A generalist fair open to all forms of artistic expression including design, Art Paris Art Fair presents an overview of art from the post-war period to the present day. The thematic sections focus on discovery in particular with this year’s Korea guest of honour project, personal exhibitions in the Solo Show section, emerging talents with the Promises section for young galleries and digital art with monumental projections on the façade of Grand Palais. Exploring the regions of Europe Art Paris Art Fair continues to attract leading international galleries such as Daniel Templon (Paris), Sundaram Tagore (New York, Hong Kong, Singapore) and Flowers (London, New York). The 2016 selection is particularly focused on exploring the different regions of Europe and its cities, each with their own individual identities such as Zurich, Munich and Milan. Their galleries have an artistic vision which reflect passion and commitment, like an antidote to the prevailing uniformization seen in so many art fairs. With 58 newcomers, the 2016 edition maintains the 48% of foreign galleries and 52% of French galleries. First-time participants include Bob Gysin (Zurich), Art Bartschi & Cie (Geneva), La Balsa Arte (Bogota), Silk Road Gallery (Tehran), Studio Giangaleazzo Visconti (Milan) with a comeback from Ditesheim & Maffei Fine Art (Neuchatel). In terms of French participants, Art Paris Art Fair gives pride of place to regional galleries with three participants from Marseille (Galerie Gourvennec Ogor, Béa-Ba and Najuma), two galleries from Bordeaux (D.X and Xénon), Lille (Cédric Bacqueville and Art to Be Gallery), and one each from Lyon (Françoise Besson), Rennes (Galerie Oniris - Florent Paumelle) and Strasburg (Galerie Jean-Pierre Ritsch Fisch). Newcomers from Paris include Eric Dupont, RX, Françoise Paviot and MAGNIN-A while Sèvres-Cité de la Céramique returns this year. ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 5 GENERAL PRESENTATION Focus on the East: South Korea guest of honour Under the leadership of guest curator Sang-A Chun, the invitation of South Korea as guest of honour highlights the vast wealth of the art scene from the “Land of Morning Calm”. With close to 80 artists represented by 8 galleries both from Korea (Seoul, Daegu and Paju) and some 26 Western galleries, this project spans the emergence of very specific forms of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present day boom in creativity. The first generation of modernists is represented with artists such as Ungno LEE, a historic figure who produced an innovative body of work at the crossroads between Eastern and Western traditions, shown by Galerie Thessa Herold in a personal exhibition. Others include masters of Dansaekhwa, the mysterious Korean art of monochrome painting, such as Lee Ufan and Myeong-Ro Youn represented by Gana Art gallery. Also on show are some of the leading figures of the contemporary scene such as MoonPil Shim (Galerie Lahumière and Shilla Gallery), Lee Bae (Galerie RX), Kwang Young Chun (Sundaram Tagore Gallery and Omer Tiroche Contemporary Art) and Boomoon (Flowers Gallery). The young generation of emerging talents is well represented with for example installations by Kiwon Park (313 Art Project) and Yun Soo Kim (Soso Gallery), the dreamlike sculptural creations of Myeongbeom KIM (Galerie ParisBeijing) or the delicate graphic work of Min Jung Yeon (Galerie Maria Lund). As part of the celebrations of France-Korea year, exhibitions and installations of Korean art will be visible throughout the capital during Art Paris Art Fair. IBU Gallery, in collaboration with RX and Hakgojae galleries, present “Standing Man” by CHUNG Hyun, a group of 47 monumental sculptures in the garden of the Palais Royal. The Cernuschi Museum is organising an exhibition of contemporary Korean art from the 1980s onwards along with a number of new rising talents. The Korean cultural centre dedicate an exhibition of the painter Oh Se-Yehol and is hosting a talk entitled “Contemporary Korean art: exploring the past and shed light on the present,” moderated by Art Paris Art Fair Korea Guest of Honour curator Sang-A Chun. (Korean Cultural Centre, 2 avenue d’Iéna, 75116 Paris – Friday 1st April, 6pm). South Korea Guest of Honour at Art Paris Art Fair 2016 is part of the official programme of France-Korea Year 2015-2016 (www.anneefrancecoree.com). ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 6 GENERAL PRESENTATION Solo show Introduced in 2015, the “Solo Show” section includes some 20 personal exhibitions scattered throughout the fair. ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 8 EDITORIAL by GUILLAUME PIENS Fair director ART PARIS ART FAIR 2016: An art fair focusing on discovery Art Paris Art Fair is the leading fair for modern and contemporary art held in the spring in Paris which this year brings together 143 galleries from 22 countries. The fair remains true to its concept of “cosmopolitan regionalism” introduced four years ago. In 2016, the fair continues to concentrate on parts of Europe and the singular art scenes of cities like Marseille, Milan and Zurich while also looking further afield to places like Azerbaijan, Colombia, and Iran, and of course Korea, this year’s guest of honour. Open to all forms of artistic expression including design, Art Paris Art Fair offers an insight into art from the post-war period to the present day while the thematic sections focus more on discovery The invitation of Korea as guest of honour is the last of a trilogy of editions dedicated to exploring the art scenes of the East. This year’s edition was overseen by guest curator Sang-A Chun and is particularly impressive with close to 80 Korean artists on show and a series of side events. It reveals the striking richness of the art scene from “the land of the morning calm,” with work dating back to the 1960s, right up to the present day’s boom in contemporary creativity. The “Promises” section presents emerging talents from an ever wider range of countries while the “Solo Show” part offers a score of personal exhibitions disseminated throughout the fair, allowing visitors to discover or rediscover the work of modern, contemporary or emerging artists. Digital art is given pride of place with a programme of monumental nighttime projections of work on the colossal façade of the Grand Palais. The “Springtime in Paris” VIP programme for collectors and art professionals offers the best of what is happening on the Paris art scene, highlighting the new cultural landscape of the City of Lights in the 21st Century. Art Paris Art Fair is pleased to welcome a number of new partners such as Maison Daum which brings a specific exhibition on the theme of street art for which it has collaborated with a number of artists. Also new this year is Bus Expo, in partnership with Air France, offering an itinerant exhibition to five of the artists from the Solo Show section of the fair. The objective is to make contemporary art available to the widest possible audience, which resonates with the values of Art Paris Art Fair and its aim of being a spring fair accessible to art lovers from all walks of life. ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 9 Digital Projections on the facade of the grand palais Every evening from 30th March to 3rd April 2016, from 7pm to midnight, the façade of the Grand Palais undergoes an amazing transformation, lending itself to the imagination of artists who this year come from Azerbaijan, Korea, France and Switzerland. This programme of monumental video projections is in partnership with Vidélio. Col.l.age + (Sho Jang & Min Kim), Hypnagogia, 2016, 15 mn, Music: Jiin Ko, Paik Hae Young Gallery (Seoul) Hypnagogia: the transitional state between sleep and wakefulness ; the hypnagogic state of consciousness during the onset of sleep. Entitled Hynagogia, this video is inspired by the famous parable by Chinese philosopher Zhuang Zhou called the Butterfly’s Dream, in which the wise man dreams he is a butterfly and when he wakes up, ask himself whether he isn’t in fact the butterfly dreaming about Zhuang Zhou. ENCOR Studio (Mirko Eremita, David Houncheringer & Valerio Spoletini), Duel, February 2016, 7 mn. Galerie Madé (Paris) ENCOR is a studio founded by Swiss artists Mirko Eremita, David Houncheringer & Valerio Spoletini. The way to decrypt the work of the ENCOR studio is to proceed by layers. The work explores the intrinsic fundaments of graphic design, re-arranging primitive and powerful symbolic forms and drawing inspiration from architecture, mathematics and sound vibrations. Hypnotica (Javid Guliyev, Agarahim Ibrahimov, Aygun Hasanova, Farhad Farzaliyev), The Breath, 2016, 5 mn, Yay Gallery (Bakou) “Hypnotica” is an artists’ collective from Azerbaijan whose main focus is architecture in its many forms, which it approaches as living organisms. In The Breath, the façade of the building comes to life, inhaling and exhaling, pulsating at its own rhythm, like “living pillars from whence confused words arise.” (Baudelaire) Kim Joon, Snake, 2015, 5mn loop, 3D animation, Park Ryu Sook Gallery (Seoul) Better known as the “tattoo” artist, KIM Joon, (born in 1966) creates astonishing digital images of the human body. In Snake, super-imposed bodies are constantly moving and are entirely covered in reptilian patterns in bright, deep colours suggesting the animal desire that lies buried deep in human beings. Moon-Pil Shim, Contemplations, 2016, 10 mn, Music: Young-Dong KIM Galerie Lahumière (Paris) and Gallery Shilla (Daegu) Light plays a fundamental role in the work of Korean artist Moon-Pil Shim (born in 1958). In Contemplations, the artist works with the forms and colours associtated with abstract art, with moving lines, circles and light that slowly change colour. Antoine Schmitt, Façade Life, 2016, 10 mn, Galerie Charlot (Paris) In Façade Life, an abstract luminous shape made of white pixels moves across the façade of the Grand Palais. Programmed by algorithms, artificial life and physical models, it reproduces the life of a wild animal locked in a cage: a nervous body that is free but imprisoned at the same time. With light rubbing against matter, the building becomes a territory. Façade Life is part of the wider work of Antoine Schmitt who focusses on the process of movement, its causes and forms. And March 2016 will be one of the highlights as “the land of the morning calm” is guest of honour at Art Paris Art Fair. But how much do we really know about South Korea, and in particular its art scene? In contrast with its Chinese and Japanese neighbours, South Korea’s art is relatively unknown on the international scene in spite of outstanding resources and a remarkably supportive environment. But South Korea is gradually becoming recognized as a leading cultural player in terms of its programming and infrastructure. Certain distinctive features such as the partition of the peninsula, tradition that endures alongside (hyper) modernity and cutting-edge technology provide some of the clues and visual tools – figuratively speaking - to explore South Korean art and help to give an overall picture. In search of lost identity The political context has played a major role in the evolution of South Korean art. The massive pro-democracy demonstrations led by the trade unions and student movements between 1969 and 1987 not only transformed the political landscape, but also changed the way artists were seen and contributed to the rise of new forms and techniques of artistic creation. This period of democratization on the one hand saw the systematic repression of art by the dictatorship and on the other, the emergence of two major common objectives: the development of a new Korean artistic identity, and modernization in every sense of the word. The Japanese occupation, the partition of the country (in 1945) and a tragic fratricidal war all combined to produce a strong desire among South Korean artists in the 1960s to go back to the source. The problem of the essence of traditional art had been the subject of numerous aesthetic debates, with some artists even supporting its reinstatement. At the same time, avant-garde movements were fuelled by the deep changes in the daily lives of the South Korean people as society marched headlong towards consumerism as a consequence of the absolute priority given to the industrialization of the country by the government. Later, in the 1970s, abstract South Korean art developed its own language under the influence of Western informalism, abstract expressionism and minimalism. This was a period of triumph for the Dansaekhwa school that produced the abstract monochrome works which became the model for modernism. As a reaction to this, another movement known as Soomookhwa based on traditional Korean ink painting took over in this quest for identity. The period that followed was marked by the struggle against dictatorship and democratic transition in the 1980s. This brought a politicized, realist current known as Minjungmisul countering Dansaekhwa, which by that time had become almost institutionalized. ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 14 South Korea Guest of Honour South Korean Contemporary art: the promise of eternal metamorphosis by Sang-A Chun, Guest curator Abstract art, visual modernity The success of Dansaekhwa on the international scene was not built in a day. South Korea is one very few countries among the nations that became independent after the World War II to have had an exceptionally rich variety of artistic movements: the search for the origins of traditional painting, its modernization, the introduction of Western painting, the confrontation between abstraction and realism, the introduction of new media and installation, experimentation with mixed techniques… In the middle of this constellation of different movements, abstract art eventually stood out as a beacon, enabling South Korean artists to move on to the next phase. From the end of the 1950s to the present day, different groups of abstract artists have come and gone. Kim Whanki, a pioneer of abstract Korean art discovered and depicted the abstract that is inherent in nature and life. Nam Kwan and Lee Ungno redirected traditional painting with a modern approach inspired by the abstract aspects of the techniques of calligraphy. Oh Sufan works with shapes to try and represent the lively spirit of the Orient (ki) through the most primitive forms. As for Lee Kang-So, intuitive gesture and the creative process itself are what make up the essence of his work. Meanwhile, Youn Myeung-ro’s world is constantly renewed though his use of materials and gesture to express the traces left in his mind by his own thoughts. Geometric abstraction is what defines Suh Seung-Won although he maintains a lyrical tone in his compositions while Kim Inkyum uses geometric shapes to reveal flatness in three-dimensional forms and vice-versa. Dansaekhwa artists (Park Seo-Bo, Chung Chang-Sup) use repetitive gestures to create their materials as a way of stressing the importance of time and the process itself. They have now been followed by a new generation of artists who have adopted this practice. For his part, Lee Bae uses coal as a symbol of eternity and energy and through his gestures, transforms it into something with a spiritual dimension. Noh Sangkyoon elaborately glues sequins to cover an entire canvas or object, creating optical illusions which provide different readings of the same piece. In Moon Beom’s work it is the dynamism of the gesture that creates the surface of the painting. Meanwhile, Jang Seungtaik’s search for the concrete often reveals the immaterial and the intangible. Thus, South Korean abstract art can be said to have certain specific features: the combining of traditional and modern techniques (the use of hanji, Korean mulberry paper or calligraphy), the use of expressive materials, the preponderance of spontaneous and intuitive gesture and the rejection of narrative form. South Korean abstract art opens the way to a visual modernity that contributes to the development of South Korean contemporary art as a whole. ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 15 South Korea Guest of Honour South Korean Contemporary art: the promise of eternal metamorphosis by Sang-A Chun, Guest curator Living (with) the border, between partition and interface According to numerous art historians, 1987 was the beginning of contemporary art in Korea with the end of a virulent confrontation between the Dansaekhwa and Minjungmisul movements – abstraction and realism – at a time when political unrest gave way to profound cultural changes. The democratization of the country paved the way for cultural diversity and the success of the Olympic Games in 1988 brought material comfort, including for artists of the so-called “386 Generation” who were born in the 1960s. After the 1997 financial crisis, a number of important venues for contemporary art were built with private funding. In addition, several contemporary art biennales were created (Gwangju, Mediacity Seoul, Busan, Anyang Public Art Project…) along with a large number of alternative spaces and artists’ residencies. This, combined with a dynamic art market, contributed to the blossoming and rise of the South Korean art scene. In what is the only divided country in the world, the tensions and convulsions of the political situation have had an undeniable impact of creativity. The border and the DMZ, the demilitarized zone, has become the subject not only of study but is also an artistic action site. Flash Wall, the monumental installation by Park Kiwon at the entrance of the Grand Palais is a prime example. Made of tangled rolls of twisted wire, it is a reminder of the history of the border between the two Koreas, symbolizing peace and reconciliation. At the same time, the five Obangsaek hanging balls in traditional Korean colours represent the perception of space for Korean people. South Korean modern art has developed thanks to the conflictual relationship between divergent narratives and the new generations of artists play a “frontline” role by exploring this slippery yet magnetic territory, becoming its attentive and circumspect observers. Artists are forever scrutinizing the countless fractures that divide South Korean society, and at the same time, different horizons open up before their eyes and they serve up their vision, making copious use of new media and mixed techniques. ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 16 South Korea Guest of Honour South Korean Contemporary art: the promise of eternal metamorphosis by Sang-A Chun, Guest curator By “sublimating” objects of everyday life or humble activities, artists reveal the dark side of a hasty modernization (Choi Jeong Hwa) and also question the social role of art, its essence and values (Lee Wan, Jun Sojung, Hong Young In.) They also question the status of a work of art or the process of making it through trans-disciplinary experimentation (Hur Shan), occasionally highlighting the link with consumerist culture (Gwon Osang.) Others embark on pilgrimages to historical places laden with buried memories (Lim Minouk, Che Onejoon) to try and unearth traces of the past in order to shed light on the present. Some endlessly paint constantly changing landscapes like a utopian vision of the world where there is no limit to visibility or time (Kim Yun Soo, Min Jung-Yeon). The single narrative and territorial certainty are put into question and replaced by plurality and ambiguity (Park Chankyung). The dubious relationship between archives and real facts is questioned through a variety of devices and narratives (Kim Ayoung, Nam Hwayeon). The rewriting of a Korean history stripped of illusion and its social traumas is on-going though sign language, poetry and choreography (Jang Minseung, An Jungju). Many focus on intimate and imaginary stories of individual people, also incorporating the notion of time (Won Seoung-won, Chun Kyungwoo). The history is Korean art is not over, of course. The border is no longer an obstacle but serves as a mobile interface. It teaches us that among many possible outcomes, the only promise that remains immutable is that of “eternal metamorphosis.” ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 17 SOUTH KOREA GUEST OF HONOUR PERFORMANCES “RITUALS” Performance Programme Entitled “Rituals” and specifically designed for Art Paris Art Fair 2016, this programme of performances seeks to explore the relationship in Korea between artistic creation and the notion of the ritual. Selfless and rejuvenating, these series of actions are rigorously executed - like religious rites. They can also be habitual banal gestures, repeated consciously or not. These rituals play a protective role and generally help people cope with life. YEESOOKYUNG (Séoul, 1963) – When I Become You - Booth F8 Thursday 31st March from 7.15pm to 7.30pm and Saturday 2nd April from 3pm to 3.15pm Performer: Junghwa LEE / Music: Young Gyu JANG / Costume: Young Seok KIM Yeesookyung explores the concept of symmetry through a variety of experimental practices that are inspired by Buddhist thought. She paints simultaneously with both hands or uses hypnosis to conduct a spiritual regression session. Her reading of the world is circular, not linear. She speaks of the relationship between the self and others, between perfection and imperfection, the conscious and the unconscious, the real and the virtual. How these opposites relate to each other becomes blurred and diffuse. YOUNG IN HONG (Séoul, 1972) – Let Us Dance - Main Alley of the Fair Thursday 31st March, Friday 1st April and Saturday 2nd April from 5pm to 5.20pm Young In Hong’s inspiration comes from the demonstrations that took place in Seoul in 2008. Teenagers took part in these in large numbers which torpedoed the accepted traditional image of a passive youth. The artist re-contextualizes the event using a flash mob. Her aim is to reveal the unexpected and the creative energy through this device which, far from obscuring social fractures, sheds greater light upon them and in the process, raises questions about the status of the artist and of the work itself. Materials special installation by Sulki & Min in the VIP Ruinart Lounge * This duo of graphic and visual artists has made a video using what they call infra-flat drawings, claiming inspiration from Duchamp for their invention of the notion of “infra-flat.” With this work, they explore a new idea of visibility, one that seeks out an “inverted depth,” that can be imagined to beyond absolute flatness. They also challenge the essence and values of art by questioning its materiality. * access with a VIP badge With the support of ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 18 SOUTH KOREA GUEST OF HONOUR INSTALLATIONS Flash Wall, 2014 - monumental installation de Kiwon PARK - Entrance of the Grand Palais Commissioned by the East Side Gallery in Berlin, this monumental installation made of wire, steel, cloth and colored balls representing the five traditional Korean colors evokes both the wall that divides Korea and the desire for peace and unification so dear to South Korean people. With their watercolours and collages, these two artists speak of the brief but intense history of their region in the 20th and 21st Centuries. The gallery explores and constantly reassesses what forms the borderlines between art, work, beauty, fashion and communication. Women artists are still the subject of questionable prejudice. What today is still considered out-of-place, strange or mysterious is in fact a normal relationship with the world. What do we mean by that? Some 200 years after the beginning of feminism with Olympe de Gouges, considered its heroic pioneer in France, 150 years after the suffragette movement, some people still expect women artists to produce “feminine” art on the basis of some sort of old-fashioned mental correlation with present-day post-feminist mores. ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 71 The walls: Historic work and contemporary creation Erró, Icelandic born in 1932 In collaboration with the Vienna Angerlehner Museum, Ernst Hilger Gallery presents the series entitled Femmes fatales, made between 1987 and 1996. Painted in bright, even joyful colours, Erró gives a humouristic twist to his renderings of the myths of beautiful and deadly superwomen. He jumbles categories and time frames, juxtaposing all kinds of iconic women, from Joan of Arc to Catwoman, Madonna, Walkyries and Tank Girl to others drawn from history as well as our own daily fantastic world of advertising, news photography, political documents, comic books, newspaper cartoon strips and the stars of the silver screen. With the support of Erró, Femmes fatales Series, glycérophtalique paint on canvas, 195x97cm, ©Katharina Stögmüller Galerie Ernst Hilger. ART PARIS ART FAIR March 31st - April 3rd 2016 | Grand Palais 72 DAUM EXHIBITION ON STREET ART For more than a century, there has been an on-going love story between Daum, the legendary crystal and glass manufacturer and the leading artists of the day, giving their work a second lease on life in glass and colour. From the École de Nancy to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Majorelle, Dali, George Braque and Arman, Daum has missed none of the great moments of artistic creation and modern know-how with this everlasting marriage between art and craft. On the occasion of Art Paris Art Fair, Daum presents a number of artistic pieces from the street art movement and its origins with Cyril Phan, aka Kongo, one of the leading figures of graffiti art. Also on show is famous French street artist Jérôme Mesnager, Romuald Hazoumé who stands against modern slavery, Gonçalo Mabunda who uses weapons as a creative medium and finally, Alain Séchas who is influenced by the world of comics.
