2012 was an amazing and memorable year
“I don’t have the words to describe the feeling
for Ronald McDonald House Charities of
of generosity that was extended to us during
Northeast Indiana. A dream, four years
our stay. The volunteers brought out board
in the making, took shape before our eyes
games and helped our older kids. I was able
as the community came together to build

with the in-kind support of local
vendors, came together to make
this House a home.

When we found out we were expecting triplets, we tried to imagine every
possible outcome of my pregnancy. My physician told us from the beginning
that our babies would be arriving early. However, knowing just how early
was impossible to predict. We were prayerful that our triplets would be born
at the point where they could come home with us after delivery.
We felt a strong need to be with our precious
newborns, and the Ronald McDonald House
gave us the opportunity to become day guests,
giving us access to its amazing services and
facilities. We were able to sit down with our
two-year-old son and have a family dinner.
On November 25, 2012, the
triplets were born at thirtythree
weeks
gestation
and
immediately admitted to the
Parkview Newborn Intensive
Care Unit. At that point, our
lives
immediately
revolved
around the medical care of our
premature babies.
The Ronald McDonald House provided a quiet setting to make important
phone calls and comfortable spaces for moments of down time. The Ronald
McDonald House was a place of quiet refuge.
The thirty days our babies spent in the NICU were made easier by the
hospitality of the Ronald McDonald House. The staff and volunteers blessed
us daily by simply offering a warm welcome, friendly smiles and words of
encouragement. The Ronald McDonald House provided hope and comfort to
our family in our time of need.

A Loving Heart and Giving Spirit
The Ronald McDonald House is blessed with a volunteer staff
of dedicated individuals who make our House a home. These
volunteers welcome families into our home 365 days a year. A
cup of coffee, fresh towels and a smile are the tools they use to
comfort the families that enter our doors. Volunteers give the
most precious gift of all: their time.
Doris Albertson has volunteered since the Ronald McDonald
House opened in January of 2002. “The best thing about
volunteering? Knowing your time has purpose.”
Ashley Hoover is one of the youngest volunteers in the Ronald
McDonald House. “I can only imagine what it would be like to
have a child in the hospital and need a shower, food or to just
get away from it all. My heart aches for these families and
being a volunteer each week makes me feel like I am, in some
little way, helping them during this difficult time.“
Elly Steward says, “The Ronald McDonald House is a wonderful
community outreach. I feel very privileged to participate in a
tiny portion of this gift. How special we are, to have one of
only twelve such marvelous facilities in the world.”
A Closer Look
Located inside the Parkview Regional Medical Center, the new Ronald
McDonald House is available to families 365 days a year. Whether for a few
days, or for a long-term stay, the Ronald McDonald House becomes a homeaway-from-home, providing overnight accommodations, laundry, computer
access, a kitchen with snacks and meals and a dining room. Families may
stay in the Ronald McDonald House as long as their child is hospitalized and
there is never a charge to stay. At the Ronald McDonald House we believe
there is strength and healing when families can stay together.

When I was 16, I had brain surgery to repair a ruptured
aneurysm. When I was first admitted to Parkview, I was
given a 50/50 chance of survival. Unfortunately, there was
no Ronald McDonald House then. While my father worked
and cared for the house and three children, my mother
spent her days outside the ICU awaiting her allotted
10-minute visitation periods and her nights on a lobby
bench. For six weeks, there was no place for her to change,
shower, snack, sleep or get away for a few minutes.
In late 2001, when I read that Ronald McDonald House
Charities had approached Parkview Hospital, my wife, Rita,
and I met with Executive Director Lisa Pacula to present
our first check. Why do my wife and I still make regular
monthly donations? So that families of other hospitalized
children don’t have to go through what my parents did. You
only have to give a little to get back a lot.

My beautiful baby girl Mackenzie was born almost 7 weeks
early. I ended up staying in the Ronald McDonald House the
entire 3 weeks Mackenzie was in the Parkview Newborn
Intensive Care Unit. The volunteers were so nice and friendly,
always trying to help and make our stay comfortable. I am
forever grateful for the facility, the staff and the volunteers.
