51613A:FINE PAINTS.qxd 3/3/09 3:03 PM Page 1 Brushstrokes A Few Words About Humanity ... M ost of us share the belief that this world would be a far better place if every family had a safe, decent and affordable home in which to live. We all share some things in common - moments of glory, moments of failure and an unavoidable common end. Not a day goes by that I do not give thanks for all with which I have been blessed, beginning with family, friends and good health. Our business has required much hard work and sacrifice, but I always remember to pay homage to the luck involved, as well. If this had been different, or that had not happened just then, Fine Paints of Europe would perhaps not have enjoyed the remarkable and continued success of the last two decades. Apparently, Fine Paints' clients have discovered that investing in high-performance paints makes sense in good times and bad times. We're especially grateful that our business remains viable during the current economic storm and we want to give back. Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built over 300,000 houses, providing clean, secure residences for over 1.5 million children and adults in more than 3,000 communities around the globe. We're proud of the fact that Fine Paints of Europe has played a small but continuing part in some of those success stories. Through the years, Fine Paints of Europe has donated thousands of gallons of beautiful, first quality coatings to schools, museums, churches, historic lighthouses, AIDS clinics - and to Habitat for Humanity projects across the United States. Here's how Habitat works. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, unpretentious homes with the participation of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. Homeowners pay principal and no interest. The monthly mortgage payments are used to fund still more Habitat homes. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor - sweat equity - into building their Habitat home and the homes of others. Founded by Millard Fuller and his wife in Americus, Georgia, Habitat has grown to a truly international organization, active in some ninety countries. The cost of homes varies from as little as $800 in developing countries to an average of nearly $60,000 in the United States. Habitat homes are affordable for low-income families because there is no profit included in the sale price and labor expense is minimal. Mortgage length varies from seven to thirty years. Interestingly enough, as a result of the current recession in the housing industry, Habitat for Humanity has become the nation's fourteenth largest home builder. Habitat has constructed or rehabbed almost 5,500 homes in its most recent year - a remarkable performance in such a difficult market. It is especially 51613A:FINE PAINTS.qxd 3/3/09 3:03 PM Page 2 notable that the foreclosure rate on Habitat homes is less than one percent - dramatically lower than the current national average of four percent. OUR ADOPTED LIGHTHOUSES Esopus Meadows Lighthouse The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse which stands in the Hudson River near Kingston, New York was built in 1871 and is one of the last remaining functional woodframe lighthouses in the U.S. This precious maritime treasure which once served as home for a lighthouse keeper and his family has been saved by the efforts of a group of dedicated volunteers whose goal is to open the lighthouse to tourists. Fine Paints of Europe has enthusiastically supported the restoration of the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse since 2001 with donations of Dutch primers and paints. For more information visit www.esopusmeadowslighthouse.org. Living room of recently completed Martha’s Vineyard home with Eurolux wallpaint. Habitat's goal is not only to provide homes at affordable prices, but also to build structures that are energy efficient and offer low maintenance costs. Our long-lasting finishes help to realize that goal, and for more than fifteen years Fine Paints has supported Habitat projects. We've recently made a commitment to the Martha's Vineyard chapter of Habitat to provide all interior and exterior coatings for two new homes a year for the next five years. (As a side note, The Charlotte Inn on Martha's Vineyard, which is also painted with Fine Paints, was rated the premier small hotel in the world by Travel & Leisure Magazine. There's a certain balance and beauty in the fact that our coatings grace both ends of the spectrum on this quaint little island off the coast of Massachussetts.) We're very proud of our affiliation with Habitat for Humanity, and look forward to continuing to work with them in the future. To learn more about how you can get involved, please visit the Habitat for Humanity website at www.habitat.org. Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse In 2007 Fine Paints of Europe adopted our second lighthouse – the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse – a Chesapeake Bay icon. This property relies heavily on labor donated by volunteers and on products donated by preservation oriented companies. Fine Paints of Europe coatings are being used on all interior and exterior surfaces of this property, one of only ten lighthouses in the U.S. to be designated a National Historic Landmark. To learn more about this unique lighthouse, its history and to arrange a tour please visit www.thomaspointlighthouse.org. Cordially. John Lahey P.S.-We note with sadness the passing of Millard Fuller (1935-2009), co-founder of Habitat for Humanity, during the preparation of this newsletter. Mr. Fuller served as Habitat's inspired leader for twenty-nine years. 2 51613A:FINE PAINTS.qxd 3/3/09 3:03 PM Page 3 Paint It Black ... The onset of World War I saw many of those iron rails torn out and melted down for the war effort. By the time they were replaced, although the public mourning period for Albert was long over, the only color that seemed to be right was black. To this very day, some ninety percent of doors and railings in England are painted black - an odd, though unintentional homage to the beloved Prince. ... or red, or green, or ... T here's a curious piece of history behind the preponderance of black exterior doors on English homes. No matter what your political allegiances, or how you feel about the Brits, you know that the entranceway to your home creates the first impression. Fine Paints or our retailers will supply you with everything required to properly prepare and paint your doors, inside and out, so that all guests will be greeted with the classic elegance, sheen, and unparalleled depth of color that only a high-quality enamel paint from the Netherlands can produce (brilliant or satin). You'll receive everything you need - paint, primer, brush, thinner, sandpaper - along with our professional guidance, guaranteeing you a doorway that is sure to make a lasting impression on all who pass through for many years to come for the special "kit" price of $100. In the mid-nineteenth century, life in jolly old England was downright Dickensian - the wealthy were still wealthy, and the have-nots still had nothing. And the doors and iron rails around houses were painted many colors, from red to blue, to green, and occasionally, black. But then, in 1862, Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert died and the British Empire descended into an extended period of mourning. Loyal subjects throughout the Empire, in a demonstration of despair and respect, painted their front doors, their iron railings, window frames and barge boards black. The citizens of nations opposed to the Crown - the Irish, the Scots and the Dutch - reacted by painting their doors bright colors as a bold indication of their feelings for Britannia. The Dutch Door Kit is available from your local Fine Paints retailer, on our website www.finepaintsofeurope.com, or by calling us directly at 800-332-1556. Queen Victoria herself was inconsolable, and remained in mourning for the next thirty-nine years until her death in 1901. In fact, from the day of Albert's death forward, the Queen wore nothing but black. 2 3 51613A:FINE PAINTS.qxd 3/3/09 3:03 PM Page 4 What's in a name? Dormer and roof detail of 1799 brick Federal in Woodstock, Vermont before restoration. Door provided access to former fire escape which has been permanently removed. Original siding and trim were local white cedar that had been installed in the 1950's without back priming and without benefit of air spacer between siding and sheathing. Q uite a lot if your name happens to be ECO. This important range of fine coatings offers an exciting new direction in "green" paint technology. We believe ECO represents the future in the world of beautiful, high performance enamels, suitable for interior and exterior use. In order to fully understand ECO's unique place in the world of paint, a bit of background is in order. Basically, three components make up a can of paint the pigment, the binder and the vehicle. Vehicle: Latex and acrylic formulations employ harmless water as their vehicle, making clean-up with soap and water a reality and, contributing to the formulation of environmentally kind coatings. On the other hand, alkyd (oil) based paints typically employ solvents as the vehicle - this creates the potential for environmental damage resulting from the release of volatile organic compounds. In the opinion of those who love high-performance oil paints such as Hollandlac, the extended life of these coatings compensates for their drawbacks. Indeed, on an annualized basis the V.O.C. release from well made solventborne coatings such as Hollandlac is frequently no greater than that resulting from the use of waterbornes which require three to four times the energy input to produce. Pigment: Although the quality and quantity of pigment varies greatly from one paint to another, basically pigments are the inert solids which combine with the binder to form the final paint film and give it color. Pigments used in waterborne and solventborne paints are identical. Pigments used by Fine Paints of Europe meet the highest standards of quality and are typically milled much longer than the pigments used in conventional coatings. The extremely fine grind of Fine Paints’ pigments is one of the reasons for the superior depth of color, coverage, and durability of our paints. Binder: The quality of the binder more than any other single factor is what distinguishes Fine Paints from ordinary coatings. Latex and acrylic binders disperse readily in water and have been used since the early 1950's for interior and exterior coatings. Traditional oil or alkyd binders are generally regarded as far superior to latex and acrylics in areas of adhesion, leveling ability and the ability to deliver a true enamel touch and feel in both satin and brilliant finishes. The environmental downside associated with the beloved traditional oil paints has resulted from the fact that solvents are normally used as the vehicle. New western red cedar siding is sanded on face side with 150 grit to remove mil-glaze and optimize primer adhesion. 4 2 51613A:FINE PAINTS.qxd 3/3/09 3:03 PM Page 5 Siding receives one coat of Fine Paints of Europe Oil Primer on all six sides and is encapsulated with one coat of ECO Satin before installation. Carpenters are provided 1 inch brushes and Oil Primer in order that all end cuts can be heavily primed before nailing in place with stainless steel nails. Siding and trim work are finish coated with ECO after installation. Nails are sunk and holes filled with Swedish Putty before final ECO coat. Photos of completed “frame off” restoration with new roof, insulation, sheathing, venting, siding and windows. All exterior surfaces received a minimum of one coat Fine Paints of Europe Oil Primer and two coats ECO Satin. Identical ECO system was used on the interior woodwork. Two coats of Oil Primer were used only when absorption was encountered. Enter ECO - an advanced, durable, waterborne alkyd offering the traditional characteristics of a solventborne alkyd in an environmentally friendly formulation. ECO offers ease of application, enhanced color retention and easy soap and water cleanup in an odorless coating while providing the enhanced adhesion, opacity and beautiful finish associated with traditional solventborne paints. ECO's revolutionary binder has repeatedly revealed its tenacity and extreme durability in the field - and it is doing all this in an earth-friendly low V.O.C. formulation. ECO primer and ECO paint have been subjected to accelerated weathering tests at DL Labs, a government certified testing facility. Based on lab results and use in the field for the last five years we feel confident in advising clients that an ECO system applied to a properly prepared substrate such as siding, exterior trim and windows can reasonably be expected to yield twelve to fifteen years service and is renewable with a single dress coat of ECO. To view DL Labs’ results please visit ECO and ECO primer sections of www.finepaintsofeurope.com Easily applied by homeowner or professional, ECO is specifically formulated for any interior or exterior wooden surface (cabinets, doors, windows, new siding). It glides on effortlessly, self-levels, spreads evenly and quickly, and may also be sprayed. Brushes and rollers are readily cleaned with warm, soapy water. ECO finishes are scrubbable making it especially practical for use in kitchens, bathrooms, children's rooms - or any wooden element in your home. Its quick-drying time means that a coat of ECO primer and a first finish coat of ECO Satin or Brilliant can easily be applied in just one day. Fine Paints of Europe is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. All Eurolux paints and primers and all ECO paints and primers meet requirements for compliance with LEED EQ credit 4.2: Low-emitting materials. The intent of this credit is to reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants. For information on U.S. Green Building Council, please visit www.usgbc.org. ECO is truly a coating that we can all feel good about. It's good for your home and it's better for our earth. The coating he chooses to paint his work is Hollandlac Brilliant from Fine Paints of Europe, applied over Fine Paints’ ferrous metal primer. many of my works are site-specific their form does not directly rely on the surrounding architecture or landscape. The clearly defined positive and negative space of the work, combined with its scale, creates a new framework in which the surroundings can be experienced through the sculpture ... I choose to work with steel and approach the material first as an artist and second as a craftsman. The success of my work does not rely upon gimmicks or trickery in the materials, but on the implied movement and strength of form of each individual piece. The bright, primary colors used to paint the work serves to bring the form of the work to the forefront, enhancing the sense of the work leaping from the ground as well as protecting the material from corrosion." A Brooklyn, New York based sculptor who was born in Philadelphia, John Clement studied at the School of Visual Arts and then began working professionally under the tutelage of internationally recognized sculptors such as Mark di Suvero and John Henry. Clement’s work has been exhibited in public art installations - as well as in solo and group exhibitions - across the country. "My sculptures are three-dimensional realizations of imaginary forms," says Clement. "I rely heavily on the artistic process, allowing the work to evolve and mature, eventually become self-referential. Although We couldn't agree more. Every government lorry, every RAF Spitfire fighter, every Churchill tank and every uniform from every service that you will see in England, is created to match standards which have served as one of the foundations of the former empire. Of course, every paint company supplying coatings in the U.K. is conversant with the British Standard Colors. Please Sign up for our E-letter! We now offer our newsletter online, using less paper and helping Mother Earth in the process. Please visit our website (www.finepaintsofeurope.com) and sign on for electronic delivery. Of course, you can rest assured that your email address, like your mailing address, is secure and unavailable to third parties. Fine Paints of Europe is pleased to be the first North American company to offer this venerable palette of color standards to America. Now, British Standard Colors such as Ironstone, Dark Admiralty Grey and Victorian Plum will be able to grace the palette of homeowners in the former American colonies. So go ahead, mate. Paint your room Grayfire. And consider using Hollybush for your trim. The British Standard color deck, including 470 official colors is offered for $50, including a $25 credit coupon redeemable through your local retailer or directly from Fine Paints of Europe. 10 51613A:FINE PAINTS.qxd 3/3/09 3:04 PM Page 11 A Matter of Taste " s my mother always said," quips Mark Chamberlain, "there's just no accounting for taste." Well, she certainly brought up a son who, when it comes to color, has an exquisite sense of both style and taste. As anyone can see by looking at his work, Mark is so much more than a just a "housepainter." A Sure, we often tout Fine Paints of Europe's rich range and depth of color and its superior durability, but having those words come from someone as talented and demanding as Mark Chamberlain makes it all the more weighty and gratifying. Thank you Mark, and keep up the inspired work. As resident Color Therapist for Apartment Therapy (www.apartmenttherapy.com), Mark Chamberlain is an artist whose passion is decorative painting and murals, but one who also paints interior walls with elan. His taste in color often steers him to strong, dramatic interiors and so it follows that the clients who lean on him for their decorative decisions are usually those who are thought of as more "fashion forward." Mark Chamberlain's Color Therapy is posted Tuesdays at www.apartmenttherapy.com, and he can be reached by email at [email protected]. See more of his work on his website, www.markchamberlainpainting.com. Mark Chamberlain is based in New York City but, as he says, "Have brush will travel." Because Fine Paints of Europe's coatings are known for both their beauty and durability, they make a perfect medium for Mark's exceptional work. As he so aptly says of our paints, " Once again, these Fine Paints of Europe are wonderful to work with and come in some of the richest colors imaginable. Look how delicious that wall is against the white sofa! This red feels paprika, burgundy, brown and ruby all at the same time ... the result truly does shimmer and change and one can begin to see how highlights and shadows suggest different hues. The texture of the paint is almost teflon-like when dry. The covering power of Eurolux matte yields incredible color depth with just two coats - even in the darkest colors." 11 51613A:FINE PAINTS.qxd 3/3/09 3:04 PM Page 12 PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID WHITE RIVER JCT., VT PERMIT NO. 86 PO Box 419 Route 4 West Woodstock, VT 05091 Phone: 800.332.1556 Fax: 802.457.3984 E-Mail: [email protected] “There is nothing more expensive than cheap paint.” 800.332.1556 www.finepaintsofeurope.com
