Humanely Speaking H I N S D A L E H U M A N E Director’s Desk “Snow flurries began to fall and they swirled around people's legs like house cats. It was magical, this snow globe world.” ― Sarah Addison Allen As I’m writing this, the wind chills are 25 below zero. There’s 14 inches of snow on the ground. I have to carry my dog to and from the spot on the grass which we shoveled out for “business.” The radio and TV warn us of black ice, frostbite and dangerous wind chills. S O C I E T Y / W I N T E R 2 0 1 4 HHS and the Pet Transfer Program The loveable dogs and cats that arrive at our shelter doors each year, find their way here for any number of reasons ranging from owner surrender to simply being lost. One other way they find us is through Pet Transfer. Over the past decade, Pet Transfer programs have become much more prevalent and are responsible for saving countless animals’ lives on the line at high-kill shelters. Jenny Vlazny, HHS Operations Manager, initiated a life-saving Pet Transfer program here in 2006 by making weekly visits to Chicago Animal Care and Control and the Animal Welfare League. She would walk the adoption rooms and determine who she felt HHS could accommodate and adopt out. “Back then I Ace was transferred in to would hand-pick dogs to bring back to HHS,” said HHS and was adopted Vlazny. “Today it’s all done via email, and the aniinto a home after just mals selected are delivered to our door.” ten days here. Our shelter receives at least half a dozen email pleas every day from organizations with pets in need of rescue or rehabilitation via transfer. In some midwest shelters, dogs past their stray hold of 3-5 days are euthanized, so rescue groups are critical to survival in those cases. HHS works primarily with two rescue groups: Quincy K-9 Connection and West Hancock Canine Rescue. These groups provide the crucial function of acting as intermediaries between transfer facilities and destination organizations like ours. Lori Halligan, HHS Executive Director, and her dog Zoe, brave the elements on a cold January day. Yet I look outside and I see beauty everywhere in icicles that stretch from gutters, almost touching the ground. Snowdrifts catch a glimmer of sunlight. Frosty window panes reflect mini landscapes of crystalized wonder. It truly is magical, this snow globe world. It all depends upon how you look at it. If we didn’t have winter, would we really appreciate the delight of spring? Like a salted caramel, the extreme contrast makes everything taste a little sweeter. continued on page 3 “HHS, you all are amazing and I thank God every day that you are a part of our team and help save our precious dogs. Thank you!!” -Anne from Quincy K-9 Connection The process of transfer begins with emailed photos of the animals and their accompanying descriptions. The selection process for destination shelters requires the ability to “read” the photos of the pets. A dog straining on its leash is going to be an active dog. One that is crouched and avoiding eye contact will be timid. Another factor to consider is whether or not the pet is likely to be adopted. Making those final selections is an emotionally draining process. Puppies of almost any breed are accepted whenever possible. But difficult cases are given equal consideration. HHS is known for taking in everything from pit bulls, seniors and heartworm positive dogs, to Great Danes, Chihuahuas and all sizes in between. continued on page 3 1 GOOD NEWS! PAW S F O R A P P L A U S E Holiday Highlights A big HHS “Thank You!” goes out to everyone who supported our holiday fundraising programs in 2013. From the Giving Tree ornaments at the shelter and Holiday card sales here and at participating veterinarian offices, to Sponsor an Animal and holiday appeal donations, the funds these initiatives generated will allow us to continue to provide shelter and care for our homeless animals year round. For that we send our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in contributing to these programs. Holiday Gift Wrapping Our wonderful volunteers came out in force during the holidays to wrap gifts and collect donations as part of our popular annual gift wrapping fundraiser. This year we hosted 16 shifts, 28 volunteers and 10 pet therapy teams at Barnes & Noble, Oak Brook and Frugal Muse, Darien. Thank you all! HHS volunteers Dennis and Betty Tetens with Pepe, working with HHS Volunteer Coordinator, Laura Donohue (center) and her cat Edelweiss at Frugal Muse in Lemont. HHS volunteers Kathy Deiskow and Patti Lamantia wrapped gifts with a life-like stuffed dog at Barnes & Noble in Oak Brook. 2 Special thanks are due for giving from the heart to help HHS animals: Cameron Labbato, Sara Wimmer, Claudia Moffat, Ava Newcomer, Britt Nerad, Alex, Nicholas and Luke, and Allison Siepman, as well as Jack McCoy, Liz Wittenberg and Willow Grove Pet Clinic from Alice Abraham. Thank you to Grace and Nicholas Schubkegel who each donated $50 of their Christmas money to help our homeless animals. And to Ellie Watkins for donating cash, paper towels, cat & dog food and cleaning supplies. Thanks are also due to Julia Hanley for donating her Christmas gift money. Thanks also go out to Alyce Frantz and her Daisy Troop for donating. Anthropolgie in Oak Brook and manager Emily Gibbons held a Sit, Stay, Love Drive to raise much-needed funds. The Student Council of Brook Forest School in Oak Brook collected shelter supplies for their “PAWS”itively Bully Free program. More gratitude goes to Grace Episcopal Church for donating proceeds from its Pet Blessing. More thanks go out to Julia, Michael and Grace Reilly for making and selling Rainbow Loom bracelets and donating the proceeds to HHS. Buddy Fund donations were made for Cinnamon, Peanut and Dillon thanks to: Judy Porta, Susan Oremus, Teresa Connors and Francine Cannarozzi. We continue to appreciate the ongoing loyalty and generosity of Casa Margarita and Chase Lotfi. A GREAT BIG Thanks to Merrick Animal Hospital in Brookfield and Wet Nose Pet Boutique in Oak Brook for donating funds earned at their respective Pictures with Santa events. Special thanks to those Big Hearts for Little Paws Kids’ Club members who celebrated birthdays and made donations to our shelter animals: Jackson Wolf, Matthew Ozark, Finley Werner, Erin Howard, William Heidorn birthday by Heather Hernandez, Abbie Moody, and Lincoln Virant, pictured here. Shelby Kruep donated handmade toys for our homeless cats and dogs, and Kate Payanet donated homemade blankets for our animals as well as money toward their care. The dogs and cats of HHS received a bounty of toys and supplies donated from Regent Products in River Grove. Thank you! Many thanks go out to our friends at Petco Foundation, who presented HHS with a check at the grand opening of their new Unleashed store in Hinsdale. The wonderful people at McGrath Lexus popped in one day in December to help spread holiday cheer by sponsoring every one of the dogs at our shelter. What a wonderful surprise! Special thanks to Carole Cech and all of the HHS staff members who worked on the newsletter this month. Corrections & Clarifications We apologize for the omission of volunteer, Joan Hoffmann in the Fall 2013 issue. Joan should have been noted as an esteemed member of our 200+ volunteer hours club. We thank you for your dedication, Joan! Pet Transfer Program… continued from page 1 Once pets are selected, rescue group volunteers clean crates and secure them in transport vans to give animals in need a ride to freedom, sometimes travelling long distances to move the pets to destination shelters. Maintaining a consistent number of adoptable pets and breed varieties, while utilizing all available kennel space, and still ensuring there is adequate room for local cases (there were 126 canine owner surrenders at HHS in 2013), is a little bit of a guessing game according to Vlazny. “Thankfully we don’t receive as many owner surrenders as in years past,” she said. “Hopefully that’s due to better decision-making when acquiring pets, and more people making life-long comJenny Vlazny, HHS mitments.” With as much careful planning as possible, Operations Manager, runs the there are still those occasions in which there is a short pet transfer program. wait-list for a surrender. In 2013, HHS transferred in 403 total animals including 324 canines and 79 felines. An example of how transfer programs make a difference is the case of “Ace”, the border collie mix who spent two months at one shelter, and a year at another, before arriving at HHS and being adopted just ten days later. Until there are no more homeless pets, pet transfers help get more animals into their forever homes. To help curb pet population, HHS participates in the World Spay Day Promotion and offers referrals to callers who inquire about reduced-rate spay/neuter services. All HHS pets are spayed or neutered before they go home. Each new year brings new goals to the shelter to get even more animals adopted. However, those goals are always aligned with ensuring each animal is matched with the best possible home. Until they all have their forever homes, HHS will be here for those animals that come through our doors. We are forever grateful for the individuals and families who open up their hearts and homes to these pets. Director’s Desk continued from page 1 I’m so glad so many people choose to provide loving homes to the cats and dogs of Hinsdale Humane Society. A few of the pets who come up for adoption have lived terrible experiences… filthy conditions in puppy mills, neglectful owners, crowded spaces in a hoarding situation, even physical abuse. Many of you provide loving homes to these animals who have survived such atrocities. These frightened, undersocialized pets are transformed by your love and care. But sometimes I think, “Who rescued whom?” You may have provided a comfortable home to your pet, but what did he or she provide you? Unconditional love and a sense of responsibility? A shoulder to cry on one day and a smile of contentment on another? One of my favorite things to do in winter is to cuddle up on the couch with a book and a cup of hot chocolate… an experience made all the better with my dog Zoe by my side. Pets add so much to the beauty of life. Oh sure, the dog needs to be walked in the snow and ice. The litter box needs to be emptied. The wallet might feel a bit lighter after we’ve purchased a month’s supply of pet food. And our hearts may be broken when a beloved pet leaves this world to cross the rainbow bridge. These are small prices to pay, considering the intangible rewards. When I walk into an otherwise dark and deserted house, it is my dog who welcomes me home. Some of you are surrounded by cats, swirling around your legs. Is there anything better? I can’t imagine my life without a pet. Not just in the dead of winter, but every moment of every day. Two Paws Up! Volunteer Marilynn Pavlik and Humane Educator Kym Iffert hand out cupcakes to members of the Big Hearts for Little Paws Kids’ Club at the Nov. 9, 2013 party. Our Humane Education team honored members of our Big Hearts for Little Paws Kids’ Club with a special party on Nov. 9 held at HHS. From requesting gifts for the animals in lieu of birthday presents to donating their own allowances and lemonade stand profits, these local children have found creative ways to donate funds to the shelter and make a difference. This party was meant to show them how much they mean to us and the animals here. Thank you to all of our Kids’ Club members! Early January is finals time for high school students in Hinsdale. HHS recently received such a gift from the estate of Mrs. Helen Nowicki with a letter stating: “Mrs. Nowicki actively supported the work of your charity and the principles on which it was based. It was her desire to make it possible for you to continue that work well after she was gone.” It was her hope that the funds she left would aid in continuing and expanding HHS’ good work of protecting the animals that were so dear to her. The funds Mrs. Nowicki so generously donated will go towards the health and well-being of the animals in our care. We hope to honor her kindness and good deeds in the work that we continue to do on behalf of homeless animals. Mrs. Helen Nowicki bequeathed funds to help continue the work of Hinsdale Humane Society. 9 Save the Date(s)… HHS Bowling Fundraiser Willowbrook Lanes, March 8th Mark your calendar for our 5th Annual “Bowling for the Animals” Charity Event on Saturday, March 8th, 11am2pm at Willowbrook Lanes. Companies that participate in a matching gift program will typically double or triple the amount given by employees. A $100 donation has the potential to become a $200-$300 gift! Of course any amount donated is greatly appreciated and goes directly to helping Hinsdale Humane Society care for homeless animals as they await adoption. But imagine how many more pets could be helped by simply checking into a matching gift program. Please take a moment to check with your employer to see if they match gifts. If they do, it’s as simple as filling out your company’s paperwork and submitting it to the shelter along with your donation. Just think of how many more homeless animals will benefit from that gesture. Following are the companies who provided matching gifts to HHS in 2013: Allstate, CNA Foundation, Crown Family Philanthropies, Home Depot, Illinois Tool Works, Ingredion, Insurance Services Office, Inc., Marmon Group, McDonald’s Corporation, McMaster-Carr Supply Co., Mead Johnson Nutrition, Microsoft Giving Campaign, Retirement Research Foundation, Tandem HR, Inc.,Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. Foundation and U.S. Cellular. Many thanks for your generosity! We offer our sincere gratitude to those individuals who have donated to our organization and to the corporations that match those gifts. Your generosity allows all of us a chance to make a difference in the lives of dogs and cats looking for their forever homes. Thank you! “Pennies for Paws” 2014 Spare Change Drive, April 7th - May 2nd The “Pennies for Paws” spare change drive, now in its 6th year, has raised over $28,000! That’s a lot of change, helping a lot of animals. Join the Hinsdale Humane Society and area schools as we work together to help raise awareness of homeless pets, to educate hundreds of children, and to make a difference in our community. Animal related lesson plans and classroom presentations are available to instructors at no cost. Classrooms, students, children’s clubs or groups are invited to collect spare change for the Hinsdale Humane Society. Participating classrooms can win great prizes, too, including movie tickets, pizza, and trophies. Mr. Hagar’s 5th grade classroom at Elm School in Hinsdale participated in the “Pennies for Paws 2013” program. I think my dog needs training but I’m not sure where to begin and what options are available. Can you help? A. Not many people know that January is National Train Your Dog Month. What better way to ward off the winter doldrums than working with our furry friends. Why not make one of your New Year’s resolutions be a training program that can help keep boredom at bay while providing the mental and physical exercise we all need throughout the year. Did a new puppy arrive over the holidays? A puppy socialization class can teach your family how to work through teething and housebreaking issues and get everyone off on the right “paw”. Properly and safely socializing a puppy should start between 8-10 weeks of age, and a good puppy class will help a family understand why dogs do the crazy things they do and how to make it work to your advantage. Your family and friends will appreciate a puppy that doesn’t jump, bite, chew, steal things or cower in fear when introduced to something new. The veterinarian and groomer will appreciate that your pup is comfortable with being handled for exams, nail trims or bathing. Your dog can even learn to LOVE these visits! Do you have a dog that could use some work with good manners? Jumping, barking, and general destructive behaviors are frustrating for anyone facing them. Owners get easily fed up not knowing how to control a dog. But the dog is also frustrated because it may just be looking for interaction and winds up being isolated instead. A basic obedience class works through frustrations, creating better communication with your 4-legged companion and teaching you how to motivate a dog based on “what do I want?” rather than “what do I have to do?” Do you already have the perfect dog? Therapy dog training can keep both you and your dog active through helping in the community. And it’s a great way to reach out to others as a team. Having a well-trained therapy dog encourages us to bring our pets along on outings and often enhances our social lives (dogs make for great conversation starters)! Training your dog is not only beneficial; it’s also a lot of fun. Hinsdale Humane Society now offers multiple dog training classes at several levels to help improve the lives of families and their pets. Dogs thrive on mental stimulation—they love the chance to learn and practice something new. But more than anything, they will relish the opportunity to bask in your undivided attention as you work toward a common goal together. Time spent training is time spent bonding, making priceless memories, and building a strong relationship between you and your dog; what better way to start a New Year? FROM OUR MAILBAG We adopted Samuel in September of 2013. I want to thank all at the shelter for letting us have him. At first he was a little nervous but soon became a part of our family. He is a joy and is wonderful with our granddaughters, who love him very much. I can’t praise him enough. He has brought love, joy and happiness into our lives. He loves to have his picture taken. Thank you. Tony & Jeanine C. Sevie & Jen K. I adopted Emily, renamed Sevie. I just wanted to contact you and say how much we love her and how good she is doing. She is such a lover and ball of fun and we couldn’t be any more happy with her. She is such a great dog! Thanks Hinsdale Humane Society! Jen K. We adopted our Trixie four years ago this February. She came to us a scared, timid little old lady (10 years at that time) and has become a treasured family member, full of love, energy, snuggles and confidence! Here she is in her Christmas finery a few days back. Thank you for all you do! Allison V. We Want To Hear from You!
