The Granite Belt is a premium food and wine destination
surrounded by stunning national parks and prehistoric granite
formations. Located on the Queensland and New South Wales
border, it’s only a 3 hour drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast
or a 30-minute flight.
LIFE BY THE SEASONS
Sitting high on the Great Dividing Range, more than 1000m
above sea level, creates a region of four seasons and a climate
a world away from Queensland counterparts. It can even snow.
The seasons guide life in the Granite Belt and the produce it
reaps.
SMALL BUT DIVERSE
Stretching just 60kms from north to south and roughly half as
wide, the Granite Belt is small but diverse. Dotted along the New
England Highway are our villages and hamlets, with Stanthorpe,
the main central town. Through the region, country lanes wind
through vineyards, orchards and the namesake granite boulders
which dot the landscape like crazy marbles. If it’s a tranquil
escape from reality, a gourmand’s indulgence or an adrenaline
charged adventure you’re in need of the Granite Belt has something to offer you. Stay for the weekend or longer and experience
elevated taste, culture and nature.
MUST DOS!
1. Just breathe - mountain air and breathtaking views.
2. Visit more than 40 cellar doors and find a Strange Bird on the
alternative wine trail.
3. Grab a wicker basket and source local produce bursting with
flavour. Every second Sunday be spoilt for choice at the Markets
in the Mountains.
4. Expand your mind– discover your creative prowess with an art
class or learn how to make wine.
5. Pack your bike and cycle through forest and winding country
lanes.
4
6. Be elevated literally climbing Girraween National Park.
be elevated
It is beautiful country; rugged and diverse, dotted with
precariously balancing prehistoric granite boulders, fertile soil,
big sky panoramas, meandering creeks, gourmet produce and
award winning boutique wineries.
GOLDEN GROVE ESTATE
7. Attend one of our many events and be entranced by
sultry jazz or the strings of the cello while overlooking the vines.
8. Go on a yoga and wellbeing retreat and rejuvenate your mind,
body and soul. Or spoil yourself with a massage or a beauty
indulgence. You’ll emerge a different person!
9. Need more therapy – what about the retail kind? Source out a
unique giftor buy a hand-made textile to cuddle up with.
10. Foodies, savour slow cooked regional produce from decadent
wild mushroom and truffle soup, melt in your mouth tantalising
pork, or discover the call of the wild with succulent game-meat,
and finish it off with a homemade hot chocolate.
5
ST JUDES SIRROMET
The Granite Belt, an internationally recognised Geographical
Indication (GI), combines much-sought after granite terroir, cool
climate and high altitude to create national and international
award winning wines.
40 CELLAR DOORS
Many people start at our wineries, with more than 55 vineyards
and 40 boutique cellar doors - meet the local winemakers that are
carving out an impressive reputation for the region. The Granite
Belt is a versatile growing region due to varying elevation ranging
from 700m to more than 1200m above sea level - creating some
of the highest altitude vines in Australia. Main wine styles include
Chardonnay, Verdelho, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
STRANGE BIRD ALTERNATIVE WINE TRAIL
Strange Bird is the quirky name given to the Granite Belt’s self
drive alternative wine trail. In recent years the region has proved
a successful producer of more than 20 alternative varieties.
Follow the Trail to discover a sense of adventure and educate your
palate. Dip into a bottle of Viognier or Mourvedre; learn how to
pronounce Gewurztraminer or discuss the perfect food match
for a bottle of Tempranillo. Tagged the ‘next generation of wine’,
alternative varieties have been loved in Europe for generations,
and are rapidly emerging in popularity in Australia because of their
ability to match perfectly with food. Download the map online or
pick up a copy from the Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre.
WINE EXPERIENCES + EDUCATION
Some wineries offer private tasting rooms for groups, winery
and vineyard tours, and wine masterclasses see our website. Want to get really serious do a wine weekend at the Queensland
College of Wine Tourism (QCWT). QCWT is
the region’s dedication to continuous
improvement.

top wine tips
MW ANDREW CORRIGAN
Even if you are a beginner don’t underestimate
your ability to judge a wine! A good wine will have a
bright colour, a readily detectable pleasant aroma,
and a pleasant taste.
1.The better the wine the longer the taste will linger
on after you swallow it.
2. Whites should be pale straw in colour - not dark
brown unless fortified. Reds shouldbe crimson.
3. Whilst there are high quality sweet wines, most
quality wines are dry, especially reds.
4. When selecting a wine to match with food
remember that lighter flavoured wines match
lighter flavoured food.
8
5. Reds are best served at about 18 degrees. Avoid
over-chilling whites - 30 minutes in an ice bucket
will suffice. When serving use decent glasses
which are tulip shape and clear. They are not necessarily expensive, a standard judging glass is
about $3. And, remember to only half fill
the glass to allow the aroma space!

STANTHORPE POTTERY
The Granite Belt supports a burgeoning arts community, with
regular exhibitions and performances by local artists. The region
is rich in history and culture, with a predominant European
influence. Many draw their inspiration from the Granite Belt’s
diverse landscapes.
Talented musicians also call the Granite Belt home - including
renowned Australian artist James Blundell. From sultry jazz,
the cool sounds of blues to country ballads; music vibrates
through the mountains.
A GALLERY WITH MORE THAN 900 PIECES
The Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery (SRAG) offers international,
Australian and local art exhibitions. It is home to a permanent
collection of almost 900 pieces and hosts exhibitions of paintings,
ceramics, sculpture, and fibre/textile artworks. This strong
collection of noted artists’ work is sourced from acquisitions made
during the biennial Stanthorpe Art Festival, the largest regional art
prize in Australia. A program of exhibitions from the wider local
arts community plays an integral part of the gallery’s professional
development program and exposure of the regional creative
endeavours to the visiting public.
TALENTED LOCAL ARTISTS
Local art works are also on display at our fabulous private galleries
and wineries, or at events including the annual Art in the Mill and
Art on Amiens. Some artists have galleries at their residences.

The history of the Granite Belt can be experienced by
following the Heritage Trail and visiting the Stanthorpe
Museum. Historical landmarks of interest include the
Wallangarra Railway Station, the panoramic views of Soldiers’
Memorial that was built to mark the end of the Boer War, and
the beauty of Red Bridge. The region also has some
impressive historic buildings including El Arish (Place of Rest)
built as a summer house for Major Chauvel, the Federation
Post Office, to the Masel Residence - one of Queensland’s
first examples of International Modern architecture.

HISTORY + HERITAGE
A SACRED HUNTING GROUND
Stories tell us that the Kambu Wal Aboriginal tribe used the
Granite Belt as their sacred summer hunting ground for
thousands of years.
FIRST SETTLERS CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN + DISCOVER TIN
In 1827, Cunningham ventured through the pass to discover our
land. Pastoralists arrived in the 1840s. Known as Quart Pot Creek,
the Crown Land Act led to an influx of settlers. A mining rush - the
largest alluvial tin and mineral field in Queensland - in the 1870s
gave Stanthorpe its name: stannum is Latin for tin and thorp is
English for village. It brought people from many countries.
MINERS TURN TO FRUIT + A PLACE TO GROW HEALTHY
The fruit and vegetable industry for which the region is famous
was born after tin prices fell. Grapes were also planted with
encouragement from Italian Catholic priest Father Davadi. The
railway (1881) and acclaimed mountain health benefits brought
increased prosperity.
WAR INFLUENCE
Following WWI, soldier settlements were named after French
battlefields sprang up such as Pozieres and Amiens. After World
War II, Italian POWs/migrants arrived and developed vineyards.

GIRRAWEEN NATIONAL PARK
The Granite Belt owes its name to a very literal belt of igneous
granite rock that runs through the region. Once the site of active
underground volcanos, millions of years and the elements
have left a remarkable ancient landscape of hardened molten
magma granite outcrops that protrude from the hillside like
massive globules or look like crazy marbles dropped from a high.
They stand guard over the bush with its abundant wildlife,
beautiful flora, twisting creeks and rivers. It defies description
but demands exploration. The Granite Belt region is blessed with
two national parks - Girraween and Sundown, and another four
are within an hour’s drive; Bald Rock, Boonoo Boonoo, Basket
Swamp, and Main Range (Queen Mary Falls).
PRECARIOUSLY BALANCING BOULDERS + 360o VIEWS
Scale the prehistoric granites, formed about 250 million years
ago from magma at Girraween National Park. The granite
creates spectacular precariously balancing boulders, clear streams
and tumbling cascades. Nearly 20kms of defined walking tracks,
ranging from 20 minutes to six hour hikes, that wind their way
throughout the park and lead to impressive features including
The Pyramid, The Sphinx, Turtle Rock, Castle Rock, Dr Robert’s
Waterhole and Mt Norman. The area is also home to iconic
Australian animals including platypus, echidnas, kangaroos,
koalas and even wombats, and 700 or so plant species.
BRILLIANT RED GORGES + 4WDRIVING ADVENTURES
The great untamed Sundown National Park offers excellent
4wdriving from sedate tracks to those that will test even the most
experienced driver. On foot you can explore the impressive Red
Rock Falls, Mt Lofty, and Red Rock Gorge. The Severn River and its
tributaries, and remains of pastoral and mining heritage can be
discovered via maintained walking tracks, challenging remote
walks or the 4wdriving track. More than 150 species of birds have
been recorded in the park, making it the perfect location for
bird-watching enthusiasts.

ULTIMATE CONFERENCE, EVENT + GROUP DESTINATION
Our stunning backdrop and fresh mountain air will inspire you and
your attendees. Imagine an event in a vineyard; a national park
or maybe a fruit shed! Before or during your conference play a
game of team golf, take a rejuvenating yoga session, learn the art
of wine blending, expand your creative prowess with an art class,
pick your own fruit, climb Girraween National Park, get a VIP tent
at one of our many events, or enjoy an amazing gourmet picnic
amongst vines. Experiences like this make memorable moments!
ROMANCE AMID THE VINES
Who could say no to romance amid the vines or a proposal flying
high above the mountains? But the proposal that every girl dreams
of is just the first step in the Granite Belt wedding artistry.
Get married away from the maddening crowds. This is not a region
of large, mass venues - the Granite Belt offers unique, visually
captivating and intimate options perfect for your special day. Our
gardens are simply perfect for spring and summer weddings, with
roses and lavender in bloom, or what about a more natural setting
in one of our many forests or national parks. Perhaps you’d love
to wed beside a sparkling lake, a tumbling waterfall, overlooking
a vineyard, in a rustic country shed or amongst the barrels at a
winery. But for traditionalists, we have more than a number of
QCWT
churches
and chapels dotted across the region.
Our food will be superb as local chefs work their magic with fresh
seasonal produce, creating sensational lunch, cocktail or dinner
menus matched to our celebrated regional wines.
The Granite Belt also presents enchanting and quirky photo
opportunties with dozens of superb locations to capture your
special day.

TOURS, TRANSPORT + TRAILS
GETTING HERE
The Granite Belt and its central town, Stanthorpe, are easily
accessible and only a short 2.5-3 hour drive from Brisbane or the
Gold Coast.
Similarly accessible for travellers from northern New South Wales Stanthorpe is approximately 3 hours drive north of Armidale
on the New England Highway. At the southern end of the Granite
Belt region rests the town of Wallangarra, located on the
Queensland/New South Wales border.
SELF DRIVE
If you want to plan your drive to the Granite Belt, you can use
a number of online travel planning services, or visit RACQ. If
you have time take the scenic routes to the Granite Belt - see

If you are travelling from the southern states take ‘Australia’s
Country Way’, the New England Highway (A3).

CLIMATE
Soaring altitude creates a
region of four seasons and a
climate a world away from
Queensland counterparts.
Warm in summer, but rarely
exceed 30 degrees; and
breathtakingly chilly in
winter. Yes, it can even snow.
Layer dressing is the key, as
even in winter, from below
zero overnight our sunny
days can warm up to almost
20 degrees. And always bring
a jacket for the evenings.
SPRING - PRIMAVERA
7.8 - 22.3 Celsius
Spring is a beautiful time to
visit as th area is in bloom,
perfect sunny days and cool
nights.
SUMMER 14.6 - 28.8 Celsius
Escape the humidity of the
Queensland’s coastal regions
for stunning summer days.
AUTUMN - VINTAGE
8.8 - 21.9 Celsius
Fall in love with autumn
and its rich colours, as the
deciduous landscape turns
golden. Most of our rainfall
occurs in late spring and early
autumn.
WINTER - BRASS MONKEY
1.8 - 17.2 Celsius
Winter is colloquially our
Brass Monkey Season; frosty
mornings, crisp clear days.
