The Shooting Committee invites you to break bread and clays with fellow shooters of all levels at the Shooting Ground. Continental breakfast: 10:00 a.m. Lesson and One round of Shooting or Two rounds of Shooting Lunch: 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. This event is open to first time shooters, beginning shooters and weathered sportsmen. Retreat to the shooting lodge to talk targets and techniques with friends over lunch. If you haven’t been to the shooting ground recently - this event provides a great introduction to sporting clays at Longue Vue. Your Shooting Committee has been active in renovating the lodge, replacing machinery in the trap houses and revitalizing the sport. The views from the Shooting Ground are spectacular, why not point your sights toward this event and join in the fun! Page 2 THE VUE FROM THE GREENS There is a lot going on with the many fall projects on the golf course. The staff and I have been working diligently with long hours to take advantage of the recent weather during the end of the month. But here is a quick update of all that went down in October: Fall Cultural Practices: During the month, we completed aerification on tees and approaches by pulling an 5/8 inch core at 3 inches. In addition to core aeration, we verticutted and groomed each playing surface muiltiple times throughout the month. Fairways were sliced during the first week of the month, with an additional time scheduled for the first week in November. Towards the latter part of October, we were able to aerify all the target greens on the driving range in addition to restoring the Driving Range tees by aerifying, topdressing and overseeding before the Winter. This process will be repeated next Spring before the season starts. #5 Green Restoration: The wet weather during the middle part of the month, especially east of here has put Aspen, the firm handling the restoration, about a week behind schedule. However, the good news is that as I type this article, the process of stripping the existing putting surface has begun. The overall scope of the project is expected to take 57 days depending on weather. As a result of the delay, the logistics of XGD being installed into the green this fall is not going to work due to scheduling conflicts. The good news is that plenty of material has been developed for Aspen to use in the restoration project to help with cost and incorporate our native mix into the surface that will resemble the other greens on the course. This project is going to send a major shock to the green and now we are affording the opportunity for the surface to settle, overwinter and heal prior to having the traffic associated with the drainage installation compromising the restoration project. XGD will be in the Pittsburgh region during both the Spring and Fall time period for us to reschedule. Another positive is that it will allow me to monitor the drainage of the newly contoured putting surface over the next couple of months to ensure proper XGD installation once the time comes. XGD Progress: XGD has passed the halfway point with hole numbers 8,10,11,15,17 and 18 being completed. Numbers 6 and 7 should be finished during the first week of November. #3 Black/Blue Tee: The in-house construction project on the back tee of #3 was a huge success and the staff began sodding the finished product on the last day of the month. Here are a couple of bullet points of what was accomplished: The project allowed us to double the width of the old tee surface We were able to gain distance on both sides of the tee, Yardages now range from 180 to a front pin location when using front portion of tee to 230 to a back pin location from the back portion of the tee A huge benefit was that we were able to address the angle of the tee as well, the old tee was positioned off the existing terrain that created an angle to the center of the approach. With manipulating the hillside to the right of the tee, I was able to alter the angle of the tee towards the front middle of the green. (My apologies to Derek for his recent newletter article on how to pick your target line using #3 as a reference) #5 Forward Tee: During the last week of the month, I began setting the foundation for the new forward tee on #5 using the Page 3 THE VUE FROM THE GREENS (CONT.) material that was developed from the project on #3. I expect this project to be completed by the middle of the month, as a lot of time is associated with forming the new contours and compacting on an existing severe slope. The new tee should shorten the fifth by roughly 15-20 yards for the forward tee players. October was an exciting and productive month as we put a stamp on the 2014 season. Outside of the before mentioned projects, we were able to conduct key agronomic practices before going into winter while blowing a few leaves along the way. Please check out the blog (http://longuevuegreens.blogspot.com/) or follow us on Twitter (@lvcgreens) for progress on the projects and all the other happenings on the course. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation as we continue to make Longue Vue the best that it can be! Fairways and Dreams, Josh Saunders and the Greens Staff GOLF TIPS FROM THE PROS BY DEREK DEJIDAS , PGA Off-Season Putting Drills (Part 1) As the fall breeze gets colder, autumn will soon give way to winter, and another year of golf in western Pa will come to a close. Over the next few months, I’ll be giving you several drills that you can do during this down time in your home or office that will help you to improve your game by the start of spring. Many of these drills will be centralized around putting and the short game, due to the fact that unless you have high ceilings, it is much easier to swing a shorter club indoors! Lets start with putting. The direction the golf ball rolls off the putter is 80% affected by the angle of the face at impact and only 20% affected by the path of the putter. I often see golfers spend an extraordinary amount of time and effort reading the green, attempting to pick the perfect line, only to roll their ball over a completely different spot than where they were looking. In order to roll the ball in the direction in which you intend, or if you tend to struggle with short putts, try this drill: Find the corner of a piece of wooden furniture, a doorframe, or really any firm surface at a right angle. Set up, as you would while addressing the ball, with the putter flat against your prop (See image below). Make your putting stroke. You should hear one knock as the putter contacts the furniture. This will happen because the entire face of the putter contacted the wood at the same time, meaning that the face angle was square to your intended target line. If you hear more than one distinct knock, then either the heel or toe of the putter contacted the wood before the rest of the face, meaning that the face was either open or closed and your ball would have rolled either right or left of your intended line. It is important to note that the shaft of the putter should be leaning towards the target, as in the photo at right. For more golf instruction tips, please visit derekdejidas.com.
