A solid start at Oakmont Country Club on Friday during the first singles session left our team just 2 1/2 points off the lead. Then Longue Vue Club won the last three sessions of scotch, better ball, and the second singles session at Fox Chapel, Pittsburgh Field Club, and here at Longue Vue, to pull away to a 16 1/2 point victory. This is only the fourth time Longue Vue has won, the last victory was in 1995. Congratulations to all of our players for their outstanding play which resulted in this exciting victory! . A solid start at Oakmont Country Page 2 THE VUE FROM THE GREENS Mother Nature finally cooperated during the month of August with great stretches of temperatures and well-timed rains. In return, the golf course was in great shape and the playing conditions were conducive for great golf! With that being said, rounds were up and it is important to remind everyone to make the effort to repair ball marks on greens and replace divots in the fairways. We had the privilege of prepping the course for the final day of the Diebold matches during the first of the month to provide championship conditions. Congratulations to the Longue Vue team for bringing home the cup and protecting their home turf! One of the well-timed rains didn’t slow down Mrs. Crimmins from claiming the Ladies Club Championship, congrats to her and the other winners from the two day event. Outside of regular course maintenance, we embarked on a seeding project in the rough during the middle of the month that yielded great results. Following the Jim Henry, the plan is to embark on more areas for establishment of turf type Tall Fescue prior to the frost season settling in. This will be an on-going process for years to come during the months of August and September and we apologize in advance for any inconvenience. The goal is to continue incorporating the cultivar of turf type Tall Fescue into our high traffic, disease prone, lack of irrigation and Poa ridden areas throughout the golf course to provide improved playing surfaces and healthier turf for the seasons to come. September is shaping up to be a perfect month on the course and I’m excited at the health of the golf course going into the fall. I wanted to remind everyone that aerification will be conducted on the greens during September 24-26. Until then, I look forward to seeing you on the course. PACE OF PLAY PACE OF PLAY---There have been a number of instances of slow play at Longue Vue; defined as 18-Hole rounds taking well over 4 hours. This is a widespread issue that the USGA has targeted and that detracts from the golf experience for everyone. The Golf Committee is compelled to address this by sending letters to those involved. Complaints regarding pace of play come to various members of the golf shop staff and to members of the Golf Committee. Those complaints and any letters sent will be confidential. A positive response to this situation will benefit everyone at Longue Vue. Page 3 MELISSA RIMMIN IS LADIES’ CLUB CHAMPION Congratulations to Melissa Crimmins, the 2013 Longue Vue Club Champion! PADDLE SEASON WILL SOON BE HERE PLATFORM TENNIS, better known as “PADDLE”, will soon be here for the season! Relish exercise in the fresh air - learn and play “PADDLE”. This is the great cold weather sport at Longue Vue, come join us and you will not notice the gray skies of winter!! Platform tennis is easy to learn and play. People of all ages and skill levels come together to enjoy this game. It is an equally well suited as a family activity, a social activity for a group of friends, or as a competitive team sport. Longue Vue boasts five men’s teams and four women’s teams that participate in the Western Pennsylvania Platform Tennis Association. The game is played as a doubles sport with two players on each side of the net. The court (½ the size of a tennis court) has a heated floor to melt the snow and ice and is surrounded by heavily gauged wire fencing (screens). The ball can hit the court AND the screen before you return it, making it easier for the player to return a ball. Come and learn as a family or with a group of friends or brush up your existing skills. For more information about the sport, private or semiprivate paddle lessons, or if you are interested in joining a team, you may contact the paddle hut at 412-793-2232 ext. 280 or Tom Mercer directly at 412-334-5440 or ([email protected]) Page 6 LONGUE VUE EXPANDS LEGACY PROGRAM It bears repeating, our membership is second to none. This is true of their family as well. Longue Vue has always had a Legacy Membership Program in place, but now it is even more family friendly. Grandchildren, children, parents, siblings, nieces and nephews of current members in good standing are entitled to join the club under the Longue Vue Legacy Program. Legacy members will be locked in at 50% of the full initiation in effect at the time they join. Those joining under the age of 40 are permitted to participate in the Intermediate Programs with initiation fees and annual credits applied to their Legacy initiation until satisfied. Those participating in the Intermediate and Advanced Intermediate Programs would not be responsible for the balance of their initiation should their membership terminate for any reason.
