Peace, help & dignity 2004 ANNUAL REPORT SHELTERING WINGS CENTER FOR WOMEN mission OUR MISSION Sheltering Wings Center for Women provides emergency housing for women and children suffering from physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. We provide a supportive and nurturing Christ-centered environment, with the goal of reaching emotional and economic stability. OUR VISION Sheltering Wings Center for Women was formed in the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ. The Center will extend the love and compassion of Christ to women and their children in the desperate circumstances of domestic violence. Christ was never coercive or offensive, and neither are the services provided by the Center. Our assistance to any victim of any background will be offered in the name of Christ. OUR BOARD vision OF DIRECTORS (with expiration of term of service) Robert Leonard (2006), CHAIRMAN Retired Senior Vice President, Homedco David Blanford (2005), VICE CHAIRMAN Vice President, The Principal Financial Group S. SHE LEFT HER HOME, ALL OF HER POSSESSIONS – EVERYTHING SHE’S KNOWN IN THIS LIFE – TO STAY IN A PLACE SOMEONE TOLD HER IS SAFE. TEARS FILL HER EYES AS SHE REALIZES THAT SHE DIDN’T EVEN STOP TO GRAB HER DAUGHTER’S PURPLE TOOTHBRUSH. A KIND VOICE TELLS HER NOT TO WORRY, LEADING HER DAUGHTER TO A SHELF WHERE SHE CHOOSES ANOTHER ONE. ONLY HALF HEARING WHAT SHE’S BEING TOLD, SHE VISUALIZES HER HUSBAND’S REACTION TO THE EMPTY HOUSE AND HER SISTER’S SHOCK WHEN SHE LEARNS WHAT HAPPENED. AND WHAT WILL THE NEIGHBORS SAY? TWO MONTHS LATER, SHE PASSES THROUGH THE DOOR AGAIN, TAKING HER DAUGHTER TO A NEW APARTMENT. WHEN ASKED IF DADDY WILL BE JOINING THEM, SHE TRIES TO EXPLAIN. IT’S THE FIRST OF MANY CONVERSATIONS LIKE THAT, BUT NOW SHE CAN OFFER HOPEFUL, CONFIDENT ANSWERS. AS THE DOOR CLOSES, SHE QUIETLY VOICES A PRAYER OF THANKS AND BECOMES THE LATEST OF MANY MIRACLES TO HAPPEN IN A PLACE OF PEACE, OF HELP, AND OF DIGNITY CALLED – A PLACE SHELTERING WINGS. The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace. STAFF MEMBERS WITH SPECIALIZED TRAINING ARE ON HAND 24 HOURS A DAY TO TAKE CALLS FROM WOMEN IN DANGER. STANDARDIZED ASSESSMENTS ARE USED TO GAUGE THE DEGREE OF DANGER TO THE WOMAN AND ANY CHILDREN, SO THAT THE STAFF MEMBER CAN RECOMMEND THE APPROPRIATE COURSE OF ACTION, SUCH AS CONTACTING LAW ENFORCEMENT. UPON ARRIVAL, A MENTOR CONDUCTS A BRIEF ASSESSMENT TO UNDERSTAND THE WOMAN’S IMMEDIATE NEEDS, THEN PROVIDES A TOUR OF THE SHELTER, POINTING OUT THE SAFETY FEATURES SO THAT SHE AND HER CHILDREN FEEL SAFE. 4 FROM OUR Sheltering Wings Center for Women is three years old. Since we opened our doors in 2002, the shelter has received more than 2000 telephone calls from women trying to cope with crisis and seeking either advice and direction or actual protection at Sheltering Wings. As our services have become more well-known within our community, the calls for help have doubled each year. We received more than 1000 of them in 2004 alone. We continue to be blessed by the enormous outpouring of support from all over the county. We remain amazed at your generosity and appreciate each person, each organization, each grantor, and every church that has made the work of protecting women at Sheltering Wings a priority. You are wonderful, indeed. The shelter focuses on achieving cost-effective results. Here are just three of many examples: • We track outcomes. Greater than 70 percent of the women who have left Sheltering Wings have departed to a safer environment than the one from which they made that crisis call, which is higher than the national average. • More than 100 children lived at the Shelter in 2004, equating to 4600 “shelter days” at approximately $9 per day per child. Each child receives a personal assessment, therapy as needed, and age-appropriate group activities designed to facilitate the development of life skills and anger management. • We do not charge our women for any of the services they receive. Safe housing, meals, PEACE, HELP & CHAIRMAN case management services, and direction into community organizations, ancillary services, and opportunities are all provided free of charge because that’s our mission. Our theme for Sheltering Wings in 2005 goes directly to why we exist. We seek to offer abused women an environment of safety where they may gain a measure of peace, to help them move forward in their lives in a way that provides renewed hope and purpose, and to be involved in their lives so that we might help restore their dignity. Peace, help, and dignity are what Sheltering Wings provides and are the reasons we exist. No annual message from the Board would be complete without a most grateful thank-you for the way you have met the financial needs of this work. We are humbled by your generosity. In 2005, we will continue to enrich life skills training, make our children’s program more robust, and expand our outreach to the community so that we may emphasize violence prevention in all available forums. Sadly, the need for our services grows along with our area’s population. We are beginning an intensive strategic planning process to help us find the best way to respond to that growing need while continuing to make prudent use of your generous support. On behalf of the staff, the Board, and the women and children who have had their lives protected and their hope restored, thank you. You have made everything we do possible. ROBERT E. LEONARD DIGNITY ONCE THE INITIAL CRISIS HAS PASSED, THE WOMEN WE SERVE NEED HELP PREPARING FOR THEIR FUTURE, AND FOR DEALING WITH CONFUSION AND UNCERTAINTY ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIPS AND FUTURE STABILITY. OUR CASE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM PROVIDES A STRUCTURED APPROACH FOR ASSESSING AND ADDRESSING EACH WOMAN’S UNIQUE NEEDS AND GOALS, AND MEASURING OUR SUCCESS AT HELPING HER ACHIEVE INDEPENDENCE AND STABILITY. SHELTERING WINGS ASSIGNS EACH WOMAN A CASE MANAGER AND MENTOR WHOSE RESPONSIBILITIES ARE TO GUIDE HER THROUGH A PERSONALIZED PROCESS AND HOLD HER ACCOUNTABLE. WE USE FIELD-ACCEPTED METHODS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR PROGRAMS AND CLOSELY MONITOR EACH RESIDENT’S PROGRESS. 5 FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2004 INCOME Individual/Membership Support Board of Directors Corporate Support Civic Groups Foundation Support* Government Grants United Way Donor Designated Contributions United Way Community Solutions Grant Church Support TOTAL INCOME 109,000 26,000 67,000 32,000 150,000 106,000 98,000 61,000 52,000 701,000 $ $ *$90,000+ OF THIS AMOUNT IS DEFERRED INCOME TO BE USED FOR 2005 EXPENSES EXPENSES Crisis Intervention Mentoring/Life Skills/Case Management Children’s Services Outreach/Education Administrative TOTAL EXPENSE 135,000 161,000 87,000 137,000 55,000 575,000 $ $ INCOME UNITED WAY COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS GRANT 10% CHURCH DONATIONS 7% EXPENSES BOARD OF DIRECTORS 4% UNITED WAY DONOR DESIGNATIONS 14% ADMINISTRATIVE 10% INDIVIDUAL & MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT 16% OUTREACH & EDUCATION 24% CRISIS INTERVENTION 23% CORPORATE SUPPORT 9% CIVIC GROUPS 4% GOVERNMENT GRANTS 15% FOUNDATION SUPPORT 21% CHILDREN’S SERVICES 15% MENTORING, LIFE SKILLS & CASE MANAGEMENT 28% THESE ARE PRELIMINARY, UNAUDITED YEAR-END FIGURES AND MAY DIFFER SLIGHTLY FROM THE FINAL FIGURES WE WILL REPORT TO THE STATE OUR FINANCES ARE REVIEWED ANNUALLY BY AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC ACCOUNTING FIRM. This organization channels and coordinates the support and input of local churches that want to help us show Christ’s love to victims of domestic violence. Each participating church appoints members who serve as liaisons between their congregations and the shelter. They keep members informed about the ways in which God’s hope has worked through Sheltering Wings to change lives, and update them about current needs, volunteer opportunities and fundraisers. They also coordinate help and support from church members. If your church isn’t already participating and you’d like to become involved, please talk with your pastor or call us for more information. We could not do that without the help of hundreds of volunteers who give generously of their time and energy to help us serve women and children. In 2004, volunteers contributed more than 5,000 hours of help to the shelter. Depending on how and where they will serve, all volunteers are required to participate in either four or eight hours of orientation training to familiarize them with our policies and help them better understand the effects of domestic violence upon women and children. We also require volunteers who will work directly with our women and children to undergo drug screening and a background check. What do our volunteers do? Here are just some of the many services they provide: • Providing transportation for women and children to interviews and appointments. • Mentoring women to help them rebuild their lives. • Reading to, walking with, and even just being there for children. • Being a “big brother or sister” to a younger child. • Answering phones and doors. • Assisting with office work and donations. • Helping prepare newsletters for mailing. • Running errands for groceries and supplies. • Keeping our computers running and productive. • Changing light bulbs and other maintenance tasks. • Repairing residents’ cars. • Obtaining and coordinating sponsorships, prizes and donations for events. • Working at our events. THIS IS AN EXTRA SPECIAL SHELTER; IT IS BASED ON GOD’S LOVE AND WORD. I AM GRATEFUL FOR THIS PLACE AND FOR THE CHRISTIAN-BASED WAY IT IS RUN. EACH OF US UNDER THIS ROOF IS BLESSED. EACH PERSON HERE HAS TOUCHED ME IN SPECIAL WAYS. I BELIEVE GOD HAS SOMETHING FOR EACH OF US TO SHARE AND/OR GIVE TO ONE ANOTHER, BE IT A STAFF PERSON OR VISITOR. - FROM ONE OF OUR 2004 SUCCESS STORIES PEACE, HELP & DIGNITY PREVENTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE REQUIRES PUBLIC EDUCATION. WHILE OUR MOST URGENT MISSION IS PROVIDING SAFETY TO VICTIMS, OUR OUTREACH PROGRAMS PROVIDE A VITAL SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE. IN 2004, WE EDUCATED MORE THAN 14,000 INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES, AND ORGANI ZATIONS ABOUT THE IMPACTS AND REALITIES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE THROUGH PROGRAMS AND PRESENTATIONS CREATED SPECIFICALLY TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR AUDIENCES. INSERVICE PRESENTATIONS GIVE LARGE AND SMALL BUSINESSES EFFECTIVE WAYS TO EDUCATE EMPLOYEES ABOUT DOMESTIC ABUSE, BECOME AWARE OF SYMPTOMS OF UNSAFE RELATIONSHIPS, AND LEARN STEPS TO TAKE WHEN ABUSE IS SUSPECTED. 14 HELP US CREATE PEACE , HELP AND DIGNIT Y “SHELTERING WINGS HAS BEEN A MIRACLE IN MY LIFE. THEY HAVE EVERY RESOURCE NEEDED TO CHANGE IT FOR THE BETTER. EVERYONE IS VERY NICE AND UNDERSTANDING. I AM SO HAPPY THAT WE HAVE A PLACE TO COME TO FEEL WELCOME FROM THE DANGER.” Those words, written by a woman who now lives free from fear, provide tremendous satisfaction for all of us at Sheltering Wings. At times when it seems that the need is simply too large, the day is simply too short, and our resources are simply not enough, we remember those words and pray. You and others like you are the answers to those prayers. Your generosity — whether it appears in the form of financial support, donations, your precious time, or a combination — is visible evidence that God truly does work miracles. You help us cover the cost of helping these women and children. We wish Sheltering Wings did not need to exist. After all, a world without domestic violence would mean happier, safer, more productive lives for women, their husbands, and their children. We work hard to educate people about domestic violence because we know that doing so will help us prevent it, and allow us to intervene more quickly when it does. But the need for what we do grows. It isn’t necessarily that the rate of violence itself is on the rise; it’s that the population is growing rapidly, so that the numbers continue to increase. As more people become aware of our work and our success, we see the number of referrals grow. We have been at capacity nearly every day since we opened, and expect to stay that way for the foreseeable future. How will we meet those challenges? We’ll plan and we’ll pray, and we’ll continue to help women and children find peace instead of fear, help rather than isolation, and dignity to replace self-doubt. No matter how great the challenges, your support will continue to be the answer to our prayers and the key to changing lives. PEACE, HELP & DIGNITY A THIRD OF HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS HAVE EXPERIENCED VIOLENCE IN A DATING RELATIONSHIP. MORE CHILLING, 4 IN 5 GIRLS WHO HAVE BEEN ABUSED CONTINUE TO DATE THEIR ABUSERS. OUR TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS PROGRAM MAKES STUDENTS AWARE OF THE REALITIES OF DATING VIOLENCE AND GIVES THEM PRACTICAL, REALISTIC STRATEGIES FOR DEALING WITH SITUATIONS THEY MAY ENCOUNTER, USING SCENARIOS THEY RECOGNIZE FROM THEIR DAILY LIVES. BY REACHING TEENS WITH RELEVANT, PRACTICAL MESSAGES DRAWN FROM THE WORLD THEY SEE, WE CAN BREAK THE CYCLE NOT ONLY FOR THOSE WHO ATTEND, BUT ALSO FOR THEIR FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES. OTHER WAYS TO GIVE As you consider how you can help Sheltering Wings, you may want to explore one of the many planned giving strategies described below. In addition to providing long-term support for the women and children we serve, many of these strategies offer substantial tax benefits to givers. Most attorneys, accountants, financial planners, bankers and others in the community will be happy to show you how to put these strategies to work for you. EMPLOYER MATCHING. Many companies match donations made by their employees, which can double or triple the impact of your generosity. Ask your Human Resources department for information about your employer’s program. STOCK GIFTS. If you own shares of stock that you no longer need, donating them to Sheltering Wings may allow you to take a substantial tax deduction. BEQUESTS. As you prepare your will, please consider designating a set amount or percentage as a bequest to Sheltering Wings. If you already have a will, ask your attorney to add a codicil that reflects your wishes. LIFE ESTATE ARRANGEMENTS. With this type of giving, you can donate your home, land or other property to Sheltering Wings, but continue to use that property for life. INSURANCE GIFTS. If your dependents are financially secure, you may not need all of your life insurance coverage. Designating Sheltering Wings as a beneficiary for part or all of your benefits — or taking out a new policy listing us as beneficiary — may offer tax advantages. ANNUITIES. Purchasing a charitable gift annuity or a lifetime annuity allows you to make a gift now, and receive an income as long as you and your beneficiaries live. CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS. This approach allows you to make a gift to Sheltering Wings and provides you and your spouse with long-term income and an immediate tax deduction. The full amount goes to Sheltering Wings when the trust period ends. CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS. These trusts allow Sheltering Wings to benefit from your gift for a specified period, with the assets then returning to you or your beneficiaries. May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 SHELTERING WINGS IS A 501(C)3 NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, AND DONATIONS ARE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE TO THE EXTENT WE CANNOT PROVIDE ADVICE ON TAX OR LEGAL MATTERS, AND RECOMMEND THAT YOU CONSULT WITH YOUR ATTORNEY, ACCOUNTANT OR OTHER PROFESSIONAL TAX ADVISOR. ALLOWED BY LAW. “I NEVER THOUGHT ANY MAN SHOULD HAVE TOTAL POWER OVER HIS WIFE. TO ME, THAT’S WHERE IT STARTS TO DESTROY A MARRIAGE. ANYONE WHO WANTS TO HAVE TOTAL CONTROL WILL END UP DESTROYING A MARRIAGE. I WANTED A MARRIAGE TO BE HONEST, SELFLESS AND FULL OF FRIENDSHIP. I WAS STARVING FOR ATTENTION. HE WOULD NEVER LISTEN OR TAKE TIME FOR ME. HE WOULD NEVER CONSIDER MY FEELINGS. I NEVER KNEW WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO COME HOME TO MY HUSBAND IN A GOOD MOOD OR TO GO SOMEWHERE FUN WITH OUR THREE KIDS TO HAVE FUN. FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS OF MY MARRIAGE I WAS MORE LONELY AND EVEN SCARED OF HIM. ONE OF THE SCARIEST AND HAPPIEST DAYS OF MY LIFE WAS WHEN I WENT TO SHELTERING WINGS CENTER FOR WOMEN. THE WOMEN IN THE OFFICE AND MY MENTOR MADE ME FEEL SECURE. THEY GAVE ME LOTS OF LOVE AND HUGS. NOW, LOOKING BACK, I REALIZE I GOT DIVORCED FROM AN ABUSIVE, MISERABLE MAN. I’M SO HAPPY WITH MY NEW APARTMENT, AND IT’S EVEN FIXED THE WAY I WANT IT! I HAVE MONEY TO SAVE AND SPEND, TOO. (HE NEVER LET ME SAVE MONEY.) I FEEL GREAT ABOUT MYSELF. THANK YOU, SHELTERING WINGS, FOR GIVING ME A FRESH START TO HAPPINESS, AND THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT. NOW I HAVE SUCH A DESIRE TO HELP OTHERS. I WANT TO SEE MORE WOMEN AND CHILDREN FREE FROM THEIR ABUSIVE PARTNERS. FREE TO ENJOY THEIR LIFE WITH CONFIDENCE. THAT’S WHY SHELTERING WINGS IS A BLESSED PLACE TO ME AND I WANT TO RETURN THE BLESSING BY HELPING OTHER WOMEN AND CHILDREN. I WILL NEVER AGAIN REGRET MY DECISION TO LEAVE.” - FROM ONE OF OUR 2004 SUCCESS STORIES For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
