Is it the color of your eyes? Is it your smile? Of all your traits, what would you give them? At Sheltering Wings, we provide safe haven and we teach skills that help end the cycle of abuse. Because we believe the most important thing future generations can inherit is the love of Christ. To our donors, friends, and families, Someone once observed that children have never been very good at listening to their parents – but they’ve never failed to imitate them. We don’t have the luxury of being selective about what our children inher it from us. Children repea t what they have learned, and all too often, abuse is passed down from one generation to the next through example and exposure. Boys who grow up in an atmosphere of dome stic violence are more likely to become abusers. Girls raised in abusive homes have a highe r tendency of choosing boyfr iends or husbands who abuse them. The violence then spreads to our communities. Teenagers from violent homes may escape by turning to drugs and alcohol.Violent juvenile delinquents are much more likely to come from homes where their fathers battered their moth ers. The cycle continues into adulthood. The vast majority of men in prisons grew up in viole nt homes. While this realization is sober ing, it also provides us with a starting point for change. Sheltering Wings teaches women and children how to make healthy choices. Through counseling, healthy relationship support groups, safety groups, and many other activities, we teach new skills that empower them to break the cycle of abuse. This builds hope for new generations and provides us with an opportunity to share Christ’s love. Your support has already changed the lives of many women and children. By making a difference in their lives today, your gift will be passe d on to future generations. Although their descendants may never know your name, they will be blessed by your charity and your selfless dedication. On behalf of the board of directors and staff at Sheltering Wings, we thank you for your generous spirit. Sincerely, Dan Bond, Chairman P ag e 3 Th e Y e ar in R e vi e w It’s more than a year’s work. It’s an investment in the future. In 2007, we served more women than ever before. We provided more clothing, food, healthcare and other essentials than in any other year in our history. But our work is not about volume. It is about ending the cycle of abuse. Every woman and child who comes to us deserves and receives individual attention. Sometimes that attention takes the form of crisis intervention or basic essential needs. Other times it means job training, budgeting instruction, or computer classes. In all cases, it is simply a safe place to stay. Regardless of the service we provide, the goal is still the same: to empower residents to end the cycle of abuse before it affects a new generation. Woman’s Program The goal of generational change does not mean we are focused solely on the future. Real, lasting change must start today. When we serve women in crisis, we sow the seeds for a healthier tomorrow. In addition to crisis intervention, we also offered over 190 classes throughout the year designed to spark change. From resume writing and budgeting courses to teaching a weekly parenting class, our staff empowers residents with the skills needed to parent in a non-violent, healthy manner. Healthy Relationships class also teaches the ladies how to identify future potentially abusive relationships. In 2007, we continued to be a valuable resource for women who were victims of abuse. 109 ladies called our facility home – some for just a few days, others for much longer. Our master’s-level therapist provided over 645 hours of crisis intervention and ongoing support. She also provided key assistance to 17 former Sheltering Wings guests. Even after women leave Sheltering Wings, we continue to provide support. In 2007, we received 274 follow up contacts with former residents. They were provided with therapy, emotional support, and other needs. In some cases we accompanied them to court, or assisted in furnishing their new homes with donations from the community. But most of all, we assured them they have a caring compassionate place they can turn for support. P ag e 6 The entire spectrum of services we provide can only be effective if the women we receive are free from drugs and other addictions. To that end, we have added to our array of classes. Funding from the Hendricks County Substance Abuse Task Force enabled us to partner with community addictions counselors to provide both on and off-site therapy. Children’s Program The services we provide make a difference today and tomorrow. Our staff works to address immediate needs, knowing that the new skills they teach will pay dividends in the future. Our children’s program is constantly evolving and improving. The children’s coordinator and program committee evaluate our programs on an ongoing basis to ensure the children are learning the most helpful skills in an effective manner. 2007 saw the addition of a part-time children’s mentor. She lovingly and compassionately conducts evening groups for our children. She teaches them about safety, healthy relationships, coping with separation, and ways to identify abusive relationships. In 2007, children at Sheltering Wings were given the opportunity to attend 94 groups. With additional funding, we will be able to hire additional children’s staff in order to provide even more life-changing services We received 274 follow up contacts with former residents. P ag e 7 S T A FF / V O L U N TEE R U P D A TE We work with today’s mothers and children. We work for tomorrow’s. Our Staff When a woman in crisis calls at 2 a.m., a member of our staff is there to answer. When a frightened mother with nowhere else to turn walks through our door, a member of our staff is there to help. At countless civic events, outreach programs, and quiet one-on-one conversations, our staff acts as the hands and feet of Jesus to create change in this generation and in generations to come. Their genuine concern is made stronger by their training. Every member of our staff receives ongoing instruction in how to best serve our families. They act with love and compassion to help women and children. Sometimes that means providing a specific type of care. Other times it is simply being there with a kind word, a smile, or hug. Our Volunteers We rely on generous donations to help spark generational change – and we depend on volunteers to implement it. God has continued to bless Sheltering Wings with dedicated individuals who donate their time and talents. Our volunteers donated thousands of hours in 2007 in all areas of our mission: P ag e 8 Administration and Maintenance – Telephones were answered, guests and donors were greeted, mailings were done, and still others helped with special projects. In 2007, there were 812 volunteer hours devoted to this area. Volunteers also helped move furniture, change light bulbs, paint rooms, weed our yard, trim shrubs, and paint our fence. Women’s Programs – Several ladies mentored our residents, and they provided essential transportation for them. In 2007, 1168 hours were devoted to our women’s program. Children’s Programs – Many volunteers provided much needed childcare while moms looked for jobs, attended appointments, or needed a break. Men, women and teens mentored the children, and helped with groups or provided special fun activities for a total of 2475 hours. Special Events - A total of 2116 hours were spent organizing and volunteering the day of special events, and representing the shelter at booths or public functions. If you would be interested in making a difference in the life of a women or child by volunteering, please contact Amy at 718-0735 ext. 304. 1168 hours were devoted to our women’s program. P ag e 9 F A C I LT Y U P D A TE This is more than a building. It’s a starting point. The Facility Healthy, long-term change – the kind that can be passed down from generation to generation – has to begin somewhere. For the women and children we serve, that change starts here, in our safe and secure facility. From the moment they walk through our doors, women and their children can sense the safety and security of this place. And that is no accident. We have worked diligently to implement a state of the art security system that protects everyone who calls Sheltering Wings home. This would not have been possible without generous P ag e 1 0 donations from civic groups and foundations. The lack of available space at Sheltering Wings is a testament to the need in our community. In 2007, our continued growth required us to move our outreach team off-site. This allowed us to open additional intake rooms, therapy space, and a room specially designed for teens. More space is still needed to more effectively serve our ladies and children. Moving forward, we will focus on expanding our facilities to ensure that every woman who comes to us can receive the help she needs. More space is still needed to more effectively serve our ladies and children. P ag e 1 1 F U N D R A I S I N G U P D A TE | F I N A N C I A L S Addressing today’s needs creates tomorrow’s hope. Fundraising In 2007, many generous donations were made to Sheltering Wings. We appreciate every gift and we take the necessary steps to ensure that we honor God through the proper management of the donations made to us. We know that when these gifts are utilized wisely, they can change our community forever. Ways to Give As you consider ways you can help Sheltering Wings, you may want to explore one of the planned giving strategies described below. Many of these options offer substantial tax benefits.Your attorney, accountant, financial planner or banker can explain how these benefits may work for you. Employer Matching – Many companies match donations made by their employees, which can double or triple the impact of your generosity. Ask your human resources department for information about your employer’s program. Stock Gifts – If you own shares of stock that you no longer need, donating them to P ag e 1 2 Sheltering Wings many allow you to take a substantial tax deduction. Bequests – As you prepare your will, please consider designating a set amount or percentage as a bequest to Sheltering Wings. If you already have a will, ask your attorney to add a codicil that reflects your wishes. Life Estate Arrangements – With this type of giving, you can donate your home, land or other property to Sheltering Wings, but continue to use that property for life. Insurance Gifts – If your dependents are financially secure, you may not need all of your life insurance coverage. Designating Sheltering Wings as a beneficiary for part or all of your benefits – or taking out a new policy listing us as beneficiary – may offer tax advantages. Annuities – Purchasing a charitable gift annuity or a lifetime annuity allows you to make a gift now, and receive an income as long as you and your beneficiaries live. Charitable Remainder Trusts – These trusts allow Sheltering Wings to benefit from your gift for a specified period with the assets then returning to you or your beneficiaries. But to those who have given diapers, stamps, paper, food, water, gas cards, grocery gift cards, movie tickets, Colts tickets, and so much more – we offer our thanks. Those who have volunteered to serve as drivers also deserve special recognition. Without their help, shopping, getting to GED classes, and countless other tasks would be impossible for our residents. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to those who helped at a “ladies day out,” sponsored a child at camp, donated trash pickup service, provided child care, painted a room, weeded the yard, washed a window, or cleaned the shelter van. For all you have done, we are grateful and thankful. All of these generous in-kind donations free up much needed dollars and staffing to provide the residents with the services they need. P.O.
