general
meeting or at any of the cruise nights at either Pony Corral.
Everyone bring out your club car.
MCAAC is also the “Feature Car Club” at the Tavern United
cruise night on Regent Ave. Sunday, August 19th. Mark it on your
calendar and we will update you next month.

Hope you are enjoying the lovely weather. I read that scary
article about the European new cars (Reference to Editorial in
June Side Mount Reporter). Do you really think the auto
manufacturers would be behind such a sinister plan? (THAT
was sarcasm!!) I will stop driving my old cars when the
Canadian Army stops running used Dutch/German tanks. Think
of all the pollution those things will spew..........not to mention all
the garbage they will create on the desert when they get trashed
by the “enemy”. (THAT was truth....... unfortunately) Let’s see
what California will do before we panic. They have the toughest
emissions laws in
North America
and that hasn’t
stopped
any
cruising there.

CELEBRATION OF SENIORS’ MONTH FUNDRAISER

Around our April meeting, I received an e-mail
message requesting the participation of our club
for an inaugural fundraiser at The Waverley and
Rosewood Retirement Community. Funds were
being raised for the Arthritis Society. Based on
the communication back and forth with the
marketing director, it sounded like it would be a
good event.
On June 3, approximately 17 special interest
automobiles, most driven by club members,
attended the event. Among these were the club
bus, low tire and all, and no less than four beautiful
Buicks (well, OK, 3 plus my ’62 convertible). It
turns out that some of our members have ties to
this community. There was a good variety of
autos including two Model Ts, at least three more
pre-war cars, and a smattering through the 50s
and 60s.
Drivers were treated extremely well at this event,
being given VIP tags upon entry. This gave us
admission to the air-conditioned VIP Room inside
the facility, where platters of sandwiches and
pickled treats awaited. Once in the room, service
with a smile brought beverages and ice cream
treats. We were treated very well.
In the parking lot, there was a lot of banter
among drivers, looking over of the cars, and
exchanging of information about a couple of new
club vehicles. The weather was quite nice, with
just a hint of a sprinkle toward the end. Questions were asked by visitors
and answered by owners...some answers may even have been correct.
Inside, there was live entertainment on the piano and a silent auction.
I am told that approximately $1000 was raised. When approached about
making this an annual event, several of our members reacted positively.
Overall, I would say it was a well-run event, fun was had by all, and it was
a pleasure to
be treated so
well just for
going for a

OUR 1958 EDSEL CITATION

Our first restoration vehicle was a 1958 Edsel Citation two
door hardtop. At the time we had an original and running
1953 Ford Mainline two door coach.
The Edsel was purchase from MCAAC member Al Triechel
in 1992. It was the Citation model which was only made in
1958 and had the 410 cubic inch engine also only made in
1958. Citations were called the “Big E” as they were built on
the Mercury frame as opposed to the Rangers and Pacers
which were on the Ford frame. There are no body parts that
are interchangeable.
The car had very little rust as it was a South Dakota car and
they did not use salt on the roads.
You probably all know that we sold the car and are
wondering why I am telling you about a vehicle we no longer
own. We did enjoy the car. It was unique. Sometimes the
timing to move on just seems right. We don’t part with our toys
easily and we have many memories and memorabilia. I have
a one off Edsel jacket given to me by the kids when I retired,
die cast cars, photos and friends.
In 1992 we were in California on MTS business and went a
few hundred miles out of our way to attend an Edsel Owners
Meet at Cambria. It was there we first met Bob Ford from Mt.
Pearl NFLD. The scenery and cars were awesome.
Mustangs that were raced on Sundays and returned to the
rental agencies on Monday.
Attending the Vegas event was Roy Brown, Chief Stylist of
the Edsel. Roy was born in Hamilton Ontario and had a career
with Ford. Roy signed a photograph of our Edsel. Jim Arnold
In 1999 we flew to Las Vegas to attend the 11th Annual
Edsels in Las Vegas Show. We met more good people there
including a big guy named Edsel Henry Ford who was one on
the founders of the Edsel Owners Club.
We got to ride in other Edsels and a highlight was being
allowed onto the NASCAR track. The Edsels were assembled
in the pit area and led onto the track by the pace car. He took
them up to 75 miles an hour for a couple laps. It wasn’t quite
the same without being behind the wheel.
Next to the track is the Carroll Shelby assembly plant were
we had unobstructed access to the Caroll Shelby Collection.
This included Cobras, current production models and the Hertz
who designed the interior of the Edsel was also in attendance
and signed a photo of the interior of our car.
In 1996, Roy Brown published drawings of his rendition of a
1996 Edsel.
When we talked about selling the Edsel we thought it would
probably go back to its country of origin. Timing is everything

1 can yellow wax beans
1 can green beans
1 small green pepper
1 small onion
- salt & pepper to taste 2/3 Cup vinegar
1/3 Cup oil
½ to ¾ Cup white sugar or splenda
Method:
- Drain beans
- Mix with chopped pepper and onion.
- Add salt & pepper.
- Blend all together and let stand 24
hours or longer.

There are only 10 things in this world you need
to fix any car, any place, any time.
1. Duct Tape: Not just a tool, a veritable Swiss Army knife in
stickum and plastic. It’s safety wire, body material, radiator
hose, upholstery, insulation, tow rope, and more - in an easy to
carry package. Sure, there’s prejudice surrounding duct tape
in professional competitions, but in the real world, everything
from LeMans-winning Porsches to Atlas rockets and attackhelicopters use it by the yard. The only thing that can get you
out of more scrapes is a quarter and a phone booth.
2. Vice Grips: Equally adept as a wrench, hammer, pliers,
baling wire twister, breaker-off of frozen bolts and wiggle-it-tilit-falls-off tool. The heavy artillery of your tool box, vice grips
are the only tool designed expressly to fix things screwed up
beyond repair.
3. Spray Lubricants: A considerably cheaper alternative to
new doors, alternator, and other squeaky items. Slicker than
pig phlegm, repeated soakings will allow the main hull bolts of
the Andrea Doria to be removed by hand. Strangely enough,
an integral part of these sprays is the infamous Little Red Tube
that flies out of the nozzle if you look at it cross eyed (one of the
10 worst tools of all time).
4. Margarine Tubs with Clear Lids: If you spend all your time
under the hood looking for a frendle pin that caromed off the
pertal valve when you knocked both off the air cleaner, it’s
because you eat butter. Real mechanics consume pounds of
tasteless vegetable oil replicas just so they can use the empty
tubs for parts containers afterward. (Some of course chuck the
butter-colored goo altogether or use it to repack wheel
bearings.) Unlike air cleaners and radiator lips, margarine tubs
aren’t connected by a time/space wormhole to the Parallel
Universe of Lost Frendle Pins.
5. Big Rock at the Side of the Road: Block up a tire. Smack
corroded battery terminals. Pound out a dent. Bop noisy knowit-all types on the noodle. Scientists have yet to develop a
hammer that packs the raw banging power of granite or
limestone. This is the only tool with which a “Made in Malaysia”
emblem is not synonymous with the user being maimed.
6. Plastic Zip Ties: After 20 years of lashing down stray hose
and wiring with old bread ties, some genius brought a slightly
slicked-up version to the auto parts market. Fifteen zip ties can
transform a hulking mass of amateur-quality wiring from a
working model of the Brazilian Rain Forest into something
remotely resembling a wiring harness. Of course it works both
ways. When buying a used car, subtract $100 for each zip tie
you find under the hood.

On behalf of myself and the club members we would like to
welcome Edward and Linda Bailer of Winnipeg to the MCAAC.
They own a restored 1929 Chevrolet 4dr sedan with a 6cyl.
Elmer and Elaine Friesen of Altona are also new members
and we welcome them. They have two 1927 Fords, a Model T
Tudor and a Roadster, both in restorable condition. Elmer and
Elaine also have a 1926 Ford coupe in excellent original
condition.

7. Ridiculously Large Craftsman Screwdriver: Let’s admit it.
There’s nothing better for prying, chiseling, lifting, breaking,
splitting or mutilating than a huge flatbladed screwdriver,
particularly when wielded with gusto and a big hammer. This
is also the tool of choice for all oil filters so insanely located
that they can only be removed by driving a stake in one side
and out the other. If you break the screwdriver — and you will
just like Dad and your shop teacher said — who cares, it has a
lifetime guarantee.
8. Baling Wire: Commonly known as MG muffler brackets,
baling wire holds anything that’s too hot for tape or ties. Like
duct tape, it’s not recommended for NASCAR contenders, since
it works so well you’ll never need to replace it with the right
thing again. Baling wire is a sentimental favorite in some circles,
particularly with the Pinto, Gremlin, and Rambler set.
9. Bonking Stick: This monstrous tuning fork with devilish pointy
ends is technically known as a tie-rod separator, but how often
do you separate tie-rod ends? Once every decade if you’re
lucky. Other than medieval combat, its real use is the all-purpose
application of undue force, not unlike that of the huge flatbladed screwdriver. Nature doesn’t know the bent metal panel
or frozen exhaust pipe that can stand up to a good bonking
stick. (Can also be used to separate tie-rod ends in a pinch, of
course,
but
does
a
lousy
job
of
it).
10. A Quarter and a Phone Booth: See tip #1 above.
* If it won’t go - force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway....
* Any tool dropped while repairing your rod will roll underneath
to the exact center of the car.
Other useful tools:
BATTERY ELECTROLYTE TESTER: A handy tool for
transferring sulfuric acid from a car battery to the inside of your
toolbox after determining that your battery is dead as a doornail,
just as you thought.
DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly
snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks
you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, splattering
it against that freshly painted part you were drying.
E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool that snaps off
in bolt holes and is ten times harder than any known drill bit.
ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning steel
Pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age, but it also
works great for drilling mounting holes in fenders just above
the brake line that goes to the rear wheel.

Film Night

The evening was opened by the President, Bob Rostecki,
who welcomed some 130 members and their guests to our
first film night which was held in the banquet room of the
Empress Bowling Lanes.
The main attraction of the evening was the slides
(approximately 200) which were taken by club member Ken
Wright. These eye-catching slides in color were taken at
Harrah’s Museum in Reno, Nevada during Ken’s vacation. As
each slide was projected on the screen by projectionist Don
Davidson, they were vividly described by Ken who informed
us of the marque and also quoted us the original purchase
price. The audience was treated to the sight of many beautifully
restored Antiques ranging from – Appersons to Zimmerman;
Classics from – Auburn to Wills Saint Claire; Special Interest
from – Austin to the ill-fated Tucker car. Many fine examples of
gasoline, electric and steam cars were captured by Ken
Wright’s camera.
After the slides there was an intermission of about onehalf hour. Many thanks to all the ladies who took time out to

bake or buy the ample supply of scrumptious
dainties. Coffee was supplied. After the
satisfying fill, the audience returned to their
seats and watched with attentive curiosity
two films on early sports car racing.
A very big “Thank You” to one and all who
made it possible for our first and a very
successful “Film Night” (especially Ken Wright).

Editor’s comment: This “Coming Event” announcement was
taken from the MCAAC April 1964 Side Mount Reporter and
includes some history on one of our large shopping malls.
Polo Park Display – to be held on May 3oth indoors under
their new roof just recently completed to enclose the area
between the two rows of stores. This will be an all day display
and according to the Polo Park representative, every employee
throughout their establishment will be dressed in costume. So
if you are not doing anything that day, throw on your old duds
(if you have any) and come on down and help us police the
vehicles. Don’t forget to wear your “CLUB BADGES” as they
distinguish us from the rest of the people there. Clubs, swords,
guns, etc. will be supplied.

and Gerry Wilson, former MCAAC member, heard that it might
be for sale and the rest is history. Gerry has owned two other
Edsels and wanted to own one again. The beauty of it is we
still get to enjoy our Citation.
Do you know how to tell the difference from a USA made
Edsel and a Canadian made Edsel? The USA Edsel steering
wheels are colour coded to the interior of the car. Canadian
made Edsels all have white steering wheels.
Enjoy some of our neat photos. It helps when you have a
niece with a good camera eye.

- In President D. Weiten’s absence, Jim Drummond called the
meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.
1. Introductions of John and Bev Dyck from Cruz in Downtown,
and the guest speaker, Mr. Mike Marykuca, from Pioneer Glass.
2. The Agenda was circulated to all those present and accepted
by all those present.
4. Minutes from previous meeting were made available to those
present

5. Business arising from the minutes – There was some
discussion concerning the MS “Cruisin Manitoba” Ride on June
24th, it would appear that one team will be there from MCACC .

7. Correspondence – Numerous newsletters have been received
from a number of Auto Clubs located in Red Deer, Lethbridge,
Delta B.C., The Okanogan B.C., and Ottawa. These newsletters
are available to all M.C.A.A.C. members.
We received a poster promoting a show n’ shine in Carman on
June 26th.

review the material they received from Richard Smith and be
prepared at the next meeting with any comments.
10. Special Events – It was noted that July 22 was the cut-off
for “Early-Bird” registration for Cruz in Downtown, i.e. $10.00
(after cut off fee is $20.00) It was suggested that a copy of the
registration form appear in the Side Mount Reporter. Members
were also reminded of the June 17th MCACC run to Portage La
Prairie, meet at the Vintage Garage Museum at 9:30 a.m. Proceed
in caravan to Portage on the “Old Trans-Canada Highway, visit
“Vintage Cruisers Car Show at Island Park, then Fort La Reine
Museum, then home again. It would help if we knew who was
going, call Wayne Pruden at 757-2949.

13. Swap Meet – Gord Burnette presented a verbal report
indicating that this year’s swap meet was the most successful
ever. There were 1400 admissions not counting those who
showed up with cars of interest. There were 139 vendors, app.
400 lbs. of food were donated to Winnipeg Harvest, financial
figures will be available through the next treasurer’s report.
14. Bus – No report.
15. MAAC – W. Fuhr, MAAC will suspend meetings for the
summer, next meeting is in July. Still chasing the elusive “Collector
Plate Issue” and trying to maintain an awareness of Government
plans as they might affect Car Clubs.

8. Unfinished Business – A question was raised as to the status
of a letter that was to be written by Ross Metcalfe on the matter of
collector plates.
9. New Business – Otto So thanked the club members who voted
on their behalf in the recent “Wedding Contest”. It was noted that
the Committee that was struck to review the MCACC Constitution
last time will reconvene for a current review. It was noted that The
Waverly car show to raise money for “Joints In Motion” was a
success with about 22 cars (more next year) MCACC members
were treated as VIP’s etc.
10. Talking Tech – Mike Marykuca gave a presentation outlining
the perils of working on “older cars” and how they do have expertise
in this area. He also indicated that he can supply “tempered”
glass for older car side windows. They, Pioneer Glass, also have
access to a supplier for window channels, felts and fuzzies. They
do not work on convertible tops but could probably help out if the
need arose. In addition Mike made note that they are a
manufacturer and supplier of residential window needs as well
as Auto Glass.
