In total between this event and the money we raised a few months ago at the bake sale we reached $3,042.00!! This money will be donated to the Catholic Charities of Oklahoma and will go to either building a new home for a family in need or will go to rebuilding a church that was destroyed. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help on Sunday, who donated food and supplies, and to everyone who came out to support this cause. A special thank you goes to Deacon Chris, Mrs. Dodge, Mrs. Dreher, and Father John. These four people helped me every step of the way to make this event happen. They stood by me through all the ups and downs, participated in every way they could, and they worked so hard to make this event happen. I cant thank them enough for all of their hard work and dedication. I am so grateful to be a part of such an active parish. I have met many wonderful parishioners over the past few years and it is so hard for me to say goodbye. I am so grateful that God sent my family to this parish and I will miss this community so much! I will continue to keep you all in my prayers while I am away at school and hope that I have inspired the youth to become more active with their faith! God put us all here for one reason and we should continue to bring people closer together to practice the faith that God gave us. BANNS OF MARRIAGE First Announcement: Allison Marie Lambert Adam Paul Seal Second Announcement: Mercedes Salmeron Robert Hunt Third Announcement: OLQM Selden, NY St. Anthony of Padua United Methodist Jean-Marc O’Brien OLQM Nagila Moreno De Oliveira Paraquia Nossa Senhora Das Dores Inga - Niteroi/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil ~ Our Lady Queen of Martyrs ~ ARE YOU BEING CALLED? In September the Diocese will be inviting us to offer names of people to be trained as Eucharist Ministers and Lectors. A few thoughts to consider about these Ministries... The Ministry of Lector Eucharistic Minister As you listen each Sunday, you hear that we have very fine lectors here at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs. Anyone who is interested in becoming a lector here at the parish are asked to note the following: • First of all this is a ministry – it is not simply a role which a person accepts because he or she might be a good reader. Being a lector is much more than simply reading words from a book. It is proclaiming God’s word from the sacred scriptures!! These words are holy and the lector is called to proclaim them to our faith community. We are all called to hear the real presence of God in these words. • A lector is called to believe the words he or she reads. The lector should strive to understand the message and to reflect on the words that are proclaimed to the parish. • This is a ministry of service, as is that of a Eucharistic Minister. God’s word and His presence in His Body and Blood we administer bring with them significant responsibility. Service calls us to ministry, not always at our convenience but to be of service to the community as needed. As you see at each Mass, we have a number of Eucharistic Ministers who help distribute the Body and Blood of Jesus. We also have Eucharistic Ministers who visit parishioners who are ill or homebound, bringing them Holy Communion. • Eucharistic Ministers help distribute the Body and Blood of Jesus to our faith community. We are called in this ministry to offer the Body and Blood of Jesus to one another. As the minister holds the Body of Christ or the cup with His precious Blood, we are called to see Christ, His real presence, before us. We are also to see Christ in the person who comes to us for communion, and most especially we are to reflect Christ for others to find Him in us as we share communion. We become unite by the Body and Blood of Christ. Hence the reason we receive both His Body and His Blood. • We prepare for this ministry by prayer and reflection. Serving as a Eucharistic Minister is not giving something to others, but rather, sharing someone, Jesus, with one another. Reverence and deep love and respect for the Eucharist, and a firm belief in the Real Presence, is critical to this ministry. Considering either one of these two ministries comes with expectations of commitment and availability. Our faith community is dependent on those who serve to be present at the liturgies for which they are scheduled. We do understand certain considerations and take this into account in preparing the schedules. If you are prayerfully considering serving as a lector or Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, you are invited to write a letter to the Pastor, Father John Gilmartin, stating your desire and interest. Thank you for your willingness to serve. ~ Faith Formation ~ The Diocese of Rockville Center Golden Wedding Liturgy Honoring Couples Married Fifty Years or More Sunday, October 6 -- Church of Saint Rose of Lima in Massapequa Sunday, November 3 -- Church of Christ the King in Commack Both liturgies will begin at 2:30 pm / Couples may register for ONE liturgy. PRIEST SCHEDULE FOR AUGUST 24TH & 25TH Saturday, August 24th Sunday, August 25th 5:00 pm Msgr. Ryan 8:00 am Fr. Dowling 10:00 am Father Mario 12:00 pm Father Mario PRAYER AND WORSHIP Bill Ayres shares his reflections on the scripture readings. Sunday, August 18, 2013 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time A Reading from the Book of the prophet Jeremiah Jeremiah never wanted to be a prophet. He accepted the calling reluctantly but once he said yes to God he did not turn back. He spoke the truth to power and the powers that be did not like it. They tried to kill him but the power of God saved him. It has always been difficult if not dangerous to speak truth to power and it is so today, in so many ways, on so many levels. A Reading from the Letter to the hebrews Every one of us has times of extreme suffering. Sometimes it is physical, sometimes emotional or mental and often it comes from being misunderstood, falsely accused or betrayed. At those times it is most difficult to look past the suffering to a new horizon, new possibilities, perhaps new or deeper relationships. This reading reminds us of the suffering of Jesus. Most of us have thought of the suffering of Jesus on the cross but that is not something we have experienced. How about His suffering of betrayal, being so misunderstood, falsely judged and abandoned by so many He trusted? This reading tells us that Jesus endured all this so that we might not grow weary and lose heart. We can look to Jesus when we are in danger of losing heart and know that He has shared that same pain. Our God is not one who hides in the clouds somewhere but rather lives with us as we journey together. REFLECTIONS ON A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE Who is this Jesus who sounds so violent? Where is the Jesus of peace that Luke talks about throughout his gospel? Jesus is now coming to the end of His short life and He sees the pervasive evil Roman Empire and many of the religious leaders of the time. He knows that His message is divisive, that it will divide families and communities against one another. What a burden that must have been for Him to carry. Have you ever lost a relationship with a friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker because of a message they did not or could not hear? You try to say it in the most loving way possible but it is rejected and you are as well. Know that Jesus was there in His life and is there now with you in your loss. ~ Tweets to transform your life and change the world ~ Creation did not only happen in the beginning. It is happening all the time and you and I are co-creators. Imagine that, we co-create with God. ~ Faith Formation ~ CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION SCRIPTURE BY THE SOUND Sunken Meadow Park Boardwalk We are in tremendous need of teachers on several grade levels, but particularly 1st and 3rd grades.
