Christmas spirit was in full swing at the first annual Photos
with Santa event, led by the HHS Ambassadors, Saturday,
November 29, 2014 from 9-noon at sun-dappled Immanuel Hall in Hinsdale. The morning could not have been
more magical. With a steady procession of some 50 families and their pets (49 dogs, 1 cat and 1 guinea pig to be
precise!) there was a non-stop flurry of activity.
HHS friend, Steve Tucknott of GuntherSnaps Photography,
volunteered his time and talents photographing everyone
from tiny newborn babies to a giant mastiff named Kramer. The images he captured were then sent to attendees
for use on their holiday cards.
From entire families to single pets, creatures great and small came out to meet
Jolly Ol’ St. Nick and help raise money for
the animals that come through the doors at
HHS.
The HHS Ambassadors organized the entire event, bringing holiday spirit, cookies, cocoa and adoptable animal
ornament crafts for the kids, all while running a seamless
event. Special thanks are due to Mistie Lucht, Ambassador Chair who led the event, and Nate Lucht, her husband, an HHS Board Member, who posed as Santa for the
photos. Attendee donations from the day raised $1000 for
the shelter.
“Christmas is not a time nor a season,
but a state of mind. To cherish peace and
goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to
have the real spirit of Christmas.”
- Calvin Coolidge
This is the second event hosted by the Ambassadors since
their inception in 2014. The group of enterprising women
is helping to raise awareness of animal welfare and all of
HHS’ programs that benefit the community. Through their
work, they are reaching out into the community with
fundraising events that also happen to be a whole lot of
fun. Our sincerest thanks go to the Ambassadors and to
all of the individuals who came out to support HHS at the
Photos with Santa event. Plan on attending another photo
shoot with Santa in December 2015, and be sure to bring
your four-legged friends along for the merriment.
HHS staff members on hand were thrilled to see alumni, Paddy (adopted 2012), Biscuit and Willy (adopted together in 2013), and
HHS Therapy dog Gus joining Santa for the festivities.

HHS Volunteers: A Unique Breed
“The world is hugged by the faithful arms of volunteers.” -Terri Guillemets
“No one gossips about other people’s
secret virtues.”
― Bertrand Russell
When staff members arrive in the morning, they incessantly begin talking. Not to
one another, but to the animals.
“Good Morning! I’ve missed you, too. Are
you hungry?”
“This is your lucky day. Today you join
your new family!”
“Look at you! You’re so beautiful!” Or the
opposite: “Oh, my! You’re so dirty. Let’s
get you into a nice warm, bubble bath!”
In any given year, there are hundreds of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that
come through the shelter in need of help. That number doesn’t even include
an odd bird, guinea pig, rabbit or ferret in need of shelter on the way to their
respective forever homes.
While there are currently eight full and part-time staff members dedicated
exclusively to the care and adoption of the animals 365 days a year, it wouldn’t
be physically possible to give each of these pets the one-on-one attention they
receive without the
300 Shelter & Administrative Volunteers who shower
them with extra love
and attention.

Other volunteer groups at HHS include Board members, Ambassadors, and
Junior Board members who are all dedicated to bringing in critical funding and
raising awareness of our mission in the community and beyond.

of her daily routine of cleaning and caring
for the animals.
Bertrand Russell has it wrong. I want all
of you to know about the secret virtues
of our staff. They don’t just work here.
They follow their passions for animal
welfare. They don’t just clean cages. They
give each animal individualized attention
and affection. They come in early. They
stay late. They willingly come in on their
days off when a fellow team member is
sick. And holidays? While most of the
nation was home opening packages or
celebrating the New Year, Hinsdale Humane Society staff and volunteers were
taking care of our homeless dogs and
cats.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”

generously to our new Giving Tuesday challenge. The giving spirit of so
many made a big difference in the
daily lives of our homeless animals.
For that we send our deepest thanks!
So many wonderful children gave
generously from the heart, donating from: Christmas money,
allowances, supplies and toys, selling crafts and lemonade, a singing
competition, a piano recital, piggy
bank savings, Advent money, running a summer camp, and an art
fair. One teen even donated back
his raffle prize money from our
Petapalooza event!

Perhaps some of you know I grew up on a farm in Iowa. One of the truths on a
farm is this: The cows don’t know that it’s Christmas. So Santa’s packages had
to wait until all the animals were clean and fed. Maybe there would be an extra
morsel of hay or an additional scoop of corn on the farm… and extra treats and
cuddles for the cats and dogs at the shelter, too. Our staff members sacrifice
time with their own families and pets on holidays because they are truly dedicated. It’s not just a job and a paycheck. For the volunteers, it’s not a paycheck
at all… just the satisfaction of knowing they made a difference.
Over the past few weeks, our board members have been shadowing the staff in
order to learn more about shelter operations. A few key learnings: Cleaning
kennels is not glamorous work. It is physically exhausting! Conducting animal
behavior assessments can be challenging. A wagging tail may deliver bruised
shins and puppy teeth might produce a torn pant leg. Discussing a potential
adoption with a new family can be exhilarating or disappointing. Yeah! A cat
was adopted! Or why did that family decide not to get a new pet today?
Linda and Casselyn Feinstein, both of
ReMax Signature Homes, along with
Casselyn’s dogs Boomer & Bailey, recently held a “Yappy Hour” for their
business associates at Wild Ginger in
Hinsdale. The event resulted in donations of $1146 to help our homeless
animals. Thank you so much!

mas. Our
thanks to these generous folks for
thinking of our homeless animals during the busy holiday season.
Our thanks to Madeline LoPresti and
the Alllstate Hands in the Community
Committee, for bestowing a $1000
grant upon HHS in recognition of the
volunteer work Madeline has done for
the animals in both pet therapy and
fostering.
Through it all, we’ve uncovered many secret virtues. Love. Compassion. Kindness. Dedication. Service. Authenticity. Courage. Enthusiasm. Flexibility. Gentleness. Integrity. Patience. Determination. Responsibility. Wisdom. Loyalty. Commitment. Now they’re not such secret virtues. I want all of you to know. Please
spread the word. It’s not gossip when it’s the truth!
Until next time, Lori Halligan, Executive Director

Board Member
Judy Porta
We are sad to say goodbye to long-time
Board member and volunteer, Judy Porta,
who has moved out of the area. Her smile,
enthusiasm and charm are as impressive as
the ideas and drive she brought to her five
years as a board member, including one year
as secretary and three years as president.
In Memoriam...
As a volunteer, Judy worked tirelessly for the
animals in many capacities: receptionist, vet transport, laundry, cleaning, cat
socializing, special events, fostering and pet therapy. We can honestly say dozens of pets have been placed in loving homes because of her dedication to
fostering some of the smallest and most vulnerable animals, particularly, tiny
kittens. They thrived under her constant care along with the menagerie of other cats and dogs in her home (three dogs and seven cats to be exact, with all
but one coming from HHS!). As a life-long animal lover, Judy was very skilled in
helping potential adopters find the “purr-fect” companion to take home.
Judy Baar Topinka
HHS bids farewell to State Comptroller
Judy Baar Topinka who was as passionate about the work of animal shelters,
rescues and care control facilities
throughout the state as she was about
her work in the political arena.
As an advocate for adopting shelter
animals, Topinka launched
“Comptroller’s Critters,” a link on the
State of Illinois Comptroller website,
that features adoptable animals in
statewide shelters. More than 2200
animals have been adopted through the
“Comptroller’s Critters” program since
its inception in 2011. Topinka valued
the human/animal bond that is formed
through pet adoption, and supported
adoption as a way to find homes for
abandoned pets while addressing animal overpopulation and saving animal
control costs in public funded shelters.
For the past two decades, Topinka has
been a generous donor to HHS, and we
remember her not only for her support
and interest in our shelter’s work, but
also her commitment to encouraging
shelter adoption.
Note: Judy Baar Topinka’s Scotties, Jack
and Nora, are both rescues and now
reside with one of her staff members
and her family.
“HHS has been a large part of my life for the last 17 years,” said Porta. “Even
though I have moved out of the state, I will still maintain my friendship and
love for Hinsdale Humane Society.”
In her capacity on the board, Judy challenged members to think to the future
of the organization and motivated all to greater participation and accountability. We wish Judy well in her new endeavors. We’re sure a shelter nearby her
new home will be fortunate to have her as an advocate and volunteer.
Our Thanks
to Laura Donohue
HHS staff and volunteers recently gathered to honor
Laura Donohue, Volunteer Coordinator. After 14 years,
she is moving on to pursue personal goals, hobbies and
continuing education for her nursing career.
Liaison between shelter operations and volunteers,
Donohue managed everything in the program, from
orientation to volunteer training. Her leadership skills,
support and commitment provided positive experiences for HHS volunteers,
currently some 300 individuals. She also implemented the Volgistics computer
program allowing volunteers to schedule and track time from home.
Donohue also worked as a volunteer receptionist, cat socializer and HHS representative at special events. She is a part of the HHS Pet Therapy Program and
volunteers with Edelweiss, a Delta Pet Certified therapy cat and one of her five
felines, all HHS alums.
With a smile, positive outlook and enthusiasm, Donohue has touched many:
HHS staff, hundreds of volunteers, numerous hospital patients and nursing
home residents through the Pet Therapy program, many community members
and countless shelter animals.
"Laura is truly a kind, caring and giving person,” said Lori Halligan, Executive
Director, HHS. “Her passion for the HHS mission and her compassion shown to
all the animals will be greatly missed."

Pennies for Paws 2015 Spare Change Drive
The “Pennies for Paws” spare change drive returns in 2015,
illustrating to students in local schools, that every penny counts.
HHS works together with area schools to raise awareness of
homeless pets by presenting animal-related lesson plans and
classroom talks. These are available to schools and teachers at
no cost. As part of this program, classrooms, students,
children’s clubs or groups are invited to collect spare change
that goes directly to the homeless animals of HHS.
Participating classrooms can win great prizes, and know that
they’ve made a difference in the lives of homeless animals.
To get your classroom, club or group involved in this year’s
spare change drive, call Kym Iffert at 630-323-5630 x33 or
email her at [email protected]. For more
detailed event information, visit our website under News &
Events.

generated.
News from Pet Therapy
We are thrilled to announce that our Pet Therapy department has reached an agreement with
Adventist Midwest Healthcare to begin making inpatient visits with canine CARe teams at Hinsdale
Hospital in the first quarter. Possible expansion to LaGrange Hospital is on the radar as well.
Pet a Pet Team Marianne Bero and Ginger participated in a pilot visit at Eve Assisted Living in
Hinsdale. A monthly visit has now been added to the Eve calendar in 2015 and there is hope for
expansion to additional venues. We are delighted to share this wonderful program more frequently with residents at participating senior/assisted living facilities.
This past year, our Pet Partner teams have expanded their work offering services to local teens
during finals week – most recently at Hinsdale and Downers Grove Public libraries, as well as local
high schools. It’s amazing how a furry face can relieve stress associated with studying for exams!
Calling all Pet Therapy candidates. We’re on the lookout for more pet therapy teams! Please contact Kym Iffert at 630-323-5630 x33 or [email protected] for more information regarding training and testing to become a part of the program.
Spay Day 2015
Celebrate annual World Spay Day!

offer vouchers good for FREE spay/
neuter surgeries at participating
veterinary clinics, to low-income
families (proof of government assistance required). Vouchers
are available on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Join us as we work with generous veterinary clinics
to put an end to pet overpopulation.

HHS is proud to be a part of
The Human Race, Saturday,
April 25, 9am at The Esplanade, 1901 W. Butterfield Rd
in Downers Grove. This 5K run and 2 mile walk brings people together in support of over 50 charity organizations
serving DuPage County. Walkers and runners designate a
charity to receive the donation from the race fee, or from
additional funds raised for their favorite cause. Visit
dupagehumanrace.org for more information and be sure
to designate Hinsdale Humane Society as the charitable
recipient.
Junior Board Community Outreach Events
Members of the HHS Junior Board have been busy brainstorming, planning and
running events to reach out into the community and raise awareness about animal
welfare.
On Saturday, November 22, they held a Tag Day event at Pet Supplies Plus in Downers Grove where they collected donations from customers, raising over $100 in
cash and more than $600 in pet supplies for the shelter. Members of the Junior
Board also came out during the holidays to go caroling at The Birches Assisted Living. As they spread the word about HHS, they also spread some holiday cheer to a
very receptive audience during the two hours they spent there.
This relatively new group of young volunteers has already organized their own
events from Petapalooza to a Dog Wash, as well as provided much-needed help
with Pet Walk and the Kitten Shower. “We anticipate many more great things from
this youth-led volunteer committee,” said Kym Iffert, HHS Humane Educator and
Obedience Instructor.

HHS Volunteers: A Unique Breed… continued from page 3
Each of our volunteers has a deep love for animals at the heart of it all. They give of their
time and talents selflessly to ensure HHS homeless pets
receive every possible opportunity and advantage on their
journey to a new home. In fact in 2014 our volunteers gave
over 8500 hours to the organization. That’s the equivalent
of 4 1/4 full time staff members.
Ambassadors’ Christie Cuthbert

Lucht (Chair).
HHS volunteers are actually saving lives with the work they
do. A recent case of transfer dog Jena is a prime example.
She came to us pregnant, and with the help of a foster
Jena and her seven puppies.
family, gave birth to 7 healthy puppies. Eight lives were
saved in this case. Trevor the puppy came to HHS with an
injury to his leg. With amputation the only option, our receptionist,
Kathy Daly, nursed him back to health in her home, and is now his
proud adoptive mother. Neither of these cases would have been possible without volunteer foster homes, and all of the generous donors
who pitched in for medical expenses to save these precious lives.
Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.

HHS also benefits from the specialized services of volunteers who
donate their time as landscape designers, electricians, handymen,
trainers, human resource professionals and photographers. In fact
our cover photo resulted from the work of cause-driven photographer, Ramon Nayar, who featured a number of our homeless pets in
a photo shoot and resulting social media campaign.
There seems to be no end to the generosity, kindness and caring
exhibited by our wide variety of talented volunteers. With sincerest
gratitude, we thank the wonderful individuals who have made such
a difference in, and impact on, the lives of homeless animals.

Ask The Trainer
HHS Humane Educator, Kym Iffert answers pet
related questions and offers practical advice.
Q. My dog is usually great at home, but lately he’s started chewing on things
that he never did before, digging at my carpet, barking for no reason and is
just driving our family crazy! What can we do to get our easy-going dog back?
A. Behavior studies show that dogs are thinking, feeling, and intelligent beings
with the ability to infer meaning and make decisions. Winter can be especially
tough on them. While some really enjoy the cold weather, the past few winters
have been brutal and unsafe for our pets to spend any amount of time playing
or going for walks outdoors. Bored, under-exercised dogs often turn to natural
dog behaviors (barking, digging, chewing, etc.) to keep themselves mentally
stimulated. Yes, dogs need mental exercise as well as physical!
Thankfully, those same studies have helped develop amazing toys and puzzles to
keep our dogs active – even when they can’t go out for that run. Rather than
giving your dog his meals in a food bowl, why not mix it up and feed him from a
toy instead? This gives you the benefit of slowing digestion while exercising
Fido’s brain as they can be given in a crate. To find the right toy, look for one
that can withstand your dog’s chewing habits. Appropriate size is crucial – your
dog should not be able to get the entire toy in his mouth. Also take into consideration; 1) how much food it will hold (at least half of your dog’s meal portion so
he stays engaged for a longer period of time), 2) what it is made of (hard plastic
is very loud when bouncing around on wood or tile floors), and 3) if it’s something your dog can play with even without the food inside. Kong toys have been
around for a while, and they aren’t just for peanut butter. Consider filling one
with instant mashed potatoes, shredded cheese and your dog’s regular kibble
(the Kong website has an entire page dedicated to healthy recipes). For a longer
lasting Kong, put it in the freezer overnight. For more mental work, try a puzzle
toy or one that your dog has to move in a variety of positions to disengage the
kibble. There are hundreds of great options and having a few different ones can
help keep your pup from figuring one out too quickly.
However, toys can be expensive so there are plenty of ways you can use what
you have at home to help get you through without the stress of cabin (or dog
house) fever. A few easy, mind-stimulating games you can play with your dog:
Hide and Seek—even the kids can get in on this one; one person has the
dog “sit” while the other runs and hides with a treat. Once hidden, call the
dog and reward him when he finds you.
Find It—with his favorite toy/bone.
Cups—place a few opaque plastic cups up-side-down with treats/kibble
underneath some while others have none…can your dog sniff out the correct cups?
Tennis Ball Bingo—fill random cups of an old muffin tin with kibble, then
put tennis balls on top. See if your dog can find food under the balls.
Use your imagination and remember, a tired dog is a good dog, and you can give
your dog plenty of mental exercise without risking the subzero temperatures,
keeping everyone happy, healthy and safe until spring arrives.

We are thrilled to welcome Jorie
Parwani as our Director of
Development, a new role at
HHS, dedicated to fundraising,
and nurturing existing relationships, as well as fostering new
ones.
Jorie’s background is almost
exclusively in fundraising, working most recently with Northwestern Memorial Foundation
and Freedom Golf Association.
With an extensive volunteer
background in a variety of philanthropic organizations, Jorie is currently the Co-Chair of Outreach for the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club, as well as a Board
member of the Union Church Early Childhood Program.
She brings fundraising expertise to HHS that will help us reach
more individuals with our mission, and ultimately, save more
precious lives. Welcome Jorie!
Did you know you can double your donation to HHS through corporate matching? Companies that offer matching gift programs
typically double or triple the amount given by employees. So a
$100 gift becomes a $200-$300 donation! Imagine how many
more pets could be helped this year by taking advantage of this
program.
We hope you’ll take a moment to ask your employer about
matching gifts. If they offer the program, utilizing it is as simple
as filling out your company’s paperwork and submitting it to the
shelter along with your personal donation.
Following are companies who provided matching gifts to HHS in
2014: Allstate, CNA Foundation, Crown Family Philanthropies,
Home Depot, Illinois Tool Works, Ingredion, Insurance Services
Office, Inc. Marmon Group, McDonald’s Corporation, McMasterCarr Supply Co., Mead Johnson Nutrition, Microsoft Giving Campaign, Retirement Research Foundation, Tandem HR, Inc., Wm.
Wrigley Jr. Co. Foundation and U.S. Cellular.
Many thanks to these generous companies! And to those individuals who have donated to HHS. Their kindess has made a big
difference in the lives of the dogs, cat, puppies and kittens in
need of forever homes. We say a heartfelt thank you!

Kitten Rescue 101
It took a community of individuals to rescue a tiny, tabby kitten named May. HHS
volunteer, Emily Alsip recalls hearing the cries of a kitten in distress while walking
across the parking lot of Prospect Elementary School in Clarendon Hills where she
teaches. She tracked the cries to a car, notified the car’s owner, and together they
opened the hood of her car. They were shocked to find a tiny, frightened tabby
kitten in the engine compartment. For more than 30 minutes various teachers and
custodians attempted to help the kitten who kept moving out of their reach. Alsip
eventually crawled under the car, where she was able to reach the kitten and remove her from the engine. The kitten’s paws were burned from the engine heat.
She had survived a 15 mile car ride on the highway stuck in an engine compartment. (Although the car's owner heard sounds
throughout her commute, she was not able to identify them).
Since the kitten needed immediate medical attention, Alsip took her to Hinsdale Animal Hospital. May (named by Alsip) received fluids and antibiotics, but was too young at only 4 weeks old, and too small at less than 2 pounds, for pain medication. The kitten remained at the hospital for the day which gave Alsip time to contact Jenny Vlazny, HHS Shelter Operations Manager, for assistance. May was accepted into the HHS foster care program, and Vlazny arranged for a foster family to care for her as she recuperated
and became old enough to return to HHS for adoption. Meanwhile, one of the teachers initiated a fundraising effort among school
personnel for May's vet treatment. By the end of the day, $250 was raised to cover vet expenses and May's future spay surgery.
After about a month of foster care, May returned to HHS and was adopted by a loving family.
We’d love to hear from you! If you have a favorite photo or pet story, we would love to include it in our quarterly newsletter. Send
it to: [email protected]
