NEWS THE The newsletter of QuickSilver Swimming May, 2012 This Month: Coach's Corner 1 Reminders 1 Far Westerns 2 Give a Cheer! 3 Masters Meet 3 Q's Question 4 Birthdays 4 In the Spotlight 5 Impressions matter even when we want to say they don’t; we want to say things like, ‘don’t judge a book by the cover’ . . .’don’t judge people by the way they dress’ . . . but we do, it is a fact of life and sometimes you don’t get a second chance. . . . The first impression is all you get. When you wear a Sharks jersey it says something about you. . . I like hockey and I support the Sharks. When you wear a SF Giants baseball cap it says something about you . . . I like baseball, GO Giants! If you wear a SJPD uniform, one will assume you are a policeman and will assist those in need. Do you tell people these things? Do you need to? No, very often our dress gives people a clue and some information about us. Does it tell the whole story or a completely accurate one? No not always; but it does give information and people will start think about us a particular manner. What does it say about you when you put on the Q? What do you want it to say? Have you ever taken a moment and thought about what the Q means to you? What the Q means to your teammates? What the Q means to your coaches? This month I would ask you to think about these ‘Q’ Questions as we will be using this summer to meet with groups and identify what the Q means and how we can best represent that in our actions, both in the water and out. We are QuickSilver Swimming. We are building a future and much like when you put your SF Giants cap on the Q makes a statement. . . .What impression do you give the world when you put on the Q? -Janet May 19 - 20 June 4 June 8-10 Summer Starter LC Meet @ Morgan Hill Summer practice schedule starts QSS IMX Long Course Meet 11 As the highlight and grand finale of the short course season, Far Westerns 2012 did not disappoint. QSS swimmers achieved 35 new best times and 6 new PRT cuts, with 11 swimmers reaching championship finals in 20 different events. Special kudos to Morganne McKennan for winning her championship final in the 200 Breast and setting a new Far Western record in the process. Congratulations and great job to everyone from QSS who worked tirelessly to make this meet such a great success! The air was filled with a steady chorus of young voices cheering, "Go mommy!" or "Go daddy! as the competitors took to their lanes. It was a great day of racing and great fun for all. Coach Lucas takes his mark. 13 This month’s ASCA letter resonated with me as we at QuickSilver continue to blend and merge and become something better than any of us were individually. . .I think this is a great article for thinking both from a Parents Perspective and a Swimmers. . . it would be a great topic of conversation at the dinner table! Being on the Team vs. Being a Teammate [Thoughts NOT just for athletes….] - Compiled by John Leonard from InSideOut Coaching by Joe Ehrmann Being on the team benefits your personal goals and ambitions. Being a teammate benefits the goals and ambitions of your team and your teammates. Sometimes players on the team are drawn together by common interests; Teammates are drawn together by a common mission. Being on the team can make you a bystander. Teammates intervene in the lives and actions of their teammates. Sometimes players on a team like one another; Teammates respect one another. Sometimes players on a team bond together because of a shared background or compatible personalities; Teammates bond together because they recognize every player is needed to accomplish the goal of the team. Being on the team involves personal effort. Being a teammate involves the efforts of every player. Being on the team means doing what is asked of you. Being a teammate is doing whatever is needed for the team to succeed. Sometimes players on a team are energized by emotions; Teammates energize one another out of commitment. Being on the team can involve blaming others and making excuses. Being a teammate involves accepting responsibility, accountability, and ownership of the team's problems. [Editor’s Note: When I was a swim parent (and not coaching at the time) I always felt like I was part of the team… but in retrospect, this article reminds me I wasn’t always a good teammate. I wish I had thought about it a little more back then. Guy Edson] Being on the team makes you "me-optic," asking what's in it for me? Being a teammate makes you "we-optic," asking what's in it for us? They're easy to make, a good source of fast and slow acting carbs, and pretty tasty. Ingredients 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup sugar 1 8oz. container vanilla or plain low-fat yogurt 2 egg whites, lightly beaten 2 T. vegetable oil 2 T. fat-free milk 2 t. vanilla 1 1/2 cup flour 1 t. baking soda 1 t. ground cinnamon 1/2 t. salt 3 c. oats (old fashioned or quick, uncooked) 1 c. diced dry fruit, raisins, cranberries or chocolate chips In a large bowl, combine the sugars, yogurt, egg whites, oil, milk and vanilla. Mix well. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt; mix well. Add to yogurt mixture; mix well. Stir in oats and fruit. Spread dough onto bottom of ungreased 9x13 pan and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 28-32 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool completely on wire rack. Cut into bars and store in a covered container. Q News is a publication of QuickSilver Swimming.
