Mission
Empowered by Gospel values and rooted in the spirit and tradition of
Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi,
The Catholic High School of Baltimore,
a sponsored institution of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia,
is dedicated to the education of young women in an environment that
fosters Christian attitudes of dignity and respect
for the human person and all of creation.
In our mission, we recognize that through education
the empowerment of women can effect the transformation of our
society; therefore, we challenge our school community
to academic excellence,
to responsible leadership, and
to Christian community service.
Letter from the President
Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends of Catholic High,
Warm greetings from The Catholic High School of Baltimore! As we begin the school
year, I am confident that you will be impressed, as always, with the great news of our
alumnae, students, and recent graduates.
Our Mission Statement boasts of our commitment to challenge our school community
to academic excellence, to responsible leadership, and to Christian community service.
As you read the exciting pages of The Highlighter, you will see that the words of
our mission statement continue to be vibrantly alive at Catholic High and among our
alumnae.
The end of another year brings many highlights to our school community, several of which are
included in this edition: May Crowning, achievements in athletics, news of Catholic High’s
Tuition Guarantee, Commencement on May 22nd at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen and
recognition of the 50th anniversary class, the Class of 1962.
As you read this edition of The Highlighter, you will again notice the many ways our current
students make Catholic High such a vital and dynamic place as well as how the school continues
to touch the lives of our alumnae. It is always a joy to highlight our graduates in the Alumlight
section, regardless of your year of graduation or where you live. We are most fortunate as a
school community that our thousands of alumnae maintain their connection to Catholic High and
continue to offer support in a variety of ways.
May you let your light shine each day in reflection of your years of life and learning at Catholic
High.
Blessings to you and your families.

Alumnae Association Update
Greetings from the Alumnae Relations Office!
As summer comes to an end, we look forward to a wonderful 2012-2013 school year. We have several exciting events added
to the calendar this year. One new event will be a comedy night held on September 15th - Wojo and Mickey: Heaven Help
Us! The evening will be a night of comedy, improv, and “fun” raising, and will feature an alumna, Michele Wojciechowski
’86, and 98 Rock’s Mickey Cucchiella.
In October, we will hold our annual Alumnae Awards Assembly and Inaugrual All Class Reunion (nomination form
included in this newsletter). The awards assembly will be held on October 12 in the Sr. Marie Yocum, OSF Auditorium
with the whole student body and honored guests. On Saturday, October 13, we will hold our Inaugaural All Class Reunion,
all alumnae are weclome to attend as we will honor and recognize the classes that are celebrating milestones. The day will
conclude with the Alumnae Memorial Mass.
Join us for a night of dinner and dancing at our annual fall gala in November. This year’s theme is Hooray for Hollywood,
and it will be held at the Boumi Temple in Rosedale. The spring is a great time here at Catholic High with our annual
Wine Tasting in March and Spring Fling in May. This past year, we also held our Inaugural Golf Outing at Sparrows Point
Country Club, and will hold it once again in June 2013.
Other exciting news from the Alumnae Association is the announcement of a new Executive Board. As we continue to
grow our Alumnae Association, we look forward to inviting more alumnae to become involved with their alma mater. The
Executive Board and sub-committees are working hard to plan events and gatherings for all alumnae to enjoy. If you are
not already signed up to receive the alumnae e-newsletter so you can keep up to date with all the alumnae events, please
email me at [email protected].

2011-2012 Stories from Edison Highway
11th Annual Community Service Day
Catholic High held its 11th annual Community Service Day on Friday,
October 7, 2011. Students, faculty, and staff loaded 13 buses to volunteer at
25 different organizations across the Baltimore area. The day began with a
prayer service and ended with an assembly where the school community
reflected and shared experiences and accomplishments of the day.
“I think Community Service Day broadens the students’ volunteer
experiences,” said Carolyn Marinari, Guidance Counselor and Coordinator of
Community Service Day. “Most students chose to volunteer with populations
they ordinarily would not have sought out so they challenge themselves to
come out of their comfort zone for the betterment of others. This day also
inspired students to consider careers they previously overlooked.”
The Franciscan Center, Gallagher Services & Gribbin Center, and Manna
House have been apart of this day for 11 years, and many others, such
as American Red Cross, Blue Water Baltimore (formerly Herring Run
Watershed Association), Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Hospital, Marian
House, Our Daily Bread, Believe in Tomorrow Children’s House, St. Joseph
Medical Center, and St. Jerome’s Head Start, have worked with Catholic High
for five or more years.
“Organizing this day is a tremendous amount of work, but the biggest payoff is
that our students, working side by side with the faculty, have the opportunity
to put Catholic High’s Mission Statement into action,” Marinari said. “On
Community Service Day, the Mission isn’t just a piece of paper or words. It’s
good deeds done for others in the Franciscan spirit.”

STEM Day
Catholic High’s 2nd annual STEM Day was held on Saturday, October 15th. All female middle school students were
invited to participate. Activities for the day included STOMP Rocket Production, Build & Design a Robotic Arm, and
Build a Solar-Powered Device. The 54 participating students also presented their accomplished projects to their peers,
parents, volunteer helpers, and faculty.
Holding STEM Day offered prospective students a preview of what Catholic High’s STEM Program can offer them.
“Since last year’s STEM Day was such a tremendous success, we were really looking forward to this year,” commented
Ms. Brooke Sterrett, Director of Enrollment. “We tweaked a few of the activities, the participants received fun t-shirts,
and the middle school students left that day enthused about the possibility of being in Catholic High’s STEM Program.”
This year’s 3rd annual STEM Day will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012.
Catholic High is the only school in the Baltimore area with a four-year comprehensive STEM Program that engages
students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program introduces students to stateof-the-art technology and includes many hands-on activities, as well as opportunities to participate in area STEM
competitions. Incoming freshmen participate in Robotics Camp during the summer of their freshman year.
In conjunction with Johns Hopkins University, students can participate in JHU’s Engineering Innovation Program
and earn three original Hopkins credits. STEM students also earn college credit with Anne Arundel Community
College by taking the required Computer Science and Calculus classes.
Fine Arts Workshop
Catholic High introduced a Fine Arts Workshop on Saturday, November 19th to showcase what our Fine and
Creative Arts Department offers students who love to sing, perform, paint, and create! The participating middle
school students interacted with current students who had similar interests, whether it be band, choir, and/or art. In
just one short day, these talented young women put together a concert and art show, to the delight of their families.
This fun-filled day enriched prospective students’ and parents’ understanding of Catholic High’s Fine Arts Program,
and will continue to showcase the many opportunities for students. This year’s Fine Arts Workshop will be held on
Saturday, November 17, 2012.

Student Performances
Steel Magnolias
In her first year at Catholic High, Ms. Jane Schmidt, Choir
Director, pulled together a spectacular performance
of Steel Magnolias in only four weeks and with just 18
rehearsals. “It was an incredible amount of pressure to
pull off a show of any kind in 18 days,” said Ms. Schmidt.
“I had lots of support from fellow faculty members.
Without them, the show never would have happened.”
“I thought the show went great,” said Hailey Ibberson ’15.
“I know we were all really nervous, but I was so proud of
the entire cast and crew. I loved being in my first TCHS
performance and cannot wait for the next one.”
The cast included Londun Dingle ’15 as Truvy, Emma
Dohmeier ’12 as M’Lynn, Hailey Ibberson ’15 as Annelle,
Shelby Kestler ’12 as Ouiser, Kristen Kreiner ’12 as Clairee,
and Gionna Maria ’15 as Shelby.
Hairy Tale Rock
Just months after her first TCHS drama, Ms. Schmidt directed yet another wonderful performance. This time, a
musical - Hairy Tale Rock by Charlie Levett, with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur.
Hairy Tale Rock was a fun, modern twist on the classic fairy
tale, Rapunzel, and left the audience laughing out loud at the
humorous dialogue and witty charisma of the cast.
The cast included Samantha Bailey ’12 as Rapunzel, Abigail
Dohmeier ’14 as Elton, Amanda Broowy ’12 as Bill, Emma
Dohmeier ’12 as Ernestine, Kathleen Koluch ’12 as Princess
Iphigenia, Samantha Santana ’12 as Prince Rupert, Rachel
O’Hale ’13 as Fairy Godmother, Amanda Davis ’15 as Big Bad
Wolf, Stacey Coles ’13 as Evil Witch, Tynisha Johnson ’14 as
Evil Queen, Jennifer Klapka ’14 as King Edwin, and Casey
Kopasek ’15 as Queen Edwina.
This year’s musical will be held on Friday, November 30th and Saturday, December 1, 2012. This year’s drama will
be held on Friday, March 22th and Saturday, March 23, 2013. All performances will be held in the Sr. Francis Marie
Yocum, OSF Auditorium.

Brittany Winborne ’12 Signs with UAB
On Tuesday, November 15th, senior Brittany Winborne officially
signed her letter of intent papers to play Division I women’s basketball
for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her fellow teammates
attended her signing, which was held in the DeCarlo Gymnasium, to
show their support and encouragement.
Shortly after her recruitment, on Monday, January 30th, Brittany
scored her 1,000th point against Friends. She ended her Catholic High
basketball career with the most points scored in the school’s history 1,067. Brittany joined only 2 other alumnae who have scored over 1,000
career points in basketball for Catholic High.
Mary Cay Hamilton ’85 (pictured to the right with Brittany), who was
the first ever to break 1,000 career points with 1,004, attended the game
with her family to support, congratulate, and welcome Brittany to the
esteemed 1,000+ club!
Tracey Hellman ’90 also broke the 1,000 point mark with 1,054 career
points.
Shelby Kestler ’12 Shines in Forensics Finals
Congratulations to Shelby Kestler for making it to the quarter finals at the National
Catholic Forensics League Finals that were held at the Hilton in Downtown
Baltimore on May 26th and 27th. Shelby ranked 18th out of 250 competitors in
Original Oratory.
Over 2,100 students from all over the nation competed in ten different events at
the finals. The competitors were housed at Towson University, Loyola Blakefield,
Baltimore City College High School, Poly High School, and Catonsville High
School.
“I knew that I had someone special when Shelby began doing Forensics as a
freshman,” said Mr. Howard Scott, Forensics Coach. “I am so proud to see her
progress into such a poised and accomplished speaker. She has let her light shine
brightly for Catholic High.”
“Shelby is a young woman of great talent, confidence, and poise,” said Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod ’68, President. “She
has exemplified Catholic High’s missions to empower young women by their education. This accomplishment brings
great honor to her family and school.”
“It was a humbling experience to rank as high as I did at nationals,” said Shelby Kestler ’12. “Seeing that I had made it
to the quarter finals was very surprising, and I will never forget hearing other students from all over the U.S. clap for
me when it was my turn to receive my trophy.”
Shelby is now majoring in political science at Catholic University.

Ellie Gonzalez Competes Internationally
Elizabeth “Ellie” Gonzalez ’14 has certainly made a name for herself as an athlete
with Catholic High, the IAAM, and now, internationally. She was one of 14 girls and
14 boys who were selected to form the U.S. contingent that competed in the National
Scholastic Sports Foundation, Inc.’s (NSSF) Caribbean Scholastic Invitational (CSI)
in Carolina, Puerto Rico on June 1-2.
This was the 7th CSI, which was created to expose young American high school
athletes to international competition. The team selection is based on many factors,
the most important factor being the athlete’s potential to represent his/her country
in the near future. The team competed against other Island countries. The athletes
chosen for the U.S. contingent also competed at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals
in Greensboro, NC on June 12-14.
“When I received the phone call about Ellie’s invitation to the NSSF’s CSI, I was
immediately proud and excited,” said Mrs. Kari McBride, Athletic Director. “As I
shared the information with her family, I could see the excitement in Ellie, too. Once
she accepted the invitation, I could not have been happier for her. What an amazing
opportunity for her to showcase her talents to the world! We are very lucky to have such a hard-working, dedicated
athlete, and I cannot wait to see how she wows the world.”
“Ellie is a stellar athlete and scholar. I am extremely proud that she is representing The Catholic High School of
Baltimore in an international arena as an elite runner,” said Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod ’68, President.
The NSSF was founded in 1990 and strives to support the development of junior age high school athletes by providing
travel grants to eligible high school athletes for major U.S. invitational meets, USATF Junior championships (crosscountry and track and field) and to the three national meets hosted by the Foundation each year: The New Balance
Indoor Nationals, the New Balance Nationals, and the Great American Cross-Country Festival.
Catholic High Announces Tuition Guarantee
The Catholic High School of Baltimore proudly announces the implementation of an unprecedented tuition model
that will provide families a consistent tuition fee throughout their daughters’ tenure. In response to the current
economic challenges faced by families today, the Catholic High Board of Trustees recently unanimously approved
a Tuition Guarantee model for current and future students. This model is one of the first of its kind in the country
providing a certainty for families in planning their daughters’ annual tuition without the expectations of rising cost.
The program goes into effect this school year for all students.
“Although families have come to expect annual tuition fluctuations from private educational institutions, we are
sensitive to the fact that household budgets are being designed around the current economic climate,” said Catholic
High President Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod. “We analyzed our present and future resources and felt confident in creating
this unique offer to demonstrate our compassion for the investment that families are making toward their daughters’
educational future.”

Miss Catholic High &
May Crowning
As is tradition, Catholic High held its annual Miss Catholic High Assembly on April 30, 2012 during which the
Students of the Year and Miss Catholic High were announced.
Miss Catholic High exhibits academic excellence, responsible leadership, and Christian community service
consistently over her four years at Catholic High. Each month during the school year, a Student of the Month
is chosen from each class. This person demonstrates exemplary leadership qualities and actively takes part in
school events. All Students of the Month are eligible for Students of the Year, and senior Students of the Month
are eligible to become Miss Catholic High.
“When so many capable young women are candidates for their classes, it makes the choices difficult for the
selection committees. This is very good because it proves just how wonderful our students are,” said Ms. Pat
Greely, English Department Chair and part of the selection committee.
Miss Catholic High, 2012 is Emma Dohmeier; Junior of the Year is Megan Lynch; Sophomore of the Year is
Rebecca Miller; and Freshman of the Year is Cassandra Kopasek.
As Miss Catholic High, 2012, Emma Dohmeier had the esteemed honor of crowning the Blessed Virgin Mary
during the annual May Crowning on May 2, 2012 in the Sr. Francis Marie Yocum, OSF Auditorium. The
Students of the Year accompanied Emma on stage and provided support as Emma fulfilled a very meaningful,
religious tradition.
“It was an honor to have been a part of this ceremony to honor Mary, and I’m excited to see who will crown
Mary next year,” said Junior of the Year, Megan Lynch.

The Christmas Project
Dear TCHS Alumnae,
On behalf of the 30 needy families with 87 children, and the 71 low-income seniors who received Christmas gifts
because of you, we would like to thank you. Without your generosity and support, this project would not still be in
existence after 55 plus years!
We also were able to give 160 goody bags to nursing home residents, 10 goody bags to retired Franciscan sisters
(several who taught at Catholic High), school supplies to some students who could not afford to buy them at the
beginning of the school year, a pair of tennis shoes to a little boy who could not take gym because he did not have the
right kind of shoes, and clothes, toys, and school supplies to a family who lost everything in a house fire.
The principal of the Title 1 school where we donate the toys, clothes, and food certificates, summed it up well in his
thank you letter. He wrote: “You provided Christmas to families who would otherwise have had very little. When the
parents came to pick up their gifts, they were very grateful; some moved to tears. I can only imagine the looks on the
children’s faces on Christmas morning! Thank you for making another Christmas merry and bright!”
We were able to acquire some new members to our ALUMNAE CHRISTMAS PROJECT this year. Ronnie made
many, many calls to try to get additional support for 2011. If you know of anyone who might be interested in
shopping for a gift for a senior or child, donating something new that could be used as a gift, or giving a gift card or
money to help with the expenses, please share the information in this letter with them. If you hear of any alumnae
who need help, let us know and I assure you, the names will be held in confidence.
K-Mart may have had their lay-a-way angels for Christmas 2011, but TCHS has had its own Christmas Project Angels
for much, much longer. We hope to work with you again in 2012!
